True we’re now at the Golden era of fighting game. For people that a fans of anime fighting game there is Granblue fantasy versus rising and the upcoming undernight 2 also with the recent update of DBFZ rollback and Guilty gear Strive that can be considered as the best anime fighting game that still going strong and might be last till season 4 or 5 made it the best time to jump into fighting game genre if you never touch it before.

MK1 is better in terms of fighting game mechanics than 11 but that's the only thing that's improved. Everything surrounding the gameplay (online features, offline content, bugs, scummy monetization) is worse. For a series that used to be the gold standard for what fighting games brought to the table it doesn't even hit the bare minimum anymore. Most of these issues are probably caused by WB rather than NRS themselves but its a shame that MK has to suffer due to the bad decisions made by its publisher.

I picked up King of Fighters XV last week and I honestly think this is one of the best fighters ever made, I love it. It's a shame it took them a long time to fix the matchmaking. But as of now it's just so solid. Huge awesome roster, fun characters, fun combo system, some strategy with team building. Rollback netcode, crossplay with all platforms, and $15 on sale for the base game. Also a small note to your section about the 2020 picks. You showed some love to under-night which is awesome, but under-night [cl-r] was also a rerelease/updated version just like MK11 ultimate and Street Fighter V CE. I think the original under-night was from around 2013? So yeah, it was a year without many "new" releases except for granblue.

The only thing that held back KoF XV is their online server. I don’t know how it’s now after the cross play update but before that it’s so hard to find a match and it’s discouraged people to get into this game because it might be dead on their server

@@AtlasPUPGT not the worst opinion, mk 11 is absolute shit. Majority of the combo and damage potential was tied directly to krushing blows. Charcters that were top tier in this game were characters that didnt have to rely on combos in their game plan (Jade, Cetrion, Fujin, Robocop). MK 11 is the only modern fighting game that allows someone who gets punished for their mistakes to get out of jail by using a breakaway. Further, if you time your breakaway correctly, you can even catch your opponent mid combo and *punish them for punishing you in the first place.* A perfect example to showcase this is to watch to watch the evo 2023 grand finals, its fujin v fujin and the game plan is literally: try to set up throw krushing blow, forward 2 2 pressure, launch opponent to force breakaway. Fucking boring, theres a reason mk 11 had the least entrants out of all main games at evo 2023

Interesting, the art style of SFV grew on me. I didn't like it at first but I eventually got used to it (outside of the feet). The art is better to me than SFIV though by a mile. It's funny you bring up UNIST because Under Birth originally was released earlier and UNIST was technically an updated version yet you didn't question it as much as Mortal Kombat. I honestly love UNIST and I hope I have enough time to actually be effective with Enkidu when Sys Celeste releases.

I don't know what can top Tekken 8 for 2024. I used to be against Tekken, could never get into it, and then 8 showed up and now for the very first time I'm actually into Tekken. And I can't believe it after SF6, blew me away. But T8 is better to me in every single metric I can think of, I'm amazed at the 180 it made me do on this franchise. T8 is my fav fighting game of all time now along with FighterZ. I can't imagine other games beating it even in the coming years.

Honestly the topic of Multiversus is very interesting to me. I feel that it did not deserve the GOTY over KOF XV. BUT it could have been deserved if the game was actually finished. The gameplay itself was really smooth and more inclusive than KOF so yeah i get why it won but honestly looking back. MV was a quality cash grab that defo feels like a scam after the shut down.

I will defend Smash for 3DS as being the superior version of Smash 4 as a game, and that it was hugely limited by its platform. In terms of the modes it beats Smash for Wii U almost across the board. The Mario Party mode is replaced by Smash Run which is an odd concept, being a semi-open world beatemup where you level up individual stats culminating in a final challenge where you compete directly with the other players, but it works surprisingly well and probably would've been a ton of fun on a home console with a ton of players. Classic mode while it isn't great on 3DS is way better than it is on Wii U. And here's my hot take, 8 player smash isn't a huge loss because on most stages you can barely keep track of anything happening on screen and is more annoying than anything. The biggest problem with Smash 3DS was that it was on the 3DS, and if its modes (namely Smash Run) weren't limited by the hardware, I think some of its more unique aspects would become series staples.

Smash Ultimate is definitely one of my favorite games of all time for sure. I have like 1000 hours in it it's ridiculous but honestly if you never have, definitely check out Slippi Melee. Melee is harder to get into but putting time into it just feels so rewarding especially with rollback. I love traditional fighting games but Smash offers such freedom of movement and allows you to just freeform combos without worrying about max damage for everything

@@Mkdenn at the end of the day what you want to put your time into is up to you, but melee online at this point is leagues better than ultimates. Ultimate is going to be more relevant to the people that you’ll meet in your life, but if you’re playing by yourself online, I’d say melee is the better option. Ultimate online quickly gets frustrating and melees can too, but the elimination of lag and input delay in slippi makes it actually feel like you got your ass kicked when you lose. Everything is either your fault or your win, whereas ultimate can feel like bullshit when you accidentally buffer an air dodge 2 seconds in advance or get matched up with a spammy projectile character on random stages with items. Final note, ultimates ranking system is really frustrating especially when you win and someone quits out since you don’t gain gsp. Or if someone leaves mid match you’re still punished for also leaving since they put you up against a bot. It’s a lose-lose situation.

As someone who has played smash for 10,000 hours and some tournaments I agree with the placement on the list but i would say the best fighting game of all time is marvel vs Capcom 2 If I were to make a list it would be 1 DLC characters like kazuya, aegis, Steve, min min are just broken and quite a few others should be re made 2 the buffer system is stupid nobody needs 6 extra frames to buffer something 3 the online 4 the game was made for casuals so the game still works in that sort of fashion

I respect your reasoning for putting Ultimate #1, but I just can't look past just how bad the online is. A game where playing your buddies that live on the other side of town feels like playing vs someone on the other side of the world should not be ranked #1. Online is one of the biggest factors that go into determining what makes a good fighting game. DBFZ would be one of the best fighting games of all time if the online was playable from the start. Strive is the biggest example of a game having amazing online but nothing else to show for it. The gameplay is too heavy imo and trying to match against someone with their lobby system is brutal. Of your list I'd probably go: SF6>MKX>T7>DBFZ>Strive>IJ2>MK11>Multiverses>Ultimate>SFV

Tekken is definitely my favorite fighting game series of all time but Tekken 7 was kind of void of content compared to injustice. Granted I wasn’t a fan of injustice 2 because of the gear system and the loot boxes for gear, but at least it had more to do with grinding and ARCADE ENDINGS!!! Which Tekken 7 has taken away for some reason. The fighting is definitely the best until 8 comes out but injustice 2 had a reason for you to fight unlike what Tekken 7 had

Also, considering how Street Fighter 6 and Marvel vs Capcom Infinite were criticized by the lackluster offering and Tekken 7 basically getting away scott free still left a bitter mark on the game that i never fully recovered, coupled with the fact Harada is still an asshole with zero social skills, and you have it at that. Tekken 8 is better, but its basically Tekken 7 upgrade and that's about it.

The game awards is really just a popularity contest, how The King of Fighters XV didn't win fighting game of the year is beyond me. It's like how the RPG of year category always excludes the Legend of Heroes Trails games some of the best RPG's of all time in favor of more popular WRPG's and their many expansions. Seriously it always bugs me to see expansions being nominated especially when the main game alwas nominated the year before and won.
