Fighting Games are pretty magical. You don't have to be good, you don't even have to play frequently, if you have any competitive bone in your body you will get sucked into tournaments especially if you're there live. Hell there are even fighting games that aren't fighting games that show up at tournaments like Catherine or Windjammers. Just like you'll find a character to mesh with you'll find a game to mesh with. Finally got around to watching this and it's an amazing watch, awesome work Wil!

I could never get into it, I always thought the digitized look of the early ones was ugly compared to what Capcom and SNK were doing in the late 90s, and even in the modern 3d ones the animations for attacking and especially cancelling things into combos just looks off. It seems like an actual problem, I don't know why Netherrealm won't address it.

Honestly have to disagree with anyone trying to get ppl to play fighting games. Fighting games are a miserable genre to learn. I will die on the hill that even the most complex moba is easier to teach than most fighting games. Like, ive tried to get every single friend ive ever had into granblue fantasy rising, a fairly easy fighting game. Not a single one played longer than a day. Same happened with sf6. And yet i was able to get every single one of them to stick with league to this day and i barely even tried with that one. We all now play league ranked together as a group. None of them have ever touched a moba before this. And i think i know why. Fighting games are HORRIBLE at teaching the player what the rules are, while they are playing it. Like, if you use an ability in league and the enemy spell-shields it (which negates the ability), there are 3 different visual cues to let you know what just happened. The enemy has a blue/purple colored shield around them, their health bar gets a purple border, and the text; "SPELL IMMUNE" pops up over their character. It doesnt take very long for you to notice a correlation to your spells not working and the enemy having that blue/purple bubble around them. I never had to even mention this mechanic to them, they quickly and naturally learned what spellshields are by just playing the game. Fighting games do the total opposite of this. If you try to block low and get hit by an overhead, there is nothing. No text, no unique color for the attack, no special announcement, no unique particle effect, nothing. You will have no idea what happened unless you do some google-fu. I have yet to see a fighting game tutorial (that ive played) mention the existence of overhead attacks and what they do. If you just blocked an attack and try to counter attack, but it fails, You wont know why. There is not a single mention of frame data anywhere, assuming you even know enough about how video games are created to know what "frame data" even is. Every game has frame data, but there isnt a single genre that makes knowing about it mandatory except fighters. Did you know that doing a metered dragon punch makes you invulnerable on frame 1? I sure as heck didnt. I only figured that out after looking at dustloop. Most command lists just dont feel like mentioning this bc the devs assume you already know this (which is only true for players already familiar with the genre). Fighting games have made little to no strides in this department. Who cares that DP can now be done with modern inputs, they likely arent gonna understand the significance of what the DP does to use it properly anyways. Most games also dont bother with alternative game modes or any fun, because fun isnt allowed for some reason. Your game will have a 2 different online modes (ranked and unranked), and an arcade mode thats garbage and you will shut up and be grateful.

i just want to say something about sticks. i'm new to fighters, about 2 months in, and just recently bought a stick. so i'm coming from the position of a beginner. my only prior experience was mortal kombat at the corner liquor store in the 90s lol the stick helps, a lot. there might not be data on that, but for me it was a game changer. especially in a game like tekken where button combos like ff 1+3 are hard on controller. i always got bad inputs like instead of 1+3 id accidentally also hit 2 or 4. very conscientious of my mistakes and actively trying to correct them and even still, was very hard to get the form for accurate button presses the stick having large buttons spaced apart completely removed that issue for me. the quick double tap for a ff, i've also learned to korean bd relatively quickly, are much easier on stick personal preference definitely matters. there are pros that compete with a pad. but for me, the stick was a massive help

I like fightsticks because: A)Honestly, it depends on the game, but I like the more precise clicks. I like playing SF with stick, MVC with controller(Joystick. Don't judge me.), and Tekken with Circlepad- B) I also like using a keyboard, and, over a keyboard, I get more flexibility with a fight stick. C) Finalburn-I mean, using the completely legally available means to play old arcade games with a fight stick is SO much better. D) clicky buttons :D Edit: Also, ironically, by your definition, KOF is one of the easiest games to play. I mean, probably hot take: It kind of is, but still kind of funny considering the more hardcore community around it.

i think the short answer to why street fighter 1 continued was that there were some people at the company who saw the good ideas in the game like special moves and the tournament set up with a lot of different characters and went on to make Final Fight instead but agree that game became as huge as it did they went back to street fighter and refined the ideas into what we know fighting games as now

I mean, I suck in probably every way possible, but I simply react slower than most people on a basic biological level. It’s only noticeable in things like fighting games. What can I do to minimize the impact of that?

Maybe pick a game with "modern" controls, SF6 or recent GranBlue. Less time for input means more time to react. But in general, a lot of things in fighting games are not reactable.

I think Street Fighter VI is a great pick because: 1. The world tour mode is a great way to understand fundamental concepts of fighting games. 2. It's the most popular game right now so you have the largest number of new players to play with and learn the game step by step. Now for your choice of character pick whoever you like the most. It doesn't really matter. You have great guides on the internet for every character. Learning fighting games is hard so playing with a character you like can give you the motivation to keep going. Don't worry if they're classified as "hard" or "technical". You will start by doing simple stuff anyway.

An actual problem with modern fighting games is the size they take on the systems main drive. Even Killer Instinct now eats 80gb where before an infamous update it only took 40. Tekken 8, Street Fighter 6, KoFXV, the before mentioned KI, Samurai Shodown Remake and few other titles eat up more than half of my drive space on my console. And those games won't play from an external drive. Killer Instinct once did - before the update. I am now waiting for the latest Fatal Fury entry in April 2025 as it is announced for now. And I also play other games. I won't go shuffle games around the entire time when I want to switch between them on the fly. Compare Street Fighter IV in its latest state with all DLC content to Street Fighter 6 that is still building content in the future. Or Tekken 6 vs Tekken 8. Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 in comparison to Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. It is insane. And I won't buy a gaming PC where I have to upgrade my graphics card every two years now or switch other components because the latest update needs it. This all truly sucks and makes gaming a matter of harsh choices and forces selections.

think the fgs have 5 main problems that if fixed can make everyone happy: 1: Hiding important information This is a problem because fgs have way too much going offscreen. A basic fg will show you only the combo, counter, recovery and one or two system mechanics. (Sf only shows when the combo ends and Tekken doesnt even show counters) When important stuff like incorrect block, punish, chance to escape, plus or minus have 0 way to know if you dont read it somewhere (because even the own game wont tell you). How to fix: simply make like Dual Souls (goated game) and show it 2: Bad movement Walking is kinda sluggish, jump is unsetting and poor explored. Crouch doenst let evade any move. Also in some games you cant even air block! Is kinda hard to explain that for someone who doesnt play fgs. How to fix: Honestely i dont have many ideas, but making air block a standard, allow crouching low profile more standing moves, allow to change your jump direction more like a platformer would be a good start. 3: Confusing animations A lot of moves make no sense. Like a kick that hit your feet hits mid (looking at you Valentine) , and the most overheading thing hitting mid too (looking at you Chipp and Sol from ggac). Not only that, but a Anti Air uppercut, a crouching punch that would be reasonable hitting mid hits low for no reason (looking at every under Night character). Combined with the problems above and below kinda kills the quality. How to fix: Simply make them making sense. And if its too broken make it a littler weaker too. 4: Unbalance between high/low blocking Ok, having 2 types of blocking is kinda bad by itself, but the advantages of one ridiculously outweigh the other. If you stand block you can protect yourself of moves that hit your head a torso but leaves your legs unprotected, and if you crouch block you can protect your torso and legs at the cost of having your head exposed. This sounds balanced on paper, but there are much more low moves than high moves, and most of them dont hit crouching characters. Well, they cant block an air attack so just need to jump and hit them, right? No, because the moment you leave the floor you cant do nothing untill you reach a range that will make every move miss. On top of that lows can be 2 frames while the fastest overhead is 18 frames (makes a huge difference), meaning that you cant punish them safely even if youre plus. A the end this makes the genre very annoying and the pros will take a giant advantage of the begginers because most of them block high. How to fix: Might seem crazy, but i suggest 1 lows should be as fast as an overhead. 2 you should be able to do air attacks faster 5: Punishment for anything You die because you moved foward instead of blocking, then you die because you blocked but got punished. So you jump and die because of that, then attack with a very safe move but you die because of that too. How to fix: I have no idea, honestly 😔
@evilded22 ай бұрын
Bruh, first you need to play more fighting games so you will know when something already exists and second the genre doesn't need to be homogeneous. Oh and the part about guard direction just shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how offence, defense and neutral function in 2d fighters.
@gir3502 ай бұрын
Also, newer fighters like SF6 and Tekken 8 DO show you frame data, as well as a lot of other attack info in the mode you're supposed to use to train and practice that's conveniently labeled "Training" or "Practice."
@ardidsonriente22232 ай бұрын
What you are describing is very similar to Tekken. I honestly reccomend you to try that game instead. Jumping is not useful at all, and there are still some confusing animations (way less than in 2D games), but in general the movement is much better and there is more visual coherence, because the moves are less "abstract" (Invulnerable DPs are totally unreal and absurd, specially on wake up. They don't exist in Tekken). Frame data is less relevant because you can actually distinguish which movements are really faster or slower (The fastest jab is 9 frames IIRC), and in general, the RPS of the game is more based on knowledge than in pure guessing (You can react to most raw attacks, and even throws can be tech on reaction).

Do you not like mortal kombat? You barely mentioned it

@@MaxH0ward it’s alright, not nearly as fun to me as anything else I mentioned plus MK footage gets copyright claimed or monetization struck like crazy so I just didn’t feel like it

@@BestFriendWil oh the footage gets claimed? Thats really lame. I get it now. Thanks for the reply. This video made me want to get better at mortal kombat. Its one of my favorite series but im really bad and have mostly done the single players

Why talk about the fighting game genre instead of arena first person shooters? I don't get why fighters, which was a niche genre, is more popular than afps games. As for the video topic, personally for me SoulCalibur is the best fighting game series of all-time.

I'm certainly not watching the video you uploadedwhen you talk about Smash here and there since this video was about: "Why you should get into Fighting Games." Smash is a multiplayer party game at first and a platform brawler second. Plus it has non of the rule sets we know since the dawn of Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat II. Smash is not a fighting game. So Smash players can't even fight me on this one, only brawl their way up to the comment section.

Look, and I'm sorry man, but as soon as you said "Ryu from Smash Bros" I got hit with severe zoomeritis and immediately stopped watching the vid. Liked the vid, good luck out in these Marvel 2 streets.

You shouldn't. The fan base is self proclaimed degens, the features are bare bones even when it comes to basics that should be a given, the QoL is poor, the prices are high, the value is low, the DLC numeruous, the netplay often trash. T8 is mid, dunno where your excitement came from. Unless you wanted to play the modern Killer Instinct. KI wins again.
