defense in war is stupid. A guy made zero errors was second in golden glove and was -1.7 war. His name is Freddie freeman 2023. Going by war Miguel Rojas defense makes him better than jazz 😂. FYI they hate each other
@dashx110311 күн бұрын
@@robertaBooey69 I guess I will just say that golden glove voting is basically a joke, and I don't factor that much into how I view a defensive player. And errors are not a great metric in judging a defensive player. Stone-footed, slow-reflex guys who just don't get to balls don't get errors that better defenders who get to balls and don't quite make the play get. It's more complicated than just "zero errors" in my estimation.

I was curious about seeing if you could possibly do a video (or videos) where you explain all the different stats (ops, fip, war, etc) and what has to be done to make those stats what they are. I know it would help people understand the game better. Thanks for the work you do.

I got you OPS: On Base Plus Slugging. So its OBP + SLG. On base percentage is the percentage of at bats in which a batter reaches base whether through a hit, walk, hit by pitch, etc. Sacrifice hits don't count against OBP, but a fielder's choice does. Slugging percentage is bases per at bat, only counting hits. So if I have 10 at bats and I hit a single, a home run, and I walk once, while getting out the other 7 at bats, I would have a .300 OBP (3x reached base/10 AB) and a .500 SLG (5 total bases/10 AB) for an OPS of .800. OPS+ is a number that gives you a picture of how a batter compares to the league average. Basically it takes the league average OPS, which is somewhere around .700 most years, and makes it 100. If a player is above a 100 OPS+, they are above league average. If they are below a 100 OPS+, they are below league average. A 105 OPS+ means you're a reliably average to above average hitter, while a 130 OPS+ or higher means you're an elite hitter. Aaron Judge had a 223 OPS+ last year, so safe to say he's pretty good. FIP: Fielding Independent Pitching. Basically tries to eliminate luck and the skill level of a pitcher's defensive players from the equation. FIP values *NOT* giving up home runs, walks, and hit by pitches, while only giving value to strikeouts - all the outcomes that don't involve fielders. A FIP higher than ERA indicates a lucky pitcher, or one with a very good defense, while a FIP lower than ERA indicates an unlucky pitcher, or one with a subpar defense. WAR: Wins Above Replacement. This metric takes in all stats in all areas of the game to give you a picture of a player's overall contribution to winning. It creates a baseline for a hypothetical "replacement level" player - that being basically a guy you can find on the end of any major league bench who can come in and just play their position without providing any real value outside of taking up space and not making any egregious mistakes. A replacement level player would have a WAR of 0 - they're replacement level, so they would contribute 0 wins over what their hypothetical replacement would do. If you're below 0, you're bad. If you're in the 0-2 range, you're not very good, but you deserve a roster spot. If you're 2 to 4-5ish, you're a definite starter and can even be an All-Star at a weaker position. 5+ is a bona fide star. 8 WAR is what we expect from top 5 MVP candidates. That means that, by yourself, you were worth 8 additional wins to your team. WAR is also a huge part of Hall of Fame consideration. Guys with below 50 career WAR rarely make the Hall of Fame. Almost anyone with 70+ makes it, though there are some exceptions. We're running into some odd ones, though. Batters with less than 2,000 hits basically never get inducted, but Mike Trout and Aaron Judge will probably break that trend, because their prime versions are 2 of the 5 most dominant hitters in baseball history, and Trout was the best player of the 2010s.
