Ranking The Albums: Juliana Hatfield

This is my first video as the Internet badly needed another middle-aged nerd joining the vinyl community to talk about his rekkids. I rank my top ten Juliana Hatfield albums, since Sea of Tranquility hasn't and will never get around to it. Oh, my name is Chris even though I think I talked for almost 20 minutes without saying so.

Julianna has never gotten the credit she deserves for some great music! and she can rock when she wants. I lived in north Carolina when she was in Blake Babies and saw her live when she first went solo. I always have a soft spot for "Bed"--totally raw record.

Yes, this is certainly true. She should be viewed as one of the great singer-songwriters of her generation. As to my rankings, they are pretty fluid and I bet if I redid it today there would be some changes. The new rekkid "Blood" would be pretty near the top.

In Exile Deo is a stellar album - I would have had it somewhere in the top 10. I probably would have had it where you placed Juliana's Pony. Nice list.

I am pausing this at 7.26 to say that Total System Failure is insanely amazing, I get that Beautiful creature is most likely more well liked, I love Daniel, but the rest seems like pop fill, much like in exile deo, TSF is outstanding! Ten foot pole, is one of the best songs I have ever heard

A buddy and I tried to see her in Denver in the early 2000s. She was playing at a bar and we figured there was no need to get tickets because we figured no one knew who she was. We were wrong. Couldn't get in. The only album of hers is Only Everything. Your top two are on my wantlist and I'll probably grab them on CD. Interesting flag - I visited the Third Man store in Detroit when I visited there a few years back. More novelties than rekkids ... LOL. Cheers! Tom

Hey, thanks for becoming my first subscriber. There will be a video later today celebrating that massive milestone (i.e. I did the jazz vinyl tag despite not owning all that many jazz rekkids or knowing much about the genre). As far as Juliana, I've seen her live three times (not counting livestreams). I lived in Colorado for much of the 1990s and saw her at the Ogden Theater in Denver in probably 1995 (Only Everything tour). I was gone by the early 2000s so I wasn't at whatever venue she was playing then. Most recently, saw her in Nashville at the Basement East in 2016 as part of a very limited Blake Babies reunion. Phoebe Bridgers opened that night and she's certainly blown up since then. Jeff Buckley opened some of her shows in 1995, but not the one I went to. I missed the 2020 tour of hers just before you know. I've been to the Third Man store in Nashville--it's certainly weird. I also saw a concert in their basement once and that will probably be in a future video.

i'm always saying 'rekkid' and spelling it this way too. thought i was the only one...lol. here's one fer ya: 'numbuh'. as in a british band live, announcing "here's anuthu nyew numbuh"...i see you have a 'minor alps' picture there. yet another juliana collaboration. it's tough to find a cool tee shirt with her. i've seen a few and they weren't worth having. yours seem pretty neat. on my channel i am creating a list of some of my favorite songs by her. i tend to go for the up tempo rockers the most. i just started and i haven't even been about half way through her catalog so far!...thanks for the review and keep it between the ditches.

Yeah, the chesspiece t-shirt was from the JH3 reunion album and is one of the best ones. I'll probably do a list of favorite Juliana songs at some point as well. I'll check out your channel.

I'm a long time fan of Juliana Hatfield. I was lucky to see her 2x in her early days. In 1991 w/ the Blake Babies by accident when her band were opening for my friends band Roots Round Up. Then in 1992 during her 'Hey Babe' solo tour opening for The Lemonheads ('Shame About Ray tour) & yes she did perform twice w/ the Lemonheads.

Has Hatfield EVER had a low period, a weak album (or even more than one weak song on an album)? She's arguably the most highly consistent artist I've ever heard.

"Landlord" is the best on the Police album. It's raw, it's funny, and the song is even more apt today. I ~~~hated~~~ ONJ and all that late 1970s pop that was inflicted on me, the garbage my female sibling was listening to (Manilow, Beegees, Streissand, Bay City Rollers, etc.). Ugh. Hatfield's covers made me listen to those ONJ songs with fresh ears and appreciate them - both the covers, and the originals.

@@RekkidTalk The only other band I can think of as consistently good across their ENTIRE catalogue is one you've probably never heard of: Sloan, from Canada. They have put out thirteen albums over the same time as Hatfield (1992-present) and are as reliably great.

Total System Failure is a terrible record, except for "Ten Foot Pole" which is a great angsty song. Only Everything is my #3, How To Walk Away my #2, and Hey Babe is the #1 winner for me - a flat out Indie classic, and would have made a stellar Blake Babies record.
