Yes, sadly it's out of print. Check eBay or the GeekMarket on Board Game Geek. I don't know if you'll be able to find a new copy, but there are a few used copies floating around out there. Keep your eyes open! The Pegasus Spiele edition is better than the Quined Games edition (Quined uses symbols, Pegasus uses text).

This game is all right...first game you've done that I don't really just love in fact. I use to own it but moved it as after you play it some number of times it does feel like you've pretty much fleshed out what this game does. It's not bad in any way, just also didn't have staying power for me personally.

Thanks for the comment! Hey, 1 out of 42 episodes that you don't love... I'll take it! ;) To elaborate on your comment, I'm curious if you like Puerto Rico and your thoughts comparing it to Constantinopolis? What I find most interesting here is the turn order track & bidding for those special abilities. To me, that solves the main problem I have with Puerto Rico, which is how the clockwise turn order dictates the special actions available to you, and how that can really determine some important outcomes in that game. Here, it's how badly you want a certain ability, how much you're willing to pay for it, and also the turn order not being clockwise. I also like how Constantinopolis deals with resource production & conversion (it feels more streamlined than Puerto Rico, which has lots of text on the tiles & such). I could definitely see what you say about it reaching a threshold where you feel like you've seen all the game has to offer. So far we have played about 10-11 games of Constantinopolis so far and I feel like it has lots of plays left. I'm still discovering some reactionary/tactical plays based on what my opponents do, some other pathways to victory I haven't discovered yet. But again, I can definitely forsee a time in the future where I've played this game enough... not quite there yet! Thanks again for watching & commenting! I appreciate it!

@@undiscovered_games Yeah I agree this game does fix turn order problem and overall this game is a fine set of mechanics sitting on a solid chassis of a game. What i believe to be the problem is the game landed in the laps of Fantasy Flight Games. Not a bad game publisher at all, but let's face it Euro games just are not their forte. In my experience their attempts at Euros show them give up on a game too quickly. My feeling is this game had some more chrome to it from the get go (the kinds of things that would extend the playability ofthe game) and they probably culled some of that out thinking (like FFG does) that ship the expansion when successful. Yet when the game isn't an instant success (as they aren't really known for Euros) they just give up on it. Exodus Fleet is another game that excellently fixes the Puerto Rico issues and I love that game.

The rules are a little unclear on some things so this video really helped, thanks! We had a situation come up in our game where (likey due to a poor decision) the color that scored for a player (the fate color) was the same color as the color of their leader (which was deployed during the battle). In a case like this, it was unclear if the value of the leader was added to the score of the troops of that color & then scored again because the leader was deployed? IOW, does the leader count twice in cases where the scoring color matches the color of the leader? Anyway, thanks again for highlighting this game (and other undiscovered gems) on your channel!
@undiscovered_games
@undiscovered_games 7 күн бұрын
That's a great question! I've never considered counting the hero twice in that situation, and here's why: The way the rules are written, it talks about "valid colors." You only count the values of army cards in your valid colors. Also, it says the hero card, once deployed, counts as a "standard army card." Therefore, the way I read that, you would either count your army cards in 1 valid color (fate + hero are the same color) or 2 valid colors (fate + hero are different colors). I don't think you would double up your hero (because it counts as a standard army card once you deploy it). After reading your comment, though, I can definitely see an argument for counting the hero twice. However, my gut feeling is you do not. Hope that helps!! Thanks for the great comment!

Great video. And I'm totally with you on how appealing this game looks. However it's a little off-putting that Colovini clearly played Knizia's Imperium in his Neue Spiele im alten Rom (1992) set and thought about how he could develop that 10 minute cracker into a real game. Knizia's later iteration is King's Road, and it would be a lot of fun to compare development against Doge by playing both (all three??) on the same evening... if one were into that sort of thing. Neue Spiele im alten Rom is certainly something that you should also look into. It's also got the precursor to Medici in it. I'm really enjoying these videos and your taste is excellent. Another excellent presentation of a totally unknown to me game. I would definitely be searching this one out if I already didn't have the game Ys. This has some interesting similarities with Ys in the "almost" blind bidding. Here you bid half of your tokens hidden and the other half revealed during a round. This is where I got the idea for the Stonehenge variant I offered on your last video. The extra that Ys has is set collection in the form of gems and commodity speculation of those gems. And, some variable player powers gained along the way. Another big similarity is the amount of time and minutiae around breaking ties. 😅 All in all it's an excellent game. If you are interested in Ys, check out the Chairman of the Board's KZbin review. He does an great job of explaining the game.

Can't wait to check it out!!

That’s awesome you’ve played Aladdin’s Dragons. That’s a fun undiscovered game too, but I definitely like Doge better for blind bidding with fixed tokens. Aladdin’s Dragons feels like I’m reacting to the game more than my opponents (like 70% game and 30% opponents). It’s more about the resources, cards, & tiles that come out & how heavy I want to bid on certain spots. Doge feels like I’m reacting to my opponents more than game (like 70% opponents and 30% game). The only thing the game itself does is providing the order of scoring. The rest is entirely up to the players, which feels much deeper & crunchier & more interactive. Thanks for watching! Let me know how you like Doge!

How's your opinion about when harvesting, you harvest also the other players' fields? Thematic this seems to not make sense that you'll get cubes from spaces that are not your own.
@undiscovered_games
@undiscovered_games 26 күн бұрын
It's one of my favorite mechanisms and decisions in the game! I typically love anything that makes a game more interactive, and that does it. I can see what you mean about the theme, but the way I see it, you're harvesting their field for them, so you're doing the work (and they get paid with a victory point). I love deciding whether to help my opponents or not. Another note regarding theme: Personally, I have never been a theme-forward gamer (meaning I don't really care if the mechanisms make sense thematically). I just want an interesting puzzle with fun mechanisms. I also want a neat setting with great artwork, which this game has. But it's still a euro game through and through, so naturally you won't find this to be a hugely thematic experience, and that's my favorite type of game: fun mechanisms with a light sprinkle of theme. Thanks for the comment!

Great tutorial. Played it recently for the first time. It’s quite neat, although I’d wish the boat movement to be a bit more meaningful. Small rules question: My understanding from the rulebook is that the harbour tiles are deactivated next time you move (regardless whether you pick up another tile or not). It’s a small but important difference, especially in the late game, when not many harbours have tiles left.
@undiscovered_games
@undiscovered_games 28 күн бұрын
Whoa, that's crazy! That is worded horribly in the rulebook, but I think you are correct. It says if you land on an empty harbor, you no longer have an active harbor tile. That changes the whole strategy of moving, and wow... I don't think I like that rule. I've always liked deciding whether or not I want to end my movement on an empty space so I could keep a certain harbor tile active. I can't imagine it would change the outcome of the game drastically, but it certainly changes the strategy of moving. Thanks for pointing that out, and I will add this to the rules clarifications of the video.

Love these old Knizia abstracts. I've never heard of this, am giving it a whirl on paper.... thanks for the suggestion! It looks like a common strategy would be to place as many of your high value discs in the center, since they'll score you the most line opportunities. To add a bluffing element, you could hide all your discs behind a screen, then on each turn players put out 2 discs....one face up and one face down. Then all discs are revealed at the end of the game line by line placing the blocks. Tied lines go to the player with fewer discs first, if still tied, goes to the player with a disc closest to the scoring space.
@undiscovered_games
@undiscovered_games 29 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the great variant idea! The rulebook has a variant to play with all face down disks and then reveal them at the end, but I like your idea of 1 up and 1 down. It definitely seems like it could work!! Playing the game on paper definitely isn’t quite the same as these awesome wooden pieces, but it definitely can give you a good idea of some strategies to try out. I’ve seen this play out very differently every time I’ve played. I’ve tried to figure out where the best place is to place my higher numbers. You’d think in the center would be ideal, but those larger rows are harder to dominate because they require more disks. Often times I end up placing my larger numbers in the shorter rows when my opponent has used all their large numbers because it guarantees me a row with 1 placement. It’s much trickier than it seems at first. I love trying to control multiple rows with one placement, especially before the rows are full. It’s quite satisfying to pull off those types of moves! I’m going to try your variant idea next time I play. It sounds fun!!!

Oh yeah, not for family game night 😂😂 I think those wagons are the single chunkiest game component in my collection. The cathedral pieces from Krieg Und Frieden are a close match, but these take the cake!

I realllllly enjoyed watching this episode! The way you talked through all your feelings really helped put me right there at the table with you. I totally got all the ups and downs you were talking about. All things considered I think my game group might actually like this one. We like Container quite a bit and we play other econ games. We also like some cube rails and I personally love a mean interactive game! Fascinating episode! Can’t believe I missed this game!

That is awesome! I am thrilled so many people felt the emotional ride this game took me on just from watching this episode. I would say if your group plays Container and cube rails games, they would like this game just fine!! Thanks for the comment!!

Wow, this was an incredible review of a game I knew nothing about. I feel like I had gone on that ride of highs and lows with you just from your video. Not being a big fan of pick up and deliver, I was finding myself growing more and more interested in it as you explained the game play, then dropped down as you explained why it has a love/hate relationship for you. This seems ripe for a more modernized new edition. It definitely has some of that borrowed mechanic from previous games vibe, like the wheels from El Grande, but also the auction system from the Princes of Florence for the red cards...except one player gets nothing in this game. I had seen it listed on Amazon not too long ago from a 3rd party seller, but quite pricey. One thing I have to say is, I've been recently liking games that have a strict procedural round system like this one. After playing Hadara, Constantinopolis and Pillars of the Earth, I find these systems great for getting into the games quickly and making them easier to to teach. Can't wait to see the next game you have in store for us!

Thanks for the thoughtful comment! I'm glad that my roller coaster of emotions came through in the video, because that's exactly how I feel playing this game. I, too, have never been _too_ into pickup & deliver games (with the exception of Age of Steam), but I do find this one fascinating in it's own way. I completely agree with you about the procedural round structure. It does make the game way easier to teach, and to remember all the rules! I didn't even think about it, but yeah, Constantinopolis was my last video, and then this one (very similar idea with those turn structure charts & going through the step-by-step). Good call on Hadara! That is a great game I used to own but ended up trading it for some reason. You're making me want to play that one again now haha.

That's awesome! So happy I could provide some motivation to get it played. I've been there so many times. A game will sit on my shelf, and then a video will come out and suddenly I am motivated to get it to the table. Very cool!! I hope you all enjoy it (and hopefully no one punches each other 😂😂).

Thank you for the excellent analysis and critique of this old gem. I recently bought a pristine copy of this game on the BGG market for $15 based solely on its design pedigree, and because I love interactive economic games, and now I feel fully redeemed in that decision. I’ll make sure to share this with my gaming group when I introduce it to them, and this just makes me want to play it even more!

Fantastic presentation of an awesome game!!🔥🔥You capture the essence of the game perfectly. I find the charm of these old games is in the imperfections (i.e. just because every play is not awesome doesn't mean it's a bad game). A lot of old Wallace games are like that and I love them. Keep up the great work!!!

LOL! Well look at the bright side... if you think this channel is bad for a wallet, try being the one discovering them. I figure I purchase approx 10-20 games for every 1 discovery that's worth featuring 🫣😭 I hear ya though... this hobby is such a rabbit hole!! My goal is to hopefully weed out the bad games and focus on the good ones here, and hopefully that helps people make informed purchases. I really hope you enjoy the game! Yes, it is _highly_ group dependent and it's great to know your game group!! I think it would be perfect to play this with a group of players who thoroughly understood the game _but_ could also play without overthinking it or taking it too seriously. That's a hard balance to strike, but it would help speed up the pace a little. With our group, 3 out of 4 of us are prone to AP, so the game really dragged for us most of the time. Still, I can recognize that it would be a _ton_ of fun with the right group. I hope you get to try it sometime! It's worth at least one play even if you hate it 🤣🤣

I love auctions and player interaction so this vid will help me finally get this game to the table. Stefen Dorras Intrigue was recently suggested to me and that game rocks! It's also a backstabby negotiation game but much simpler and shorter. Super excited for your top 50 list! I would bet 10 or more of them would overlap my top 50.

Thanks for watching as always! This game is awesome if you like auctions. I really do like it overall, but each play can be hit or miss. Just give it another chance if you happen to get a miss on your first play. It's just a slog sometimes with all the negotiations, and if players have bad AP. Most importantly, do *not* get behind early! I really want to play Intrigue. It's been on my list for a lonnnng time!!
