1. Whoracle - Perfection. My first IF album and still my favorite. They will play this at my funeral 2. The Jester Race - Also perfect, love the flow. Would be #1 if not for Whoracle. 3. Colony - I also love the vibe of this album and a lot of the songs have a similar feel. Very ahead of its time. My favorite IF song “Ordinary Story” appears on this album. 4. Clayman - A bridge album but I still feel like IF ushered in a new era without sacrificing a lot of trademarks. 5. Reroute to a Remain - Some interesting cuts and high points are the integration of newer elements and more modern production. 6. Come Clarity - IF tried to satisfy the old fans and new fans and while some were not satisfied this a well balanced album. 7. Soundtrack to Your Escape - A different album at the time. I used to hate this album actually but I have definitely warmed up to a lot of the experimentation. Different still yes, but not unfocused. F(r)iend is also incredibly underrated. 8. Lunar Strain - I wish I could rank this higher but I definitely don’t think this album holds up to the rest of their early career. Some great cuts, and still a fantastic album, but ideas presented here were better adapted on later albums. 9. A Sense of Purpose - I enjoy some several cuts as much as any early IF song but some definite clunkers on here too. Still not as bad as some people make it out to be. 10. I, The Mask - The strongest IF have been in a decade I believe. Title track actually gave me goosebumps on first listen. Still some filler, but huge hopes for the future. 11. Battles - Some solid riffs, and a few good songs, but also a lack of identity in comparison. 12. Sounds of a Playground Fading - IF lost Jesper and stumbled a bit for identity I feel. 13. Siren Charms - IFs weakest album for me comes from a lack of identity and motivation between certain members (Daniel left during this cycle and Peter left in the middle of making Battles) Not bad, but certainly not memorable.

Nice to see a lot of people rating Soundtrack to Your Escape a bit higher, I thought it was really a delivery on what Reroute to Remain promised and it has some definite anthems on it that mix the best of the two "eras" of IF, if you will, plus good use of subtle dark electronic sound that started to get overdone and played on later works IMO. Colony and Clayman are probably my top two, completely sentimental picks haha.

You can say what you want about post 2000s In Flames, but their goal was to become big and commercially successful band, and they did it. Dark Tranquillity did much better, more consistent work in their evolution, but compared to IF, they are "underground".

The distillation was perfect around about "Come Clarity" but they took it too far. Early fans like me can't touch the stuff after Jesper Stromblad left. The sound has never been the same since.
@Bloink5 жыл бұрын
I demand citation for the claim that that was their goal with the sound and not quite frankly happenstance of creativity
@demonhalo675 жыл бұрын
The band have been clear that they are going to keep going down the current path whether the fans are on board or not. The music isn't as creative anymore and that's the point. The band would have been huge anyway had they stuck to the winning formula before. Up to them, the new stuff doesn't appeal to me.
@Bloink5 жыл бұрын
Was that question aimed at me? In that case I don't see how it answered what I asked for. To say a band plays a particular kind of music *to be* successful rather than a change in musical interest has to be demonstrated and not just assumed and asserted
I've been an In Flames fan for 20 plus years now... Seen them live 9 times...I'm a huge apologist and enjoy most of their material but the past several albums are hard for me to even get into. Pretty much been a huge downhill swing starting with Siren Charms. Seems like they're just phoning it in anymore which is sad because these guys always had a ton of heart.

If I had to pick five: 1 - Whoreacle: the album that brought me to them with their instrumental "Dialogue With The Stars" and eventually made me learn "The Hive" on guitar due to massively replaying it. 2 - Sense of Purpose: the album that I replayed mostly because it reminded me of some of my school sweethearts (because it sounded like metalcore which was mostly listened by emos, that those girls actually were) but also because it sharpened my guitar skills with songs like "Disconnected" and "Sleepless Again". 3 - The Jester Race: the album that I put as close to my other favorite bands like Hypocrisy and learnt most of the songs from to play on guitar, with favorites being the self-titled one, "Dead God In Me" and "Dead Eternity". 4 - Reroute To Remain: the album that sort of had a heavier sound than their previous five albums and had resemblance to bands like Arch Enemy and Soilwork which are some of my favorites as well. It also felt like a big experiment that fused Alternative and Groove metal with their signature Melodic style. 5 - Come Clarity: the album that a different sounding than their previous ones. It featured the sound of Sepultura and Lamb of God, which I dig a lot. Another experiment, but a great one. IF's whole discography hold a special place for me.

In Flames are the band that got me into extreme metal period. After a sense of purpose I felt really let down and I've not listened to the band very often since. I pin the decline in quality due to Jesper leaving the band and nothing has really got me back on board since. Thanks for your list. I'd honestly Colony above everything else with Jester Race a very close second, Whoracle third.

IMO- 1.Colony-Favorite album outright,dark, moody and frenetic feeling atmospheres that hit the sweet spot for me. 2.Jester Race-First album I heard,A masterpiece through and through. 3.Clayman-Amazing work,progressions and mood streamlined very well as this album shines greatly because of it. 4.Soundtrack-Love the jams on this album,back to a darker more rythmic vibe with dystopic overtones imo. 5.Whoracle-A classic pillar of IF discography,the melodic progression becoming more pronounced in this album, A big leap forward. 6.Come Clarity-Insanely catchy Album,an echo of STYE with even more depth and emotion to it. 7.Reroute-The changepoint for these guys in a huge way,alot of new character shown forth and great music as always. 8.Lunar Strain/Subterranean-Both Raw and immense,They are undeniably great,so much in its atmospheres, just waiting to become so much more. 9.A sense of purpose-A noticeably more detatched feel,felt like the guys were fatigued in this album for some reason. 10.Battles-Not exactly my fav,but I still jam it.Some good tracks on this album still. 11.Sounds of a playground-This one was at a loss of identity,,Farewell Jesper. 12.I,The Mask-Or is it The Mask,,I? hmmm,,Hopeful sound overall, it seems to be a really solid album actualy. 13.Siren Charms-Last place and it seems to belong here more so than the rest.I have nothing bad to say about this one,but was the weakest in terms of their work.

Top 3: Colony - For me, this is the no. 1 In Flames album. A good mix between experimental modern concepts and the classic Gothenburg melodeath sound. Whoracle - This is the epitome of the Gothenberg Melodeath sound, chockful of melody and intricate harmonies. The Jester Race - Once again, the melodic death metal sound is present, but is relatively more on the aggressive side.
I will never be able to decide my 1 favorite In Flames album, but it is one of these three: The Jester Race, Clayman and Colony. However their other albums from the 2000s have some amazing songs. I love Cloud Connected, The Quiet Place, Reflect the Storm, Alias... Honestly hard to pick a favorite when their releases are so different form each other.

*1. Jester Race:* _Dead Eternity, Lord Hypnos, and The Jester Race_ are absolutely beautiful songs. Has a great intro song and a fantastic outro song, 2 great bonus tracks; and the other masterful songs that solidify the "melo death sound with a folky touch" sound that IF nailed on this album. *2. Lunar Strain:* Mikael from _Dark Tranquility_ was the vocalist for this album and it shows. With a slight Boss HM-2 sound that a lot of Stockholm bands are know for, but still very prevalent Nordic folk influence that flows fluidly from each song, thanks to Strömblad's work. *3. Whoracle:* _Jotun,_ great intro song, then _The Hive, Food for the Gods, and Morphing Into Primal_ being the heavy hitters. Jester Race 2.0 with slightly more melody. *4. Subterranean:* Vocals are a little iffy on some songs, but the riffage from _Stand Ablaze_ all the way to _The Inborn Lifeless_ more than make up for it. *5. Colony:* Nothing more needs to be said when you listen to _Ordinary Story, Colony, and Zombie Inc._ Obviously not as heavy as previous albums, but the liberal use of harmony fills the void for a fantastic melodic sound. Great solos, great complexity, great instrumental bonus track. *6. Clayman:* Solid intro, and unfortunately, that's all I have to say. To this day and with countless listens, I've just accepted that I'll never understand why _Only for the Weak_ continues to be one of IF most popular songs, even on this album. Songs are nice when I listen to them, but forgettable shortly after. As for the other albums, when I want death metal, I'll go to old _In Flames, Entombed, Death, FleshCrawl, Hypocrisy, ATG_ etc. etc. When I want... Whatever the fuck the new shit is? Melocore? I'll listen to _AILD, Arsis, TTEOTD, Darkest Hour_ and the like, instead of *Battles* and *Come Clarity.*

Siren Charms is my worst too, just sounded very melancholy, which reduced the relisten value. I loved the new album, felt like the post Jesper albums were leading to that. I hope they get heavier again and maybe make an album with Broderick on board. My faves are definitely The Jester Race, Clayman and Reroute.

Whoracle is my favorite too, but talk about a band that shit the bed. Everything after Clayman is garbage and it's a shame because Clayman saw the band adjusting their sound but still having that sense of melody.

1. Colony 2. Sounds Of A Playground Fading 3. Come Clarity 4. The Jester Race A lot of the others change from time to time. Frankly I think Soapf isn't given enough credit for being a more progressively composed album, as well as arguably being their most explosive sounding album with it having the best production out of all their albums imo

Hahah true. I commented the same thing. That goes on to show his lack of understanding In Flames music.

I always found In Flames hit-and-miss, even with their old albums. They're just a band I'd rather see live than hear on record...
