@@darkanayer5867 Well Twilight Clerics get all the creepy lurking abilities and flight, paired with the Thri-Kreen psychic abilities and obvious bug shape (with some cosmetic reflavoring) is perfect Mothman. If you wanna go the extra mile (and who doesn’t in DND?) then maybe take the Eldritch Adept feat and get infinite Disguise Self for your humanoid Indrid Cold persona.

I love the idea of a Plasmoid Barbarian - it really makes sense that increasing their Constitution increases their Armor Class. Maybe their ooze is getting sturdier and tougher! Plus they don't have to wear armor, and can use their amorphous trait a lot more easily.

"Reload. A limited number of shots can be made with a weapon that has the reload property. A character must then reload it using an action or a bonus action (the character’s choice)." "Burst Fire. A weapon that has the burst fire property can make a normal single-target attack, or it can spray a 10-foot-cube area within normal range with shots. Each creature in the area must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or take the weapon’s normal damage. This action uses ten pieces of ammunition." Renaissance weapons (the pistol and the musket) have the loading property. Modern and Futuristic weapons have the reload property. Astral Elf can Starlight Step as many times as their proficiency between long rests (2-6!), and their cantrip can use the casting ability of your choice. These are big changes to what we're used to here.

Awesome vid, loving the Spelljammer book so far :D *Now, to clarify for people that might be going nuts rn about how broken a hadozee Barb might be:* more accurately, a hadozee barb can reduce a claw attack from an adult gold dragon to zero if THE DRAGON rolls average (15 on 2d6+8) and THE HADOZEE rolls almost max damage reduction (7 on 1d6+2(prof)) while in rage. *It also requires a reaction. And also can be used prof times per long rest.* That means when you reduce damage to 0 once, you then get a *"Impressive. And what are you gonna do about the second one, Oonoki?"* moment right after for the second claw attack XD And if you wanna make a Captain America impression, you can at most say "I can do this all day, but only twice." at lvl 1st, which was the example in question ;D

I'm more focused on being able to officially do my fan the hammer artificer artillerist build (aka use the 11th level ability spell storing item with either shatter or scorching ray and being able to spam use it (it counts as the use an object action) 3 times on a turn with your action haste action and bonus action additionally 2 levels of fighter would bring that to 4 casts with your action surge action) sure it won't out damage the Variant of this build that uses the bugbear's turn 1 extra damage (2d6 extra damage per attack roll combined with scorching ray which gives 3 attack rolls per cast against an enemy who hasn't acted in initiative) but it does have more battlefield control with it's movement options

Just a heads-up, resistance is calculated after damage reductions. iirc it goes vulnerability, reductions, resistance, immunity. This had been discussed a long time ago with heavy armor master and spell combos.

The hypothetical posed of a Thri-Kreen dual-wielding a greatsword and a shortsword doesn't work, since two-weapon fighting requires using a light weapon in the main hand. The Dual Wielder feat removes the light weapon requirement, but not the one-handed melee weapon requirement. One could theoretically wield 2 shortswords and a shield, or a longsword, shortsword, and shield with the Dual Wielder feat, though. The Thri-kreen secondary arms ability seems to work best for martial/caster hybrids that don't get their weapons as spell foci in games where the DM is a stickler for material and somatic components. Characters like Artificers, Paladins, Rangers, and Valor Bards.

@@Seelenverheizer can’t do those things either. The secondary arms can’t wield shields, only light weapons. All this lets you do is two-weapon fighting with light weapons while also wielding a shield in one of the main hands.

Best option is shield and two light weapons and still having a free hand for reloading or casting. There isn't really any sort of all 4 arms at once build that works like the old systems.

The thri-keen don’t change the two weapon fighting rules, so unless you have dual wielded, you’re still only allowed to attack with 2 light weapons and even the feat specifies one handed weapons, so it doesn’t work with the greatsword

I guess it might hold a dagger or hand crossbow for emergency ranged damage. Oh, I've got it! Wand of Frowns: a common magic item. Make your target make a frowny face before double-stabbing it. It has no mechanical benefit but style for days.

11:30 quick note about Two Weapon Fighting "When you take the Attack action and attack with a *light* melee weapon that you’re holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you’re holding in the other hand." Your initial attack, *must* be with a light weapon. Unless you have dual wielder feat. Or if your DM doesn't care. The fighter's Two Weapon Fighting style does help here, but even if you carry 4 short swords you can only make one attack and one bonus action attack (so no san-to-ryu unfortunately)

Btw the Thri-Keen are also an insane spellcaster race, as they have natural armor and their four arms allow you to cary a shield in one of your "main" hands, a simple or martial in your other "main" hand in case someone comes closes, your spellcasting focus in your first "off" hand and leave your fourth arm open for somstic componets. You are basically allowed to use your shield, a weapon and cast spells without having the war caster feat. Using point buy we can have a spellcaster with 8 Str, 14 Dex, 14, Con, 10 Int, 10 Wis and 15 Cha, using TCE rules we can apply the race stats to charisma and dexterity and have 15 dex and 17 cha. At level 4 use the ASI to bump up these stats again and now you have 18 AC (13+3+2), +5 on a Rapier and +3 on the damage and also 18 Charisma for your spells.

In order to make a bonus action two weapon fighting attack, the first attack must be made with a light weapon, so the thri-kreen combo doesn’t work unless you have dual wielder. If you had extra attack, you could do greatsword, short sword, then bonus action short sword though

I've seen plasmoid when it was in the unearthed arcana. It's a great concept, though not especially strong. I like the idea of being a spell casting ooze, picking up eldritch adept to have at will mage armor, and just pew pew with magic. And I'd rule touch spells are okay to use with the tentacle if they're not attacks, since it doesn't say anything about it, except that the pseudopod can't attack. 10 foot range cure wounds? I'll take it.

Dextrous feet doesn't technically give you a "use an object" action though, it lets you manipulate an object with your feet. It's a little unclear, definitely will be up to your DM! Personally, I'd allow it if it sounds feasible i.e. opening a bag of holding or an eversmoking bottle

Hate to be that guy but, flying squirrel-monkey barb would still take damage with rage and using their racial. PHB, ch9, under damage resistance and vulnerability section, 3rd paragraph, states that resistance and vulnerability are applied after all other modifiers have been applied. In other words, adding or subtracting to damage, by applying modifiers (like str or dex) and/or any die roll(s), happen before doubling or halving the damage with vulnerability or resistance.

"Resistance and then vulnerability are applied after all other modifiers to damage. For example, a creature has resistance to bludgeoning damage and is hit by an attack that deals 25 bludgeoning damage. The creature is also within a magical aura that reduces all damage by 5. The 25 damage is first reduced by 5 and then halved, so the creature takes 10 damage." Having reread this paragraph, I think our discussion has come down to what is defined as a modifier; the the ability mods from stata and PB or does it also include any additional dice rolls. I do believe in the latter only because additional dice like sneak attack and superiority die factor in to the damage before being doubled with vulnerability, so in the same should be applied anything that would reduce damage, the same way the above stated features increases damage(including any flat values), first before resisitance is applied.

Unless it specifically states that you can make a bonus action offhand attack with the extra arms after any kind of attack action as a Thri-Keen, you wouldn’t be able to do so after you make a two handed attack as an action. It would have to be a light attack first.

It should mean you can wield a two handed weapon and a shield, though. Which is pretty nuts by itself. That basically turns your 13+dex natural ac into 15+dex and still letting you use a big scary weapon at level 1.

Thri-keen can shoot a hand crossbow (light weapon), reload with a free hand AND hold a shield, something no other race can do. They practically have a +2 to AC over everyone else.

Thri-Kreen are very good grapplers and potentially the best race for unarmed fighters, while there are are restrictions on what you can hold with them it never says you can't grapple so an unarmed fighter can grapple two people with their primary arms (grappling isn't mentioned as a permitted action for the extra arms) while still getting the d8 damage dice

I've already pitched this idea to some GMs for a Spellgammer game. Plomoid fighter with the protection or interception fighting style. Have heavy armor, and using your shape shifting, go over the body of a small sized player. You are now their armor and can apply disadvantage to attacks made against them or deflect incoming damage since they are within 5 feet. You are a Venom symbiote or, as I like to say, the Guyver Bio Boosted Armor.

I got to do the spell jammer one shot at comiccom two weeks before this release. Thycrin the giant bug with four arms, and plasmoids are busted especially for barbarian classes. Also thycrin can hold more in its hands :D, the plasmoid fitting into any 1inch space is also awesome..our plasmoid chooses to stay In blob form instead of being upright and makes his weapons from his ooze body

The most fun possibility I see with Hadozee is being an Artificer. The possibility of using magic items as a Bonus Action just opens so many fun, powerful and flavorful combos with the Artificer's infusions and ability to create minor Magic Items. That and being a literal grease monkey mechanic is just great lol

I love how the autognome's 13+Dex AC is great for spellcasters such as Wizards & Sorcerers who no longer need Mage Armor. Get them 20 Dexterity & you have an AC of 18 (+5 with Shield).

The big problem with giff is the cost of firearms. At lv1 you are not going to be able to afford a 250g or 500g gun and I would be surprised if a DM will give you as part of your starting gear.

When I was first introduced to AD&D 2e (THAC0 was here) Spelljammer was the first setting I ever played. We had many campaigns in this setting and one of my characters was a Xixchil. For those who don’t know, Xixchil were giant space preying mantis whose claws were like scalpels and their poisonous bite induced a deep sleep, like anesthesia. They were magical surgeons that could alter and boost character stats, but you had to be very specific on what you wanted. Getting magical augmentation from them was like the old tales of djinn. You may get what you want but not how you wanted it. This was not just a trait for my character, it was a view that the race had as a whole. To stress their alien mindset You want wings, sure…but they are wings from a flightless bird. You want superhuman strength? Ok… but now you wake up without a head. You are alive and can do everything like you have one, but it’s not there. Reasoning? A head is just added weight to slow you down and get in the way. Want immortality? Ok…but your body will continue to age and rot away when you were supposed to dies until you are just a skeleton. Your stats are not affected but you didn’t say you wanted to be the same age forever. It was a lot of fun having a surgeon’s office during down time to see what happened next. Then my Xixchil kept coming back in future campaigns as an npc.

@@jamesreed5091 Absorb Elements also triggers when you take acid, cold, fire, lightning, or thunder damage and you can use a reaction to give yourself resistance to the triggering type, lowering the damage you take. These effects just give you an opportunity to lower the damage before it's actually dealt.

The Thri-Kreen is extremely good. Nothing broken, but definitely a contender for best race in the game. You can: - Use a shield and hand crossbow - Dual wield a heavy crossbow and hand crossbow - Cast spells that require somatic and material components even with a weapon and shield And these are just the benefits of having an extra set of arms. You also get permanent mage armor and advantage on stealth rolls! I’m calling it now: this is the best race for gishes and dex-based fighters

Getting 2 more AC AND an extra normal hand on a crossbow expert build is kind of broken. Can also give 2 arms to grapple two more creatures at the same time. Compare this to the Loxodon trunk.

@@SpiderWaffle Secondary Arms gives a list of specific things you can do, grapple isn't on that list. Therefore the best option for a grappling build with them is to use main arms to grapple and wield a light weapon in the Secondary Arms

Yes. They are almost the same with the difference being that Simic's can grapple as a bonus action after attacking and can attack for 1d6+str mod instead of just unarmed strike (which could be 1d6 or more). Both can't wield weapons, use objects, load ammo, handle magic items or material components. Simic's can maybe do somatic components.

Did anyone ever play the old TSR game Star Frontiers? I know, I'm old, but the Hadozee are Yazarians, the Plasmoids are Dralasites, and the Thri-Kreen are the Vrusks. Bit confused on the thri-kreen greatsword+offhand attack strategy. At best, you can do two-weapon fighting with a one-handed non-heavy weapon. Is there something I missed?

You'd be correct. You are able to hold a greatsword and two light weapons, but because of the wording of two-weapon fighting and subsequent duel wielder feat, you can't actually attack with them. (I don't have the text in front of me, but it sounds like it's the same wording as the UA version)

You can't attack with the 2 handed and light but the Light and Shield with a Light in the secondary does work (or 1handed+shield+light with the feat since secondary arms does specify light). Honestly it's only an issue at lower lvls when an extra d6+ability (with fighting style) might drop something and honestly Polearm Master is probably better combat wise at all tiers (especially once you get Great Weapon Master) but hey... probably a solid Rogue Race... get one lvl of Fighter use that Two-Weapon/shield combo all you want.

was thinking the same. a common misconception is, that for dual wield bonus action attacks you only need a light offhand weapon. but you also need to make an attack with a light weapon with your action. i guess he got that one wrong. but what you still can do is having a shield in your normal off-hand a wand in your normal main hand and a light weapon in your small main hand. basically simulating one half of the war caster feat.

Two-Weapon Fighting When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you're holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you're holding in the other hand. You don't add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative. If either weapon has the thrown property, you can throw the weapon, instead of making a melee attack with it. If you need both extra arms to hold a single light weapon, then you no longer one-hand it, thus you can not engage in two-weapon fighting with these combinations: 2H + 1 light weapon 1 light weapon + shield + light weapon

Remember, to two-weapon fight without the dual wielding feat, all weapons involved need to have the light property. With that in mind, Thri-kreen eldritch knight with shadowblade, shield, light weapon, focus can be nice. Or you know, free hand for grapples

For Thri-Keen, I would personally rule that they can use their secondary arms to help hold heavy weapons, giving you the option to dual-wield heavy weapons if you so wish .....That is if dual wielding was actually good XD

More combos: -Bladesingers Autognomes can use mending as 1 of their attacks and heal in battle, this is from *Pack Tactics* bladesinger video. -Tree Kreen can use a rapier + shield and a hand crossbow, all at the same time. I flavor the crossbow bolts as trowing knifes.

@@g80gzt Keen Mind, Last point ,You can accurately recall anything you have seen or heard within the past month. Phantom Rouge ability, Whispers of the Dead 3rd-level Phantom feature Echoes of those who have died cling to you. Whenever you finish a short or long rest, you can choose one skill or tool proficiency that you lack and gain it, as a ghostly presence shares its knowledge with you. You lose this proficiency when you use this feature to choose a different proficiency that you lack. If you watch DnD Shorts other vids in one he states both of these allow you to cycle a new ghost every day to gain all skill and proficiency's. So Phantom Rouge ability and the Astral Elf trance ability sound very similar. That's why I asked a question, but to answer yours, yes I have read about Keen mind feat but no I did not read the trance ability as my books have yet to be delivered so I'm working with 1/2 the information. :)

@@TheOverconfidentGamer His short about Phantom Rogue's is also his own personal take on it, and is definitely not RAW because the Phantom Rogue's ability explicitly states you lose the proficiency when you choose a different one. The ghostly presence is supernaturally imparting knowledge onto you. Who knows, maybe the ghost of a chef is hanging around you that day, guiding you as you cook which gives you proficiency with Cook's Utensils. It's not like every time you finish a rest, the ghost told you everything you possibly need to know to be proficient at the end of that rest and you just happen to remember it until you change to a different proficiency. If you take that Cook's Utensils, only cook a medium rare steak, then switch to Persuasion the next day, did the ghosts tell you how to bake that cake you want to make the next day? Or bake a flan? Or make eggs benedict? The feature says they cling to you, so it's obviously not a one and done "I know all the knowledge to be proficient with this tool and I will never forget any recipes or techniques for an entire month because a ghost explained literally everything there is to know about cooking at the end of a rest" type deal.

Tri-Keen extra arms are kind of busted. Crossbow expert builds can now hold a shield AND have an extra normal arm for a rapier or something. The two Tri-Keen arms can handle a hand crossbow, ammo, material and somatic spell components, and object interactions, leaving you two free regular arms.

I thought that the rule for dual weilding attacks was that both weapons had to have the LIGHT feature. Despite the name, light crossbows do not have the light feature. If the dual weapon rule is still in effect, you're talking about using two hand crossbows. You can still hold the shield though. The fourth hand -- your suggestion of holding a focus on spell components is good. I would use it to hold maybe a parrying dagger or when a target gets too close or a Wand of Smiles for style points.

Broken thri-kreen build? Step 1: 11 levels of psi warrior fighter for 3 attacks, the d10 psi dice, action surge, and more. Step 2: Take a 3 level dip into astral self monk. Granting you 2 more arms. Step 3: drop the last 6 into glory paladin. Gaining divine smite, the aura of protection, and access to the enhance ability spell. Step 4: pick up sentinel, and pole-arm master as a feat. Summon your arms, hold two light weapons of your choice in lower arms, hold pole arm weapon in main hands. You can now stop the enemy from getting within 10 feet. You can attack 7 times with your arms. One unarmed astral strike with a ten foot reach (flurry of blows), four swings with the pole arm, and two light weapon attacks with your small arms. You can add your smites and psi warrior damage to the weapon attacks. Two 2nd level smites 3d8 each (6d8), four 1st level smites 2d8 each (8d8), one psi strike 1d10 force damage plus a strength save or they’re prone/ pushed back 10 feet, one unarmed attack 1d4. Plus all weapon damage and other bonuses. Between psi warrior abilities and channeled divinity you also have a ton of damage mitigation too.

Yeah, I'll allow Hadozee with the change that they to be at least 10' above the ground/floor to start a glide. So sure, climb a vertical suface and then do it, but no jump glides. Still awesome.

For a long time, we've been playing with the house rule that Warforged can be healed with Mend, but the restriction is that it only works x times per day for 1d6 hit points per use. That seemed very strong for us even with the restriction. The Autognome rule seems way less restrictive than what we were doing.
