I'll let you in on a little secret of the house cleaning trade. Full disclosure, I worked for a house cleaning agency for several years so I guess I'm a bit of an authority on this. This was, however close to 20 years ago so keep that in mind. Although I doubt vacuum technology has advanced that much in that time frame. First of all, vacuum cleaners still aren't that effective on hard surfaces like linoleum or hard wood. The spinning brushes (aka the beater bar) just manages to spread the dirt around. They do make suction only vacuums but most hard floors usually have dirt that suction alone won't remove. You are correct in that dust pans are just garbage and don't pick up all the dirt and you can waste a lot of time trying to get every last bit in the pan. So to save time we would sweep the hard floor dirt into a pile and then sweep the dirt onto the carpet where we would vacuum it up. As a side note, I think most people wrongly assume the spinning brushes of the vacuum cleaner are in there to help sweep dirt into the vacuum. In fact the vacuum manufacturers themselves will tell you this. However, most vacuum cleaners aren't powerful enough to suck up all of the dirt from the carpet, so the beater bar actually function to "beat" the carpet and the vibrations that this causes allows the heaviest of the dirt to just fall between the fibers of the carpet to the ground. Now that's not to say all vacuums work this way. In my experience Oreck and Kirby vacuums are powerful enough to actually suck up most of the dirt but be prepared to drop a chunk of cash if you want either of those.

I was flabbergasted listening to NLs duvet shenanigans as it takes literal seconds, so if you are READING this: First you fold your cover inside out. Then you reach inside (all the way) and grip the corners. Next you grab two corners of your duvet (short side - same as the cover’s corners) aswell and now you shake it like you mean it, resulting in the sheet still crumbled up your arms being freed and connecting with the duvet. Holding both corners (sheet&cover) makes sure they fill in perfect. DONE Thanks for the content you absolute madman.

to chime in on the lawnmower opinion: the mowing part itself isnt too bad, but having to empty the cut grass chamber is awful. its dirty and heavy, and if i want to carry if efficiently i have to hold it up against my torso, which gets my shirt and arms dirty. also, dumping the grass onto the compost pile is hell, because it doesnt flow out like sand. it sticks to the inside and i have to extend my arms and shake the thing above the compost. that part specifically is exhausting. as an added bonus, even though mowing itself isnt too hard, its LOUD. and i cant just put on my headphones, because they dont suppress the outside noise enough, so my ears still hurt. for this reason i have to wear those construction antiphone things. we dont get alot of snow, but id much rather shovel snow than mow the lawn. theres no engine to be loud, no refueling/emptying to stop my progress, and no dirty grass to make all my skin and clothes green. yeah its more manually intensive, but i can deal with that. also, you generally only shovel snow off the driveway, not the entire lawn.

I like folding laundry and doing laundry bc I usually watch long videos like this one and argue with my phone as I'm folding or hanging up clothes. Having a good laundry room setup helps a lot. I keep hangers in the laundry room so as soon as shirts come out of the dryer I put them on hangers instead of tossing them in a laundry basket so they never wrinkle. Then I fold pants and put those in a laundry basket then I go room to room with the hangers and basket and put stuff away. I use a lot of scented stuff in my laundry so everything smells so good it's enjoyable

Whilst I accept that vacuuming is the superior mode of cleaning to sweeping there are a few more instances where sweeping is prefferable. As somebody who lives in a flat and doesn't want to annoy the neighbours sweeping is a stealthy option i can employ at night or early in the mornings. Sweeping is a faster and more regular upkeep task. If you keep a small broom in the kitchen, you can use it for 30 seconds when you pop into the kitchen to do something else to keep the floor free of crumbs/hair/kitchen litter. Using the vacuum usually requires getting it out, plugging it in unless you have one of those low profile expensive wireless ones so will always consume more time. Plus once you've vacuuming you might as well do the next room, and so on. Finally brushes are cheap, light, and just work.
