Chamber of Secrets is a borderline horror movie. None of the other films give off that lurking sense of pure dread between the petrifications, and the parseltounge sections with harry. Half-blood is ironically a wizard rom-com until the last 30 mins.

My favorite moment that they left out of the movies is when they are at the Lovegood house and Harry goes up to lunar room and there is pictures of all her friends with little writing in between them saying friends friend’s friends that was truly my favorite moment I really shows who Luna is and in the books J.K. Prisoner of Azkaban has always been my favorite. It was the first of the films I saw as a child and years later after seeing all of them it actually is the best not only story wise and entertainment wise but in filmmaking.

Prisoner of Azkaban was the only movie I rewatched time and time again as a child. I mostly attributed that to Buckbeak and the time-turner, but now that you’ve explained it more in depth, it was probably just because it was a damn good movie. 😂🤷‍♀️

prisoner of azkaban could be quite confusing for someone who didnt read the book though. ive had multiple people say to me on and offline that it was never covered that harrys dad was an animagus let alone that he would turn into a stag. thats a major flaw in the movie and that knocks it down to B tier for me.

I completely agree with you about the end of Hallows 2. It was probably the only time I was truly disappointed in a change from book to movie. The first movie, I was a little bummed about what they cut out of the book, but by then, Prisoner was out, and seeing them get progressively longer, I knew they'd have to cut out a bunch to make a 90 minute movie for the time. I already knew they'd have to cut more and more, even predicting the movies getting longer. But to a good degree, the books always talked about, however much he hated it and tried to change it, Voldemort was still a human

I love HP. Saw the films first and read the books for the first time in August 2017 while recovering from surgery (they were so fun). When I first heard of the books like, 16 years earlier, I had no clue what they were about. I did hear that the US version of the first book changed the word "Philosopher's" in the title to "Sorcerer's" with the target demographic being boys approximately 6 to 16. For decades in the US, if a boy voluntarily picked up a book with certain words in the title, like Philosopher, they were putting a Kick Me sign on their own backs. Philosophers spouted philosophy, and that was considered wimpy. In the US, we aren't taught about a Philosopher's Stone in the elementary years. In fact, the only alchemy we ever heard about was a short blurb that those old dudes were always trying to turn lead into gold. Even the teachers snorted derisively afterward. End of lesson. Oddly, girls would likely have picked up the book, thinking it was about philosophy and would have been confused that it wasn't about it at all. I like to think they'd have enjoyed it if they read it to the end, though, but that fact might have made boys decide it was a "girls' book," at least for a few years, and still wouldn't have touched it, because, well, "cooties." In short, HP would have eventually found its US audience, but would likely have taken many years, which no publisher wants to experience. What I found strange was how Bloomsbury (the British publishers) made Rowling alter her name to sound masculine, as (per their own admission) the same target demographic would never touch an action book written by an untested female author (but are okay with it once she's proven herself). So, unless they noticed the opening title pages, which states her name as Joanne in micro font, it wasn't going to be pointed out in any big way until sales proved she had the chops. Conversely, US boys wouldn't have had a problem with the author being a woman, so it seems both societies have hangups among their respective demographics.

I actually pretty much agree with everything you've said. The only thing preventing PoA from being a 10/10 was the firebolt not getting it's glory that it did in the books. Goblet of Fire felt just too rushed in many places, etc in the book the Dursley scene is one of the best Dursley's moments. Halfblood Prince as you said, it was really ruined with the lack of Voldemort's back story. We're not supposed to like him but the book made us feel sorry for younger him. Order of the Phoenix, I hate it for killing off my favorite character... But the department of mysteries scene?! Is that all they had?? And Neville with his parents?! We needed more Neville justice on the movies.

The Department of Mysteries scene was way too long and drawn out in the book. All of the locations were unnecessary except the prophecy room and the death chamber. Also, Neville had more of an arc in the movie than in the book. He actually stands up to Bellatrix in the movie, whereas in the book he is easily in the book

I watched them as a young adult HP fan when they were released, and vividly remember watching the CoS credits roll thinking “yeesh, that was pretty bad but at least they’re changing director for the next one” I liked HBP a lot (despite it missing lots of important things out) because there seemed to be a big jump in quality in the main characters’ acting and the whole thing was more serious and the characters more nuanced. The main problem with the whole HP series is that its foundations are very whimsical and jokey, and the shift in tone to make it a LoTR style mythological saga doesn’t entirely come off. That’s very much the case with the films where the adult actors (and directors) in the early films seem to be leaning into the pantomime element, so the transition is a bit rough.

I want to argue with you on chamber of secrets just because I love it so much and have so much nostalgia around it, yet then I sit here wondering which movie is worse than it and have to agree with you. It’s essentially lost in the shadow of the first one. The first book/movie is wonderful and builds the whole world and 2 just feels like it doesn’t add much to characters, further develops things we already know, but doesn’t thicken really any plot and is lost in the shadow of the first. But the thing that really pushes it over the top for me is Dumbledore’s characterization. Absolutely horrible, he’s a disgusting and just annoyed guy who doesn’t feel anything like Albus Dumbledore. Every character felt a bit off, but him most of all. Also, it’s funny you mention you liked the soundtrack, I thought the score was a massive step down from JW’s masterful POA score, and their new composer wasn’t given enough information or direction. Director Mike Newell really needed to have read the book before making it, that was a no-brainer. Also, I do really recommend reading the books. They are good

The concept and mythology (idk if it’s a myth but idk what else to call it) of the philosophers stone in the US is not well known at all and I actually didn’t know what it actually was until fairly recently when it was in a different show. Since it isn’t very well known here they had to change it to sorcerers stone so people knew it was about magic (and yes we know what philosophers are we aren’t that stupid).

Pretty much agree! Long ago after seeing the movies, I read the books. CoS is also my least favorite book, and definitely 3 hours too long. Am I the only one who noticed that the color palette gets dimmer in each movie following the first 2? It’s not particularly helpful when HBP is so gloomy that you can hardly see sometimes. Yeah, I understand that the stories get darker as they go, but I mean can we at least be allowed to see what’s going on? Personally, Yates is not my favorite director, and I wouldn’t have minded if Cuaron had taken over direction for the rest of the series. Columbus was perfect for the first two, bringing us this world as seen through the eyes of children, with so much whimsy and wonder.

I'd put Order of the Phoenix at C tier at best because they left out way too much. The entire movie is just a montage of sped up scenes lazily put together, except for the scenes with Sirius. The pacing is all over the place. Goblet of Fire is working a lot better as a movie, even if it also left out important story beats.

Awesome 1 - Chamber of Secrets - the novel is quite weak / lacking in actual story, but the film really brings the spook and horror to life (particularly as a kid) 2 - Philosopher's Stone - a purely magical introduction to the world Really Good 3 - Goblet of Fire - the best book by far, and while far from a faithful adaption, the film still captures the principal tone and 'coming of age' feeling of entering into a greater and larger world 4 - Order of the Phoenix - takes great liberties with the novel, but for some strange reason the fast pacing really works 5 - Prisoner of Azkaban - yeah, there is quite some audiovisual interest to bask in (particularly for cinematic snobs), but even the novel had little actual story to begin with, and the film fumbles quite a bit with the tone and humour (Knight Bus, Trelawney, that werewolf...) Ok 6 - Deathly Hallows 1 - (somewhat forgettable, but) okay Awful 7 - Half-Blood Prince - this really puts 'Twilight' into perspective 8 - Deathly Hallows 2 - Voldemort doesn't bitchslap

I find my ranking vary quite bit if I rate them based as movies or adaptation. Prisoner is probably the best movie but a terrible adaptation. Oh and I have rewatched the "Always" scene a tone. Alan's acting when he finds Lilly is so emotional. Beautifully acted.

Americans don’t know what philosophers are in this context. It’s not condescending. Changing the name was the correct choice. Chamber book has the best mystery in the series and best foreshadowing. It’s underrated. I agree about the problems with the movie. I still place it above PoA, GoF, and HPB. I don’t understand why people love POA so much but I also think Cuaron is overrated in general. DH1 is the best movie.

POA is so far clear of the other movies it’s not even close. The long takes, the incredible transitions, the foreshadowing, the symbolisms and the incredible acting especially in the shrieking shack where you get to see 3 iconic British actors go toe to toe as old classmates.

PoA is an extremely well shot film but it's not the most book friendly at all. The inclusion of the shrunken heads was just weird and it missed out big moments like introducing Cedric as an opponent to Harry, Cho as a potential love interest, the Quiddich Final which Gryffindor actually won and loads of things on the Marauders. Even Harry's reaction to Lupin's resignation is done poorly. In the book he actually seemed to care. Then we get the terrible decision to cast Gambon (RIP) as Dumbledore, who respectively, was a horrible choice to follow Harris despite being an amazing actor in all rights.

Sad no one is telling about the outstanding bgm of goblet of fire movie 🙂 🤷‍♂️ Though the movie itself was a awful thing such could be but you must admit that it has the best music score, I guess amongst whole franchise.....no doubt.... So sinister, so mature--- I think this movie was the bridge or starting of whole storyline where it truns to dark movie from as usual happily kids one.... I would trash this movie in bin but its outstanding music scores saved its day....lol 😂 🙌 👏

CHAMBER OF SECRETS is the least convoluted and thematically cohesive Harry Potter story. It is objectively both the best film and book.

I agree that changing the title of the first movie is both insulting and just plain stupid, but the... thing said here is strange. Philosopher's Stone refers to basically the mythical end goal of alchemy. It's both a literal and metaphorical substance that is supposed to give alchemists the ability to transmute anything to anything else. That is why it's so stupid that they changed the name to sorcerer's stone which has no real meaning where Philosopher's Stone is something that would actually be applicable to a world of wizards and potions. But it has nothing to do with Americans or anyone for that matter not knowing what a philosopher is

hot take 6th is a easy D. Yes it had some decent moments, but that is just because 6th book is the best book. But they removed basically all the best scenes from the books aswell as ruined the whole harry ginny, pluss over showed ron and lavender aswell as added unecessary scenes which are just there for filler in a movie which already removed the best parts of the books. The only worthy part to watch in the half blood prince is the last 30 min and even that was cut boringly compared to the book. Like the whole movie was just such a joke in comparison ngl.

Ok I knew that the first book was a little bit longer in America but when you said goblet of fire was 636 pages I was like what the America version is 737 pages or smt like that and then I was watching a different vid and they said that order of the Phoenix was 700 smt pages and then the American version is 870 pages like why are the American versions longer?

The Sorcerer's Stone is an S Tier for me. I really can't put it anywhere else in good heart. I also just love all of the movies. The only one I don't really like is the Goblet of Fire.

The half blood Prince is the worst film in the series by far. It’s an extremely dark book that they turned into a romantic comedy, and they left out so much of the important stuff. The teen romance drama was very overplayed and Harry and Ginny’s relationship was done horribly. They tried to make Ron being poisoned a funny scene which is ridiculous. The burrow being destroyed too, another ridiculous moment. Just a terrible film. Goblet of fire you’ve ranked fairly. Definitely the second worst in the series for me. Deathly Hallows part 2 is the third worst, particularly with the whole Harry-Hermione romance scenes which were never in the book, and the things they made Ron say which weren’t in the book either. Your justifications for hating Chamber of Secrets aren’t valid. Yeah I sorta get the whole du ex machina thing but it’s still a really solid story otherwise, and the film is mostly faithful, it’s defo no where near the worst film in the series.

I think philosophers stone is the worst of the original 8. Not bad, just a bit boring, still a 7 out of 10.
