I really dont get that one tbh. Mai is such an insufferable piece of shit with how she sadistically hurts him. I get that like 90% of anime fans seem to be masochists, but she is genuinely completely nonconsensual in how she does it. Yes, he "enjoys" it, but she never stops to obtain consent or even to check his boundaries, mainly because that has literally nothing to do with why she does it. She does it because she is upset or feeling sadistic. How does someone who isnt a supreme masochist enjoy anything involving her? @@perchatka This is a long reply, so let me just say that I dont think that anyone is wrong for liking that show. After all, we are all just voicing our opinions. If you're interested, here's why I dislike the romance in Bunny Girl Senpai. Here's the thing, I can acknowledge that there is some deep romance and otherwise interesting character development in a story. But at the same time a story may gloss over some glaring flaw like physical abuse. Perhaps there's some story with a prince who kidnaps a maiden and forces her to sleep with him, but then they fall in love and their romance ends up being the most well-written thing ever. I can acknowledge the interesting characters and the deep romance, but I would not be able to shake the terrible thing that that love was built on. Or perhaps it's a story of a master and a slave who fall in love and their romance is so deep and nice, but every now and then the master puts his foot down and beats the slave over some transgression. Then everything goes back to being lovey dovey. I would acknowledge the depth of the writing, but I would not enjoy the romance. These examples are exaggerations, but it really is as simple as that. That's how I felt about Horimiya. I didnt like how Hori would get jealous over him talking to another girl, to the point that she straight up threw heavy books in his face (while he was wearing glasses). That would hurt like a motherfucker and would personally be unforgivable for me in a real relationship. So I cant view that as a healthy romance even if it's otherwise written well. I also cant stand how she forces him to act "dominant" and abusive towards her in public without considering his own boundaries about that. That's something that's personal to me as I'm involved in such play myself. That's also what's happening here. Mai is objectively abusing him without actually checking with him that it is ok, as you would do in a bdsm relationship. It doesnt matter if he "likes it". Even if a sub says that they like something, you dont do these things unprompted. You discuss these things and regularly check in with them to see if it's truly ok and that they arent just playing along for you. Mai doesnt even approach this from that kind of standpoint, she just does it because she wants to. This stuff is very close to my heart, so when I see something being done in such an unhealthy way, that taints the entire story and the entire relationship for me. So, unless you can somehow prove to me that what I said is wrong, how exactly is this the "worst analysis you've ever seen"? Does she sit down with him and respectfully discuss his boundaries, what he is ok with and what he isnt ok with, or does she just slap him and step on his foot unprompted? Call him names? And does she do this as a well-defined "bedroom play" or does she simply slap him because she is angry? In an attempt to force him to apologize to her without respectfully considering his side? Can you truthfully answer any of these questions without it seeming like an abusive relationship? Objectively speaking? I cant think of this as some fluffy romance when this is what I'm presented with in the show. And that's as someone who actually does enjoy the whole kink thing irl. Perhaps that's why this aspect of the show ruins it for me, because I can't stand seeing it done in an unhealthy way, it's too close to home. There is a lack of basic respect in this dynamic. But if you can dismiss all these things and if you like masochistic fiction without caring for boundaries or consent (and there's nothing wrong really with liking a fantasy like that, as long as it is a fantasy), then I'm sure the show is great. I won't deny that the characters or plot may be interesting. But abusive, unbalanced relationships are a dealbreaker for me when it comes to enjoying a romance that isnt a sexual fantasy. For me, a "perfect" fictional romance is one that I would actually tolerate seeing in real life. I would never tolerate nor want to see an irl relationship like the one in Bunny Girl Senpai and so that romance will never be on top of my list, even if it may have well-written elements. In contrast, while I'm not like Gojo myself, if I were in his shoes I would be happy with a relationship with Marin. I can view that as a nice example of a romance.

@@_Lumiere_ oh, so this goes even deeper into the things i hate in modern society - the Abuse witnesses. I rarely talk about this shit, but i actually have something to say. First, about the relationship in the anime. Sakuta clearly showed Mai that he doesn't mind this kind of teasing and he actually kinda likes it. Also Mai (and us viewers as well) knows Sakuta's character pretty well, so if he didn't like anything about what she did he would definitely tell her. They're ok, i don't worry about how their relationships go because i know they'll be good. Then about the social aspect of abuse. If the culture doesn't let some people cope with abuse (middle east or anything like that) then we can't do anything about that, it takes a very long time to reform a culture. If you live in a more liberal environment then it's all your choice how to deal with your abusive partner and whether to keep them your partner at all. In this case it's only your fault that you're being abused. Marriage, kids? Then you've made a mistake the very moment you married, it's just the consequences of your choice. Divorce is still an option after all. People these days tend to keep yapping about their problems and disturb everyone around them instead of trying to deal with those problems. In my opinion this is a sign of mental weakness. And this is what i never want to think about while discussing anime.

Dear lord the rating inflation on this list was insane. Also, putting Toradora in B tier is a travesty. I watched it earlier this year for the first time ever and it's now my favorite romance anime. The abuse was admittedly tough in the beginning, but it evolved nicely over time and was explained within the context of the story, which is what I needed to accept it. Too often a tsundere is just a tsundere for no reason but to serve as an easy character trope to mask poor writing, but Taiga's background made it understandable. Also, they fell in love because they both needed each other given their family situations, it was a genuinely touching love story compared a lot of the trash littering the A and S tiers. Even with the abuse it was still a much more believable love story than the vast majority of romance anime. One last thing, the original light novel NEVER makes Taiga physically violent with Ryuji except for the home invasion scene. If that is what stops you from enjoying the anime I suggest people try reading the light novel instead.

Something that most people won't pick up on watching Toradora as well, is that Taiga is a fundamentally broken character. What she says/how she acts/what she actually things never seems to line up properly. In the last few episodes, where she's actively trying to lie to herself and everyone around her really shows how far gone she is mentally into this disillusioned state where she can never be important to anyone. The characters in this show were absolute peak writing, S tier for life.

Tsurezure Children is my favorite. Quite shocking its not in that list! Having multiple couples makes it easier to stay interested, its not about choosing best girl or the big drama, its about smaller situations between people. Almost like a collection of how various couples came to be together but each couple offers a different flavour of romance. Its got something for everyone, how can you not like it?

Lovely Complex would be another missing. That said, if a romance story isn't finished, it really shouldn't be on the list, or just automatically dumped into a "Not finished" tier. Because, sure, some shows are trash from start to finish (Domestic Girlfriend), and even the worst possible ending (worst girl wins) won't drag it down any further, but if a show can't stick the landing, it doesn't deserve to be rated highly. And never getting to the landing part means they haven't stuck it yet.

Dangers is undoubtedly an S+ level romance, although it doesn't bring anything new to the genre (which is impossible really), what's interesting is how realistic and meticulously well written it is, its main characters break romantic stereotypes and thanks to that they come to life, it's like watching two real teenagers interact with each other, getting to know each other, falling in love and getting over each other thanks to their partner. It perfectly understands the formation and feeling of the first love that arises in adolescence, criticizes the superficiality in relationships and gives a beautiful message about true love and the importance of a genuine bond. A romance that transmits so much without saying it beforehand and directly? Undoubtedly a masterpiece of showing and not telling, if it were to be analyzed in depth you would realize the enormous narrative potential it has and how well done it is.

There are two things that cause them to dislike the "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" anime: 1. They don't like anime with a sad intention can also be seen from the ratings of Your Lie in April and Angel Beats!. One of the things I think QQ did really well is hide the main character perspective from us. And I think that was done really well since if we started to notice from his perspective which girl started to become more special to him as the arcs went by there wouldn't be too much of a mystery or surprise. I think that is the biggest problem and I can understand the argument that the romance of QQ suffers because of that, since I think the main focus was the mystery and not the romance - at least from Fuutarou perspective. So I can understand if it feels out of nowhere at first, like the main guy just chose someone just because. I agree the ending was rushed but I don't think it ruins what came before, since if you really paid attention to the signs given the only real option for the winner was only between 2 choices out of the 5 and only one of those would have felt out of nowhere - which thankfully it wasn't the winner (Itsuki). The fact that people were able to make a 40+ doc page theory of the winner waaaay before the decision was made and was right is a bit of proof of that.

MC wasn't able to maintain his friendship with his sister because of him dating one of her friends and decides to break up.
