A fellow Aussie here. I am a big fan of John Farnham and, as you know, here in Australia he is a living legend. It's a shame his three LRB albums are the lowest ranked albums. Maybe he didn't suit the band as well as Glen did.

Great episode gentlemen! When you first hear the guitars kick in at the very beginning of The Night Owls it is an immediate hook and reels you in. Those two late 70's albums are pure excellence and I have been listening to those non-stop since released back then. The bands Pilot, America or J. Geils Band would be cool bands for a ranking show. You don't hear too much about those groups very often these days!

I can't believe i missed this one. LRB is one of the most underrated and oft-forgotten bands of all time. I graduated in 1989, and a friend of mine pulled out their greatest hits on cassette. With the exception of two songs that didn't chart in the U.S., i remembered all of the others from my elementary school years. They're among my favorite bands.

Really enjoyed this video. LRB are a band that never seem to get their due over the years. They put out a lot of great music and were one of those rare vocal harmony bands who could re-create their studio sound live. I only got to see them once on “The Net” tour with John Farnham on vocals, but they were really good and rocked a lot harder than I expected. I generally agree with your album rankings, although I might put “Playing To Win” a bit higher up. It was one of their hardest rocking albums and I think is quite good for the most part. I am a bit surprised there was no mention of the current status of the band and it’s various legal battles. Wayne Nelson leads the current official Little River Band with no original members. Meanwhile Birtles, Shorrock & Goble have their own band in Australia who are not allowed to use the LRB name, but perform the songs. They released an excellent live album called “Full Circle” which IMO is essential for any LRB fans. The Wayne Nelson version of the band has also released live and studio albums of new music. It is also interesting that in other parts of the world John Farnham is a huge star and has a very successful solo career, though he remains pretty much unknown in the U.S. Anyway……….great video!

I'm from canton ohio. We had like 5 fantastic record stores, the best was a mom and pop store called Quanset Hut. I worked for a record distributor for a petty big chain called Camelot Music Honestly, when ifirst worked there, theyhad an employee discount of 40% ,the warehouse had an amazing import section mostly from jewel imports. It s hard to remember back and all the parking lots at these stores were full especially holidays were aways packed. The shopping bags were actually manufactured to fit specifically for Lp albums.

Lots to unpack there, couple of quick chart corrections, First Under the Wire made #10 in the US and was platinum there (they were the 1st Aussie band to have gold and platinum albums in the US btw); Reminiscing reached #3 not #35 (which makes more sense, right?!) although Graham Goble maintains that Lady (#10) was actually their biggest seller as a single. John Farnham is a superstar in Australia, the album he made upon leaving LRB (Whispering Jack) is still one of the biggest sellers of all time down under, but even there his LRB stuff flies under the radar. Am not keen on The Net but the other two albums are great to these ears (and, shameless plug alert, I did a 40th anniversary celebration of Playing to Win on my channel this month: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqGUi6V_erB7Z7c - Pete, I doubt Simon and Steven know any LRB, as they never did any business in the UK at all, but having Playing to Win as the 'they made an AOR album???!' segment of a UK Connection mel-rock show would be great some day...!) - for me when Glenn returned it sounded like they were going through the motions, couple of great tracks per album, but nothing like what they had once delivered...anyway, my rankings.... 11. Monsoon (Does sound like LRB but most of the songs are weak and almost every song ends on an extended repeat and fade of the chorus, which is lazy and irritating. Love is a Bridge was a big comeback hit down under tho). 10. The Net (Farnham sounds great but again, the songwriting is lacking on this one for the most part. We Two and You're Driving Me Out of My Mind became their final US hits, but not as big or memorable as the ones that came before) 09. Get Lucky (Bit of an improvement on Monsoon, with Player's Peter Beckett involved with some of the songwriting - he became a member shortly after for a few years). 08. After Hours (Aus version - of the early albums this is the one that doesn't quite stick with me, but nothing much I can put my finger on - Sweet Old Fashioned Man is definitely too country for my tastes, but not a bad song in itself) 07. Time Exposure (First side is near-perfect, dips quite a bit on side two for me) 06. Playing to Win (Does it sound like LRB? Not AT ALL. But the songs - especially Blind Eyes and the title track - are strong) 05. Diamantina Cocktail (Aus version - seems you guys both had the US version in the end given the track titles you were quoting, no idea how half of this and half of After Hours - twice - seemingly made for cohesive albums). 04. No Reins (Graham Goble maintains this is the finest LRB album, I wouldn't quite go that far but he's not far off. Their version of Cold Chisel's When the War is Over is immense (Steve Prestwich of Cold Chisel, and writer of that song, was in the band by this point - Uriah Heap later covered the track on Raging Silence - also produced by Richard Dodd!) 03. Little River Band (It's a Long Way There on it's own is almost enough to make this #1, nevermind the additional songs, but my top two are, for possibly the first time ever, the same as Pete's!) 02. First Under the Wire (Can't add to what you said, perfect apart from By My Side (which isn't awful, just doesn't match the quality all around it) 01. Sleeper Catcher (Yep, classic from top to bottom and George Mcardle's bass is SOOOO good. Isn't a thing I don't like about this album). Great show in any case gents, and I'll ask, because I haven't in a while, that one day you two get on to the Seals and Crofts catalogue, lots of great surprises for you to find in there too, I promise!). JSB.

Little River, the place where they named themselves isn’t too far from me. It’s on the way to Geelong. Also, the current LRB is a total fraud! No original members in the line up, just a cover act. Take ME Home wasn't on the 1st album; and David Brigs didn't play on Days on the Road as that was on the Aussie version of After Hours so it featured Ric Formosa; the guitarist for the 1st album and most of After Hours as well as the orchestral arranger for the 1st five albums. Frank Arthur said he'd talk about the Aussie versions of the albums, but then went on to mentioned all the songs from the American version of Diamantina Cocktail which had songs that actually originally came out on After Hours, and confusing some of the personnel in the process. Another Runaway is another example; written and sung by Birtles w lyrics and guitar by Formosa about how his mom was always moving. That was from 1976 on the Aussie version of After Hours. Same is True for Every Day of my Life. There were also two versions of Take Me Home; one from After Hours w Formosa on guitar and McLaughlin on bass, and the other from Diamantina Cocktail w Briggs on guitar and and MCardle on bass.

Yeah, it might be a ballad, but “Love Is A Bridge” is great. Actually saw them at a club in Kansas City (actually Wayne Nelson’s birthplace) in the early 90’s. Shorrock was back, but Birtles was gone. They actually had Peter Beckett of Player with them, and even had “Baby, Come Back” in the set list. Nailed it. Might be hard to find, but Birtles, Shorrock, and Goble re-formed as BSG in the early 2000’s and released the live Full Circle. Very good and highly recommended.

Unfortunately you didn't experience them. I've had their albums for decades.

Only ranked the first Shorrock era from 1975-1981. Farnham, while technically a good singer, just lacked personality. 1) Time Exposure 2) First Under The Wire 3) After Hours 4) Sleeper Catcher 5) Little River Band 6) Diamantina Cocktail

Diamantina Cocktail at 6? I love how we all hear this stuff differently. A sign of a truly great band!!!
