Van dijk is a step above than every single one of these CBs. The fact that he is playing with kids in the backline like Quansah and Bradley and 3rd choice full back Gomez and also 2nd choice Goalie behind him and still be so dominant just shows how beast of a Cb he is. Truly an all time great.

That season he lost out to Messi in the Ballon d'Or by like 6 or 7 points was the most impressive defensive season I've ever seen by a CB. The craziest stat about VVD's dominance was that he had a 3 year stretch where he never lost at Anfield.... 3 Years... He was basically out there replicating Mourinho's 1st Chelsea team. That back line of Trent, Matip, VVD, Robertson with Allisson behind them might genuinely have been the best 'Back 5' in the history of the league. Every single one of them was the best player in the world in their position for 18-24 months.

There's a difference between a pairing and as individuals. Vvd has had different partners this season as well has a different keeper behind him. He single handedly dragged us to a trophy with kids around him. No other cb in the world would be able to do that. Liverpool play more risky football than arsenal putting him in harder situations. I think the issue with mentioning the spurs centre backs has been injuries and sending offs. Romero has been sent off a few times and Ven has been injured alot and that knocks points off. Gabriel has been better than Saliba this season and has just been insane and i say that as a city fan. Honestly Dias hasn't been amazing this season its been Akanji again.

Schar has genuinely been one of Newcastle's best players this season before his injury, incredibly consistent defensively (even when we've lost it's never usually been because of him or his mistake), his passing ability is so underrated and the fact he's been scoring regularly this season too (he's joint second for goals scored for defenders), he's honestly so overlooked Most other fans mentioned Botman but Schar has been immense

Gabriel is currently a better athletic defender than VVD, but VVD's leadership, aura, the confidence he inspires, and how so many of our goals he is performs the assist for the assist. Plus his ability to come up clutch goals, assists or defensive actions is what just gives him the edge over Gabriel. For a one off game, like a Champion's League final you'd take Gabriel, but for a Premier League season you'd take VVD.
