I think the attraction to Belief is that sonically, it was derived from Wheel. Look up 'Simmering'. He's playing an early iteration of Belief, without fully fleshed out lyrics so you hear him reference Wheel and include a verse from Clapton's Old Love just to ad lib this tune... LIVE! Personally, I wish this was the studio version. And the two guitar solos are sublime.
@carlosangel94043 жыл бұрын
I couldn't possibly rank the singles, so kudos for taking that task on. But if we're talking albums: (Edit: I wanted to put number ratings, too, but I forgot, so here there are now 👍) 8. Sob Rock - Not sure what he was thinking here. By far his worst album. All of the singles that came out are great (except Carry Me Away), but the album as a unit is incredibly disappointing. (Light 3, decent 4/10) 7. Heavier Things - Not a bad album, but a bit of a step down from his debut. Clarity, Bigger Than My Body, Daughters and Wheel are the best in the whole album. Pretty forgettable. (4.5/10) 6. Battle Studies - The standard John Mayer album. This only gets thrown to the wayside because of the controversy surrounding him at the time. Sort of the middle of the road in terms of tone, theme, and replayability, but definitely not skimping out on the production. Heartbreak Warfare, Half Of My Heart, Who Says, and Friends, Lovers, or Nothing are the stand out singles. (5 to 5.5/10) 5. The Search for Everything - This one was tough. This and Paradise Valley are very similar in that they have equal amounts good and 'so so' about it. The ending of this album is why I wanted to put it higher, but ultimately it's just another good John Mayer album. Best singles are Still Feel Like Your Man, Emoji of a Wave, Helpless, Love on the Weekend, Rosie, Roll it on Home, and You're Gonna Live Forever in Me. 4. Paradise Valley - This just squeezed its way above TSFE purely because of the sentimental value of the record. This was made during his relationship with Katy Perry, and TSFE was made after it ended. There is more rawness and self-reflection in PV since this was during the highest point of both his career and his personal life. It was tough, but this won just barely. Best singles are Wildfire, Dear Marie, Paper Doll, and Who You Love. (Both PV and TSFE get a 6.5/10) 3. Room for Squares - His debut album that shot him up to the top of the charts instantly. I was going to put Paradise Valley before this, but after relistening to it, it's honestly miraculous how he was able to instantly find his sound with his FIRST LP. That's unprecedented even for groups like the Stones or the Beatles. With this album, he cemented himself as one of the most talented singer-songwriters of our generation. Best singles are No Such Thing, Why Georgia, Neon, and Your Body is A Wonderland (I guess...) (7.5/10) 2. Continuum - Not just one of his best albums, but also one of the best modern soul albums ever made. Nearly every single song on this record is pure perfection. There is not a single bad song on this album; even the least memorable songs on Continuum are solid gold in terms of sonic quality and lyrical substance. John's ability as a master of his craft is on full display here. This will go down in history as one of the most influential and popular albums of the 21th century and of all time. (9.5/10) And it's not even his best! That spot is filled by... 1. Born and Raised - If Continuum was near perfect, this is John Mayer's Magnum Opus. For the longest time, I put this album below Continuum. I thought that Continuum was better because it was more thematically complex and dealt with heavier subject matter. But after listening to this album countless times, I can definitively say that this is more than just an album: it's a work of art. And it's beauty comes in its simplicity. There are no screaming guitar solos or in-depth messages on belief or the concept of death. It's just a man and his guitar, telling us how he really feels. It's John's realest, rawest, and most emotionally investing album he has ever made, and I fully believe it to be the greatest John Mayer album of all time. (10/10) Honor mentions go to 'Try!' and 'Where The Light Is.' I didn't include them because John Mayer Trio are a separate group from John Mayer the artist, and both are live albums, which means they have most of the same songs from other albums. If you were ask me, though, 'Try!' is the better live album.
@jimmyvera798110 ай бұрын
Wtf how belied is just “good”, anything in that song is perfect, and whenever John play it’s on live, he just proves to me that it’s his song that he uses to shine in his performances.

I decided in the first 10 seconds of your video that it would be very likely that I would enjoy it if for no other reason than you having the courage to try to rank all of JM’s songs! My favorite two songs of his are Heart of Life and Stop this Train. This verse from HoL, “You know it's nothin' new/Bad news never had good timing/Then the circle of your friends/Will defend the silver lining” is my favorite lyric…and sentiment. You are right about Stop this Train…you will experience it differently as you get older-maybe more deeply. Also, as a side comment, I now realize that I don’t actually know many of the names of his songs. I know all the songs but just not the names. Did the search for everything a little dirty tho…. You have to add sob rock now, but don’t even think about it before giving it two weeks of listening. I feel like every John mayor song is a completely different song from the first listen to two weeks of listing. Also that two weeks of “listing to it” version, for me, seems more like the version John was intending. It’s like he finds a way for everyone to get something out of the song in the beginning and then finds a way to make the true fans get way more out of it after hearing it 20 times. Good stuff 👍🏻😎

@karmasubba38633 жыл бұрын
You seem like a massive fan! But not being a negative nut out here, the rankings youve done out here seems like its kinda based on commercial success type of thing! Cause many John Mayer hardcore fans base his music on their personal aweness in listening to his songs! And this could be your list!! But like John himself said, he doesnt have a set of songs that he could play at a concert and make everyone happy!Like we all know all his songs are a masterpiece! Like i would deffo put split screen sadness, and new deep in god tier and Something’s Missing is just rich! And also, to make a 18 minute video rankings about John Mayers songs and not including his off albumn tracks is just not satisfying man! We all know where the real gems are! And also the trio albumn!! So this vid is exciting but very controversial at the same time! Anyways, great effort !
@stirlinghowe3 жыл бұрын
Definitely didn't make any decisions based on commercial success (if that were the case "Born and Raised" and "Waitin' on the Day" wouldn't be in the top category. If you were to ask me today, I'd lump "Roll It On Home" in there as well). I left out all the live stuff because there would be a ton of song overlap, so I hope that makes sense! Thanks for watching :)
@karmasubba38633 жыл бұрын
@@stirlinghowe I didn’t say you based it on commercial success! Im just saying the list turned out to be that way! Like No Such Thing is a great hit, but Why Georgia is obviously a better song with its idea and the lyrics! And the whole idea of rating Johns songs is kind of a tricky idea cause as we all know Mayers major strengths in his imitable songwriting and his mesmerising guitar playing so we cant really judge the songs on just the basis of like it being a good song or not! For example, Neon doesn’t necessarily come out as the best idealistic Mayer songs, but it’s his best ‘technically impressive’ song! And, just a personal take, i found it uneasy when you rated ‘you’re e gonna live forever in me’ that low cause that song has one of the best lines John ever wrote in his career! And also, i didn’t get it when you said the songs would overlap cause Try! Is a live album and there includes some songs originally by Mayer that are not released studio wise! Like again man, i guess its kind of a turn off as a Mayer head you didn’t do his unreleased tunes! Maybe a good idea for a video in future👍🏻! Like how can you not wanna talk about Covered in Rain or In Your Atmosphere, or The Hurt, Tracing, Taking on Water when you’re talking about the best John Mayer songs right? I see Goat tiers everywhere!!

I personally would have put more in wouldn't recommend, simply because i wouldn't on a litteral basis. Even though none of those songs suck *curse word*, some of them are boring/forgetable (in my opinion of course). But it would give more value to the songs I actually like and love, and think is god tier. I would put MAX 5 songs in the god tier category. Probably four. Simply because I would want that category to be exclusive to the ones I would equate to historic music, both in a personal and general sense. And probably more from a guitar history perspective. Question: Are you a guitarist? I ask becuase some of the guitar focused songs i would put on amazing, you put on ok/good. Like Call me the Breeze and Crossroads. I LOVE Crossroads. The guitar work on that one is just so cool that I would put it on amazing.

Makes sense! It's difficult for me to _really_ rank the songs since I genuinely love most of them. I do play guitar-I can definitely appreciate the guitar focused songs (like the covers you mentioned), but they're just not as exciting to me within the context of the albums. I'd rather hear them live!

Wildflower Reprise sounds like the music for an insurance commercial.

I don't agree with your ranking, but I can say all his albums hit differently at each stage of your life.
