I disagree, with a good strategy you can plow straight through this game with no to minimal grinding. That unless you're a completionist. @The Completionist You ain't got the balls Jirard. I did a no-grind playthrough of Disgaea 2 on my own channel as well and it has some spots that are a bit more dicey than anything in Disgaea 1.

It would have been better if this was a bundle of Disgaea 1, 2 and D2. since those games are connected story wise. Then I feel 50 bucks is worth it for old games

Yeah quite a rip-off that it's $67 CAN. Love the game, but this seems far too greedy of a move considering their last entry to the series cost less than half this price. Oh well, time to reboot the good ol' PS2 and play there if needed. Unless they make it a bundle with some of their other games, I ain't buying. And/or they just make it cheaper for this remaster. No offence to the DEV team. Love ya'll, but wtf lol. Just cause most of your loyal loving original fans have jobs and other adult things going on now, doesn't mean we're money-printing machines. Literally the only thing that kills disgaea 1 for me after having played the later games is the speed of the game. I'm so used to my cursor and characters moving at such a blistering pace that the absolute glacial pace kills any enjoyment I used to get out of it.

Then why even buy it? Just get it for PC or emulate the damn thing. I like Takehito Harada's older lineless style more too. So I bought his art books. If you feel guilty for emulating,You can support the company and its artists other ways and enjoy the media at your convenience. I don't think that this remaster is worth it. All that you get is art.

I've been wanting to start playing the Disgaea series for a long time, but bought 5 before they released 1. I've been really enjoying it and blowing through it since I've been using the DLC characters. It reminds me of Fire Emblem game play except way more flashy. I love it and will probably pick this up after I finish it!

im a disgaea vet. disgaea 5 is terrible in my opinion. they changed too much from the core disgaea. instead of adding upon the core version they just changed it. and it sucks. disgaea 1 will forever be the best version of the game. people also complain about price, but over the years disgaea 1 including the remakes sold more than ANY of the newer versions. kinds tells you something. if d5 was selling "well", d1 would never have been ported to switch and upgraded visually..... 1 is the best version of the game. if they expanded on one, adding new classes, new monsters, more items, more story, more everything, they could have expanded the game. but sadly, they ruined it with 5. its horrible. i can always go back and replay disgaea, i havent touched 5 since my initial 30 hours....its that bad in comparison for me. generally, those who start with 5 hate 1, and those who love 1 dislike 5.

As a veteran of the series who's played Disgaea since it's beginning on PS2, this remaster was actually very dissapointing. Many old fans such as myself were hoping for content that's been added throughout the games, such as evilities and possibly overloads. But the only things I'll nitpick are what's in the game, not what some fans wanted. I'm very dissapointed in the skills. The music was remastered (rest in peace, Tsunami Bomb - Invasion From Within, we'll miss you greatly), the sprites were remastered (Sad some of the original sprites were ditched instead of spruced up), but the animations of skills weren't? Look at Laharl's Overlord's wrath - in D2, they were orbs of fire - you could see the fire inside them. In this? Just back to balls again. Overall, this is most definetly not worth the price, I'd suggest going and buying the PSP version if you want a portable Disgaea game. The only thing you'll really be missing is Plenair.

I have the PSP version, buuuuuut I find the hardware itseld to be a bit on the fragile side. The Switch, I personally find a more reliable machine. That said, I can see why the cheaper PSP version would be appealing, and I can see why people would stick with it.

I don't expect my opinion to rally people to boycott the game or anything like that, nor do I expect it to have any results. Heck, I do it myself when I still feel like the previous will do me well enough, and I ain't buying this Day 1 anyways (month of my birthday, so I don't wanna risk a duplicate). But 75-80%? @@surrealbrain4227 Well, the graphics for the skills are left the exact same as the previous versions. There's also many, many ways the gameplay could be sped up, SwitchUp himself describes it pretty nicely. things like skills being left untouched graphically, geo symbols being as slow as they are (Even if they're sped up, watch Disgaea D2's geo Symbols, they clear amazingly fast), and the fact that the magic knight next to Plenair could have extremely easily been a sort of cheat shop (passing bills is still slow and quite annoying to deal with). To me, it feels 75-80% done. It's all a matter of perspective. edit: Legal issues or not, Tsunami Bomb will always live on in our hearts. If you want the genuine experience for that, by the way, when fighting any post-game secret bosses, just go to youtube at play Tsunami Bomb - Invasion From Within on repeat. It's as close as we can get.

For those that have the argument of "They didn't add any of Disgaea X's upgrades so I'll just keep playing what I've been playing". Did you ever think the reason why they didn't add the new mechanics was because they recently released a game with those mechanics and figured if you wanted those mechanics you would play that particular game? They released this game so you can play the original Disgaea game as it was when it was released. Personally I would have been disappointed if they added that stuff to D1 Complete. I bought D1 Compete because I wanted to and expected to play the game as it originally was. Getting upset over this is like buying an old style rotary phone and getting mad that it can't access the internet, it doesn't make sense to me.

There are enhancements that could have been made that would not have changed the story or strategy in any way, but simply made it more fluid to play. Essentially, game design now vs. game design back in the day. To use your rotary phone example, nobody is going to buy that kind of phone to connect to the internet. If someone really wanted the original experience with Disgaea 1, they'd search it out and get the original. To release a remaster of a 15 year old game with none of the lessons learned and new gameplay design elements implemented, and then still ask for $50, is hard to swallow. If they had charged $15-$20 for this, then I'm sure most people would have lower expectations.

You said no one would buy a rotary phone and connect it to the internet. That's my point too, why buy a 15yo game and expect it to play like a new game? You say if you want the original experience then buy the original game, but that also requires you to buy a PS2 as well, that hasn't been in production in over 10 years. So then you gotta buy a used copy of the game and a used consol, which will run you more than the $50 this version cost. Let's say they did add all the bells and whistles to this game, then the only difference between this game and the others is the story, which you could watch on KZbin for free.

I would like to add that grinding is optional. You do NOT have to grind to compete the main story, granted the reason most people play is for post game where grinding is a must. I finished the main story around the 28 hour mark and beat all but 2 stages on the first attempt, the last stage being one of them that took several attempts. But maybe I'm the exception to the rule, I've put in more hours than I'd like to admit in Disgaea games lol

I was kind of disappointed when I heard it was the same as the ps2 game, when there was a remaster of Disgaea 4, which was my introduction to the series, and so much content was added to it, making it my favorite vita game over Persona 4. It has made me respect the developers for the effort they have done with a remaster, and maybe this could have had the same quality as that game. But hay maybe there will be updates for free content, but I will be waiting for a sale till then.

Yea, but maybe I may get it on ps2 someday, I bought Disgaea 2 for $8 in a plain jewel case, and I loved it. I will say that I have just be came a fan of the series this June, and was determined to get all of the main series. I have (2-5) currently, but I am more disappointed with what could have been improved, especially after D4 A Promise Revisited. Maybe better controls with the units being able to move anywhere so you don't have to cancel as much, or even the camera and plan out combos and team attacks more efficiently, especially if this is supposed to be a complete version. I hope the developers will look back at D4 for how they did a remaster right, and how they have made me love the series and what made me respect for a game in 2014. I state all of this out of love, and that is why they can use updates to possibly get fans from newcomers like I was.

I expect the game to have all the content that it gets from the original release et versions after that and like I said, with updated UI and sprite. So, if you liked the game with all the addons, it will be the same. It is just a matters of if you can afford it or not, because the price is a bit high for a port with updated UI, but not crazy high neither. I will buy it, but It will not be an insta buy.

I've seen the complaints people have for the "HD remake" of D1, and I do somewhat agree with them. Yeah the updated models and music are nice but they could have done A LOT more in terms of what a remake should be, how ever D1 also holds a very special place in my heart for getting me into the series as well as into tactic rpgs in general so I still bought it (collectors edition no less) and I still even have the ps2 game (mostly for Tsunami bomb though, a shame it wasn't added for the remake).

To everyone talking about QoL changes, while I completely agree, the thing we aren't seeming to mention is that this is on ps4 and switch now unlike ps2 back in 03, which means that they can push updates later, should they decide to. NIS has always been pretty good about listening to their fans, they might be able to push those out in update form if we tell them that's what they want. They are also working on Disgaea 6 so who knows what new mechanics are going to be coming down the pipe? It's going to be fun finding out. At least this wasn't the complete shitshow the Secret of Mana remake from Squeenix was.

Both have good value for the amount of hours you can spend on them, but if you just want to try the series out with the best of them, go for 5. Story wise it is also the first as everything happens before the other games. You also have all characters from every Disgaea game in that one as already included DLC which is great to get to know them all in case you're interested in picking any of the other games up later.

I can understand why they rated it so highly if they were rating it as a stand alone game. My problem is that it doesn't seem to bring anything new. You can get this exact same game, at about the same quality you see here, for 3 or 4 other gaming platforms. To pay 5× the price of those Disgaea 1s; the added content and updates had better be out of this world.

You don't have to buy it to find out... there are so many places online you can find this information if you just spent 5 minutes (or less) googling it. He also mentioned in the review that there is voice acting.

You can skip battle animations pressing X, I realised after 70hr. It is best to watch a video with tips to avoid missing out. On the other hand, I love this game. The story is silly and may not be very profound, but the characters are so loveable. Grabbed a copy for £10 in eBay, so worth. Is a Disgaea 7 review coming please?

You don't need to spend hrs grinding at all. If you want to complete the main story you hardly need to grind at all with the correct characters and strategy.

@@jglover8 It is called an SRPG, the s part is strategy. I can clear this game with 0 grinding and lots of strategy. Learn where to stand and when to hit. This is beginners' level SRPG compared to games like super robot taisen where you have limited moves and one missed attack can spell game over for you.

Oh I did get a ps2 version of 2 on Amazon, I beaten the story, and it was great. I would definitely recommend getting it if you are a Disgaea fan.

If the gameplay isn't reworked much then I wouldn't pick this up. Since it's lacking the QoL changes brought on through the series, the only reason to go back to d1 is that PS2 rpg charm. If this is lacking that then what's the point?

For a newcomer to the series, it's still a good game and nice to have on the go if you don't have the cheaper Vita option. However as a veteran, it really doesn't give a whole lot of incentive to buy again at the high price.

I can't confirm either way, but it's hard to expect ANY game to like quite as good on the Switch. For me the main drive of purchasing Switch vs PC or Xbone is simply convenience being able to play handheld.

What they needed to do was add in the quality of life stuff they've added to the series as it went on. Item worlding in 1 feels like shit after doing it in 5. Adding features like evilities, magichange etc... would have been nice too, but especially those quality of life features. This is not worth $50, especially when a toaster can run the 1 and 2 PC ports that are only $20 and often go on sale.

Tbh disgaea 5 was the first disgaea i played on switch .... Lot of characters to begin with so was fairly easy....jumping to 1 having to starts from scratch....bit harder maybe im just playing it wrong lol

SwitchUp Its humorous and cute. Aside from the grinding part its overall a very good game. Completing the main story took my 8 yrs old self about 50-60 hrs (that was via me just overleveling Laharl and Capturing a butt ton of monsters haha) Now after 9 yrs I now have a better grasp of how to complete the game and will try to give completing the game a decent shot.

There is not a demo for 1, but there is for Disgaea 5. That demo will give you a good feel for the gameplay throughout the series, although after playing 5 you might find the first title a little less fluid to play. Still worth a look if you're at all interested!

For those wondering you go to the frozen map where everything is invincible but one square. You throw few enemies togethor and throw them in that spot then just wail on it with your weak characters. Either the neko or the succ has a move that can still kill you at high levels but i cant remember which. Once dead youll go up several levels at once and get a crapload of gold which you can use to level up the shop until you get late game gear. Do this for thirty minutes to an hour (which is nothing for disgaea) and the main story can be done with very little effort.

Can’t wait for my deluxe edition to arrive. This “remaster” is a shitty cash grab but at least it comes with some cool stuff. It didn’t improve the dated story at all and it didn’t even update all the sprites to make it at the very least a visual remaster. A load of the classes are replaced with different so NIS didn’t have to remaster the sprites. This remake was a huge disappointment imo but I still love the game to bits and will be glad to replay it. And it’s pronounced dis guy uh not dis gayer lol

Unfortunately I can't compare the two from a personal standpoint as I haven't played 5. I did research for my review on the differences, and I can tell you that while they are quite similar overall, the newer titles added a number of quality-of-life improvements to the combat system. With that in mind, starting from 5 would make it a bit harder to go back to 1 if you find you love it and want more of it. There is a demo for 5 out there as well, in case you aren't 100% sure.

The cheat shop in the newer ones makes things a lot more convenient. Idk how much the remake improves in terms of quality, but i really do think you should play disgaea 1 (either og or this remake) at least once. Just... Don't be surprised when you feel like you need way more money if you use an actual team >.> 5 would be the easier one to get into, but since they like throwing the og trio around, might be good to get to know them.

I'd say much more review than tutorial just because there are so many small mechanics or aspects of the game that I didn't even touch on, such as teaching spells to characters who don't otherwise know them by default.
