CLARIFICATIONS & CORRECTIONS:
1. My video contains first editions only. Please note there are currently 6 second edition boxes with changes to some cards. My rankings are based entirely on the original first editions because that's what I'm familiar with. However, all editions are interchangeable with each other! If you want all the cards from both editions, you can buy the first editions & then get the little update packs. See the link below for more info on 1st vs 2nd editions.
2. There are 7 Heirloom cards in Nocturne, not 6. I forgot to include the Magic Lamp/Secret Cave in this video. Still, I would've liked to see more of those because it's a neat idea!
3. Regarding "coffers" in Renaissance vs. "coin tokens" in Guilds: In the video, I implied there was a difference between these. I mistakenly said Guilds was the only expansion that lets you spend coins like money, but coffers in Renaissance work the same way. It just calls them coffers, but you can spend them right away in conjunction with your treasure cards. For some reason, I was thinking you had to wait till your next turn, but you can use them in your buy phase on the same turn you receive them.
After making this video, I learned that later printings of Guilds actually included a coffers mat and changed the wording from "take a coin token" to "+1 coffers." That makes it much less confusing! Just know Guilds and Renaissance use coins/coffers the same way, but this does not change my ranking. Renaissance cards are more generous with coffers than Guilds cards. Plus Renaissance has the Villagers mat to store up coins for extra actions. So Renaissance is definitely more prone to those swingy games like I talked about in the video, whereas Guilds is a bit tamer. If you play Renaissance, I highly recommend using the Colony & Platinum cards from Prosperity; otherwise your game might end prematurely from players stocking up on too many coffers/villagers (just my personal experience).

EPISODE 15 is a complete ranking of every Dominion expansion up until May 2023 (first editions only). About 12 years ago, Dominion was the gateway game that introduced us to the hobby of modern board gaming. My wife and I have been playing Dominion ever since, and we have kept a complete collection of every expansion and promo card.
My wife and I are regular Dominion players, but we are not super serious about it. I still consider us casual players, but we have played every Dominion card multiple times, so I thought it would be fun to rank all the boxes. Still, we just play to have fun; we do not analyze every card combo or anything like that.
Therefore, this video is directed toward a more casual Dominion audience. I just wanted to offer a simplified overview of all the expansions for players who are new to the world of Dominion and are thinking about expanding their collection a bit.
This episode does not tackle the differences between the first & second editions, so please be aware that all the info here is based on the first editions only. I included a link above to read about the differences.

👉April 2024 Update: Rio Grande just released a 2nd Edition of Cornucopia/Guilds in a combined set with some new cards! I haven't tried them yet, but a combined box of those 2 would probably rank higher on my list. I never got the combined set 1st Edition, but apparently they fixed the confusion of "coffers" vs. "coin tokens" in Guilds. Now everything is called "coffers," which makes it _much_ less confusing! See my clarifications in the video description for more info. Anyway, I think that new 2nd Edition Cornucopia/Guilds would probably rank higher on my list as a combined set, as I think it will mix well with Renaissance & Prosperity. Time will tell! Just something to consider!

Glad you enjoyed and thanks for the kind words! That's exactly why I made the video. In my experience, I've talked to so many gamers who have played Dominion once or twice, but weren't impressed enough by the base game to try any of the expansions. The expansions are where Dominion shines. It's so exciting to randomize a new setup and see what strategies you can develop on the fly. Have you played Donald X's other famous game Kingdom Builder? Similarly, it improves drastically when you start mixing and matching expansion sets. Replay value defines Donald X's style.

I remember seaside and prosperity being my favorite Dominion expansion over a decade ago, when I first played the game. I fell behind the newer expansions (I think the last one I tried was Dark Ages), but it is interesting to see those two remain at the top despite so many more expansions coming out in the interim. The more things change, the more they stay the same!

Awesome! Thanks for the comment! Hopefully I could provide an overview of each one. You have a great start on your collection. Since you have some of the more straightforward expansions, my feeling is to maybe check out one of the more complex ones? Renaissance? Menagerie perhaps? Even though they are “ranked” lower on my list, they’re both awesome and my thinking is you should get some of the Events. Menagerie gives you some events, which I don’t think you have yet. Plus you can play around with the “ways.” And then Renaissance gives you LOTS of different ideas to explore. Or there’s Allies! It streamlines all that cool stuff into the easy-to-understand concept of Ally cards. Let me know which one you get next! I’m excited for you!

That would be a lot of work but definitely fun! As far as Kingdom Card sets, that is a great idea! I really wish I would've logged alllllll the combinations we've tried over the years. I never really felt the need to log it because I've always enjoyed the excitement of randomizing the setup (meaning I would never personally return to a setup that I've tried in the past, no matter how fun it was). But now that I have a KZbin channel, I wish I would've logged our sessions because there are definitely some combinations that are better than others. The 3 expansions you mentioned are all great. I would say it depends on the type of game you like. If you want to amass lots of money and wealth, then definitely start with Prosperity. If you like duration cards, go with Seaside. I would recommend you don't get Renaissance _until_ you have Prosperity first, because those 2 work really well together. LOVE THIS VIDEO! I’ve been trying to decide if expanding my dominion is worth it for years!! Is Seaside still your favorite expansion with the second edition? Looking to buy my first dominion expansion and seaside second edition is the only edition I can find available.

That’s a great question and thanks for the comment! I do still like Seaside, but when I made this video, I didn’t realize how much good stuff they removed in the second edition. It’s hard to imagine Seaside without the pirate ship, pearl diver, or embargo cards. There are still plenty of great cards in the 2nd edition. But if you cannot find the first edition, I might recommend Prosperity a bit more, because you get those platinum and colony cards which you can add to any future game of Dominion. Like I mentioned in the video, we almost always use Platinum and Colony in every game we play, even if we don’t have any other Prosperity cards. The second edition of Prosperity didn’t seem to change as much as Seaside did. I would definitely recommend trying to track down the first edition of Seaside. Then you can always buy the little mini update pack if you want ALL the seaside cards from both editions. Just keep your eyes open on eBay or wherever. I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

But anyway, the 2nd edition of Guilds/Cornucopia really made some nice changes. It makes me rethink my rankings a little. After a few plays, I'd probably put it at about #6 or #7 on this list. As someone in the dominion competitive scene who started playing circa 2017 when Nocturne was released, it's interesting to see a different perspective. I think the 2e update packs, at least for prosperity and hinterlands, are essential! Souk, Trail, and Charlatan in particular are so much fun, and really elevate their respective set for me (tho I disagree with the decisions about which hinterlands cards to remove. RIP Silk Road.) My favorite sets are actually Menagerie and Plunder. They add more cards to the game than any other sets, and at a high level they push for more-varied strategies; in 2018, the best strategy on nearly every board was to use villages and simithies or similar cards to draw your whole deck and try to buy two provinces per turn. Menagerie added a bunch comboey cards making funky synergies more frequent. The loot cards in plunder made it so you could still do a lot on your turn without drawing your whole deck. I'm curious about your comment that allies was a simpler expansion then renaissance or menagerie. The allies and the split piles were hard for me to wrap my head around at first. I do agree, though, that alchemy and Nocturne are the worst, but for different reasons than you I think. I don't like the feeling, in lots of nocturne games, that I won or lost because of the hexes. With Alchemy, it's really unfun to get possessed, and a bunch of the potion-cost cards (namely transmute and Philosopher's stone) really don't justify buying a potion.

It's great to hear from a more serious Dominion player! Thanks for the detailed comment; I really enjoyed reading it. :) Honestly, this list was very hard to make, and since releasing this video many months ago, I've gone back and forth in my head of where I might change things. My overall list would still look quite similar. The main change I would make is swapping Guilds and Renaissance. I goofed in the video regarding the coffers/coins thing (because my edition of Guilds has different wording, which was later changed... I addressed this in the video description.) I still feel like Renaissance added more complexity than Allies, or at least more individual new concepts like the Projects and those "hot potato" cards and such. Allies felt so smooth and streamlined to me (the split piles are a little wonky though). One time we tried a game where each of us got our own Allies card, making for asymmetrical player powers. It seemed to work quite well! You might wanna try that sometime for fun. But for some reason, the kingdom cards in the Allies box reminded me of those original Dominion expansions when we first started playing many years ago. I can't really explain it; it was just a feeling I got. I wasn't expecting Allies to be anything great, and it just really surprised me how much I liked it, and how much we continue to choose it when we mix boxes together. I do agree Menagerie is quite simple, and feels about like Allies in its simplicity. After reflecting on this video, I feel like Menagerie belongs higher on the list. I reallllly like that expansion, especially the artwork, but I just don't know where I would put it! It's such a tough decision! Regarding the 2e update packs, I guess I was speaking generally about whether or not a new player would _need_ to get those, which is why I put them in my "non-essential" category. But the more I explore those update packs, the more great cards I am finding. They really oughta go back and release the 1e cards in small packs, so people can have a complete collection. I just didn't like how they made those tiny changes when they released the 2e. It seemed like a money grab. I completely agree with you about Plunder too. I've played that a lot more since making this video, and it's such a fun expansion. I lovvvvvvve the loot cards!!!!! So much fun! It reminds me of the early days of playing Prosperity. So satisfying. Anyway, I genuinely appreciate you watching my video and commenting with a somewhat different perspective. As I said in the video, my wife and I play Dominion very casually, and most of the folks we play with are also casual players. I could talk all day with someone like you! Cheers!

That's awesome! Welcome to the dizzying world of Dominion expansions! I think Prosperity is a great place to start because it gives you that extra Platinum and Colony addition, which you can add to any game of Dominion you play from here on out. I feel like I should mention: whichever base game edition you have (1st or 2nd), you should probably match that Prosperity edition so the art is the same on those Platinum and Colony cards (i.e. if you have the 2nd edition of the base game, get the 2nd edition of Prosperity). However, with Seaside, I think the first edition is the better version if you can find it. If not, the second is still cool. Happy Dominioning! Thanks for the comment!

I love that you mention favourite cards even for the expansions that you don't like (red level). I'm not a fan of Possession at all--I've banned that for my on-line play. One correction: there are 7 different heirlooms, so you could potentially replaced all of your starting coppers with a different heirloom. And I don't own all of the expansions, so I haven't played with most of the sets on a stand-alone basis (but just a random mix of cards on-line), but would the coins/coffers (same thing really, and the name has been unified in the second edition) really play that differently between Guilds and Renaissance? In either case, I wouldn't see people saving up a huge trove of them to make a massive buy, but simply using one or two as needed on each turn.
@undiscovered_games
@undiscovered_games 11 ай бұрын
You are correct on both points: Renaissance and Guilds are indeed the same in terms of being able to using coins as straight money. After making this video, I learned that later versions of Guilds actually include a coffers mat and change the wording from “take a coin” to “take a coffers,” so in essence they are identical. The biggest difference is that Renaissance has more cards that give you coffers…and those cards are more generous. Whenever I’ve played Renaissance, players save up like 10 or more coins and unleash big turns because they also have the Villagers mat. I have not experienced those big turns as much in Guilds because the action cards only give you 1 or 2 coins at a time. Plus, I think the coffers mat is slightly confusing to new players. I like the original approach of Guilds where you just take a coin as money and use it, instead of calling it a “coffers.” However, with all the different uses of coin tokens throughout Dominion, I see where the coffers mat is useful to keep coins organized according to their purpose. The tavern mat in Adventures is actually more confusing in my opinion. But I digress. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for the comment! I know, right? I don't know how they can even call some of those the same expansion. When I made the video, I didn't even realize there was _that_ much difference between the first and second printings. Then, when I went to edit the video, I realized it, and then I had to add subtitles on those parts of the video. Very frustrating! You can still find some good secondhand copies of the first editions if you look around. I would almost recommend doing that, and then buying the little mini-update packs if you want to have a complete set. I have yet to find a "must have" card in the second edition printings. However, some of my _favorite_ cards were removed from the first editions. Grr!!

This was an extremely good video and I love that it's very up-to-date since there are so many new ones! Dominion is my favorite cardgame ever. I thought I was a "hardcore" fan when I bought 11 boxes and the base cards box + almost every promo but ever since they've just made so many of them that I quit buying them. I can barely fit them to my shelf. The ones I have and I'm happy with each and every one of them: Dominion Intrigue Seaside Alchemy Prosperity Cornucopia Hinterlands Dark Ages Guilds Adventures Empires ... and after Empires I stopped buying. So I don't have these: Nocturne Renaissance Menagerie Allies Plunder

Thank you for the kind words! You have a bigger Dominion collection than most! Yes, you really can't go wrong with any combination of expansions. I think the key to Dominion is convincing people to at least try one or two of the expansions. If they only play the base game, they will likely get tired of the game. But it just gets SO good once you start mixing boxes together. I was thinking about the ones you don't have, and other than Nocturne, they're all really good. But of all those, I think Allies is the most underrated expansion in recent years. It's one of my favs. Happy Dominioning!

I just bought a used 1st edition prosperity! One of the most fun plays I’ve done is, buy as many coppers as possible and then get the counting house card (let’s you put all coppers in your discard pile into your hand) and then bank (+1 money per each treasure card.) I was able to buy 2 colony cards in one turn!! A little disappointing they took out the counting house card in the second edition

Thank you! I could go either way on Prosperity. The first edition comes with metal coins and mats, and the 2nd does not. However, the 2nd edition of Prosperity has the updated artwork on the money cards, which is very helpful. Or you can also get the updated art with the little yellow Base Cards box. I definitely prefer the FIRST edition of Seaside! They removed some of my favorite stuff in the second edition, especially Embargo!! Regardless, they are similar enough where it doesn’t affect my ranking overall. It’s just those slight differences. I would say the best option is get the first editions, then get the update packs, and then get the yellow base cards box. That way you can experience Prosperity and Seaside in all their glory! Let me know if you have any other questions and I’d be happy to answer!

Great review! I have all the dominion until adventurers because at that time the creator said it would be the last one. There goes my storage set up. Haven’t played since and recently got back into it. I got empires because it was the highest ranked on BGG but now I think maybe I’m more your style and like the simplicity and cleanness of allies. Thanks for the comment! I agree with you. It's funny... deckbuilding is one of my least favorite mechanisms because of the fiddly shuffling, but Dominion is so clean and that's what I love most about it. That's why I like the expansions that add variety without muddying up the game. And I completely agree with you about the BGG rankings. Whenever there's a game rated over a 7.5 on there, I start to suspect I won't like it. I've been disappointed by "high" BGG rankings so many times in the past! In my experience, the sweet spot on the BGG scale is 6 to 7.5 (with a couple exceptions of course). Happy New Year!

What a great video. I have been waiting for this a lot. How does you wife handle attacks and curses?:)
@undiscovered_games
@undiscovered_games Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Usually we keep the attacks to a minimum in general, never more than 50% attack cards in a setup, and usually only 2 or 3 max. The curses don't bother my wife as much because she just adjusts her strategy to trash curses from her hand, or invest in cards that allow her to draw more cards. Specifically with Dark Ages, those cards give you lots of rewards for trashing cards, so that is a good way to get rid of curses. But my wife usually does not enjoy "take that," so she usually groans when she sees a bunch of attack cards in the kingdom setup haha. The nice thing is most of the expansions have a good mix of attack & non-attack cards, so we can always choose not to use some. Like I said, if it's more than half attack cards in the setup, usually we will choose different cards. Attacks and curses are fine by me, though! When I play with other players, sometimes we go full attack mode. But that's the beauty of Dominion. You can easily modify your games to fit your gaming style!

Excellent description and breakdown of Dominion. I bought the First edition eons ago and it never got played sadly. Fast forward 10 years and now my kids are grown up and love playing this with me. I recently bought the second edition big box with the new base game and Intrigue. It’s such a great game. I enjoy seeing my daughters build their decks with interesting combos and beat me. Storage is such a beast. I’m looking at tossing the original big box so I can get something smaller and more manageable. Awesome review. I constantly see many board game enthusiasts list Dominion as their gateway and or most played game for a good reason. I really want those awesome metal tokens! Nicely done video.

1.) Adventures: Adds three amazing mechanics and on top of that just really interesting cards. Especially reserve cards are just so flexible and I really wish they will return to them soon. Also has my 2nd favourite Card Transmogrify. 2.) Renaissance: A little bit power creeped because of the cards itself, but at the same time the most interesting basic cards of all expansions. Projects are also really cool. Also has my favourite Card Silk Merchant. 3.) Dark Ages: Little bit of a disagreement regarding the theme here: It's trashing, but not to perfectly clean up your deck but rather to do something with it. Trashing for benefits with Dark Ages just adds so much depth to the game. Additionally it combines really well with Adventures and Renaissance (as do they with each other) for my personal holy trinity of expansions. 4.) Seaside: Agree with you here, just value the same arguments a bit lower. The expansion which introduced the best card type (Durations) and some of the coolest yet simple cards in the game. I especially love that no matter which combination of expansions you play, 2 cards from Seaside often improve any kingdom, it just combines so well. 5.) Cornucopia: Disclaimer: I got this with the other small expansions and the base game in a Big Box so im ranking it based on how much I like its cards on average and not deducting points for the smaller size (same for Alchemy and Guilds). Im suprised you didn't put it higher since I think the theme of interacting with differently named cards adds a lot of variation without making the game any more complicated. It's the only expansion I regularily use even in games with first time players. 6.) Allies: I really love split piles and allies, although both a bit more for the concept than the execution in this set. Nonetheless it has some of the best basic cards in the game as you also said. Also, the dark green is the best box colour. 7.) Menagerie: Tbh, all entries from 6.) to 11.) are really close for me in general. I dislike ways because I often find them a bit clunky, but as someone who loves Adventures and the reserve mat, the exile mat is a natural like. I enjoy the events here the most of all expansions and horses are fun too. For me the base cards here are sadly a bit below average, which prevents it from being higher up. 8.) Plunder: I might actually like this more, but I don't want to over-rank it just because it feels new. I really love the Loots and also Traits are cool. The Events here are second just to Menagerie. I like the focus on Duration a lot aswell, however, as with Menagerie I dont like the base cards here as much as in for example allies. 9.) Hinterland: This is actually the only expansion I dont yet own in physical form, only having played it online. I really enjoy the variety and uniqueness of cards here and would love to get in some games with my group of friends as soon as I get it. Might go down but rather up in the ranking then... 10.) Intrigue: Controversial take here, but I do like new mechanics in Dominion. For me this is the main drawback to Intrigue. Choosing is very simple and multiple types is an interesting concept but both were executed way better in later expansions (Allies especially) imo. Saving this from it's bland content compared to most expansions is the immense quality of the single cards in here tho, a lot really stand the test of time amazingly. 11.) Empires: I agree with you, that dept makes this expansion less good, not because I find it hard to keep track of, but because I just dont like the way it plays. The events here are cool, Landmarks and castles are however by far the best part of Empires. My main criticism: the expansion has so little actual cards, that it cant be played by itself, especially because I normally avoid dept cards altogether. Split piles here are also several levels below the ones of Allies (with the exception of castles). The few kingdom cards that are left are mixed, with some being very cool however (Crown especially). 12.) Prosperity: I dont agree on platinum. Colonies are amazing and give the game a great enhancement in scope, but platinum just powercreeps that away. It also doesnt make the game slower in my experience, since hitting even colonies becomes so much more easy (2 plantinums are almost always enough to get one, since you just need one more copper, that doesnt even work for a province with 2 gold). Additionally the game still ends with provinces so it legit is easier to end. This would be fine by itself but sadly platinum just makes purely money-based strategies, which is the most boring way to play dominion, just too good. That said, beyong that prosperity has decent cards, but suffers from not adding many mechanics. Unique treasures here are cool, have been done better tho (Adventures and especially Plunder) and the scoring with point tokes is a joke in comparission to what Empires offers in Events, Landmarks and base cards. That said, apart from platinums acceleration which you can just decide against there is nothing offensive to the enjoyment of the game in prosperity, just sub-par cards imo. 13.) Guilds: I really dont like overpay. Especially in combination with coffers, which allow flexible amouts of money for your buys. Tbh, I can't really say why, but it seems oddly forced to me. The cards itself are cool, but only Merchant Guild and Soothsayer really stands out. Contrary to you, I'd also say that Renaissance did coffers better, and the small difference of having a mat for them is just a quality of life improvement with no drawpacks in my opinion. 14.) Nocturne: Oh Nocturne...When I bought it, it immedieatly became my favourite expansion, just to fall down through the ranks again quickly in a very long game night with a friend of mine. The ideas it has are really great I'd argue, but it has two major problems: Complication and Centralisation. Complication since it takes legitemately 5 minutes longer to set up a game using it and centralisation in the sense that the - while interesting - mechanics make the whole game about them. You can't really combine it therefore and playing Nocturne ends up feeling like a different game rather than like an expansion. Every now and then we play with it again and it always just feels worse than a good combination of every other game. The cards itself are quite cool tho. Also it has the best artwork of all expansions imo. 15.) Alchemy: This has the same kind of centralising mechanics of Nocturne with little-to-no benefit from using them, Nocturnes ones atleast make for some interesting games in itself, potions are mostly just boring and often clunky aswell. Generally this seems like a similar list to yours with a different focus in what we value in the expansion. I only have second editions, have played with the first edition base game and seaside tho, for the base game I definetly like the 2nd more, for Seaside its pretty even for me. I didn't rank the base game however, since I think it is quite uninteressting compared to the expansions. That said, it has some really cool cards that we occasionally use similar to the ones of Seaside or Cornucopia. Highlights there is Festival and Sentry which is also my 3rd favourite card.

That's awesome! Thank you for the detailed comment! I genuinely enjoyed reading that, and although we disagree on some minor issues, you laid out a very good explanation of every expansion. I'm impressed! Upon reading all your thoughts, I'd say our biggest disagreement is with Platinum, because my wife and I both feel so strongly about using Platinums all the time. Like I said in the video, I love weighing when to buy a Province vs. when to buy a Platinum when you have 9 money to spend. But I also understand what you're saying. Other than that, as you mentioned, it boils down to what you value in an expansion. After making this video and thinking it over for the past month or so, the one expansion I feel that I ranked a bit too low was Renaissance. I don't know what I would swap it with, probably Guilds because you get so few cards in Guilds. I still think Renaissance tried to do a little too much new stuff for one box, but you're right, it has some excellent basic cards, and it uses coffers just like guilds (which I goofed when I made this video, and then explained in the description... my edition of Guilds doesn't call them coffers, and that confuses me. I think later editions changed the wording or something. So I agree with you, the Renaissance coffers mat does not change anything and is a nice addition!). It was quite challenging to truly rank all of these, especially when I have vastly different experiences based on the randomized setups. Even after making this video, I have second-guessed my list so many times. But ultimately it was for fun, and to provide a brief overview of each box. It was definitely a fun project, and I really do like your list. I would say yours is one of the most well-explained and well-organized lists I've seen around. So again, thank you for the comment. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts! Happy Dominioning!!

I want to get my brother an expansion for his birthday and after watching a few videos like this the decision is between Hinterlands and Intrigue - I want something simple but solid, without many new rules/types of cards etc., which I feel like both of these are. Does anyone have any good arguments for choosing one or the other?
@undiscovered_games
@undiscovered_games Ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment and the great question! Allow me to elaborate on those expansions, and maybe this will help sway you one way or another... You are correct in saying both of those are very simple and solid. I would say Intrigue is _most_ like the base game. It was the original Dominion expansion, and it was originally marketed as a standalone alternative to the Dominion base game. The only new concept in Intrigue is has some cards that give players a choice with certain action cards (do action A or action B). But the cards feel almost exactly like the original Dominion box, just more cards. Hinterlands is a _slightly_ more complex expansion (although it's still _very_ simple and streamlined). It adds cards that do things when you buy/gain them, which is a nice twist, but a _tad_ more complex than the new Intrigue concepts. Hinterlands also adds more variety in some new green VP cards, as well as some more ways to manage a large-deck approach (it doesn't add a lot of cards that let you thin out your deck). It sort of depends on which concept you think would suit your brother better. Whichever edition you decide on, I highly recommend _trying_ to find the First Edition (then adding the little upgrade packs later if he wants the complete set of 1st and 2nd edition cards). In both Intrigue and Hinterlands, they removed some of my favorite cards in the 2nd Edition printings! Very frustrating! I hope that helps somewhat!

Hey I’m happy to answer that! First, all the editions are interchangeable. So it doesn’t matter for being able to mix and match sets of Dominion. All of them work together. The biggest difference in the base game from First to Second Edition is the treasure & victory card artwork (coppers, silvers, provinces, etc.). See the photo where I discuss the base game at #3 on the list. The second edition cards are much better visually, and if I were new to this game, I’d probably recommend getting that just for the better artwork on those essential treasure/victory cards. You can also get the updated artwork by purchasing that little yellow box of base game cards that I showed in the video. There are a couple new cards in the second edition of the base game, and they removed a couple original cards too. It wasn’t too noticeable in the base game, but I tried to highlight that specifically in Seaside because they took out some of my favorite Seaside cards in the 2nd Edition. But for the base game of Dominion, I would say either edition is equally good. It just depends on your preference of how the money/victory cards look. Hope that helps!! I’m happy to answer any more questions too!

i don't own a copy of dominion, but I love deck building and have many other deckbuilding games. That's why base game dominion does almost nothing for me, it's like too basic. And i don't appreciate that much expansions that don't introduce other mechanism into the game. I did play a lot of dominion online for a time and if i ever bought myself a copy of dominion these are the expansions i would adquiere: 1st Menagerie: i feel like even if is not your favourite is one of the best to adquire first, it introduce new mechanism but they are relatively simple. I think Exiling is in some cases a better way of thinning your deck than trashing cards, the witch from this set is less annoying than the one frome the base game, it brings new events which is always cool, I also like "the ways" because it make your cards more versatile... and it's all about animals 2nd Empires: i feel like your lying about the debts, is not that complicated, the tokens are there to remind you , also , you can get to powerful cards early in the game, the tradeoff is that you get debt, which can make a tough meaninful decision in the game. Also, new events, landmarks that can really change the game, victory tokens are great, every mechanism that this expansion introduce is great. It's just dominion taken to a next level. I wouldn't recomend it as first expansion to adquire tho. Adventures , I just love cards that transform themselves. There are some transformation cards in Marvel Legendary in the World War Hulk set, and also in Ascension there was a expansion with transformations. It's a shame that is just 2 piles in adventures that use the mechanism, I wish there were more. But the tavern thing i think it works very well, for example, rat catcher is a good way to get rid of curses since you don't have to have it in the same hand with the cards you want to catch, so is less luck based. And then again, events are always cool. Renaissance : is cool for the same reasons you said in the video. And finally Nocturne, I love it, is weird, i don't get the hate. Night cards is just "at the end of your turn do this...", is not that complicated. Also i like that night effects don't depend on how many actions you got on your turn. Counting actions available is a true pain in the neck, night cards are more simple than that. Also i like the spooky theme, nocturne is Dominion halloween edition. Also, is not a lot, but there are a couple of transforming cards in this set. A vampire that transform into a bat. There's also a werewolf, it's weird it doesn't transform. I should have this at some point, it's like an expansion made for me. Prosperity is ok, i like the tokens but at the end is just more of the same, I wouldn't say it's essential. Also seaside is ok, but i don't love it as much as everybody else.

Haha for someone who doesn't own Dominion, you sure have a lot of strong opinions about it LOL! I say that respectfully, but I disagree about Empires and Nocturne. It could be from playing in real life vs. playing online? I have played Empires many many times, and we always forget to pay our debts first. What would I have to gain from "lying" about that in the video? LOL! I've played many games using Nocturne and Empires, and they are definitely not for me. Maybe if I played the game online, I would feel differently? In my real-life experience, they are wonky. I also disagree on Prosperity. I absolutely think Dominion improves with the addition of Platinum & Colony. No one will convince me otherwise. We only play Dominion with Platinum & Colony now. Always! I think it extends the game & complicates your decisions in a good way. Plus the Prosperity cards are so fun. King's Court is amazing! I do agree that Menagerie would be a good first expansion. It doesn't do TOO much new stuff but expands it slightly. It's worth noting that Seaside has the Island, which lets you send cards to the island in a similar way as the exile mats. The Way cards are definitely the best part though. I think it boils down to what you want in an expansion. For me, I WANT more of the same. I want more simple cards like the base game & the older expansions. Maybe throw in a slight new concept like the "way" cards or something simple. But personally, I don't want a new phase like Night, new form of currency like Potions or Debt, or anything that mucks up the smooth flow of the game. Again, this might be completely different playing online vs. in person. Deck building is fiddly in real life, which is why I don't play a lot of deck builders. I like how simple and smooth Dominion is. Finally, I will say it's hard to rank these individually because when you mix & match expansions, sometimes you find really fun combos of Kingdom cards that work really well together, and they're both from expansions I don't like. So I just tried to rank all these from my personal experience playing the game in physical form (not online). You are free to disagree with my ranking, and I appreciate your comment! Thanks for watching.

@@undiscovered_games i'm sorry, maybe lying is a strong word, but i feel like is a little disingenuous statement. I have played in person, i'm just saying that most of my games comes from online. One part about dominion that is not smooth is keeping track of the actions, in online that just automatic, but in physical form is not, the action system is the one part that almost all the dominion succesors get rid of. Is weird to me that somebody who is ok with the basic bookkeeping that you have to do in dominion thinks that the debt is harder to keep track of. The rule is really simple, if you have a debt token, whenever you would produce money, you get rid of the debt instead. And is only a couple of piles that use them, also the cards that you can pay with debst also can be paid right away if you have the money. To me It just feels like misrepresenting the expansion to say that debt ruin it.

@@undiscovered_games also, I know, you are not alone with your opinion about Nocturne. I remember the Tom vassel review of it also say very similar things about it, also to Tom he doesn't like that the cards have dependency in another deck of cards (the boon an hexes). But i think, whenever a game use the word "phase" to describe the turn structure, people believe it to be more complicated that it really is. Night is just "at the end of your turn " effects. I think it's great to have some cards that don't depend of the action system, that alone make this expansion worth trying, I wish there would be more expansions with a similar thing. Maybe don't make it so is in "another phase", cards that you can play on the action phase regardless of how many actions you have left (?) Duration cards are beloved and most of them do an extra thing at the start of your next turn that doesn't consume actions... It’s all good! I like talking about this stuff too! 😊 Sorry I did not reply again. I did not get a KZbin notification that you replied, so I was not ignoring you. I understand what you are saying about Nocturne with duration cards & the night phase. I never really thought of it that way. I guess my first thought would be, why not just use more duration cards? But it’s a fair point. It’s not a hard concept for a Dominion player to learn that Night phase, but I would never try to explain that to a new player. I sincerely appreciate all your comments. I am certainly not trying to misrepresent Empires. I do think it’s an expansion worth considering, which is why I put it in my “yellow” section. Again, it’s hard to rank them individually because I like certain things about all the expansions. I still don’t like the debt idea. It’s just one of those things where my wife and I always forget we have to pay the debt back first. And I don’t like trying to “undo” turns because we got a rule wrong. I agree it’s not a hard concept, just easily forgotten in my experience. So that’s why I put it lower on my list. It doesn’t mean I hate the expansion. It just has less stuff I like than the others. Ultimately I own every expansion for a reason. I like them all. I just wanted to rank them for fun, and maybe help some people who can’t decide.

Yeah, unfortunately I always bought the first editions back when they came out, and then I upgraded with the little mini update packs. So this was the only way I could fairly rank & review them. My best advice would be to seek out the first editions if possible, and then buy the little update packs. That way you have every card. Honestly, the only one I noticed a huge difference on was Seaside, as I mentioned in the video & description. The rest of them I would rank the same. Thanks for watching!

I'm a bit sat cornucopia didn't have a big enough impact. Not only does it have 4 of my favourite cards, it blends so well into every other expansion, especially the ones with multi-card piles. Hamlet, Menagerie, Farming Villiage, Hunting Party, and Fairgrounds have all made games much more interesting for me.
@undiscovered_games
@undiscovered_games 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I really like the Hamlet and the Hunting Party cards too! Hamlet is such a great card to snag early in the game. It's probably one of the best cards that you can buy for $2 in all of Dominion. If I would've bought the newer combined edition (where Cornucopia is lumped in with Guilds), I would've ranked it higher. As a standalone expansion, I didn't feel like there was enough in the box, so it was hard for me to justify a higher ranking. Had I known you can now buy Cornucopia and Guilds together as a single box, I would've probably had a different opinion. I bought these smaller expansions individually a lonnnnng time ago, and Cornucopia/Guilds/Alchemy always kinda disappointed me because there weren't enough new cards in the box. You're making me want to revisit Cornucopia on my next game, though! :) :)

Ok so do you prefer the first or second edition of prosperity? I’m looking to get it but I want the good one
@undiscovered_games
@undiscovered_games 11 ай бұрын
In short, I would say get whatever version matches your base game (if you have 2nd edition of the base game, get 2nd edition of prosperity). Because regarding just the kingdom cards, I would say either version is good. But they did make some other changes to consider: first edition comes with the metal coins and the player mats, but you have the old treasure/victory card artwork. Second edition doesn’t have the coins or the mats, but comes with the updated treasure/victory card artwork. You could always get the first edition & then get the mini-update-pack to get all the Kingdom cards. However, the mini-update-pack does NOT include the second edition treasure/victory cards. But the little yellow Base Cards box does. So if you want to experience ALL of prosperity, you would need to buy the first edition and then find the mini-update pack AND the base cards. If you don’t want to get all that stuff, I’d recommend just getting whichever edition matches your base game. I hope that helps! With Seaside: I’d definitely say get the first edition and then the update pack. With Prosperity: I think you’ll be ok no matter which edition you choose. Hope that helps! Thanks for the comment!

Can’t figure out how to play Ways profitably , any examples out there?
@undiscovered_games
@undiscovered_games 2 ай бұрын
Obviously it depends on the cards you have in the game, but I don't view the Way cards as a profitable card (necessarily). I see them more as an escape route (a "way" out) for a plan that isn't working out with your action cards. The Way cards just offer a more tactical approach to the game, like if the cards you bought are not panning out the way you intended. Usually I use Way cards when I was hoping for a cool synergy between 2 action cards, and I just can't get those 2 cards to come up together in my hand. I can abandon that plan and use a Way card to perhaps draw more cards, or to give me more actions, instead of taking the action on the card I play. It just increases your options. However, if you want to look at them profitably, one example I've used is the Way of the Goat, which lets you trash a card from your hand. In the game I recall, we had NO other way to trash cards, so players were buying the cheapest action cards just to use them with the Way of the Goat in order to trash some starting coppers & estates to thin out their decks. So it seems to me whenever you have some cheap $2-$3 action cards in the kingdom setup, you could try to invest in a bunch of those, and then use the Way actions instead, as you might find them more valuable than the action card itself. Again, it all depends on the mix of cards that are in play, and the timing of how the cards come up in your hand. It's just nice to have the Way card as an alternative to all your action cards. Plus when you mix and match a bunch of expansions, it just depends on the mix of cards you have. I hope that helps somewhat. Maybe someone else can chime in here with another example? Thanks for the comment!

Ok that was super helpful but I asked my question wrong - I am a couple steps behind. I literally just don’t even understand yet the mechanics of HOW to use Ways in the app. Is it that you pay for a Way once , and then get unlimited use thereafter ?
@undiscovered_games
@undiscovered_games 2 ай бұрын
Way cards are available to any player for the entire game. You don't buy them, they just get placed out at the start of the game. We usually play with 2 Way cards in play. For the entire game, ANY time you play an action card, you can INSTEAD use the action on the WAY card. So you play your action card, ignore its action, and do the action on the Way card. Does that answer your question? @@arielbenjamin3253

Nocturne is one of my favorite expansions, probably second besides plunder. Heirlooms are great because you normally trash copper anyway, I like most of the night cards especially ghost town and devil's workshop. The night phase can be confusing for new players, but it's the simplest phase once you understand it. There's also so many good cards like ghost, necromancer, conclave, cursed/blessed village. Boons and hexes can be a bit underpowered though, in particular bard is one of the worst cards in the game I'd also like to shout out prosperity as the worst expansion, the platinum and colony are both way too good and just make the game uninteresting and snowball-y. A larger victory card than province would be good with expansions like plunder that tend to elevate the money level, but colony is too much considering an equal density to province would already be better

Thanks for the comment! It sounds like we are completely opposite Dominion player types. Nothing wrong with that! You're not the first one to disagree on Nocturne. I just feel like Nocturne doesn't fit the medieval vibe of Dominion, and vampire stuff isn't for me. But mechanically it's a fine expansion, just not my fav. I do like the heirlooms a lot. You might have played Dominion more than me, or you might be a more serious Dominion player than me. For me, as a casual Dominion player, I completely disagree on Prosperity. I will never play a game without Colony and Platinum, and my Dominion game group agrees. Again, different strokes for different folks! Thanks again for watching! :)

I also recently shared my favorite expansions on KZbin. Top 10. 1. Menagerie 2. Dark ages 3. Hinterlands 4. Plunder 5. Adventures 6. Cornucopia 7. Alchemy 8. Allies 9. Empires 10. Seaside 11. Renaissance 12. Intrigue 13. Nocturne 14. Guilds 15. Prosperity For me prosperity has always been my most hated expansion, I’m not a fan of colony and platinum, I also hate several of the action and treasure cards in this expansion. Then of course the second edition removed my favorite card from the set. Goons! And of course my most hated card stayed mint. (Summon isn’t in menagerie)

Thanks for sharing, and that’s very cool! I checked out the video. I see you also like the Embargo card. I can’t believe they took that out. And I find it very interesting you don’t like Prosperity! You might be the first player I’ve ever met who doesn’t like that one. For us, we play a lot at 2p, and the games often seem to end too quickly. We like how Platinum & Colony let you build your deck a little longer and add that extra decision of whether to buy a platinum or province with 9 money. I think your top 5 is excellent! When I first played Menagerie, I said it might be my favorite expansion ever. I think the “way” cards are an excellent addition. For some reason, though, the kingdom cards just didn’t stand out to me as much after we played it more. But it’s still great! It is very hard to rank these individually because every time you mix different sets, it can greatly impact the game. Happy to meet a fellow Dominioner and I just subscribed to your channel. Haha I hope I wasn't too harsh on it! Sorry! You're not the first to comment about Nocturne. Unfortunately when comparing it to the others, it was low on my list. However, I do like the heirloom idea a lot. I would love to see that idea again in a future expansion! And I still own Nocturne, so it's not TOO bad. In my life, I introduce a lot of games to people who are fairly new to the hobby, or people who just haven't played a ton of these types of games. For whatever reason, I have had a really hard time explaining the night phase of Nocturne to them. And of course the theming is just a personal taste. I'm definitely into more of the medieval/renaissance theming overall in gaming. If you check out my top ten games of all time video, it'll probably make more sense. ;) I'm just not into zombies, vampires, sci fi, or space themes. But I totally understand loving Nocturne if that's your jam!! Thanks for the comment :)

@undiscovered_games

In theory I would agree, and I usually do buy the platinum. But I also usually lose at Dominion. It really just depends on your opponents. What if another player (aka my wife) buys a bunch of Provinces to rush the game end? Having the choice of Platinum vs. Province forces you to watch what other players are doing and decide whether to play the long game or to get in on the Provinces before the game ends. That's why I consider it a tough decision.
