One thing I like about Homecoming is that the narrative feels similar to 2 in that the monsters are based on that of the player's personal demons and both protagonists ended up killing the people they loved either on purpose or an accident with them eventually overcoming those problems and finding closure in their lives.

I would argue tho that it's closer to comparing grapefruits to oranges, homecoming doesn't have an interesting protag, doesn't have the side cast, isn't as forward with it's themes, and messes up a lot of continuity. I'm not saying this out of soite, Homecoming is actually my favorite western game and it easily had the most potential. I just think it tried to draw straws to be closer to 2 when it would have been much better if it stuck to it's guns and hit more on a unique perspective

It being similar to 2 is more to its detriment though, it was clear the western developers wanted to capture the same magic in a bottle and went the wrong way about it. It was basically 'Silent Hill 2 but with less interesting characters, continuity errors, visuals taken from the 2006 film oh and Pyramid Head/nurses galore!'

I opted to play Silent Hill 1 on an old CRT with the original PS1 when I heard about the SH2 remake. I had never played a SH game before, and now ive played 1-4. The "downside" of the "bad" graphics really holds no weight for me. If anything it added to the experience. The less you understand something, the scarier it is, and I feel like if I had just emulated the game and had high textures, I would have been less immersed into the experience, being able to see the actual seams of the texture wrapping and fully make out the features of the monsters skins. Leaving that all up to more of an interpretation makes the horror come from your own mind. The archaic setup, with the fuzz of the crt and shifting of the dingey polygons, was like the rust of that world was penetrating my living room. When fighting the lizard, every time he roared the speakers of my CRT rattled inside their box, as if the beast was truly lurking behind the humming screen. Look around the horror gaming sphere today and you will see plenty of modern games aiming to emulate that era of graphics. "Low end" graphics are never a bad thing if they are backed up by a solid vision abd art style. Silent Hill 1 is still my favorite Silent Hill game, and one of my top 5 games of all time. I love it.

As usual I like homecoming much more than everybody else it seems. I think it has some of the coolest monster design and downright the best bosses in the franchise. More than any other two and three are still my favorites though. And I can now include both versions of Silent Hill 2 in that statement. The remake is excellent

My favorite is the fourth one(the room). The opening scene is really good. Ghosts design are great, gameplay is a bit meh and some frustrating issues here and there. I know my opinion might be a bit bias cuz i did not enjoy old SH as much due to shitty port.

I only ever played the 1st 3 games and 2 won for me by a million miles. 1 & 3 were too scary too soon but 2 has this perfect slow set up where you gradually get into more disturbing parts of the game. 1 was very good but 3 put me off and scared me too quick I just didnt finish it. I had no interest in the story either to be honest. What I love about all 3 games is the soundtracks they are beyond amazing.

Origins is actually my favorite post-trilogy game in the series, even if the story and connection back to SH1 is sort of dog water. I don't really take it seriously in terms of plot connections but if you look at it as a game on it's own I think it was a good survival horror game with solid level design and creative puzzles. Plus it's pretty incredible that the game was pulled together as well as it was in 1 year of development. They were on a severe time limit because the original build by a different branch of climax was canned.

I found Downpour to be less enjoyable than games lower on the list. Shattered Memories was a good puzzle game, but not a horror game in the slightest. At least Homecoming and Origins had breif moments decent enemy designs with decent story symbology. Outside of story, Downpour was boring for me. Everything else was spot on for this list.

This is a hard one lol, I notice all of these are ps2 games, gives me an idea to do a ps2 survival horror game ranking video but I have also never played Haunting ground or rule of rose. In terms of scariest I would say fatal frame 1 and 2 then alone in the dark and then silent hill 4. All are classics though

I listed only PS2 games because I like the atmosphere and camera angles of older survival horror games, and their graphics hold up really well. Rule of Rose seems to have a lot of negative reviews on Metacritic, so maybe it's a bad game.

I agree that SH2 is the best one, but I disagree with your other rankings. I think SH1 should have been number1, and also SH3. If it doesn't make sense, then you're right. I think they all are very good games and I have hard time to decide which one I like the most. I think they all have their own strengths. I bought my first PC just prior to Win 95 hitting the market. Silent Hill 3 was released what 2003? I bought the PC release of the game then anyway. And also the PS2 version. (which I actually sold last year for something like £60 used on ebay.) First thing I've done on EVERY single computer that I've bought since then has been to reinstall Silent Hill 3 on it. It needs a no-cd .exe installed to make it work these days. But I feel no guilt adding that my bona-fide install of the game. so.. whatever lol. So yeah. SH3 for me.. SH2 is good. But I just (and it's fractions of a percent here) prefer SH3 personally.

If you take out nostalgia the list is 1423 from best to worst, 1 has the best music, best characters, best story, best sound design, best area design it’s perfect the only things 2 and 3 have over it are being ps2 games which allowed for better graphics, and enemy design. 4 gets the most hate because unlike 2 and 3 it did what 1 did to break away from RE games and made a whole new take for the series and made entirely new mechanics also Walter Sullivan is a much better character than anyone from 2 and 3 not named the dead body of harry mason. 2 is better than 3 because at least they made an original story not just a weird sequel to 1

​@bubba418 Origins is a pointless prequel that just messes with the first Silent Hill continuity in regards to Alessa's soul splitting being what started the nightmarish other worlds existence in the town, and just adds unnecessary details to characters like Lisa and Dr Kauffman. And Travis' story is just not particularly remarkable in comparison to other Silent Hill protagonists, Downpour just did its own thing and flipped whats Silent Hill 2 did - gave us a protagonist we go in assuming is a terrible person only to find out he was a good everyday man who lost his son in the most horrible way instead of what James starts and ends as.
