Gen 1 is such an underated map imo. each biome is so imersive and the introduction of missions while clunky for sure, it was still great for pve giving those players more to do and giving them a reason to tame war mounts

Fascinating for me as a new player who is still on the Island. I’ve been playing for a little less than two months with one single player character and one character on an unofficial server for the multiplayer experience. It’s taking me considerable time to get through all the things to do there. First it was mastering the basics, exploring enough to find Obsidian and Crystal (this legit was a problem for me at one point), then travelling to each Biome to learn it’s quirks and unique dangers and working out which species are the best to tame. And then I established three main fortresses at strategic points on the map to keep my breeding pairs and main workshops safely behind double layered walls to prevent my tames accidentally inviting trouble from wild dinos by partially clipping through the walls. I also built a network of smaller outposts in each biome to have a bed, basic armour, a ranged weapon and melee weapon, basic supplies and a flyer for those times when retrieving your gear and hopefully the tame is possible to do. I ended up repurposing my old Pterodactyls for this duty. Only then did I get around to doing the one thing in Ark that I quickly learned to hate. Caving in order to collect the Artifacts. So far I have defeated the Gamma Broodmother and Ape. I have one more cave to finish before I face the Gamma Dragon. I always use Otters to collect multiples of each artifact so after I finish all the Gamma level stuff I’ll go back to try the Beta versions before moving on. Hence why I watch videos like this. While I intend to play the story Arks in order, I want to side track to one of the custom maps first. Which one? Not sure yet.

My favorites are the center, crystal isles, and fjordur. Scorched is up there for me too. I don’t understand the hate on the center, I think it’s way prettier and better than the island, but just my opinion.

Why do people put Ragnarök so high??? Back when it was released, sure, it was a good map for ARK, but I think nostalgia ranks it so high instead of any objective metric. Objectively, it's not a great map. It doesn't offer anything unique other than the Griffon. Everything else was a variant. It's really no better than Crystal Isles or Valguero. It's certainly not better than Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 (both of which offer unique ways to progress your character and story, love it or hate it, it's unique). Extinction was far better with the Titan mechanics, ability to farm drops with a defense mission, and to farm Element without killing bosses. Each iteration of the released maps, POST Scorched earth, changed the way you played the game for that map. Aberration eliminated fliers, which players didn't think they could live without, and implemented a day and night cycle which actually mattered. Extinction created an all-new way to progress a character outside of boss fights, unless you think Titan fights are boss, or sub-boss fights, while implementing a more engaging farming mechanism and ever-present dangers with corrupted creatures. Genesis 1 and Gensis 2 both created a more interesting and skill-based progression towards bosses where team gameplay in PvE was the only way to perform many of the alpha mission variants. Lost Island was a decent map but no better than any other DLC. The boss fight was the typical arena beatdown. Fjorduer, i think was the only map worthy to mention among the official map releases as it offers some unique mechanics and opportunities for players without too much deviation from the standard gameplay. Objectively speaking I would rank S-Tier: Gen 1, Abberation, Island (this classic kicked it off with all its mechanics. You can't argue that it was what started the entire formula). A-Tier, Gen 2, Extinction, Fjordur B-Tier: Scorched Earth, Lost Island Ragnarok C-Tier: Crystal Isle, Valguero D-Tier: The Center (it has nothing of any redeeming value. Even the boss fight is a remix of a previous series of boss fights).

My ranking of the Ark maps. 1. Scorched Earth (Best map in my opinion. I love Scorched Earth a lot. Most unique and I have the best memories, mutations, and bases on Scorched Earth.) 2. Genesis Part 2 (One of the most beautiful maps, and has awesome creatures and lore. Some missions are frustrating, but the Rockwell Prime boss and the biomes are so cool.) 3. Fjordur (Norse mythology inspired map is very unique, and the references are epic. But it's a little bit lower because it has a lot more grinding.) 4. Crystal Isles (Probably the most beautiful map in the Ark series. The Crystal Wyverns and biomes are great, but less mythology content than Scorched or Fjordur.) 5. Lost Island (The base locations and exploration is very cool here. The jungle vibe temples, and little island clusters are nice spots to admire, and it has a lot of unique creatures and engrams, but it is not quite as beautiful as Crystal Isles.) 6. Extinction (The map sucks in my opinion, and the grinding is absolute hell. But the lore and the King Titan boss is top tier, so that saves it and brings it up to 6th place.) 7. Ragnarok (It starts off pretty cool at first. But gets boring very fast. It just expands The Island and adds copy and paste biomes and creatures, without the cool lore.) 8. The Island (Ah yes, the original nostalgic map we all started. It was awesome back in the old days, and the Tek Cave is cool. But now, it feels empty and boring because it has no unique creatures or engrams.) 9. Valguero (The map is kinda like a Ragnarok but cut in half and even more empty. It has very few biomes, and even less creatures.) 10. Genesis Part 1 (Sure it looks cool, but it has as much grinding as Extinction, and harder missions than its sequel. This map also has no safe zones and is nearly impossible without Creative commands.) 11. The Center (Only thing this map has is that it looks cool. It doesn't have any unique creatures, and it has even less than The Island because there's no Tek Cave. Sorry but it aged badly compared to the other maps.) 12. Aberration (Worst map in my opinion. Bruh I can't even play that glitchy mess of a map. It constantly crashes and deletes my data, it is hell, and I'll never play it again, because losing my stuff and progress to game crashes and glitches is absolutely horrendous.)

Dear OnFire944, Why would you put Valguero so low? Have you been in It’s castle? “Copy of Ragnorok.” You called it. Ragnorok does not have an aberrant biome or deinonychus (which are my favorite creatures in all of ark). Valguero is landlocked, but has an underground ocean, have you seen that? I strongly suggest you check these out because it easily made me change my mind about Valguero, especially the Ab cave. Same with The Center, it has one of the biggest cave ecosystems that I suggest you check out. Get the Artifact of The Pack on The Center and tell me your opinion on it. Also Ragnorok has the 2nd most interesting bosses in my opinion, (1st being Fjordur ofc) The Spirits at Oasis are really fun to fight, so are the Lava Golem and Iceworm Queen. And the area that you fight the main 2 bosses is really cool imo.
