Mindblowing to see the Depths that low. They have some of the best level design in the game, very nonlinear and interconnected, and the atmosphere is exactly what such an area should feel like. If you go without the master key you're challenged to find your way to the bonfire instead of just being given one as a freebie. There's plenty of enemy variety between hollows, the butcher, slimes, rats, basilisks, channeler and the giant rat. I guess it must all be due to curse-related PTSD.

I love the depths. The depths was probably my most memorable gaming experience not even gonna lie. That's when Dark Souls got really dark, and the terror of those toxic frogs... The enemy placement is also fantastic as it's intense and makes you scared each time you turn a corner, which is something that disappeared towards the end of this game. And then the Gaping Dragon is one of the most terrifying bosses in all of video games. The timing of this area is perfect too. It's almost right at the beginning, and I don't ever remember being as nervous as I was going through the Depths in any other gaming experience. Absolutely love The Depths.

I think the Great Hollow and Ash Lake are some of the most beautifully designed areas in the game but their biggest problem is that they feel pretty incomplete and kinda pointless. Great Hollow is basically just annoying platforming to get a few unique items, most notably the Chloranthy Ring. And Ash Lake is basically just there for the covenant, which is probably the least popular covenant for PvP in the entire game. Instead of just copypasting another Hydra, I wish they would've put a really difficult dragon boss fight there that you have to defeat in order to gain access to the covenant. Having a boss fight on the shores with that awesome scenery would've been so much more gratifying.

I do too. The only real issue is the toxic dart dudes, but they never respawn after you've killed them. The poison swamp only really slows you down since poison itself is REALLY slow. Granted, I also tend to go with super glass-cannon builds until I kill the Iron Golem in Senn's Fortress, so I can usually kill the enemies quickly enough for them not to be an issue. It really suffers from just being super busy by connecting to the Depths, Valley of Drakes, AND the Demon Ruins, on top of being too dark in some places, and then throwing in the Toxic Darts make it REALLY confusing for first-timers especially. I pretty much always go through Blighttown through the Valley of Drakes with the Master key anyway.

Honestly areas like Blighttown, Tomb of the Giants and New Londo Ruins are awesome. They really fit the setting, lore and place they are in the map. If you go deep down in the earth, you'd hardly expect there to be light. If you go into a down below the sewers, well... you'd pretty much expect it to look like Blighttown. New Londo Ruins was just haunting and the atmosphere so eerie, it really felt like a dead place - the lack of bonfires was annoying, sure, but it also fit the whole "dead place" lore so I can't really complain about that either. The only two areas I really am not so fond of are Lost Izalith, which is just a total mess (how did anyone seriously vote for that as "best area"?), and the Demon Ruins, which are not even that bad and just feel unfinished and have some lacking boss fights. That really speaks to the overall quality of the world in DS1.

"Without further ado, let's jump in with Blighttown." Hah, nice one! I don't even remember how I voted by now, but I am pretty sure I rated Lost Izalith as the worst, but not even that area rated a 1/10. To be honest, Lost Izalith DOES have some content that makes it memorable for good reasons, namely the climaxes of Siegmeyer and Solaire's tragic stories and the final battle with Kirk. Likewise, I was surprised the Depths rated as low as it did, because I actually spent quite a lot of time down there (usually farming Large/Green Titanite Shards from the Slimes outside the bonfire room with Chaos Firestorm), but on reflection it IS boring, irritating (you mentioned the rats, dogs, slimes and torch hollows but COMPLETELY forgot the BASILISKS!) and doesn't really serve any purpose- at least Blighttown serves as the greatest test of your resolve to that point and the area where the game just comes clean and tells you "I hate you and I want you to die". Also, aside from rescuing Laurentius and meeting Domnhall there's NOTHING of any story relevance down there, it's just a transitional area. I do love the boss, though.

@NuclearToxinify8 жыл бұрын
Drangleic castle is, one of the better areas, but thats barely pushing above average. The DLC's really weren't that great, but maybe I've been spoiled by Artorias of the Abyss, which was amazing. They're still better than the base game, at the very least

I love blighttown! Well, I hate that I love to hate blighttown. It was a frustrating area to go through but it feels great to reach the ground floor's bonfire.

Dark Souls 2 - Worst Area - Frigid Outskirts.....fuck that fucking place!!!!

The depths isn’t that bad, the bonfire is the closer to the boss in the entire game.

Can confirm. Blighttown's FPS sucks on Xbox.

You know, the more I think about it, the sillier it is that you put the Crystal Cavern together with the Duke's Archives when they're TOTALLY different areas (and the Crystal Cavern isn't THAT small), but you kept the Oolacile Sanctuary separate from the Royal Wood when it's literally a tunnel with a bonfire, a boss arena that's a large round area with water on the ground, and the ruins area with another bonfire, an NPC and a handful of items. Yeah it's gorgeous, but the consistency is lacking here.

I can't wait for the ranking video of Dark Souls 2's area list . Mainly because I can't wait for you to roast and get salty on the the Frigid Outskirts (seriously fuck that area).

In the Sotfs version the blizzards are less frequent and you have more time inbetween, making the area actually tolerable (but not good)

Kinda a late comment but I decided to watch this video again! I love your videos so much, especially after playing Bloodborne! I'm now hyped to play all the Dark Souls games! But I wanted to throw a suggestion out there for a video I would love to see! How about ranking all Soulsborne/Darkblood/Demondarkbloodshadows boss themes?? I've never seen that done! And I think it would be quite interesting to rank boss themes. From all the games and then all together. This was just something I would love to see, but I'm always excited to see another video!
@tonisimola98058 жыл бұрын
Well, this really shows how much I disagree with the general opinions of the community. All the areas that are actually interesting and hostile gameplay-wise got a very low ranking, while those that are little more that settings where you can fight enemies on a plain flat field are yet to come... "If the solution isn't obvious, then the area is bad and bullshit."
@JasonDoe10008 жыл бұрын
Same thing happened in the Demon's Souls are voting, the areas that are a bit harder and not straight forward were the last ones
@randomguy66797 жыл бұрын
Asetoni 137 wait, you actually consider lost izalith and tomb of the giants well designed areas? hahahahahahaha
@randomguy66797 жыл бұрын
Asetoni 137 not to mention "interesting"
@tonisimola98057 жыл бұрын
randomguy6679 Lost izalith is rushed, that I can agree with. There are obvious design errors like missing textures and that lava that makes it impossible to see. The developers even said it's unfinished. The Tomb of Giants on the other hand is a very well done area. There is complexity to the level design, unique enemies and a mechanic that rewards exploration of previous areas. The oppressing darkness makes you take a different approach to combat. It is a well designed area, if only it were a bit longer...

I’m playing through dark souls 1 for the first time and am in blighttown atm. I was shocked to see the depths so low, I loved the section and was probably the best one so far. Also, can someone explain what this curse thing is cause I never got cursed in the depth
@austinmoore9336 Жыл бұрын
Getting cursed had to do with those frog-looking enemies in the lower part of the depths. The curse itself happens when you stand in the mist they spray for too long and your character is instantly petrified. Personally I was indifferent to the depths when I went through them. I found myself going in circles at certain moments which was frustrating, but for the most part the enemies weren’t too tough and exploring was enjoyable. I’m also playing through ds1 for the first time and I just got to Anor Londo. Good luck man.
@pigeon2820 Жыл бұрын
@@austinmoore9336 thanks, I experienced being cursed for the first time but it was in the tree in blighttown, I had to run all the way back to the bell gargoyle arena and buy the stone. I’m also in anor londo atm and am fighting the boss. Good luck with them :)

I'm actually glad blightown is above quite a few other areas. I personally like the area. yes darts are annoying, yes the falls sucked, but as you said it really encompasses the feel of souls. If it wasn't for the frame problems the winding way down is pretty cool.
@sodagirl10923 жыл бұрын
I find that Blighttown is more of a problem when you've just come out from taking out the Gaping Dragon and are either too overconfident or too unwilling to homeward bone back to the bonfire and re-do the Depths. Yeah, the first Blighttown bonfire is easy enough to get to, but when you've just been smacked around by the Gaping Dragon, it's a really rough way to reach your next checkpoint.

Honestly, I actually enjoy Demon Ruins and Lost Izalith. (Bed of Chaos, Asylum Demon reskin, and lava glow notwithstanding) I love how much of a badass I feel when I'm slaughtering Capra and Taurus Demons with 2-3 hits and I always enjoyed fighting in long forgotten/destroyed cities in videogames henceforth my love for the two areas. Also the lore of how Gwyn's silver turned black knights struggled and fought against the demons of Lost Izalith just makes me feel even more godlike when I'm ripping through them solo.
@jeremiecampeau-poirier26367 жыл бұрын
in my opinion, Blighttown rank is legit, sure the poisonous enemies are annoying, but it's knid of straight forward, while you can get lost in Tomb of Giants, the Depths and some other areas, and if you die in these, it can be hard to get back your souls because you might lose your way again, also Blighttown can be linked to Firelink Shrine, so it's nice to know that you can get out of it

Even though I like Dark Souls II, when completing the survey I realized that there is not a single area in the main game that i would gladly give a ten (i haven´t played the dlcs so I won´t judge those)
@arty76916 жыл бұрын
Geez, when I heard about New Londo ruins, I was half expecting a town full of burning buildings, kind of like a combination of oolacile township and old yharnam. Even when I learned that the people of New Londo were drowned, therefore it wouldn't make sense for the town to be on fire, I thought it nonetheless.

Anyone new to dark souls remastered permanently go to Ash lake and farm the giant mushrooms there while using the dragon scale you get perfectly 1000 souls per big mushroom, Ash lake is the best starter place my best record getting there is 18:51 getting to the stone dragon without dying best to rest at blight town and make your way toward Ash lake

I think one of the main reasons blight town might be considered the worst areas in dark souls 1 is because unlike a lot of the other commonly agreed on 'terrible areas', blight town is before you get the ability to teleport between bonfires. In later frustrating and bad areas you can return to other bonfires and get some stuff from merchants or farm items or whatever you want. When you get to blight town though if you ever want to return to a previous area for any reason (needing more moss, more humanity, wanting to play a different area to have some actual fun) then you have to climb up a whole bunch of ladders to find your way back, and then when you want to proceed with the game you'll have to return all the way back down into it. It seems like a huge hassle to leave and return to the area before you get to the point where you can teleport, and that fact might be why plenty put it as the worst area over other areas that might be worse than it for other reasons.
@D3th10rd6 жыл бұрын
Coming back to this in the Remaster after having suffered through the console era of this game, I am really enjoying a lot of the areas down low on the list. Blighttown actually looks quite beautiful when you can see the surroundings and New Londo looks absolutely stunning and ominous. While Lost Izalith still looks unfinished, it is now not as bad as before as the improved lighting seems to make it easier on the eyes. Bed of Chaos still is shiity as usual though.
