The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) was formed 20 years ago, giving the college football a definitive title game for the first time. To celebrate 20 years of championship games, ESPN Analytics calculated overall, offensive and defensive ratings to find the strongest national champions. The model includes all FBS teams and approximately 15,000 games to establish teams' strength to return a rating measured in points above the average team. Brad Edwards counts down the best CFB teams that championships since 1998:

95 Nebraska wins that as they are the only program to go undefeated back to back (in the last 60 years), they ranked #1 in offense and #1 in defense, led the league in rushing and passing yards and touchdowns, led the league in offensive efficiency. They broke all the records on offense including allowing 0 sacks on offense and only allowing 5 returnable punts all season. They also broke the record for largest margin of victory for a season at 38 points, and their lowest margin of victory was 14.

Miami was 38-0 and hadnt lost in nearly 3 yrs when the Buckeyes beat them. Miami has never been the same that pass interference against Gamble was 100% interference. But the play before that to Jenkins was on 4th and 14 and the Buckeyes converted. In that game Clarett had the best hustle play ever when he stripped Sean Taylor on the sideline. Taylor was the best player on that field and Clarett steped up to do that changed the game. definately not #21 that was ridiculous. I ve seen the reply of that game no less than 100 times.

The thing about '01 Miami is they had what very few if any teams had. They had playmakers on the offense that could score from anywhere but the defense with that secondary could do the same thing. Just an other universe type team.

Trojans were on a 34 game win streak which started a week after their loss in a 3OT to California in 2003 and it continued until they lost to Vincent Young and the Longhorns in the national title game in 2006. I agree, despite that controversial loss to Ohio State in the BCS title game, they've produced the who's who of great talent for the NFL. Plus, that team won the title back in 2001 and many expects (minus ESPN) have them as one of the all time great teams because of their talent.

I'm wondering where the 2018 Clemson Tigers would be ranked in this list after a 15-0 season. Obviously the Miami team should be number 1, but is Clemson number 2? Clemson beat the brakes off an Alabama team that many were calling the greatest team of all time going into that meeting. Clemson also won all 11 games that Trevor Lawrence started and finished by 20+ points. This includes a 42-10 win in the ACC championship, 30-3 vs Notre Dame in the CFB playoffs, and 44-16 vs Alabama in the national championship game. I believe Clemson should be number 2 on this list; however, I'm biased being a life long Clemson fan. I don't trust my own judgment to be accurate, so any opinions on this would be appreciated. The 2001 Hurricanes and the 2008 Gators should be 1 and 2. Can you imagine Tim Tebow’s high powered offense with Aaron Hernandez and Percy Harvin against the greatest defense in NCAA history led by Ed Reed and Sean Taylor? This would be a battle of the greatest defense and offense. I think the Hurricanes win because their offense is better than Florida’s defense but it would be a legendary.

this is a lazy list.. they took point deferential throughout the season and 2005 Texas had the largest difference. They played 2 teams within the top ten and one team ranked 24th. they beat the brakes off of all of their opponents except #4 Ohio State (25-22) That Texas team was no where near the 1999-2002 Miami teams.
