@marcospatricio82836 ай бұрын
And the best (or worst) part is that this seems to be a relatively recent development, with even Walder Frey's grandfather being a sorta decent man. They distinguished themselves during Maegor's reign and the dance, their loyalty to the Blackfyres is almost touching, and we're given no reason to doubt their commitment against the Hoares during the conquest.
@Bellbeaker147 ай бұрын
About House Caron: GRR often uses “Song” and “Singing” to describe the clashing of blades in battle, and considering that the Carons are Marcher Lords it’s fitting. Still not a great battle cry, but it makes sense - there is no song so “sweet” as a Caron singing, or a Caron “singing” on the battlefield
@marcospatricio82836 ай бұрын
In their context, I think it's actually quite intimidating. The Marchers are dangerous not because of occupations, but simply raids. Sane raiders (the Iron Islanders are just weird) want easy targets they can slaughter, and technically win if their enemy refuses to engage/disengages. A motto that's basically "we don't run away from a fight" can be quite intimidating for people who very much want you to.

I've always understood the Greyjoy's "We do not sow" to mean they're proud to be thieves. They don't grow their own food. I remember Baelon saying "We are Ironborne, we take what is ours.", but in reality, they take what is somebody else's. What a lowlife flex: we're not good at anything, so we just reap our neighbor's hard work through v!olence. We live only by leeching off of other people, like a parasite.

There's two things to address here. First is the notion of work and dignity. In medieval Europe (matter of fact, in numerous different societies), work is seen as undignified, and not having to work is seen as something to brag about. The words appeal to that. Second is the framing. Humans love when things are implied, specially strength. "Fire and Blood" is cool, "Dragons and Incest" isn't. "Our Blades Are Sharp" is cool, "we're gonna torture you" isn't. "We Are Raiders and Parasites" is shameful, "We Do Not Sow (because we're so strong we can force others to do it)" is.

A note about House Yronwood. Back in the '80s, Eclipse Comics was one of the biggest independant comics publishers. Their Editor-in-Chief was cat yronwode (capitalization hers.) I think it's highly likely that GRRM knew her from Science Fiction and Comics fandom - she was very active even before becoming E-in-C for Eclipse. I don't know if George ever wrote anything for Eclipse, but that is possible as well. So I've always believed that House Yronwood is named after her. Doesn't make the spelling any less stupid, but it does provide some context.

I like the Martell's motto, but it kinda doesn't make sense when you remember they existed thousands of years before the Targaryens ever showed up to conquer. @samuelgriffin18337 ай бұрын

It could be referring to their exile from the north too, but I agree with you that those are lame words. I can't think of a specific phrase right now, but something in the lines of "we endure and survive in hardship" would suit them. They are exiles that made a new home, remained a powerhouse in the most unstable of the seven kingdoms for time immemorial, their faith survived the death of their weirwood, and the raven is an animal known for enduring or even thriving in hardship trough cunning and and resilience.
