What happened to the founders, voices and songwriters of Little River Band is a complex story involving not just the rights to the band name but an apathetic market that unknowingly participated in their cancellation.

My biggest disappointment is that I never got to see original LRB. Found out the hard way that what’s touring is not them. To me, only the original voices can bring the songs to life.

I did get to see the band in 1981 with the Time Exposure tour. Little did I know, Glenn would be gone after the tour. I saw Farnham twice. The first time Beeb and Derrick left after the Net tour. In '84, I saw the Playing To Win Tour. That was the last time I saw the band. I always called that the "Last Man Standing" tour. Greaham was the last member of the original lineup.

Thank you, Dean, for all of your research and hard work covering what has transpired with this fantastic band from down under. Your work here has addressed a lot of questions I had about LRB. I became a devoted fan after first hearing their songs on FM radio back around 1976 when I was living in Florida. I immediately went out and bought their debut album and played it all the time, especially Track 1, 'It's A Long Way There'. To me, that song is a rock masterpiece, particularly the guitar work. Fortunately, LRB was doing a U.S. tour around that time, and I went to see the original band in concert in Jacksonville around 1977. What a show! I recall that they had a very lively and energetic stage presence, and their vocal harmonies and musicianship were superb. In retrospect, these guys were like The Beatles of Australia. They cranked out hit after hit. But as happens all too often with gifted bands and musicians, business complications eventually hijacked the unique vibe they were creating on the music scene. Your research proves that out. But as much as I love their catalog, these days I will not waste my time or money to ever attend a concert by the current LRB cover band. Nope, I'd rather throw Side 1 of their debut album on my turntable, kick back with an adult beverage, and bask in the sweet memories of what was a simply amazing period in musical history. Cheers!

@@brettthebassist I guess the 'big three" just assumed LRB would fall apart without them. The problem for this band was, to the general public, they were faceless. Casual fans didn't know their names; they weren't John Paul George and Ringo, or even Davy Micky Peter and Michael. I would think some people at least know the names Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings, and yet these no-names keep doing shows as the Guess Who. Maybe we need a law that once the lead singers and songwriters of a band leave, they should close shop.

I was fortunate to see part of the original lineup twice in 1983 featuring John Farnham replacing Glen Shorrock. It’s really irks me when this kind of crap happens in the music industry. Other groups to suffer similar issues probably include Creedence Clearwater, the Guess Who, and a touring band in Canada called “Trooper” which doesn’t include a single original member. The biggest tragedy I can think of would be , Badfinger. Obviously different issues happened but sure is illustrative of the dark side of the music industry.

An excellent account of the machinations in this unfortunate saga. I'm an Aussie who grew up with these amazing songs. While I was vaguely familiar with the sad trajectory of the 'ownership' issues, I was completely unaware that the band themselves had no idea regarding some of the finer 'business' dealings. Glenn Wheatley must've felt remorseful about the way it all turned out for the band that he championed from the start.

Huge LRB fan in the 70s/80s. Last saw them in concert in CA in the early 90s after Shorrock had gone and returned. At that time, Birtles was out and Goble was no longer touring with them. Peter Beckett was touring with them. Loved both Glenn and John as lead singers. Bought every album in those decades (and through the'90s), wore them out and bought them again. As a vocalist myself, it was the amazing harmony blending of voices that drew me to the band. While Wayne was a serious contributor to that blend for many, many years, I would never pay to see the recent/current iterations of the band because I know that Wayne can't carry that without at least some of the others. On the other hand, I would fly anywhere in the US and pay big money to see Birtles/Shorrock/Goble. Wayne (who was always my favorite member) is just a passenger on the shitty voyage attempting to make a living in his later years as a hired gun. Having said all that, I find your video to be misleading to folks who don't understand the music business. You keep repeating that Housden (the owner of the LRB trademark) and other members (all hired guns) are profiting from music the don't "own the right to". In the US at least, you have the **right** to live perform (under most conditions) any previously released music by any artist AND, you have the right to rerecord that music WITHOUT their permission (with proper attribution and payment to the song writers). Implying they have done things they don't have the *right* to do with this music isn't correct. As other's have noted, they are currently a 'tribute' or 'cover' band and very little more - but they have the right to be that. Having studied it through the years, the LRB legal mess was a combination of poor planning and naivete which ended up with Steve legally the sole owner of the trademark. While Housden is clearly a talented guitarist, his contribution is mostly that of the 'last man standing' in the dominating era of the group. Commenting only on Steve's LRB decision making process in the last couple decades: While acting legally, I think he has done his own pocket book a serious disservice by holding the mark tight rather than working out a licensing agreement that would have allowed a BIG money LRB tour to happen in the US. He should have said "I'll bring a guitar and the mark. Y'all bring those sweet voices and we'll all make a killing and let millions of people enjoy the killer songs that y'all wrote." As it stands, he gets a pittance in comparison by pimping out a 'barely there' cover band to casinos. My take.

Thank you so much for this story. I had NO idea. I was fortunate to have met members of the original LRB years ago. Thanks to this outstanding piece, now I know how to find them.

BSG are legends under any name. The fans know the difference in the sounds when the songs are played. They need to get back out there. Call themselves the Little Cover Band. Make fun of the situation and tear the house down with their talent. One of my favorite bands of all time.

Well known fact that John Farnham was the vocalist after Glen Shorrock left the band and had a further hit with "playing to win" and toured america with the band and John was also managed by wheatly who hocked his house to get Whispering Jack recorded....

great band from Australia, I loved their music, they were and are being cheated out of royalties that are due to them the original members andv writers of the music, music is a cut-throat business where the true artist is always getting screwed, sad story I never knew that this had happened if I did not click on this link listening to their old original music.

I saw a video today of the current lineup, and out of curiosity, checked out their website. Based on their information, you would think the band started with Wayne Nelson in 1980. On the top of the 'About' section, the opening begins with: "The Eagles founding member, the late Glenn Frey, knew what he was saying when he dubbed Little River Band “the best singing band in the world.” The current lineup of LRB takes that accolade to heart each and every time they perform." (For the record, they don't even come close.) Absolutely no mention the founding members by name. I don't begrudge Nelson making a living as a gigging musician. I think Housden was a fine guitarist. As human beings though, they give off the vibes of snake oil salesman. It's nice to know they don't own the songs, but that is cold comfort. They are playing on the public's ignorance. A damned shame. I know a certain portion of the public might not care, but I think those that are aware of the facts beforehand, might be less inclined to shell out money for a ticket. As someone stated below, it is very reminiscent of The Guess Who situation. Many years ago, I walked into a small club where they were playing. The only original member was the drummer. Excellent presentation. More people should see it.

Not a lawyer by any stretch. However, couldn't the original members simply trademark The Little River Band? And then just have the "The" super small in any ads or promos? I mean how many of us already say The Little River Band instead of Little River Band anyway?
@robbiestewart89

No. Because Stephen Housdin already owns the trademark to the name The Little River Band.

By law in the U.S., the band can use “THE LITTLE RIVER BAND featuring Birtles, Shurrovk, & Goble” as long as they maintain the rights to their own music.

No they can't unfortunately, They already tried this. Stephen Housdin filed suit against BSG in the Australian Courts. The case went all the way up to the Australian Supreme Court which ruled in favour of Housdin, blocking Birtles, Sherrock, & Goble and also any concert promoters in the US from attempting to associate themselves with the LRB name whist preforming in the US. This ruling is the main reason why any concert promoters in the US will not back BSG financially, due to the restrictions on how they could be billed as. Now, your argument would have merit if Beeb Birtles, Glenn Sherrock, and Graham Goble were US citizens as courts in the US could then intervene in the matter, but because they're not US citizens, that's why they have to obey the rulings from the Australian Court since they could be breaking the law there by going against their rulings.

I saw - what I didn’t know at the time, the new LRB in South Carolina about 14 months ago and was extremely disappointed in their performance. The music was a sub-par version of what I was used to hearing on the radio and the tight, amazing vocal harmonies that first drew me to their music back in my teens was nonexistent. I paid $50 each for tickets. What a waste.

A sad and unfortunate turn of events for the original founders. I would have thought that the bands management would have made certain that the details were taken care of so that the band name rights were not just sitting there waiting to be nabbed by whomever.

So sad that legacy of the great original members and the master pieces are forced to be shadowed under the legal consequence of the band name ownership. Let's keep finger crossed that respect for those worked hard will finally see the guiding light.

Not knowing the backstory, I mistakenly bought tickets for the band touring as LRB in the summer of 2023. Before the concert, I contacted TicketMaster to get my money back and was refused by the group's management. I ended up canceling the credit card with the outstanding balance for the two concert tickets still unpaid. Told the credit card issuer they're accessory to theft by deception, and that's money they'll never see...

I’ve seen the Wayne Nelson tribute “Little River Band” on 4 or 5 occasions. They tour the US casino circuit. there are 2 American Indian casinos in central NY which book them often, most notably the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Vernon NY. I’ve also seen them in fort Myers Florida.IMO, their vocals are 1st rate for a tribute band. True they never mention the original 3 singer songwriters by name or Stephen Housden. I presume they are using the name under license and are paying royalties to the original songwriters. Otherwise how could Nelson continue to tour year after year without legal intervention? Nelson always recruits top shelf musicians for the band who are well rehearsed, and very good players & vocalists: drummer, keyboardist, plus 2 lead guitarists. I believe Nelson recruits them in Nashville. My wife loves all the old hits, and doesn’t mind that she’s hearing an impression of someone else’s work. If ever I hear that the songwriters aren’t being paid royalties,I will never see Wayne Nelson’s band again
