I basically took Byrgenwerth as the irony it was: such a historically significant, lore-centric location was not much more than a small college. To imagine that such a massive curse of beasthood and plague of blood could emerge from such a seemingly miniscule location...I saw as a visual metaphor for how Rom concealed a much larger truth than what we could see. ......also gogdamn I just finished Forbidden Woods I did NOT want another huge area.

Honestly I personally would replace Byrgenwerth with the Forbidden Woods in my list. Forbidden Woods is long, annoying, filled with really hostile and annoying enemies that are hard to avoid, and is FILLED with important items meaning I have to take FOREVER to go grab them all. It took me HOURS to get through Forbidden Woods my first time, and I didn't have ANY fun with it. Bygenwerth was cool though. The enemies were interesting, and had some heavy lore significance with the eyes and stuff. The lady inside was a really fun fight for me, slapping that old bitch around before jumping in to kill Rom was fun, and there's lots of little corners to explore. It even has a shortcut, despite being such a small area! I enjoyed it though, and I'm glad I did because I died a good 40-50 times to Rom and really hated that boss (I'm not patient enough and wind up getting one shot by either a spider or meteor bullshit) and the run through Byrgenwerth was actually enjoyable to get back to Rom.

Definitely intimidating on the first [few] playthrough[s], but if you have a light source, a blunt weapon or holy damage it definitely makes the area less tedious. @rainbowskin33795 жыл бұрын
i was kind of irritated by his inclusion of tomb of the giants especially putting it over lost izalith which calling it uninspired is putting it nicely. tomb of the giants is a bad level if your idea of playing dark souls is holding the run button at all times and ignoring mechanics that the game has shoved into your face multiple times. on your first play through its annoying but they striaght up hand you a light source and holy damage isnt hard to come by dmod is just angry that he cant use one armor set and weapon through the whole game

@darthkarl994 жыл бұрын
@@rainbowskin3379 I know i'm 3 months late to your comment and quite a bit more to the video overall, but whilst i sort of agree that his speedrunning experiance colours things, ToG is still annoying to deal with even for me and i'd probably rate it the worst area for experienced players in DS1, (Blighttown is a lot worse until you've played enough to be able to reliably and safely get in through the back way), with only Great Hollow giving it any competition for an experienced player, (Again until you learn the area Blighttown is way worse, in fact it's probably the least new player friendly area of them all in DS1). DS1's core combat loop relies on a combination of good mobility and use of blocks backed by a good knowledge of enemy tells. he first half of tomb of giants really messes with this thanks to it's narrow walkways, enemies with high knockback, and limited light. It does get better once you past rhea, (your movement area tends to be less restricted). But getting there can be hugely frustrating, in particular because the entire blocking part of the loop makes the skull lantern a really impractical light source choice, so unless your running some kind of sorc build you have to go get the sunlight maggot or really know the area perfectly to get through there.More than any other area the ToG gives a giant screw you to DS1's general ability to play things mostly in whichever order you wish if your good enough, (and know enough).

I respect your opinion, but humbly disagree. The area's shortness is so jarring when compared to the area you just got out of, Forbidden Woods. And it's not just the complete lack of enlightenment we get lore wise from the area. It's the utter lack of unique challenges. Mosquito dudes abound, each with one basic attack pattern that always stays the same. That nasty creepy crawly guy is an utter pushover. The squiddy-boy is, well, a squiddy-boy. And then we have the single church hoonter in a location where it's the floor plan that will end up being your undoing more than her. You don't feel like you've outsmarted a npc hoonter when you beat her, you either feel like you got lucky, or that you outsmarted the damn house. The area needed more, well, it needed more areas. I actually think that mechanic is fine IF you give the player someway to counteract it. That was my main complaint with DS3. No Rusted Iron Ring. In DS2, it's less of an issue because there's no poison and you can still roll and sprint even if it is slower. But DS3 doesn't allow you to sprint at all, and forces you to fat roll with no way to remedy these problems.

Dark Souls 3 has the best swamp level of the series. Its by far the easiest, whereas most enemies pose no threat and the ones that do are easily avoidable, and the poison is so weak it might as well not exist. Its definitely not a bad part of the game, especially with the ladder to the wolf and Stray Demon up above giving lots of flavor. Blighttown is multiple times worse in every aspect, and DS2's swamp isn't even comparable.
@twistedgwazi57274 жыл бұрын
It still is a slow and annoying area filled with frustrating enemies that forces you to explore enough of it through the three fire thing that it overstays its welcome on subsequent playthroughs and you get way too lost on your first playthrough. It's boring slow-walking and fatrolling through a swamp only to get gangbanged by enemies that are completely unimpeded by the poison. Blighttown is way better because: 1. It doesn't force you to fatroll through the swamp 2. You can very easily go through the swamp, it's much smaller than Farron Keep. 3. It doesn't force you to traverse so much of it to progress.
@flotots3 жыл бұрын
@@twistedgwazi5727 i agree, level design in blighttown is still moderately impressive despite being annoying (with the option to traverse it from either direction and with the different layers and the ability to skip through the annoying parts almost completely) and I actually enjoy going back on subsequent playthroughs, despite being occasionally enraged. Meanwhile farron keep is not impressive to me in any single way, really has no redeeming qualities and I have never even once enjoyed going back there. As a Bloodborne junkie. Byrgenwerth wasn't THAT bad. It stands more as a setpiece in the lore than an actual level, but it gives you a quick peek into the transition from gothic horror to cosmic horror. I've even got 3 areas far worse in my own mind: 1. The Forbidden Woods, the area you have to slog through before reaching Byrgenwerth. Needlessly large and twisted around itself, and filled to the brim with annoying enemies that will bite your ankles, thrash around to prevent you from getting close, spit poison at you from a distance, and a few of them can even grab you for massive guaranteed damage. 2. Yahar'gul, the area AFTER you kill Rom. Bell ringers constantly summoning enemies that can surround you and block your movement, mini-Amygdalas shooting lasers on thin bridges, giant pigs hidden in every crevice leading up to The One Reborn, and the worst fucking Hunter gank in the game (3 on 1, with all of them having inflated health bars and infinite quicksilver bullets, so yeah). 3. The Nightmare Frontier. Yet another of From's patented "poison swamp" levels (and another place Patches can knock you off a cliff directly into the middle of it). Poison-spewing slugs, rock-throwing yetis that can see you from way too far away and are almost impossible to reach, and of course the Winter Lantern that can frenzy you to death as long as they have line of sight. Also another Hunter gank, but you can kill them with the poison.

I just played (and beat) it for the first time the other day, Forbidden Woods is absolutely the worst level in that game and deserves a spot on the list more so than Byrgenworth. That said, I never thought about the shift in tone, that's a very interesting point that makes me appreciate it more. First of all, no crystal cave? I think it's way more difficult and annoying compared to some of the areas on the list. And secondly, I don't get the problem with tomb of the giants.. the whole catacombs were incredibly well designed and were actually the reason I got so involved with the souls series. The intricate path, the enemies, the shortcuts you could take if you mastered the level, it was just an awesome experience for me. Love the videos, keep it up : )
@jacobnorris82562 жыл бұрын
There's like 2 mandatory invisible paths and they're both straight lines, and there's little reason to care about the rest. Unless you're going for Seath's tail too, he's a pretty easy boss so you shouldn't need to go through it much either. So although it's a bad area, it's a really easy area to rush through on subsequent playthroughs, moreso than 10th place on the list. I don't think i've fallen off the map in the crystal cave once since my first playthrough. The areas on this list seems to be ones that are terrible no matter how many times you do them, which makes sense since this guy has obviously played through all the games a whole lot of times. I can however agree that catacombs in particular is pretty great. Though I still don't like tomb though as I find obscuring vision a universally obnoxious mechanic in video games. Also, it really does irk me that both New Londo ruins and crystal cove are bad areas entirely because they didn't bother adding any bonfires for no damn reason. It's so easy to fix them.

And getting up to it is even worse, huge maze filled with annoying enemies. I didn't even bother trying to get to the ballista on SL1, not worth the rage.

I'm going to be honest. I don't hate blight town, I honestly think its a really good area. It has complicated level design which prepares you for areas like the catacombs, dukes archives, and new londo. The enemys are a little ganky but they will prepare for things later on in the game as well. The boss is a nice challenge as well guelagg has the perfect difficulty shes not too hard, but not too easy, she does reasonable amount of damage and her attacks are pretty difficult to dodge sometimes. I just think blighttown isn't that bad as everyone says.

I completely agree. I never got the hate for blightown and how people say that it's the worst area in the game. There are much worse areas in DS1.

people who played on PS3 hate this area, because it couldn't maintain 30 fps. But on PC Blighttown is one of my favourite areas, because of atmosphere. Mosquitoes were a little bit irritating (though they were very unique), and swamp wasn't as good as the other parts of the area, but overall the atmosphere, the spooky feel, and the terryifing enemies nailed this location for me

@UCEd_nzZQNztv4HKO3EXKjRg you are completely right dark souls for me really isn't that hard anyway, the game in general isnt that hard. So when they add poison in an area people are like. WHAT THE FUCK FROMSOFT I THOUGHT DARK SOULS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FAIR!!!!!!!

I don’t think Bygenwerth is fair. Like sure it’s short but I don’t think what is there is bad, it’s just a fun 5 minutes of a run through. I dunno I could be in the minority but an area being short and not having a gameplay section matching lore depth doesn’t make it bad imo.

DeMod, I love your content, I think you're a great guy and I almost always agree with you but this time I have to question the reason why Byrgenwerth is on the list. I believe that the lore supports that it is small. It was the first place where heretical people sought eldritch knowledge. It wasn't going to be very popular or have many students. The reason why the healing church took off so well and basically became the ruling class in Yarnham is because Laurence brought the 'healing' blood which was seen as heretical by the college. It makes sense that is so small and ransacked, there wasn't much left, only the guardian of rituals Rohm. It would also explain why a white cloaked church member was at the college (in order to gain information, possibly to find out how to kill/get to Rohm). This is not to insult you or anything, I just figured I would say my view and see if you or others agree or disagree with me, I welcome respectful discourse.

All the hate on DS2 is honestly sad. I find every area in DS1, except probably Undead Burg, Painted World and the Kiln, worse and less fun than any area in DS2, with very few exceptions (mainly Frigid Outskirts, but that's a co-op area). DS1 has better world building and extremely well done connection between areas, but that's actually it. How is the archer bullshit in Anor Londo or the way back to Firelink Shrine from Pinwheel okay, but Iron Passage isn't? Oh, yeah, because "it's Dark Souls 2".
@theshaqshack79735 жыл бұрын
Did you... did you just compare the Iron Passage to Anor Londo and the Tomb of Giants? I pray for you good sir.
@Raushna5 жыл бұрын
Not Anor Londo as a whole, but the way up the buttress, absolutely. And I'd take Iron Passage over Tomb of Giants/the Catacombs anytime. I died only once on my way to Smelter Demon while on the other hand I was stuck for hours trying to get out of that damn tomb without the Lordvessel. Iron Passage is not nearly as frustrating.
@theshaqshack79735 жыл бұрын
RoxasTwistedMind oh okay, that’s fair. I was just surprised because I absolutely love dark souls 2 for its gameplay but out of every single area including dlc, the iron passage was the only area I never completed. And don’t ask how but I managed to beat reindeer fuckland but not the iron passage... :/

So, Ash Lake, Anor Londo, and Darkroot Garden are shit? OK.
@Raushna5 жыл бұрын
@@theshaqshack7973 I can understand that. DS2 was my first Dark Souls and I actually didn't do any of the DLC challenge areas on my first playthrough, because I really sucked at the game. But when I came back to it after beating the other two entries as well as Demon's Souls it really wasn't that bad anymore. So I'd suggest you also give it another try, if you managed to beat Reindeer Fuckland you can definitely do Iron Passage!

Catacombs are only bad if you’re a sadist and go early to get a certain boss/certain weapon/certain upgrade AKA me If you you got some levels under your belt, and go right before you enter anor londo it’s not that bad, because you get OPTIONS to deal with the skeletons, even if they’re not great, you still get a couple of blunt weapons for strength users, and a halberd for the dex users

Dark Souls 1 is mostly smart about the level design. When I first got to the Tomb of the Giants, I tried it few times with the skull lantern, but it was still SOOO hard... So I went to the Lost Izalith instread where I stumble upon Solaire and the Sun bug thingies. Got the helmet and it was like getting the ticket to the Tomb of the Giants.
