Ranking Character Rosters from Every Mario Kart Game

I've seen people complain about how "Honey Queen took Waluigi's spot." I don't know, with Mario, Luigi, Wario and Metal Mario being the only characters in the MK7 roster to say their names when selected, for me, it was Metal Mario who gave those "replaced Waluigi" vibes. I actually don't mind Honey Queen's inclusion at all. Galaxy was an amazing game!

That's actually my exact train of thought for who replaced waluigi, not to mention Honey Queen was there to fit a heavy weight female besides Rosalina, Metal Mario is there for a heavy weight male, and not to mention that's he's only a Mario palette swap, MM was definitely the one who took Waluigi's spot

This is why I'm not a fan of the whole "X took Y's character slot" statement, because in my opinion, it's not a matter of who got in before the other character, it's just the matter of the absence of said character. Nobody in particular "stole Waluigi's slot" in MK7, Nintendo just kinda forgot to include him with the others for some reason.

It's a quality over quantity thing. Even though I like The Koopalings, the fact they take up 7 character slots, which could've been used for more unique characters, is the biggest turn off. And personally I don't mind Link and the Villagers, but they just don't add that much value to the roster as a whole.

My opinion is never the correct opinion, as I'm just one guy. I personally do not like crossover characters in Mario Kart (Pac-Man in the arcade games being the lone exception) because they always stick out like a sore thumb. As for Tour, I understand it has the dumbest character unlock process out of any Mario Kart game, but I can't emphasize the point enough that even without every single alternate costume and Mii outfit, there are still hidden gems in that game, such as Monty Mole, Hammer Bro, Dixie Kong, King Bob Omb, Chargin Chuck, Nabbit, Meowser, DK Jr, Poochy, Captain Toad, and Dr. Mario. All of whom are not in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe whereas every character from MK8 Deluxe is in Tour except for the crossover ones. That's how I primarily based my rankings between the two games so I apologize if I didn't explain more of that in the video. I completely understand all of your points though and I'm excited for what future Mario Kart rosters are going to look like! Also Gold Dry Bowser is incredible you cannot convince me otherwise 😂

@@GWallPro I might not agree with you on the gold variant ones being cool or that you would rather have only Mario & Luigi in dozent different costumes than actual different characters like Wario, DK etc but I definitely get the distaste for crossover characters. It just feels weird to make non Mario characters have higher priorities than actual unique Mario characters in a Mario game. It almost feels disrespectful to me to the Mario series, as if it’s not good enough or like ‘nothing’ and therefore needs other IP’s to be part of the games. I’m sure if we would replace or include Mario characters randomly into Zelda or Metroid etc people who love those franchises would also be kind of like ‘’wtf?’’ because it just sucks that they take spots from actual cool characters from their respective series away.

For me, Mario Kart Wii will always be a 10 out of 10 roster for me in terms of modern Mario Kart. It's super diverse, Baby Peach and Daisy aside, we got wild card characters like Funky Kong, who had never been in a Mario game before then, Dry Bowser, who had only appeared in New Super Mario Bros for the DS., and Rosalina from Galaxy, who looks a bit different from Peach and Daisy making her first appearance as well. I'd also count Mii Outfits A and B, giving Miis their first appearance as well. I just wish Mii Outfit B made its way into future games instead of the standard and amiibo racing suits.

Kinda nitpicking here, but Mario Kart Super Circuit has three additional characters: Red Yoshi, Light Blue Yoshi and Yellow Yoshi, although they are only available in single pak multiplayer (like the shy guys in DS). There's also the Bomb Kart in 64 and Super Circuit but imo they don't really count.

Great video! I think 7's roster was brought down by what was lacking rather than what was had. I don't mind Honey Queen just for the Galaxy representation, but there were other options (Lubba). And MK8 is easily one of my most mixed rosters. The Koopalings were good additions, and I surprisingly don't hate Baby Rosalina, but it also introduced two of the worst characters in the series (Pink Gold Peach and )

I like to think of each of the numbers as tiers, so there's some range within each number that helps me determine which game goes where. If I was directly ranking the games then BCP would absolutely be above Wii. But I completely see your point. Hope you enjoyed the video regardless!

Not only does Tour have so many characters, but if you weed out all the alt costumes and Mii outfits, the quality characters that are in Tour but not MK8 Deluxe include Monty Mole, Hammer Bro, Dixie Kong, King Bob Omb, Chargin Chuck, Nabbit, Meowser, DK Jr, Poochy, Captain Toad, and Dr. Mario. I really like the mystery behind DK Jr, and his rarity makes him more interesting to me. I don't necessarily like Kamek more than DK, but I think Kamek would've made for a better character in MK64 than DK simply because it was coming off the heels of Yoshi's Island. Though I can also understand the point of DK's inclusion being due to the success of Donkey Kong Country. Very close call honestly but I'm curious of the butterfly effect that would've happened with future rosters if Kamek remained as playable in MK64!

I think the crossover DLC in MK8 was kind of warranted given how bad the Wii U was doing at the time. Now we could've got other past racers as DLC but I think money was the driving factor in picking Link and Isabelle, two characters from HUGE franchises. Heck, even Mercedes DLC was added because Nintendo probably got paid for that by Mercedes. If the next game is a crossover game, I hope GWallPro sees it for what it is and not because of his dislike / bias against crossovers.

I do think both Wario and DK made their spinoff debut in Mario Kart 64! The reason I say Koopa is a better pick is because when I play the first three MK games, I tend to gravitate towards the light weight characters as they're easier to handle/control. Okay while yeah I have the same problem as others with wii vs 8D, I'm gonna defend the way you seem to view crossover characters. I noticed you enjoyed ROB and the DQ characters (from the sports video), but disliked the 8D ones, and I think it's because the older ones felt like cool obscure nods (ok maybe dragon quest isn't obscure but you get the idea. more obscure than the usuals) vs advertisements. The older ones were also fanservice picks for gaming audiences notably older than the usual target audience. Believe me, I was right there being a kid wondering what a ROB was, or who those wild looking characters were at the end of sports mix. It got me to look out and discover more about gaming. The 8D ones are just "Buy Breath of the Wild. Buy Animal Crossing New Leaf. Buy Splatoon 2."

Can someone explain the problem with crossover characters in Mario kart?

He said he'd rather have Mario and Luigi in 10 different costumes than playing as other Mario characters like Wario or Daisy so yeah, he has a really weird taste. Now talking about more "normal" people, I get that if you're playing Mario Kart you want Mario characters. And I agree that I wouldn't want a Mario kart game with half or more of the roster not being Mario characters because at that point just name it Smash Bros Kart or Nintendo Kart. But this isn't the case in Mario kart 8 and deluxe, there are just a couple of crossover characters and they're really cool and popular ones. To me is just people that complains because they can't play as a specific Mario character that only a few care about. Not that I wouldn't enjoy those characters being in the game but it just feels dumb to think it's the crossover ones fault they're not included. If they really wanted or though it was a good idea to include blooper or monty mole they would've done it since the beginning like they have included every single koopaling.

First it's funny how you hate the crossover characters in mainline, but had no probleme with Funky Kong (who is a Donkey Kong Country character), and especially ROB who is in no way a Mario character And second of all, I agree with the MKDX is not a 10/10, but not for the guest reason, but for the ATTTTTROCIOUS choice of Peachette. King Bob Omb, Dixie Kong, Nabbit, Charging Chuck, Hammers Bros, Mounty Mole, Poochy (even tho this last one is garbadge) were all playable Mario Kart Tour characters that would have been an hundred percent better choice than Peach with brown eyes and Toadette's looking hair and slightly different dress. I am so desappointed by this choose, the other 3 were so perfect, this is just an enormous waste. Even on a marketing side, it's so dumb, as Super Mario Wonder released not to far from that dlc wave, in which Peachette was absent, but Nabbit was still playable in it.

I completely get your point haha, however I feel that the DK, Yoshi, and Wario series are just so intertwined with Mario that's it's hard to call them a 100% non-Mario franchise like Legend of Zelda or Animal Crossing. As for R.O.B., I was a kid when I got Mario Kart DS and seeing a robot in there was incredible, what do you want me to say? 😂 And yes I agree! There were SO many better characters from Tour that they could've chosen over Peachette! Hopefully everyone you mentioned gets a chance in a future proper Mario Kart game!
