Madan Gopal Singh sends us his freshly recorded version of Ranjha Jogi Ban Aaya.
For the non Punjabi understanding music lovers, he has also translated this soulful verse in English. This scene is where Heer is separated from her lover Ranjha.
"Ranjha (the beloved divine) has come disguised as a Jogi (ascetic)
He has come afar, a dark curling tress and a face full of reflection
His body is as if bathed in moonlight.
He has set up the sacred bonfire and mesmerized me.
It is a nightly forest and the stars shimmer in the distance
Nightly forest it is where Ranjha sets up his little tent in transience
O Heer (the woman who is in love with Ranjha) imagine what good deeds he must have earned
Ranjha, the ascetic has stepped into the Black Garden (the Garden of Desire)
The moonlight peers through the foliage here and there
How his face is so luminous aglow in layers of darkness
How has this bit of light come about.
My beloved has come disguised as an ascetic."
In another such verse ( not in this rendition) Heer in her separation (apparently) meets God and disdainfully says - I met the divine (God) but HE is nowhere close to my Ranjha.
