This Bless Your Rank made me miss my Gram, who was my roommate in her later years until she passed away in 2011. We kept a cute crystal ashtray as the candy dish and she would keep it filled with all sorts of GOOD candy like Jolly Ranchers, Peppermints, Butterscotch, Now & Laters, Buckeyes. She got the candy from the bins at the grocery store and would fill up a bag of different kinds of candy; being mindful of things that not only she liked, but others as well. She would make up little candy bags to take to her friends at dialysis for the week and give me a candy bag to take to my students for the week. She would always make sure to buy me a few Pixy Stix. My mom used to buy those little mints (I think they were called "after dinner mints") when I was little, especially if people were coming over. Some restaurants used to have them by the cash register, too - in a dish with a little serving spoon. Imagine the horror of that today, allowing people to just reach in and take some or having everyone use the same little spoon to scoop a few out of the bowl!

Omgosh this reminds me of childhood. My dad always had those, not my grandma. My grandma just had mints, grandpa had peppermint, cinnamon, root beer barrels and butterscotch and was known as “the candy man,” everywhere he went, he’d pull out his bag of candy and people would flock to him lol. Like seriously people, you can get these for a dollar but they’d just wait for my sweet grandpa to let them take as many as they wanted. My grandma passed away on feb 15 then my grandpa on feb 18. Thank you for reminding me of them... sweet sweet memories :)

My maternal grandma typically didn't have a lot of candy around, but it was usually the jelly fruit slices or the jelly spearmints, both of which were pretty weird. Either that or the sugar free hard candies and peppermints, all mixed up in a bowl. My paternal grandma, on the other hand, had the BEST candy I have ever had in my life...chocolate fruit sticks! They were bright and fun and I haven't had one in 30 years, though I have only ever seen them in old fashioned catalogs. Mom, on the other hand, LOVES 'granny candy', especially Butterscotch!
@121dough5 жыл бұрын
btw....the devil's candy is my favorite...licorice whips forever. If you want the twisted candy, ask your Uncle and when he pulls out the bag of Circus Peanuts and offers you one, run the other way. I don't know what it is about them but one bite and your teeth would ache....somehow you instantly had a cavity...sheesh
