I did a Ranni simp playthrough where my entire goal was to use the Dark Moon Greatsword. When I finally got it, I found it so brokenly powerful that I stopped using it after a few fights. Ended up using Helpen's Steeple because it wasn't an I win button. It's also a very stylish weapon.

I did the same with Mohgwyn's spear, after destroying Malenia first try with it and Mimic Tear having never fought her before, I figured it was high time I don't use it for the rest of the bosses that I had left.

I still used it i just rarely used heavy attacks, it would be so much better if instead of it adding the projectile to the heavy, using the skill button again would do the projectile, and you still get that damage bonus

Darkmoon GS being at the top spot feel very satisfying considering its legacy. If any weapon deserves to be at the top, it's the one that has been around since King's Field. Also I am a Clayman's Harpoon stan so I can confirm it definitely deserves its high placement

To defend the Helphen's Steeple a little bit (I still agree the Dark Moon Greatsword does outclass it because of the Moonlight Greatsword projectiles while buffed), Ruinous Ghostflame does add 110 Magic Damage which is nearly double the amount Moonlight Greatsword adds (65) and even though the Dark Moon Greatsword has native Frostbite, Moonlight Greatsword only adds 15 Frost making it a total of 70. Ruinous Ghostflame adds 80 Frostbite. Plus, Helphen's Steeple has way better Strength scaling than DMGS, making it a true Strength/Intelligence sword whereas DMGS is pure INT. Solid list, Youwy.

Words can't describe how insanely good Wings of astel is. Rosus axe is also really fun to use, the AoW is what tibia's summons wishes it was, poise-breaking machine. Rotten crystal sword should be higher imo, the rot buildup alone makes the weapon really good despite it's downsides. Meteoric ore blade is like A for me, insane high damage, bleed weapon, heavy attack DESTROYS poise and it just looks cool af.

The Moonveil deals significantly less damage with its weapon art than Unsheathe and the projectile part of the AoW sometimes completely whiffs if you're too close to the target. Unless you have plenty of fp and make good use of the added range of the projectile I'd just use an Uchi/ Nagakiba with Unsheathe. This doesn't mean that Transient Moonlight is weak, it's just that Unsheathe is complete bonkers

Moonveil is braindead cheap instead. Also the damage is pretty close of you have high Int and have it at +9 or 10. The upgrade level for that thing changes so, so much it's not even funny.

@@Blittsplitt5 Unsheathe has a higher motion value than the initial hit and projectile of Transient Moonlight combined, resulting in higher damage even at lower AR. I've tested this several times in the most recent version of the game with optimal stats. The poise damage of Transient Moonlight is only higher on the light attack (22.5+5 instead of 20)

It's true strength is in being able to deal 3 types of damage. It gives an enormouse versatility for PVE on the first game. It also is great for being a powerful weapone when out of FP, particularly that it does a stab.

I used the watchdog staff if I required magic or range attacks, the weapon itself is not magic and only does physical damage and scales in strength and dex, but it’s ash of war does a high scaling range magic tracking attack that scales with the weapon AR, so if you are running a strength build and never invested in INT you can still have a really hard hitting magic range attack with this

Little unmentioned note about the scepter of the all knowing: it’s the only hammer with strike/pierce. It has a unique back-step and I believe R1 finisher that does pierce damage. The war-pick looks like it should do pierce, but it’s listed as strike in-game.

Yeah, the Alabaster lord's sword's surprisingly decent. One thing I've noticed it that the defensive stats you get from stat points are favored in a way to go you to 20 in int and arcane as a softcap fro their respective defenses. Basically up to 20 points in either you get +2 to your static defenses against their respective damage types, magic and holy.Physical defenses don't get 2 per point until 40+ points of strength.

i'm on my 1st playthrough and i was gonna go DEX build but there is like no weapons here?? or am i blind? i was using the starting samurai weapon for 45 lvls and i had enough. started pumping INT and went straight for moonveil katana. it's a fun sword but i feel like i need to shift to INT build now? how does it work? the special moves scale off of INT only?

The darkmoon great sword is just so darned pretty. I'm still not great a fighting and this helps. Maybe I need to try the Wing of Astel again and getting better at fighting although I think the darkmoon will always end up back in my hand. One charge and you can do soooooo many attacks with its weaponskill.

Carian Knight's Sword has only one real purpose: as a low-level sorcerer, if you don't have the dex for the Moonveil, it gives you a decent melee option so you can save FP. Pretty quickly falls off, however, but you can get it fairly early game.

It's a monster as a sword, it's AOW is extreemly underrated due to it's speed. Use it as a sword then factor it's AOW. It is extreemly powerful as a sword for a designated mage or magic knight.

Just did an intelligence run. Used the Moonveil for the most part but switched to Wing of Astel when I got it and damn... That thing really is a weapon of mass destruction Now I do have to say that there are some shortcomings. The heavy attack projectile actually doesnt do the stance damage, you have to hit both the hit itself and the projectile but its still insane. Poisebreaking something like the Farum Azula beastmen in just two charged attacks is nuts. The other shortcoming is the actual normal attack damage of the sword is pretty lacking, but lets face it nobody will use them anyways. Just spam the skill and some charged attacks and the entire game crumbles before you I preferred the moonveil over the wing for Malenia though. Way more consistent

MLGS at 1. is just facts. My last playthrough after not playing any souls game in a year, I just instantly did rannis quest, get mlgs and rogiers armour and put all my points in Int and vigor (a minimum in dex/str) and just was obliterating any boss. This was my first time first trying malenia at lvl 100 or so and the only boss i needed a few tries were Mohg (bc too less hp). The fact u get the strongest weapon art (the charged projectile) in the game for free for a minute for 32 FP is just the key for this minimalistic build. No need in Investing in any other than int and vigor and thats exactly what being overpowered means. sry for bad english

Ok I know it’s gonna sound silly but I actually prefer having frost only on the buff for helphens steeple cause I can guarantee my timing to actually proc it. I don’t use it for a frost build but I just like it’s damage. I’m ok with it on bleed and with mohgs spear cause I don’t use exultation talismans (at that point why don’t you just use frost if your aren’t already?). And again like said plenty of times, I hate how much is required to use a very slightly more powerful version of the helphens steeple in the first place. They both have their uses imo. I really don’t expect anyone to agree but I’m trying to justify why I like the sword more even beyond fashion or whatever. (Oh btw edit I’m not saying helphens is better but I personally prefer it for it’s scalings and stuff, cause it actually gets a higher ar than darkmoon greatsword if you have more strength than dex and high int)

Maybe the troll knight sword doesn't have a greatblade phalanx skill bc there is technically already the spell. And, uh, the greatblade phalanx spell has the highest poise damage of the non-skill phalanx spells, while glintblade phalanx spell does the lowest. The AoW variant of GBP does fucking 40 poise damage with all 4 blades, so if the greatblade phalanx skill follows the same formula, just imagine the kind of *violence* you'd be capable of, everything would suddenly have the poise of a ceramic plate.

It would have been really nice to have Loretta's War Sickle and Lazuli Glintstone Sword to be able to cast spells like it was a Glintstone Staff. I'm actually in the middle of a Int run using a mix of melee and spells. I've had good times using Loretta's War Sickle, Sword of St. Trina, and Bastard's Stars. Sword of St. Trina is an amazing weapon, it does fall off in damage in the late game but the utility is fantastic. It trivializes Rune Bears, I was able to put one to sleep and put it back asleep just as it was getting back up. I think Helphen's Steeple and Rosus's Axe are terrible weapons. I couldn't do anything with Helphen's Steeple and it didn't feel good to use. Rosus's Axe I had a hard time landing any of the skill against anything that moves half an inch. I also think Dark Moon Greatsword is overrated. It didn't feel good to use outside of the ranged heavy. Its not bad just overrated.

That cannot be true. It has some of the highest damage in the greatsword category buffed or not buffed, innate frost build up buffed or not buffed. The only less part is the heavy attack without the buff but it is forgiven because when it gets buffed, it hits harder than some of the highest damaging weapon skills without costing fp except initially and also being able to proc frost from range. It is a solid weapon without the buff but the second best weapon imo with the buff. You probably were not using it right.

From a game design theory perspective, I understand why they have to have "bad weapons" - these are skill testers (by which I mean, can you figure out they are bad and avoid them... easy with a wiki, but harder on a first blind playthrough). But, I wish they were all at least interesting. Serpent God's Curved Sword is a great example of an interesting "bad" weapon. As a damaging curved sword, it is outclassed by so many weapons, but because it can return health on a kill, it has an interesting place in your inventory. Or Sacrificial Axe. I wish, all the bad weapons here had some interesting thing they did like that. Say, suppose the Crystal weapons all did plus 200% damage to Crystal-type enemies. What if the Carian swords (Knight's Sword, Troll Knight's Sword) raise the damage of Carian sorceries by 20%? You could come up with interesting tweaks and random side effects for all of them. (+5% flask restoration, improved elemental resistances, and so on... I mean, the list is endless.) It would have been fun to try to find all these side effects and they would have redeemed a lot of weapons with great design. Like, all the Crystal weapons look cool as heck. They should be useful for *something*, etc.

There are so many reasons to have "bad" weapons. Weapon with lower AR but better moveset will always win in my book. Some weapons are designed for early/mid game. You use them untill you find something better, and it communicates progression. A lot of from's fanbase is lazy and unimaginative and only goes for the highest AR. My favourite weapons are Crescent Axe and Beastclaw greathammer which are both outclassed but I couldn't care less. And for the really bad weapons, it's always great to have them for challenge runs. Favourite runs that I did in DS3 were Dark hand, whips and Bows only (not that they are the worst, but nowhere near optimal).

Top 4 are int weapons. And 5 is half int lol. I used them all a bit ony 1st playthrough. Loved the death ritual spear the most. Similar to mohgs spear in effect, except non local. Because of int weapons being so good at a distance, i didnt know how much mechanics of the game i missed my first time through. I killed regular enemies before they seen me coming. And bosses i just roll dodged and kept distance Thats what i like about this game though, the game is very different depending on your build. Im doing a strength build now ising just the large club. Ive destroyed most bosses first try. But i had a problem with the gargoyle right before the mountain tops. Because he flys back and forward so fast i couldn't land attacks and i would get caught in his spinning BS

Square Off does more poise damage, has more range, and the R2 version can toss non-boss enemies. It also comes out quick like Unsheathe. It’s literally just the straight sword version of Unsheathe. As for spinning slash, I’ve only gotten use out of it on status build for quickly building up frost or bleed, and only because the skill combo is faster than a normal light attack combo. The damage really doesn’t impress me, and I have yet to get it to break poise on a boss.

@@danielpatterson1576 The first hit of spinning slash comes out faster than square off and all 3 hits combo dealing 33.5 (14.5+4.5+14.5) poise damage, which higher than Unsheathe R2 of Square off R1. You can also easily stunlock enemies with consecutuve spinning slashes until you stancebreak them, which is something you can't do with square off.

Between Darkmoon GS and Death's Poker, I will always choose Death's Poker because of the additional damage enemies get from the blackflame (??) trail from the L2+R1 attack...the only edge from Darkmoon GS is that it's weapon art is a projectile.

Honestly don’t use the Dark Moon Greatsword. Fully charged R2 projectiles do more damage and stance damage than Heavy Transient Moonlight, AND YOU CAN SPAM IT FOR FREE. Positioning no longer matters, spacing has now become a joke, and with a summon you might as well be beating up children. I literally went and watched someone else fight the boss on KZbin afterwards because I didn’t feel like I got the correct experience. I still have no idea how to dodge any of Maliketh and Godfrey’s moves because I just kept backpedaling and spamming R2, it honestly felt like cheating.

I feel like calling Loretta's Slash a nonunique skill is unfair when that's clearly the weapon the skill originates from. I almost feel like it should be classified the other way around, as a 'unique' weapon skill that can be put onto other weapons. I know that's kinda an oxymoron, but I think it makes sense.

Unique literally means one of a kind. Doesn’t matter where it originates from it still isn’t unique. Also you acquire the AoW before the weapon

That may be true in a lore-sense, but in gameplay you literally get the AOW before you get the weapon it originates from.

Impression i got from both weapons are that reduvia is an physical bleed smg while kris is a magic sniper with its ability to penetrate enemies body too. Kris got fp efficiency in its favor since you only need 10 fp and some buffs from talismans and or spells to do massive damage

Only because of the bleed, and even then if you build right, the bleed won’t have an impact until the endgame when hp and resistances get high. Plus the Kris still has more range and base damage.

radahn gs should be way higher: 1 its obtainable early game, and +0 is already op 2 in the game play u only used L2s and R1s, the most broken attack (after L2) is jump attack, paired with crow set and jump talisman (high dmg easy stagger) 3 its a somber weapon, u can upgrade it fast 4 the ash of war does insane dmg even at low int, this makes it perfect for player focusing on strenght (such as me in the first playthrough) 5 during the ash of war u get hyperarmor, so with enough health, u can just tank bosses BONUS its an incredible fun weapon, death ritual spear and others are just op and requires a spam on the ash of war, u gotta be a dumbass to actually enjoy that kind of gameplay At leasts top 8

@@youwyit certainly got its uses with its block frame heavy attack, being 3rd longest straight sword, and great scaling to strength for an int weapon. Its a weapon for strength build or high level muscle mage (high str and int) since it got among the highest ar at high stats which can be viable option compared to cold weapons since there are ways to proc frost without using melee attacks

​​@@modsas9309I'm sure there are genuine uses for the guard it has, but they are immensely rare. The guard boost and defensive stats are pretty terrible, so when it comes to bosses, you'd be more likely to get guard broken and get hit extra hard. It has uses, but even more downsides. Length barely matters. Most of the straight swords are plenty long, and many are practically the same length as the Carian Knight's Sword. The Strength scaling isn't even that great, and the skill only scales with int. It's just an awkward scaling, and you'd be better off just using a magic longsword with Carian Grandeur. It could very well be great at really high level, but that's not how most people use it in pve or pvp.
