They do explain what happened to Zuko's mother during the eclipse when Zuko confronts Ozai. They couldn't explain it in Zuko Alone because all the flashbacks were from his perspective and he didn't know what happened?

They don't clarify it. Ozai says "Your mother did treacherous, unforgivable things that night." Which does not mean that she personally killed the firelord. I'd say coming up with the plan to have Ozai kill the firelord and have her be banished in place of killing Zuko is enough to warrant treachery.

@@scottysock5593 Well, even as a kid I understood what he meant. They generally don't say kill unless it's absolutely necessary. It's not too difficult to assume that Ozai had her kill the FireLord so that he could take power and then he punished her because she knew of the treason.

The first time I watched I thought she came up with the plot and Ozai killed him, we know Ozai is capable of the cruelty and violence to do that, not to mention he wanted the throne for himself and was willing to betray Iroh to get it.

If there was an episode that Roger wanted criticize for not expanding on Ursa, it would be the eclipse episode. I remember as a kid thinking that when Zuko cried Ozai was gonna pull a Palpatine and tell Zuko exactly what happened so that Zuko would not run away. It also would have made Zuko's decision that more impactful, because now he wants to join the Avatar to find his mom.

I’ve cried many times at anime and animated movies, but “The Tales of Ba Sing Se” was the only time I remember when a western cartoon made me cry. There were times I came close, like the Bunny episode of The Powerpuff Girls and the “Gary Come Home” song from SpongeBob, but that Iroh moment completely broke me. “The Tales of Ba Sing Se” is my favorite episode of Avatar.

I’ve watched avatar like 3 or 4 times. Tales of Ba Sing Se always makes me cry. Along with Zuko reuniting with Iroh. Both characters are my favorite of the series. They entire arc and past it’s so touching and greatly done.

The play will always be S tier for me, bc I feel like a ton of the love of avatar comes after it's run, but I was there for it's nickelodeon viewing. After the day of black sun avatar didn't have another episode for almost 2 years and it came back during the Summer of 2008 with a week of avatar. Each day was a new episode starting with the one where Zuko joins the group all the way to the last day where the almost 2 hour finale aired at once, and getting that parody/recap of the show really mattered in the moment

The play was a really good episode. You have to understand that it’s a “recap” episode and instead of giving you copy and pasted scenes to give a filler refresher like everyone else does, the episode provided a fresh, unique, and funny take on everything that had happened previously, not many of anyone at all does that. It was masterful in execution: Enough to remind the viewers but also unique enough and entertaining to watch independently. Where as most recap ep. can be considered filler, this isn’t one of them

Nightmares and Daydreams is above The Storm, The Chase, Bitter Work, The Guru, and Zuko Alone. That's crazy to me. Nightmares and Daydreams and The Great Divide are the only episodes I skip on re-watch. Still cool to see Roger's list after a first watch.

Really glad you liked The Ember Island Players! That episode is a work of genius. Not only does it serve as the series recap right before the finale, but it's also the writers' taking the show's criticisms and showing that they're able to laugh at themselves. Overly trope-ing the characters, skipping the Great Divide like the watchers tend to, highlighting the weird tightrope Katara and Aang's relationship walks between romantic and platonic. All fantastic. Good Zuko development too, having to watch and relive his past mistakes. Brilliant episode all around

I think the Ember Island episode is S tier. Sure it was a recap of the series but it was a time where the characters and even writers could be self aware of the show and the flaws it had. And then also sort of making Aang insecure about his relationship with Katara and with then being unsure of how they’ll win the war. And also just the amount of laughs with the “avatar state yip yip” and the simplistic delivery of the lines.

avatar is one of those shows where i can confidently say i really like and that i can easily recommend to others if ever they want to watch something. it's such a classic, where actual care was put into the stories and characters, where the design, music, and animation all look good. the writing is good, where funny and tear-bending moments will always hit. one thing i really appreciate in this show is how they really take proper care in the bending aspect. each nations and elements have their distinct bending styles, taken inspiration from real world martial arts. and the fact that the choreos they make are actually creative and not just hit with element and repeat makes all the fight scenes so enjoyable to watch.

Sozin’s Comet Part 4 was put in S in part because of the final agni kai, except it was actually in Sozin’s Comet Part 3.

Great tierlist, think it's 80% of where my sentiments abt the show is and I've watched it more than 3 times. It's really impressive that you're quite spot on for this but hope you dont mind me sharing some takes: Sozin's comet part 3 is actually where the major fights happened/started - the last agni kai & the Ozai vs Aang and it absolutely has to be S tier because you see Zuko actually having a way better form than Azula until her cheapshot at katara cliffhanger and Aang facing his destiny of standing up to Ozai. Amber island play is the epitome of filler recap episode of every single show i've ever watched of summarizing the show right before the major actions in a fresh and interesting way, definitely low S tier for me. Sokka's master deserves A tier for the sword fight vs master piandao which was really way done and Sokka's well deserved powerup. The Earth King is when the team really showed how good they are as a team going straight past the palace guards to meet the earth king all the way in the throne room which to me deserves a low A. The avatar state has to be Zhao tier for another trashy general who did such despicable things to Aang to force his avatar state, totally unnecessary episode other than giving aang anxiety on the avatar state. Nice to know you enjoyed the show and bringing this up!

The Avatar state introduces us to Azula, gives us Iroh redirecting her lightning, explains what the avatar state is and tells us if you die while in it the cycle is broken which raises the stakes, and gives us a commentary on the harsh realities of war vs the innocence of Aang which is a theme of the whole show. In addition it makes you think about would you use a super weapon to save soldier lives. Also I like that you see an example of someone on the "good guy" side that is not good, the show has a bunch of examples of these and it just makes the story telling more deep and so realistic.

You have a pretty unpopular opinion on Zuko Alone. I actually think they were planning a Zuko spin-off show for that. Only it ended up being a comic. But I GUARANTEE you, the comic (named The Search) is one of the only SOLID post-ATLA content out there. Zuko Alone is perfect as is.

I respect your opinion about Zuko Alone. I've always been a fan of unpopular opinions (as long as they're actual opinions, i.e. pizza toppings, music, tv, etc). Personally, though, I feel it wouldn't have made much sense to fully delve into Ursa's backstory in the episode because Zuko Alone is told from Zuko's perspective; he didn't have that knowledge. They originally planned to turn The Search (comic) into a tv movie following the series but, the network didn't like the idea and greenlit - I'm not kidding - the live-action Last Airbender movie instead. Isn't life a bitch?!

I think The Great Divide is overhated way too much and is a bit better than a few episodes... I enjoy it more than The Nothern Air Temple or Avatar Day or even The Drill in my opinion as a long time Avatar fan! Boiling Rock is probably my favorite of all :]

Am I the only one confused by sozins comet part 3 not being S tier. Because isn’t sozins comet the one that has the full zuko and axils fight and aang vs ozai with aang redirecting lighting. And ending off with zuko talking Azulas lighting aang inside the rock right before he get hit into the avatar state. I definitely think part 3 should’ve been S tier.

Biggest one that stands out to me is how you had Sozin's Comet Part 3 in A Tier. That to me is the best episode in the show and ranking it outside top 3 seems insulting but ranking it outside of S Tier is even worse. I think you got the moments of Sozin's Comet Part 3 mixed into you're opinion of Part 4. The Azula vs Zuko fight is Part 3. The best part of the Aang vs Firelord Ozai fight is in Part 3. The best part of the Air siege attack by Sokka, Toph, & Suki is in Part 3. I'm hoping you just got the 2 episodes mixed up and don't actually have this opinion of the episodes cause you'd be way off consensus opinion of the show.
