Javier Sama - honestly, IMO Disgaea 5 had the worst mechanics. They ruined so many of the mechanics that used to feel so rewarding for the sake of quality of life changes. Disgaea 2 was probably my favorite of the series, even though hey cut out staticians. They kind of ruined Disgaea 5’s capture system by making it super easy to capture enemies and making it less rewarding to add them to your team. You lose the progression of training new members from scratch and it makes adding captured members to your team seem like a lesser option. The gameplay was ludicrously easy until post game where you had to grind for hours upon hours between each unlocked level. Equitable items become so so so useless post game too, because even the epic items seem to have sucky stat additions. I know that there is a way to make them add a ludicrous amount of stats, but my point is that it’s needlessly complicated and tedious when they should let you make use of the best items in the game without endless grinding. When stats where simpler I felt like 100 to 200 levels on an item was a fair grind, but now it’s gotten ridiculous and even at the end of the many many levels that an item can have they still have negligible stats compared to the stats that my main character has. I probably have a few more examples, but I’ve already wanted enough of my time. I’ll try to go into more detail and some other examples if you want me to. I guess you can’t please everyone. I mean I’m happy that you like where the series is going. I just wish I did too. Hopefully the insane numbers of the 6th game won’t hamper my experience, hopefully it won’t be to easy until the post game, and hopefully it won’t have insane jumps between challenge levels.

if we're talking graphics the newest will usually always be the best all things considered, but gameplay and story wise it's open to interpretation and comparison to the other games.

Saugen - I mean one can argue that pixel graphics are more endearing or more appealing to certain audiences, but I generally don’t care too much about the graphics as long as it’s serviceable. It’s mainly gameplay and story that I care about.

Nobody should show a console exclusive any appreciation, consoles monopolizing a game is bad for the game and the gamers and the more people that support it, the more it will happen. Disgaea 3 and Disgaea D2 are both F tier games for a reason, F tier means literally unplayable, since they require specific hardware they are... literally unplayable. The fact that people don't consistently call out developers for exclusivity is a mind fuck. Everybody makes excuses even though there isn't a single good excuse for a game to be made exclusive.

I'm gonna put it out there that I don't like the Disgaea 1 rereleases that use the HD sprites. I feel like a big charm about Disgaea 1 is in the tone and the art style and not only does the more faded and rougher look of the PS2 graphics add to that, but I think the bright and colorful HD sprites actually clash with the tone of the game. Disgaea 1 had a bit of an eerie art style, just look at the prinny and its obivous how much they have been cutened up, but also an example I like is the Jack'o'Lantern cut in from the original much more than in the remakes. Also HD sprites actually caused some original classes that were only in Disgaea 1 to be replaced with sprites from newer games essentially erasing them from existence. Also I'd say D2 and DD2 are the best, and Phantom Brave is literally my favorite game.

I've played and finished all games, finished disgaea 5 recently, and I've gotta say disgaea 4 is my favorite. not only is the story great, but the voice acting feels so fitting, and has a lot of unlockables. Although that game really did show disgaea isn't made to be played multiplayer, those functions can be completely ignored.

You could consider Makai Kingdom as a Disgaea Spin-off, considering that they're in the same universe. Zetta and Pram makes a lot of cameos on Disgaea games and Laharl, Etna and Flonne did make a cameo on Makai Kingdom.

Disgaea is a series I like the IDEA of more than actually playing them. I love the goofy characters and stories, and I’m fond of the battle system as well. It’s just that I’m a completionist, and these games are long enough just playing casually. The thought of completing one of these games cripples me with fear and dread, and as a result I tend to either not play them at all or give up very early on due to the overwhelming amount of options and things to do. I really wish I wasn’t this way, but what can you do… To this day, I haven’t actually finished the main story on any of them, despite playing every mainline entry. I think I got the farthest on D2, because I really loved the characters and story, and I was happy to finally have a Disgaea game with HD sprites and backgrounds.

Disgaea 1 is my favorite. Not because of the story or the characters, but because the game was simple and fun. I spent 160 hours on it and I loved every minute of it. The combat was simple and easy to learn. You can very easily grasp how to become very strong in the game just by playing it and didn't need a guide or the internet to help you. I discovered everything, got everything, maxed out what I needed, and was never lost on what to do. No over Disgaea title made me feel the same way. Also I got the game on the DS or something so it was much easier to play compared to turning on my tv and game console and being restricted where I could play. If based on characters than D5 takes the win with the most interesting cast. Best mc goes to D2 Adell. Best story is D3.

The unbeatable floors in Disgaea 1 thankfully seems to be fixed in D1 Complete. I've blown through hundreds of floors and it seems like the exit portal is always on the same platform you start on, so you can always just walk to it.

For me the character classes were what made me go back and play a certain Disgaea. As such Disgaea 4 had me with the Super Hero and Prism Ranger class. I enjoy all of the Disgaea main games but Disgaea 4 Complete + is where it is at for me, dood.

The Prinny games are my favorites. Both are really well made games that are obviously VERY heavily inspired by the classic Ghouls 'n Ghosts titles. If you don't like that style of gameplay you're not gonna like them, but if you do they are both masterpieces imo.

I know in original DIsgaea 1 I would also run into spots in the item world where progression would be locked on a floating island, and it's the worst when the portal is way out there, but I've consciously noticed in the Disgaea 1 Complete remake that the portal is pretty much always attached to the platform you started on and doesn't have any geo panel effects underneath it anymore so that is a major improvement.

Disgaea 2 actually probably has the most hours of all the Disgaea series for me, but I like the revamped original and D2 much more. D4 was probably the one I liked the least.

If I have to grade them respecting the graphic limitation per console and the fact that new mechanics are meant to be added as games are coming. Sure, Disgaea1 is the best game and it's also the best one to start from. My personal favorite is Dis3. The Delinquent/Honor student morale flip used was way to funny and Almaz is still my favorite character on all series. The idea of teaming up a "hero" and a "demon" and making the demon the hero and the hero a demon was not only fun but it made an interesting point of analisis. I remember how Almaz had ideas to steal back his title and discarding Mao yet his "hero" conviction (even as a demon) stopped him from doing despicable things, showing him go oposite from the Super Hero who would go as far low as needed to have an heroic battle

I played 1000+ hours of OG Disgaea 1 on PS2 and the exit portal was ALWAYS on the same island as the start portal, seemingly hard-coded in. I genuinely don't know if getting stuck as mentioned in the video has ever been possible in D1, or if he's confusing it with another one.

I remember renting one of the earlier versions and got intimidated and confused by the item world stuff and it just seemed like a chaotic mess of nonsense so I didn't really play it. But then I bought D5 kind of on a whim/on sale and really enjoyed it and finally understood it's tone.

Disgaea infinite was the first game I ever played of the series. And I was so confused through the whole thing. Last year picked up d5 on switch and loved the voice acting + art. Now waiting for D6 to get released here.

Now personally my favorite is 4. Valvatorez is my favorite main hero. This former badass Tyrant Vampire. Changed into a goofy lovable Vampire who loves Sardines. Disgaea 2 in my opinion has the best story.

I still remember playing D1 on ps2 and loving it. When D2 came I was so happy about all the improvements with the graphics and animation. D2 was actually really good and I have good memories about it. In fact, after that all the other episodes were good but never reached my heart. D5 complete on pc is on huge discount now, might think about buying it.

I've just started playing Disgaea 5, so I can't discuss about it, but I've played every other Disgaea game so I wanted to share my thoughts on every one I played ( I'm not counting the " spin-off " ones, but know that I appreciated them all ): - Disgaea 1 = My first (And favorite) Disgaea game. The story was really well played alternating moments of funniness with moments of sadness and friendship; gameplay was also ok for being the first in the series, and there were many mechanics that had to be learned ( Item World was really complicated for me to grasp at first ). - Disgaea 2 = My personal worst. If I were to describe as to why, it's because I felt it too "serious": they took out most of the funniness from the first and replaced friendship with love, which is ok but I found it quite annoying in the long run... - Disgaea 3 = This one was also not so good in my opinion. It was basically quite the opposite of Disgaea 2, in which the prevailing part was "the funny scenes", but the story didn't really stand out, so it hasn't really given me anything worth remembering (Storywise). - Disgaea 4 = Now this is the second title that really standed out. The main character is wonderful: he does make funny words, but he always communicates something deep when he talks ( I really appreciate, and still remember, the part of how he tries to explain of how living does not necessarily mean " To have an identity ", but rather " To exist "; it really moved me ). I also found the thematic of " Love " from Disgaea 2 to be really well implemented. - Disgaea D2 = I was really excited to see a direct sequel of my first Disgaea! The characters were wondeful ( As they were originally ), but what I really appreciated here was the gameplay and large customization of skills ( You could choose the " Abilities " of every character upon creation, and you could inherit that selected " Ability " to your main characters, creating and finding the best combinations possible ). Really, really appreciated. All in all, my personal tier list would be: S) Disgaea 1 A+) Disgaea 4 A) Disgaea D2 D+) Disgaea 3 D) Disgaea 2

As a long time veteran of the series, I decided to share my own tier list of these games and the basic reasons why. I did play them in order since I got into the series prior to the release of Disgaea 2 (at the time I didn't know the stories were self-contained and pushed myself to go as far into the post-game as possible before picking up Disgaea 2). *Disgaea 1: Tier B* The titular starting place, and while I do suggest that any fan of Disgaea at least play the story mode, the post-game leaves much to be desired and there are many annoying things that are fixed in later sequels. The story itself is spectacular, but it works best as a guideline for the future games as Laharl, Etna, and Flonne are very enjoyable to watch. *Disgaea 2: Tier A* In many ways, the first sequel to Disgaea was a straight improvement over it's predecessor. Not only were there additions like the Dark World and Land of Carnage which drastically improved the grindy nature of hour of darkness' endgame, but felonies were added, allowing for an easier time grinding for experience and unlocking things in the Dark Assembly. The story itself cameos Etna, further developing both her and the original trios characters, as well as introducing several memorable main cast members. *Disgaea 3: Tier D* Undoubtedly the worst Disgaea cast, and most lackluster story. Despite new features like Magichange and evilities, the Geo Blocks puzzles are either tedious or frustrating. The class world also made some features which were previously easier to obtain, now require further grinding. To put the final nail in the coffin, this sequel is also when characters which used to be packaged in with the game were added as dlc. While not really all that major, it feels like a slap in the face when 10 of the secret characters are just basic reskins of generic classes. *Disgaea 4: Tier S* This is the quintessential Disgaea experience in both story and gameplay. Geo blocks are used only when necessary and present unique puzzles that couldn't be replicated with geo symbols. Monster Fusion works well in tandem with magichange and creates very interesting situations for the player to overcome in story mode. Every character in the cast grows as the journey progresses, and have redeeming qualities in both story and combat. Item World is much more interesting due to online features, and while Chara World is still annoying, it has much less prominence here. The post-game genuinely feels rewarding, but isn't as much of a spike as previous titles as the game hasn't held back any punches throughout the core storyline. DLC is treated with much more care than previous titles, featuring full bits of story and genuinely relays a sense of passion from the development team. Online mode is unique to this title, and being able to make/share your own stages as well as create a band of pirates to attack/aid others in the Item World is very enjoyable. *Disgaea D2: Tier E* A lot of points about this game feel rushed, and as a result things were cut from this game. Mounting feels massively inferior to Magichange and Fusion. Sure, a lot of grind has been taken out, but nothing has been put in it's place, resulting in a much easier and frankly boring Disgaea title. It doesn't help that the story rivals that of Disgaea 3 in how bad it is, and if these characters didn't already have a strong background then it would definitely be worse. The only real good thing to come from this title is the Cheat Shop, which rewards players who actively progress the post-game as soon as possible as well as erasing the grind (it's no wonder that it became a mainstay in the series). *Disgaea 5: Tier B* While it was a massive step up from the previous entry, this title borrows way too much character-wise from Disgaea 2 & 4. That doesn't hinder it's story or post game in any way, but it distinctly feels like the game lacks innovation. What it does make up for is an amazing amount of polish that could easily reinvigorate any fan despite the fact that all of the season pass dlc was available from launch. A lot of powerful gimmicks were introduced in order to clear maps, such as Land Decimator, which made minor tasks once you got deep into end game less grindy. All in all, not a bad place to start, but it's certainly not the best in the series.

As a fan of the games that never got into the end game, i have to say that the only game where i strove to kill Baal was 5. The gama was just so clean and fast that you just kept going. I'd argue that 5 is A rank

D5 is a C for me because the story and most characters were generic and the features let us level up the fastest ever but felt unrewarding compare to previous disgaea which I really hope D6 increase grind to combat the speed of our growth. But yeah u know D5 is easy and short when someone is able to kill Baal max stats a little over 100hr

Included in the list I would include: Rhapsody (PSone) Marjolly from Disgaea (unlockable) is from that. And was the first of the series. LaPucelle Tactics (PS2): this one is the Story of Priere who has been continuously unlockable, and was pretty good, also pre-Disgaea. Phantom Brave: was really good, but had a hard time with the Gridless style. Makai Kingdom: I loved the Vehicle System in this. Wish they had kept this, and even advanced it. Especially with the reoccurrence of the "Prism Rangers" Soul Nomad: post Disgaea 2, this one was rather different. Interesting story... battle system was very different. Cross Edge: an NIS crossover game. Never got too far into it, but seemed fun.

Disgaea 5 is definitely the best one. But I understand why people like 4. I believe 4 has a good story, but because I don't play disgaea for its story, and for the gameplay, I have to give it to 5, as it is simply the peak in terms of mechanics, animations, etc.

Disgaea 3 was my favorite of the bunch. Dont know why but i just love it. Between the fun cast, the story and the introduction of new mechanics its my favorite. I loved disgaea 1s cast as well but the gameplay differences in 3 made the difference. Hoping for a d3 switch release currently as my vita kinda bit the dust.

How did you get stuck in the item world in D1? Once you make a team of throwers and have a character with a knockback or swap spaces skill the item world is a breeze. It's how I got the best gear and maxed them out while being super under leveled. Maybe it was a older version problem. I played the DS version.

In the PS2 version there is the possibility of the floor spawning an exit panel that's too far away to throw to for anyone in the game, I think 7 tiles. Making some floors in the original release LITERALLY unclearable regardless of team comp.

Magichange did Exist in Disgaea 2. Still nice Video :) (Considering PC Editions / PS3 Editions) my list would be Disgaea 5 Disgaea D2 Disgaea 4 Disgaea 1 Disgaea 2 Disgaea 3 so Disgaea 5 is my top because i love how it introduced a lot of new ideas on what to do, and how to setup. it feels like it gives me a lot of options on what to do. Followed is Disgaea D2. thats because i think it plays the smoothest and some of the Quality of life changes it introduced (such as Promoting the non-plot characters). i also like its Evilty Inheritance where you can take another characters evilty. then Disgaea 4. I think it looks and plays gorgeous, but as i dont like geo blocks and think its lategame is worse than D5's and DD2's, thats why its here. Followed Disgaea 1. Considering it was built from notthing it really is a epic game. Its story is top notch and playing it feels neat; however it feels unfluid and slow compared to the other releases for me. that and its lack of mechanics introduced later on give it a hard 4th place, however i think its a great game. Then Disgaea 2. I think for the most part this is a improved Disgaea 1. I got to give it a minus though for the tideous map collection for Land of Carnage, its Story and the odd Felony System. while i played this game the most out of every Disgaea title, ive got to say that at the very least the top 3 is nicer to play in almost every aspect. Last is Disgaea 3. As i mentioned i dont like Geo Blocks, which were introduced here. I like the general story and would say its the 2nd best story, if it wasnt for mao beeing as annoying as possible. The introduced new Weapon skill learning wasnt quite mine either and i felt like stages were pretty annoying in this part.

For me Disgaea 5 is the best one, I guess I just played it at the right time and left quite the impact. Probably after its 7 as its just an amazing experience (even thought I have only played it 30 hours so far). Next would be 1 for getting me into the series. 3+4 are next. I got a Vita just to play them and I fondly remember that period.

3 is really underrated. I think mostly because of the graphics and the fact that so far it has not been ported to either PS4 or PC. But still on the top of my personal tier list. At least on par with the 4th. Regarding the current tier list, I personally would swap the 4th and 5th. The 5th characters are too generic... Also as it was noticed, they repeat some features of the previous ones. When I first saw Killia, I thought - Oh, looks like Valvatorez pretending to be Laharl and using Adell's fighting style. The girl also looks like any generic tsundere. Also she resembles a mix of Rozalin and Artina, but just more posturing. There is not a single character from 5 that could catch my interest. I couldn't even remember the names of most of the characters from 5. I has not yet finished Disgaea 2, however, to fully compare with others. But still.

agree!! killia is just not a very memorable or likable protagonist, seraphina is obnoxious, and basically every other character is just so boring that i hardly remember them. the most i can really say is that usalia and majorita have cute designs but if you asked me to name one thing about them i couldn't tell you. disgaea 4 has its problems with most of the characters being reduced to a running gag and fuuka and desco also being kind of annoying but at least they're unique and the game has charm and retains the feel of being a disgaea game

@@monicaraybrandt Exactly! Well, about the humor in 4th, I guess it's not so much a problem, as it's Disgaea's way of delivering humor in general, mostly ironic. It's just part of Disgaea, making puns even out of moments that are supposed to look like a tragedy - I look at that as sort of a calling card of the series. Perhaps the 4th just has this more than the rest. As for Usalia, yes - a definitely cute character, but that's all. If you ask me to tell you about her, then all that comes to mind is "A cute bunny girl who loves(?) curry." And if you ask what is the point of Majorita - "A character who only exist to be a temporary bad guy to show that Usalia is a good person. Also - another loli-type character to add to the roster." Yeap, and that's it. At least, they have a more memorable visual design than others.

Personally, for my favorite it would be a tie between 3 and 4. 3 brought a lot of things, 4 expended nicely on them. At the same time... I don't really like Mao, but it really feel like the whole game shines because of the interaction between the characters, and his character is the most important in that, not just because he is the main character but because he's so extra. Disgaea 4 as a cool cast, but the more I look back on it the more they feel like they each have one line... Except Altina and Emizel who just feel like they're vibing in the background. But at the same time, each story is great in its own right, DIsgaea 3 is all about that over the top level of stupidity that manages to slip itself in the more serious moments of the game without feeling like they're too much while Disgaea 4 does not hesitate to take a break in the humorous tone and be more serious at times. But in the end... Disgaea 3 is the superior one because Kyoko and Asuka. I am biased -also the unholy amount of fanservice with all the postgame characters. Disgaea 1 would be the next best thing. The story is great, cast is... Let's just say that if everyone forget Gordon, Thursday and ... The girl, there's a reason. But Laharl, Flonne and Etna are great... In Disgaea 1, because they also suffer from having one line too when they are not the MCs. But the story is very good, good world building, good humor, good balance between humor and serious moments, better than in 4. But the game is broken and has no chill towards the end of the story. What I mean by it's broken is that there's a clear dichotomy between what's good (Magic and swords) and bad (Axe and Monsters) and this makes the game feel very clunky, and somewhat barebone when compared to more recent entries. Though I still love getting back to it from time to time and the graphic style and character design of the first one is by far my favorite. Disgaea D2 is... Weird. On the one hand you get super interesting post game stuff like the Rasetsu Mode and the ability to build up characters without needing to level up items, which is insanely funny and I would have loved to see more of that. On the other hand, you get the return of absolutely busted magic and unbalanced game mechanics... And by busted magic I mean "if you use a staff" because Books had everything to be great, but took the worst of both worlds instead of the best -and once again, they were completely scrapped, what the fuck ? And the story is... I'm not sure I'd say it's bad... But it's not good. It has this issue with sequels where the characters stories were clearly over so they needed to add something more, and I like Sicily but a lot of it -like Xenolith and Etna secretly being extra super powerful- felt like a miss. Shout out to Barbara, I absolutely adore her and her interaction with Salvatore in her DLC. Disgaea 2.. I dunno, haven't played it. I'm kind of iffy about the characters, but I don't have anything to say. Disgaea 5 has some qualities... Like being able to change colors however you like... And also the fact that you can get DLC characters from the very beginning of the game meaning you are not forced to suffer the annoying cast. The rest ? You can throw it in the trash. The story ? Trash. Characters ? Trash. New game mechanics ? Trash. The fights of the main story ? You pick up all those fights with the armor guy and that shitty stupid fight against a bajillion zombies where the difficulty suddenly jumps you like you're a Londonian prostitute in the 1890's and dunk that shit directly in the dump. New quality of life improvement ? First you define improvement and then you throw that shit away. And last but not least: locking saves behind a language wall and also hiring people that visibly do not speak a certain language for the translation of said language ? Fuck you.

i would say Makai kingdom is my fav as its the game that got me into this whole series , but thats more of a setimental fav , as far as game play and story and such id have to say its 5 and closely behind that is d2 . Other then that id say i 100% agree with this tier ranking alough i haven't played any of those prinny games .

It's hardcore but, the main feature is all the mechanics you can use to "cheat". Bribing, overleveling, manipulating game difficulty, stealing, kidnapping, holding enemies hostage... The actual story mode is a joke if you use these mechanics but, you'll have to use them to deal with the infinite random dungeons. The game is only really over when your characters are basically invincible.

Disgaea D2 also had a lawsuit over it because the translation added a bug that, if I recall correctly, broke a few ps3's when it froze on some fire animations. Perhaps that has something to do with its lack of a rerelease as well?

For me Disgaea 2 is the best, then Disgaea 1, 4, 3 and 5. Didn't play 6 yet, but all are great in their own way. But Disgaea 2 is just very unique, quirky and has a ironic beginning not to mention the great love chemistry. Disgaea 2 will always be my favorite Disgaea game as a result of that. Disgaea 1 is definitely a strong second for me, but only if you get the bad ending; it really pulled on my heart strings especially how well the game brought up the elements through out the game to lead to that final scene.

Since the most important factor is basically story and characters D1 is really good. I'm kinda surprised by the amount of D5 hate I'm seeing in the comments, because I really liked the characters have more serious and tragic backstories. Sorry, but I found D3 to be the worst because I just couldn't connect with any of the main characters in that one. The reversal idea was cute I guess, but it replaced too much character DD2 is hard for me to say, because so much of the story is just the characters screwing around rather than really trying to accomplish anything, but I do like the characters and the final scenes are my favorite from the series.

I enjoyed Makai Kingdom, though never actually finished it. Phantom Brave I love. La Pucelle was probably the "first" Disgaea game, as it has such a strong resemblance to them. The grid, the netherworld (laid out just like the item world) streams of coloured geo energy instead of geo crystals and panels, even mushroom characters that say Eri a lot and are really annoying.

I'd personally go 1-D2-4-5-2-3. Story of D2 could have been a bit better, but I do truly hope for a port of it at some point. It's not completely impossible either, cause unlike 3 the series didn't almost die after it, and they took a long time porting 4 over to PS4 anyhow.
