March wrap up?! He did catch himself 😅. The cycle is continuing - I’m watching this on 4 hours of sleep as a break from studying, trying not to fall asleep. 👍Looking forward to the rapid reviews 🙂

We love an unhinged, sleep deprived wrap-up 😂 The constantly getting the months mixed up was honestly so relatable As for my own April Wrap-Up Favourite Read: Sir Callie and the Champions of Helston by Esme Symes-Smith Worst Read: Lore of the Wilds by Analeaigh Sbrana DNF Read: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

i’m not sure if you’ve read it, but The Son by Philipp Meyer is another family saga historical fiction. I just read it and I really liked it, similar to what you were saying about Pachinko none of the characters were saintly but they all felt real. And it goes pretty deep into Texas history and American Indian culture if that’s interesting to you

If you want to dip your toes more into the thriller/mystery genre, I highly recommend “The Paris Apartment” or “The Guest List” by Lucy Foley. Especially the audiobook versions on Libby! Both have family with secrets themes to them. Would love to hear your thoughts on one of these books!

The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang is what I'd recommend if you are looking for a family saga. It is a high fantasy stand-alone that is actually character focused, but family dynamics (especially husband-wife, mother-son) are still an important part of the story. It is also inspired by Japanese culture and it explores themes like grief which I think you might enjoy as well.

My absolute favorite of April was House of Hollow. Dark, gothic, and just a good time all around. The narrator’s voice made it even better.

Matt Haig actually does have middle grade books! They are christmassy focused though - he wrote a trilogy that starts with a boy called christmas (which has also been adapted into a nice family friendly christmas film). I love a good contemporary ya romance and loved the cursebreaker series by brigid kemmerer so clearly I need to read call it what you want!

I think you should also read Brigid Kemmerer's Love Letters To The Lost, in case you already haven't.

For books similar to Pachinko (which I also loved), I would recommend Peach Blossom Spring and The Mountains Sing. Both also center around Asian history and follow a family across generations. The Mountains Sing took me a bit longer to get into, it felt just very heavy in the beginning, but I became very invested a bit later on.

Since you liked the dead fathers club I think you’d like city of ghosts by Victoria Schwab. Technically It’s a middle grade book but it doesn’t feel like it. I loved it and I’m an adult. It’s about a girl who can see ghosts but so much more. I think you’d really like it. Since you also liked masters of death I think you’d like her other book called one for my enemy. It’s a Romeo and Juliet retelling that is so good! It does a good job of being a retelling while also being diffrent enough from the original that it’s not just the same thing over again. I liked it so much that i’m excited to read more by her. I think you might like it as well.

Matt Haig wrote A Boy Called Christmas - a middle grade father christmas origin story. It's cosy but adventurous. I recommend!

House of the Spirit follows a family which it’s still very heavy but it has a lot of drama similar to a Tella Novella and also has historical politics in Chile

I read Weyward in April too and it's my favorite book of the year so far. It definitely had heavy content, but i loved all three stories and the way they connected even in three different time periods. It was so atmospheric and the witchy element was actually my favorite that I've read. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I loved The Humans by Matt Haig, but hated The Midnight Library. Adding your recommendation to my Want to Read list!

Jessie if you love the family saga vibe, you should check out The House of the Spirits by Isabelle Allende. It's not a short novel but like Pachinko you move through the generations of this family, in this case it's set in Chile and has elements of magical realism too.

I recently finished reading “Beasts of a Little Land” by Juhae Kim. It’s giving a very similar vibe as Pachinco since it also reflects on Japanese colonial rule over Korea. I think you’d love the book:)

I had a pretty good reading month with lots of good books. I finally got to All's Well which I loved. The Familiar was also excellent and lowkey an almost favourite as well. I found another almost favourite that is lowkey a guilty pleasure but I don't know what to tell you it really worked for me and that was Extasia. I read The Complete Persepolis which I enjoyed greatly (the movie was a big deal for me as a kid). I reread a few favourites, aka Melmoth by Sarah Perry and Ariel by Sylvia Plath, and I found a new favourite in Roarings From Further Out by Algernon Blackwood. I am very happy with the books I read. It is a shame this month began with a dnf (One Dark Window).

Books similar to Pachinko/in that hist. fiction family drama vein: a majority of Natasha Lester's recent books. So "The Paris Orphan," "The Paris Seamstress," "The Paris Secret," "The Riviera House," and "The Disappearance of Astrid Bricard." "The Three Lives of Alix St. Pierre" by the same author is also good but it's not as much in the family drama vein. All of these books also take place within the same time periods (all are 2-3 POVs, and dual timelines), but these books aren't a series (all stand alones!). You do see characters making occasional appearances in books that aren't their own book/story.

April was my worst reading month this whole year, I reached my goal in march so I wasn't tempted to read? i know its not about the amount it was just that tiny bit of a push I sometimes needed, I also did have exams and just a lot on life so I'm gonna blame it on that instead...

Yeah, I loved Bloodmarked, had a blast reading it, but even I had to admit it dragged a bit in the middle and i got tired of Sel and Bree having tje same argument over and over again. Like, bro, i get its your job to protect her, but you're also pretty mich denying her all agency. If you liked Pachinko and wanna read more about everything between Korea and Japan, I highly recommend Grass by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim and The Court Dancer by Kyung-Sook Shin. Theyre heart-breaking and hard to read, but also very good.
