John would hate you watching this and Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head. He had the wrong manager who insisted he be called Johnny. Because of these two songs no one in America or Australia would sign John after he went with Glenn. It wasn’t cool to like him then but parents still got him to number one on both. He is baby John and he was 18 when Sadie went to number one. Thank God for Glenn and letting John be who he really was. Then it was so cool to love him. Thank you and now pretend you didn’t see it. He will be 73 in about 7 weeks and he still refuses to sing this at any concert, I have heard him do it once but he changed it up a lot. He always had that natural voice with no lessons.

Wasn’t he just the cutest thing back in the day? He’s been with us for decades. This was an early TV appearance on the Brian Henderson show (which also hosted very young Bee Gees). Yes, Sadie is ditzy and a running joke with John at his concerts, but it “made” John and was the beginning of 60 years of singing his heart out to us all.

So glad you actually watched those songs. Not bad for a plumber was he? All through his career, getting him to perform 'Sadie' has been like a running joke that's played on, by both him and his audiences. Always fun.

Your reaction is a classic at this time John had a manager that had him type cast for the Sadie type song. “In my room” was an original written by John at the time but his manager kept him singing the teen bop songs and his own music couldn’t get to the surface

John’s baby face looks young than his age there, he looks about 15 there lol. Yes and he didn’t have too many moves or jokes way back then - boy did he grow more , musically, comedic chat, moving around the stage and owned it. He came a long way from Sadie. He said once in an interview he didn’t hate Sadie, as he wouldn’t be where he got to without her. Nice sentiments 😊

Fair to say John (Johnny, when he was younger) hadn't found his forte yet with this very first hit. He was so young and fresh faced. We love Sadie for sentimental reasons. We loved this at the time and still. It's our music history. All music acts were miming on TV shows then. and the go go dancers were great.

Rollen mate , you definitely missed your calling , you would have made a great back up dancer . Thanks for playing this view into my past , I saw the effect John had on the girls with his boyish good looks and tailored way of dressing and the mod haircut at this time , so obviously like a lot of other young lotharios tried to emulate his style with mixed results, I did capture the attention of a beautiful young lady as a result of THE LOOK and managed to my amazement to make her my wife of 41 yrs till her untimely passing , she always said jokingly , I hope , that she couldn't have John so she settled for second best , regardless John Farnham has been a great influence on my life and his music gave both my wife and myself and our kids for that matter a huge amount of pleasure . Please keep reacting to Farnsey and all the other great Aussie singers that the world of social media is just discovering .

I love watching this because it is so cute and innocent. His first foray onto TV and in Australia we didn't have TVs until 1959 so keeping that in mind when thinking a short 8 years later he was up there being touted as the new King of Pop!! Watch how he doesn't know what to do with himself in gaps in the singing between verses and when he does move around it is so uncomfortable looking. But boy didn't he go far. He was about 18 here - born in 1949.

At the time John performed this, the dancer on John's left (The one who kicks over the bucket) was pregnant. Years later John performs a duet with the baby the lady ends up giving birth to. The song they perform is "Please don't ask me" and the young ladies name is Danielle Gaha. A link to the performance below and at the end he talks about the fact he sang and performed with her Mum while she was pregnant kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3-9aWWwaZhohM0

I think John is about 16/17yrs old here. And, yes, I also think they didnt sing live in these shows. It was something to do with the shows and their sound arrangements....or some weird thing like that. If you watch the movie....Bohemian Rapsohdy, you will see a scene where the band went on a tv show, Top of the Pops, I think, and they were annoyed that they had to lip synch instead of singing live. All these music shows never let the performers sing live....it was easier for them to control the sound. Weird, I know...but it was normal for these tv shows. Sidenote: the reason that the one 'cleaning lady' isn't dancing very much, is that she was pregnant. And....years and years later....her baby daughter would grow up to become one of Johns backing singers in the 90s..! Danielle, something or other.....John explains it in one of his live concerts. 3 degrees of seperation type of thing.....

Well Johnny Farnham was marketing as clean cut crossover pop / novelty pop singer in the late 60s early 70s that daughters and mothers could like . Sadie The Cleaning Lady was Johnny first single it was Johnny’s first number 1 also Sadie ended up being the most successful Australian single of the 60’s within Australia . The second song In My Room a Johnny Farnham original he was trying to establish himself as a songwriter back then in 1967 at 18 years of age , but the recording company EMI stop Johnny musical development by keeping him ultra busy and had Johnny sing whatever song they threw at him until he got married in 1973 . But was a few gems that Johnny was happy to record like . The following up single * Friday Kind Of Monday 1968 * One ( cover of Harry Neilson , Three Dog Night ) 1969 * Comic Conversation 1970 * Don’t You Know It’s Magic ( written for Johnny by Australian singer songwriter Brian Cadd for Tokyo Song Festival in 1973 and won ) * Everything Is Out Of Season 1973 Johnny Farnham’s singles sold much better than he’s albums back then . Johnny had 16 top 30 singles from 1967 to 1973 , with 2 number 1’s Sadie and Raindrop Keep Falling On My Head in 1970 an cover of the BJ Thomas song which Johnny’s version was released in Australia first due to recording company loophole . After Johnny got married in 1973 his teen pop Image was on the the decline and recording couldn’t promote Johnny as a single bachelor anymore . By 1975 Johnny and he’s first manager parted ways following being dump by recording company EMI . After 75 without a recording deal was doing television variety programs singing covers just for little income . Doing club shows ( yes where the microphone antics was born , to keep club patrons focused on him not elsewhere in the club . Johnny was doing gigs with the house band which was terrible , Johnny had to stop one gig and count the inexperience band in . Some gigs in those days Johnny was just singing to his family members was that it . Glenn Wheatley saw one those terrible gigs in the late 70’s and said to Johnny that he’s better than that and planted a seed of future management . By the 1980 he dropped the Johnny to John and had a established Farnham Band touring the pubs in Australia . John’s band then featured a young Tommy Emmanuel Australian guitar legend . The same year John recorded the Uncovered album produced by Little River Band founding member songwriter Graham Goble who was a fan of John’s Graham was writing songs that was to high for LRB’s original singer Glenn Shorrock , which lead to Shorrock being somewhat fired or pushed out of LRB and John hired in LRB After LRB in 1986 the rest history
