Yup. I personally like playing control, but as a mostly f2p player (I've only bought the welcome back bundle), I just don't have the tools necessary to play it. Probably why I end up watching more HS than I play honestly. Which of course perpetuates the cycle of not having enough gold to get packs. I've managed here and there playing aggro, but usually have to run a ton of removal tools to pull it off. Like in hunter I find I need to run Hunters mark and damage spells like Grievous Bite/On The Hunt just to deal with big threats, but it loses steam since most of the big threats I do have, I only have one of if at all (I've only got one Highmane, and don't have King Krush or Swamp King Dread). Paladin is one of my favorite classes, but still don't have Tirion, Grimestreet Enforcer, Tarim, or Ragnaros Light Lord. All cards that are super clinch and impactful in a game. Not saying I can't win, but it sure makes it tougher and pretty much forces me to go full-aggro or an aggressive mid-range deck. tl;dr Game's tough if you ain't got the cash, or the time to invest (Like me with having a family and a full time + overtime job)

I always have a much harder time getting from rank 20 to 15 at the start of a new season than I do getting from rank 15 to 10. I don't know if this is some hidden elo system or something and I'm only queueing against other good players, but in my experience I only face tier 1 style decks up until rank 15 and then it calms down a little bit and I see more variety on the way to rank 10.

They should really just adjust how the ladder reset is handled, right? Like you can't fall below 15 if you ended the season above it and can't fall below 5 if you ended the season above it. Let inactive accounts fall back to 25 so they aren't overwhelmed upon returning to the game but other than that what is even the rationale behind the current system?

It is supposed to give players something to aim for, the rank of achieving "legend". If a player spends a month climbing from 20 to 3, but cant reach legend in the time left, next month he knows he has to work harder (AKA grind ladder more) to get something special (the legend card back). I'm not saying i agree with it, but when i first started playing, i got to like rank 3 and couldn't get any higher. When it reset, i had the challenge of the climb ahead of me, and i actually enjoyed seeing my rank go up. If i only reset back to 5 after the reset, climbing wouldn't be as much fun. Maybe once you hit legend you get put into an entirely new ladder system on the reset? Sort of like in LoL where you need to hit level 30 to play ranked, you could need to hit legend in order to play in legend mode? IDK.

If you don't have cards for meta decks, why would you do well in ranked? There's nothing wrong with playing casual. If you play ranked, you should expect people to be trying to win. Anything above rank 20 will be people who want to win games consistently, so they'll be playing good decks. People don't have the "right" to hit rank 15 if they don't have a good deck. Plus, you can make a good warlock, hunter, and maybe rogue deck with mostly commons and rares. Bonemare and Fire Fly are two of the most played cards, and they're commons.

Dlesar Have you ever played casual? It is filled with people trying out meta decks or greedy ones. This game is designed to not give a poor player a chance. Why do we see so much agro? Agro is cheap.

Yeah, I don't know. I've never once seen an issue and always scoffed at people whining about "the new player experience" but it does actually seem like I've been on the wrong side of this, at least recently. Certainly you don't have a right to climb ladder but the purpose of a ladder is to have people of different experience levels at different tiers. If the experience of playing at rank 19 is identical to playing at rank 5 then what's the point of even having a ladder? Maybe the solution should be even more extreme, just scrap the entire system and rework from the ground up. For example, instead of ranking up after a set number of wins maybe you need to hit a full win streak on a rank to get to the next ensuring that you have to be consistently capable of beating other people at your level to move on. Add in "loss streaks" and lose a rank from those. Lose five ranks at the start of each season to keep the grind slightly fresh. Or any number of other solutions, it just seems like the current model really may not be working after all.

I agree, seeing meta decks at ranks 20-16 is frustrating. Part of the problem is, hearthstone isn't super skill based. Even the best players in the world only get around a 60-70% winrate in a season. It's more of a grind, so rank 15 vs rank 5 is mostly just who's played more games. Skill really only becomes a barrier around rank 3 I think. The system should definitely be reworked. One idea I had was that your games won in the previous ranked season would affect who you got matched against. If you had 50+ wins, you'd get matched against other people who got 50+ wins. Same with 10-49 and 0-9 (or some similar scale). And this would only apply to ranks 20-6. Once you hit rank 5, it would be normal matchmaking. That way new players would get matched against other new players, or people who don't play a lot. Then 10-49 would be casual players, 50+ would be competitive players.

i stopped playing this game for a while last year and when i came back i even ran into highroll-y shit like that even at rank 22. hell, i even ran into exodia mage in low ranks a few times back during gvg (edit: BRM. forgot it required emperor ticks so couldn't have been gvg). back then they had to play echo of medivh and the deck was like tier 12 because the meta was a bunch of threat dense midrange decks with sticky naxx minions.

This is why laddering on EU is so annoying. You face Tier 1 decks right from the start. No room for testing fun decks. Savj was streaming a fun Quest Druid with Blood of the Ancient One. He was demolished so hard at Rank 8 that he had to stop the stream. Blizzard should allow at least some cheaper decks to be competitive. Even Midrange Hunter is too expensive now with 2 legendaries and 2 epics.

Nah you don't need any legendaries in midrange hunter. Patches and Rexxar aren't core cards in the deck, and patches especially is kind of questionable considering there's a golakka crawler or two in nearly every opponent's deck now. I don't use either of them in my hunter because Rexxar is just a dead card in so many matchups and patches is punished too easily and hunter doesn't have enough pirate synergy to make up for that.

there is very little difference in decks at ranks below 20. Enough people didn't play for the last two expansions that many are at low ranks or starting new accounts anyways. I've been playing a Tier 1 Kingsbane deck at rank 19 and its not going perfectly like youtubers say it is. Cancer Mage or aggro gets me most of the time... per usual for HS.
