Ranking EVERY Ivy Costume - Palette Swap

I think that, Ivy’s 1p from Soul Calibur 5 has been unanimously decided, by most of if not all of the fandom as her best 1p in the entire series, because it’s the happy marriage between her backstory as a noblewoman, and her seductive domanatrix play style.

Something interesting about Ivy is the choice to put her in purple, because some of the good characters have worn blue at least once , whilst the evil characters have worn red at least once, but because for most of her main costumes, Ivy wears purple, which I see as her being a morally ambiguous character, because she has done bad things, but is trying to do the good thing in the end, but no matter how much good she does she’s still entwined to Soul Edge, due to being Cervantes’ daughter.

Ivy is such an iconic character, and her whip sword is awesome! Yes her 1P costume from SC1 onward is iconic, but to me my favorite look from her is her 2P costume in SC4. Sure, the costume itself could’ve used a few more intricate designs, but The different hairstyle worked really well for Ivy, so that’s why I like it the most. I also like Her 3P Costume in SC2. perhaps due to being a red dress, to me it vaguely reminds me of the Spanish noblewoman’s dress style, so I interpreted That as Ivy does have some appreciation to the culture and fashion of her true Spanish heritage, even despite rightfully hating her biological father.

That’s a good point about her SCII 3P. I like that her designs often reflect those of Cervantes, because despite her best efforts, she’s never truly free from his influence.

Her soulcalibur 5 design was the reason I started to play her more. But probably become of nostalgia her soulcalibur 3 2p is my favorite. I just love the rose costume.

Soul Calibur costumes are all an outward representation of each character's soul. Every change to Ivy represents a change in her Soul. In 3 she started gaining goodness so her costume was white. In 4 her sould torn apart. And so on and so forth.

Ivy is one of my favorite characters from Soul Calibur, you and I have the same exact opinions on everything. I personally almost loathe her main costumes because it's clearly just fan service and her character seems to be disregarded while designing them. Her alternate costumes are almost always better for the reasons that you mention, they actually feel well thought out and show off her character. I would love if you added Sophitia to the list, she has a lot of interesting costumes too !

Thanks for Covering Ivy. She is one of the characters alongside Cassandra, Sophitia, Taki, Kilik and Mitsurugi to me when I think Soul Calibur. All of the characters in Soul Calibur are just very memorable to me. The only other Soul Calibur Character I wish to see covered next is the Ninja Taki

project soul tripping over themselves to make sure that ivy maintains her eyecandy status in the roster honestly does such a disservice to her because of how fascinating her story is. like it detracts from her story imo 😭 sc6 actually gave a canon explanation for why she dresses like that in libra of souls, she tells the conduit that dressing like that helps to strengthen her connection to her sword. and tbh that explanation feels like such bs to me LOL my favorite outfit of hers has to be her sc3 2p outfit. it feels so appropriate for her, its so elegant and communicates her story and what shes all about so well imo. side note, something i think is really funny is how much crap people give patroklos because he murdered innocent people who he was told were actually all malfested. but then you have ivy, who spent all her time in sc2 consciously and knowingly murdering innocent people who were tainted by soul edge by no fault of their own because she thought she was doing good. and no one seems to bat an eyelash at her for having that be her motivation for some time. it actually makes me think back on her participation in sc5. i feel like she should have played a bigger role as a mentor to patroklos since they both had committed such horrible atrocities, maybe ivy could have given him some much needed guidance outside of just the instructions on how to resurrect soul edge

I would have preferred if Ivy’s response to the Conduit was just “Because I like dressing this way. Deal with it.” Like, there’s no hiding that it’s fanservice, so I don’t see a point in trying to justify it. It reminds me of ProZD’s “anime fans” video.

I actually think the SCVI costume beautifuly incorporates details from the previous games. With SCI/II silhouette and the snake pattern from latter games, the costume incorporates proeminently the intertwined motif from SCIII, the strings/ropes from SCIV and the lace and multitone purples from SCV.

Ivy is one of my most favorite characters in the Soul Calibur series but i will admit that I never much cared for her fetishy dominatrix look because it didn't fit her character. She's an uppe-rclass noblewoman who is assertive and also celibate so her wearing such a provocative outfit made no sense at all. The outfits themselves weren't bad per say, they just didn't work for the kind of character she was/is and her SC4 1p was the most distasteful of all her looks. I hated it back in 2008 and I still hate it now and I wouldn't have been as kind to the rating for it as you were but that's just me haha. Her 2p was a tad better but still felt very off, at least in the game's model rendering because the concept art for it looked much better giving a more sinister look to it. But as much as I don't care for the dominatrix theme with her, I agree tenfold that her 1p from SC5 was arguably the best she's ever looked in that dominatrix theme because of how they added more elegant pieces to it like the lace and the aristocrat-style jacket. It's a beautiful outfit and her 2p was just as good. I remember not really liking the fur rings on her legs at first but I eventually came around to it because it actually kinda works in a haute couture kind of way and it probably helped that I actually like Mari Shimazaki's character designs for Bayonetta and Ivy could totally crossover into that game wearing that outfit and would fit right in. Her SC3 look was a step up above SC2 but the white color palette never really worked for me and I think it would've looked better if it had the the purple/gold palette of the previous outfits. It didn't help that when it came to custom coloring it, you couldn't color the light blue portions of it neither. Her 2p from the game? It's honestly my most favorite Ivy look of all her outfits. The lace, the rose decals, the veil, just everything about it was absolutely brilliant and felt like it would've been the perfect outfit for her character alongside her SC1 and SC2 2ps as well. I think it's safe to say that most of us loved her 2ps since they felt much more inline with her character and it's a shame that SC6 didn't give alternate outfits because it would've been nice to see what kinda noblewoman outfit they would've given her. Anyway great breakdown!
