The biggest disservice that the book world does to SK is consider every book of his “horror”
@Thecatladybooknook_PennyD2 жыл бұрын
Yep exactly. He did horror then tried different genres.... not horror other than the horror of man.

He needs to stick to the horror genre...that's where he does his best work, undisputedly!
@baalrogg2 жыл бұрын
@@sueture King has fantastic horror novels, but he has a LOT of non-horror that's absolutely top class as well. If he only wrote horror we wouldn't have Shawshank Redemption, The Body (the movie Stand by Me),11/22/63, the Dark Tower series, Dead Zone, The Talisman, the Bill Hodges trilogy (Mr. Mercedes) - and a number of others. King's storytelling is unbelievably versatile, and I agree that it's a shame most people only view him as a horror author.
@bradleymcdonald62732 жыл бұрын
Any story that deals with Fear, shock and disgust should be considered Horror... Which is any realistic story about Life ... It doesn't have to involve supernatural monsters And that was my problem with the Horror genre I avoided them because I thought they wouldn't deal with themes I'd find interesting... I was wrong... They are just tragedies and are still very human And funnily enough, i read more references from the Bible in Stephen Kings works than in most other authors I read... Sometimes it will because the character is a crazy lunatic preacher OR sometimes it will be someone grappling with their faith in God... Regardless of whether it's in a positive or negative light, I really enjoy that... Because it's very human And just as many SK readers love to see Dark Tower references... I'm the same way with Biblical Scriptures being quoted/used in fiction... It's rewarding From the 10 books I've read of his so far I am assuming he was raised in a Christian household
@bradleymcdonald62732 жыл бұрын
I haven't read pet semetary But for example, from what I understand with that stories plot It's not just about the undead killing people. That's your first thought when you think of horror... Something evil that kills But really it is a story tackling themes of Death/Loss. About accepting yours and your loved ones mortality ... And it shows the evil that can come from those who don't accept it Lastly I want to say... I believe that the general public believe that Stephen Kings works are Horror in the sense that they glorify evil... But that can't be further from the Truth Evil is only portrayed as Evil in his works... Evil is not placed upon a pedestal and worshipped... I'm never cheering on Evil when reading his novels... He is not a satanic writer
@billkeon8802 жыл бұрын
To be fair, King was not an old man when he wrote Carrie….and apparently he was a teacher (before he switched to being a writer full time) so as a teacher he probably saw a lot of bullying and shaming of students which probably bothered him into writing this story.

For Carrie, you complain that Stephen King was an old man - it was published when he was 26. You make lots of comments about not connecting with older characters or POVs. That’s more about the reader than the writer.

I really do think SK stories hit people differently because, sometimes, where you’re at in your life and/or what’s going on in your life can influence your perception. Sure, it’s that way for a lot of books, but the “when” in your life is significant. Also, if you read a book in the 80s that was written in the 80s it just lands differently because you’re living that same world. 🤷♀️

The Bill Hodges trilogy produced one of his best female characters, Holly, who keeps popping up and sounds like she's getting her own book...take my money now! The fact that you've read 19 Stephen King books and did not know the significance of the number 19 is amazing. If you ever read THE DARK TOWER you will know how important the number 19 is. This is an awesome coincidence. Let me give an example: In THE SHINING there is a room numbered 217. King said if you spilt 2 from 17 and add them together you get 19. In DUMA KEY, a lot of names are made up of 19 letters. There are many examples but I won't say because of potential spoilers. But do keep an eye out for the number 19 in Stephen King books (especially if you'll read THE DARK TOWER series.) I love your Stephen King content the most. This video was a treat. Thank you, Gabby.

Little sad with some of your ratings For instance I personally love Carrie I am someone who got their period very early in my life and knew nothing about it like Carrie I didn’t have a breakdown in a shower room I was actually pretty calm But I did think something was wrong with me As well as I am the odd one out in my school dressing very boyish and liking stuff like horror which most people find weird (I have been called a psycho or sociopath a couple times) And yes Sure you can say it’s weird that a guy wrote about a girls period But one He wasn’t old He was 26 I believe when he wrote Carrie Two It doesn’t matter what gender writes about stuff like that From what I know his wife helped him a bit so he wasn’t going off of things he heard or stuff Personally I don’t understand the complaints of “oh a man wrote it so that makes it weird” It’s a natural thing that happens to girls so yk It’s not like “it’s rare to get a period” no everyone gets it at some point The whole “males can’t write things about female characters” is stupid I write stories myself and most characters are males and I am a female If that’s the case with males can’t write females than females shouldn’t write about males It’s just something I wish you worded differently or had a better excuse cause honestly that’s not a good excuse and it’s a bit of an annoying one But of course I respect your opinion I do agree the religious stuff made me uncomfortable as a non-religious person myself But I just wish you worded it differently As for Doctor Sleep I personally loved Doctor Sleep the movie I have not read the book From what I heard I think a lot of people liked the movie more than the book but honestly I wish people would hate less on it cause a lot of people I met doesn’t read the book or watch the movie cause a lot of people hate it Of course I respect your opinion again! I just liked Doctor Sleep the movie I like Rose the Hat as an antagonist cause we need more female horror antagonist I haven’t actually read the Shining yet it’s gonna be one of the last books I read cause that book is thick- but I’m excited to read it than read Doctor Sleep Also once again about how he writes women I’ve seen many women writers write their female characters like that In fact a author I love writes female characters a lot like that If it’s a opinion on it’s a man writing it again I would reword that or try to find a better excuse cause once again it shouldn’t matter if it’s a male or female writing the characters Respect your opinion It’s just reword it a bit better Other than that great video!

While reading Misery, once I realised that the novel within the novel is actually irrelevant to the story, I started skipping them entirely. I mean for the most part I still know what the story was because Paul and Annie discuss the plot several times anyway...

I am currently reading 11.22.63 (loving it!!) & then IT as my July challenge, Stephen King books. The 2 books will have a combined total of about 2000 pages, about 5 of my normal length books!!

My top 5 books: 1) Different Seasons 2) Skeleton Crew 3) Night Shift 4) The Stand 5) 11/22/63 Stephen King's strength is in his short fiction, not his novels. He has a well earned reputation for beginning a story, but not finishing to any satisfaction. I wonder if that's a reflection on his love life?

Misery will always hold a special place in my heart because it’s the first book my now fiancé and I read together

As someone who hasn't read any Steven King but want to, this tier rank is kinda helpful. Time to watch your vlogs. Please do more. Btw, did you know Carrie is a musical as well?

I used to listen to the musical all the time

Lmao I love how you got ahead of the King stans who would inevitably leave ridiculously rude comments below with the “hold your breath” warning 😂 I’m not the biggest fan of King but there’s a few classics I’ll still probably get to eventually! So far The Shining has been my favorite and Revival was pretty good too

The Green Mile is definitely worthy of a vlog

I’m defiantly in the need for a gabby vlog with Stephen king books and you should also watch Stand By Me and give us your thoughts on it compared to the book! 😊❤️❤️

I love The Shining book, John Torrance is was more likable in the book which makes what happens super tragic. Jack Nicholson is not a bad actor at all but he has absolutely no subtlety or nuance in my opinion. And even though I love Shelly Duvall, Wendy in the book is a much stronger mother to me. This is just my opinion of course. I don’t hate the movie, there is definitely merit to preferring the movie over the book. I think the book just hit me greater

King's 11/22/63 got me to read him after dismissing King for years. I was duly impressed. You won't be happy to hear this, Gabby, but the Mr. Mercedes trilogy were my next best favourites. I am going to tackle the Gunslinger books next.

You need to do a podcast like this with your sis on Stephen King films. Compare to books you've read??
