Bournemouth was the most depressing city I’ve ever lived in. No cap, I moved there for a year and came back with depression 🤣🤣🤣 I think you might of ranked Sheffield too low, since the new building developments it’s looking good, and they have good public transport and the people are friendly. They also host this big film festival. So there is a lot of cultural activities happening and it has good transport links to other major cities. I think it’s a good place to live if you are a young adult who works and travels. I don’t know about night life there though. But it’s generally a good place, especially if you are a woman it feels very safe.

It would not be on your list but is a nice place to visit: The city of DERBY (next to Nottingham) in the East Midlands. It has a smallish city centre but a really nice location situated as it is on the River Derwent, which flows through the centre. It has a lot of history including being the place where Bonnie Prince Charlie was turned around during his invasion of England and the place of the first factory during the Industrial Revolution (The Derby Silk Mill), now the Museum of Making. It is a small industrial city but is also known for its many parks, having the molst of them per size in the country. It is also the first place in the Derwent Valley which in a part of the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE CENTRE - THE DERWENT VALLEY MILLS and has a nice museum (for its size), including an art gallery showcasing the paintings of respected RA member Joseph Wright (of Derby). The Parks are the best for me though: Markeaton Park, Darley Abbey Park, Allestree Park and Elvaston Castle untry Park (the first country park in the country) among others. There is also the stately home of Kedleston Hall. And perhaps best of all the city is within easy reach of the PEAK DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK and the DERBYSHIRE DALES where you will find treasures such as CHATSWORTH HOUSE, HARDWICK HALL (home of the 2nd richest woman in the country at the time) and HADDON HALL (a mediaeval manor).

A very interesting video After many many years without a proper holiday, for my wife’s 60th birthday, we had a short 4-day break to London late in 2022, travelling down by train from Newcastle. We had a brilliant time, so have had several more short city breaks since. These have included Edinburgh (twice), Glasgow, London again, Manchester & Liverpool, Leeds & York, with three more repeat trips already booked for 2024. Initially we visited single cities, but more recently we have been combining two cities in one trip which can work out quite well (2 x 2-days) I am now trying to think of somewhere new to visit, for late in the year, or even early 2025. The earlier you can book, the better deals can be had .. and it gives us something to look forward to. I’ve been thinking about Inverness, Aberdeen, Cardiff, Nottingham, Sheffield. Derby, Chester Although my wife likes the shops, we both enjoy seeing new places of interest, such as museums, cathedrals etc. Regards from Whitley Bay

Living near Portsmouth I think it’s a very fair ranking. All the clubs and good bars are centered around guildhall square where the architecture is also amazing. However beyond the city centre the suburbs aren’t that nice and most of the housing is just copy pasted after the war. The traffic is also terrible since it’s an island with only 3 road bridges off the island. However I do think Southampton has more to offer if you aren’t into clubbing

As a tourist, I would recommend avoiding driving into the Bristol city center on a late Friday afternoon. Getting around Bristol by car is hard enough at normal times, but when everyone is fleeing work to either home or to the pub, its crazy. You might even find yourself stuck in a "busses only" lane and get a ticket by mail some months later. Just saying. Take an Uber.

Really! the last time I was in Bristol, it was a breeze. But then I was on my cycle. I'd ridden the midland railway path from Bath right into Bristol center. Then I rode out to Whitchurch on the old North Somerset line. If you persist in driving into traffic hell holes, you get your just rewards.

You obviously have a preference for larger cities with good night-life, loads going on and maybe also on the warmer side - all of which is fine, and I do know what you mean about some of the smaller ones that have limited choices, especially after all the shops close down! I'm delighted to see your inclusion of St Andrews, Stirling and Dundee, though I suspect I'd have placed the latter a bit higher on the list, because while it does have some very rough and impoverished suburbs with poor standards of housing and other social problems - show me a city that doesn't... Again, Stirling is the smallest of Scotland's eight cities, and while it does feel a little bit on the suburban side after dark, it really does enjoy a beautiful setting and is also pretty upmarket, for the most part. I might also have placed Edinburgh and Bristol the other way around: I have lived in both and, while I imagine Bristol probably does have the edge on variety of things to do that appeal to younger people, I do feel much safer in Edinburgh, which the crime statistics also support. I'm also not especially impressed by either Bournemouth, Southampton (where I have also lived) or Brighton, though I do quite like Portsmouth, as it is much less pretentious and its people are less self-promoting, on the whole. Likewise, Oxford, Cambridge and Bath - and for the same reasons really. I don't dislike London, but it's not very disabled-friendly - on transport especially; and it is far, far too polluted and overcrowded - it should not be possible to wipe the sweat off your brow and discover the wiped piece of skin is a different colour from the rest, on the train home...! As for where's missing, I suspect I may have included Durham, Hull, Aberdeen, Inverness and perhaps Aberystwyth, as seaside towns are also permitted. Indeed, from a nightlife point of view, I even half-expected to see Blackpool, on your list!

Don't get that one, Sheffield is just a smaller Bristol, both very nightlife/alternative culture cities with strong Dance music/party cultures with a very strong focus on students and outdoors due to both being close to bouldering/hiking AONBs. Also both Bristol and Sheffield have terrible city centers, Broadmead in Bristol center center is honestly way more sketch than any part of Sheffield city center. In fact many Sheffielders I knew were people pushed out of Bristol due to gentrification and rapidly rising prices and they wanted a city that was pretty much just Bristol but cheap. Netheredge is nothing but Bristol expats lol. Bristol gentrification also has to be taken into account, it's as expensive as London in rents and prices, yet has Northern England/Wales wages.

as an english person, id like to take this moment to say that I think you're a little too worried about dundee, despite being very pro-independence, they are still pro commonwealth, I went up there for the platinum jubilee in 2022 and everyone on my street came out to celebrate with a lovely jubilee trifle and some drinks, The view from up the law is also incredibly pretty and there is often stuff to do there, it feels like a great hybrid of edinburgh's architechtural and natural beauty, with the location and naval history of portsmouth, it also holds the origin to the beano comics, dennis the menace and all that, and it still very much keeps that artistic culture

Yes well I actually think that’s a pretty good comparison to compare Dundee with a mix between Portsmouth and Edinburgh! Sheffields ranking is bizarre here with Bristol being number 1. Sheffield has the moniker "Bristol of the North" for a reason. Very vibrant music/nightlife city with a strong alternative and outdoors culture (Peak District) with most of the life happening in the suburbs as the city centre is rubbish and lets be real, Sheffields suburbs absolutely are some of the best in the UK in terms of beauty, lots of old stonework houses, pebblestone streets and nature/borderline temperate rainforest everywhere. Bristol is very much the same, awful city centre but very vibrant as soon as you leave it, while attracting a strong youth/alternative and outdoor scene due to its music scene and proximity to the Mendips.

Swindon is the largest settlement in Wiltshire with a population of almost 200.000. Swindon is definitely a city according to international criteria, which is the only criteria that counts. The very idea that it should be left to the British regent to decide what is a city is just ridiculous.

when he spoke of Swindon as being horrible I saw a video of a nice looking place which he then said was not of Swindon but of London - I gave up on this video at that point, after having watched an advert and fake news of Swindon. Not coming back

Neither Swindon certainly not Weston Super Mare nor Bournemouth is a city - please check your facts. Plymouth is much better than Exeter... go there again very busy - thriving the biggest footfall increase and major new work going on there - biggest street realm work in the country..
