Yoshi can eat enemies effectively killing them with an infinite use weapon in one hit. In addition, Mario and Luigi have control over the magic triangle and weapon triangle being able to wield axes and javelins. Truly some of the best units in fire emblem. And they have over 100% growth rates in every stat. Their low bases and mid game join time may be a turn off, but they more than make up for it with their utility and mobility. They can also heal other units using items in their inventory. Yoshi can jump over terrain, and Mario and Luigi have special paired attacks that are similar to the triangle attack considering they always hit and crit. They just need to be using the same weapon or magic type

@@VicViper I'm not really familiar with Awakening tier lists, but I can't believe Stahl is worse than Fiona. All he can have working against him beyond bad stats (which can be corrected with grinding, something Fiona doesn't really have the option to do) is what, bad support options, maybe? And speaking of that, he can always be a pair-up not, which Fiona cannot. Whereas Fiona has much worse availability and the worst case of terrain penalties of any cavalier/paladin in Radiant Dawn working against her. Oh, and the crap Paladin class caps, too.

​@@SharurFoF - Fiona at base doesn't get ORKOed by everything in her starting chapter (the Steel Lance's weight makes her incredibly vulnerable) she does survive the Myrmidons even when they double her, and the Mages are fine enough for her to dispatch, the latter are actually an enemy type she can take care of better than most Awakening units on any Awakening enemy type on Lunatic. Stahl actually does get killed by everything in one round safe from a select few if he's not paired up with a SPD+ character since he gets doubled by nearly and Awakening enemies are on steroids (Myrmidons with 23 Atk while Stahl has 11...). The only enemies not doubling him are a select few Barbarians, though only just with a 4 Speed gap and they leave him at 3 HPs in one hit. Her benchmarks are closer to RD's enemies than Stahl's are to Awakening's enemies (who also wield better weapons than you do). - Fiona deals meager damage, but she has access to forges, stat boosters, 1-2 range Javelins, and BEXP from the get-go if you're masochist and really want to make her usable. Stahl deals meager damage on his own, barely more paired up, and it only gets worse in Chapter 3 onward (cause Chapter 2 enemies have like 3-4 Defense minimum). Does he have a reliable tool to boost his values? No. From the moment you get him, you're entirely dependent on RNG drops to make him better, otherwise it's pure combat. You could include DLCs, however DLCs present an issue where I would have to buy separate content to rebalance my team just because the devs weren't capable to do that in the main game. Not everyone has access to it, therefore not everyone is on equal footing if you include them. - You mention grinding, but grinding simply doesn't work in Awakening on Lunatic during earlygame to midgame; all enemies during skirmishes have the stats of main chapter enemies you'd encounter 2/3rds into the game. When Stahl already dies in one round of combat in Chapter 2 on enemies that are """"level 2""'"", you can't decently ask anyone to grind on enemies that are way into tier 2 classes, it's simply unfeasible. - Pair up doesn't save Stahl. Awakening on Lunatic is a stat fest, and Stahl would need way more than just +3 everywhere to be even considered "mediocre" instead of "awful" at base. The only way he shows his use is, yes, by BEING the pair up, though even then there are better options. To be fair, Stahl isn't the only one in his situation in Awakening (they're way too many), but that doesn't make Stahl more useful in absolutes. Donnell despite how absolute shite he is can be a pair up too, though at the end of the day, that still costs a deployment slot. - You're overplaying the terrain penality issue in RD; while it exists and her movement does drop, she's still as mobile as an infantry class with the added benefit of super canto in the worst case scenario. Many of the maps where she has movement penalty she doesn't even need to move far; Part III DB chapters are mostly defensive ones, 3-6 in particular where Fiona can't move into the swamp is more often than not played like a defense chapter with easy choke points anyway and Jill flying over for the kill & coming back, if most of your infantry units aren't going in the swamp then why is it a problem that Fiona can't? Most players wouldn't chase the laguz in the dark with their infantry when they can be flanked at any moment anyway, you'll still need units on the shore. Only big issue I find is ledges specifically in 3-12, not so much in 1-E though. Yes, she does suffer the most across the game, but in all cases, either her situation is workable, or it's a hindrance but she still has super canto to balance out giving her a different movement option. If you're willing to use her, you're not going to clear chapters quickly anyway (and you sure as hell won't with Stahl either), so the lower movement option isn't a big deal as long as she can have a task that she can complete. 3-6, a kill count map where enemies move towards you and can be trapped via choke points, isn't as much of a hindrance to her as it is to Titania or Oscar in 3-4, a reach map where the whole last third is inaccessible to them.

@@VicViper It's true that the absolute worst offenders in terms of bad cavalry maps are 3-4 and 3-7, but Fiona's problem isn't that she faces the worst of those, it's that she faces it in almost all of the paltry few maps she's in before part 4 (which isn't particularly kind to cavalry either). Oscar and Titania at least have a lot of maps in part 3 where they're unhindered. And I would argue that a reasonably fast clear of 3-6 does go into the swamp quite a bit, especially once the Black Knight shows up. But those are quibbles - the crux of this comes down to a couple questions I have. First, is the payoff for training Stahl as lousy as the payoff for training Fiona, relative to his peers? I.e. does he have relatively poor growths or something? Second, how hard is training him, relative to his peers? My impression is that everyone faces the uphill battle you describe, especially in the early game. And third, how easily can you get by without ever training a unit like Stahl? If it's not obvious, what I'm wondering is whether a large chunk of Awakening's cast is all F tier, whether there's something that limits Stahl in comparison to his peers enough (despite his early join time) that he's down there mostly by himself, or whether the difficulty of Awakening Lunatic is such that a (e.g.) C-tier Awakening unit looks like an F-tier Radiant Dawn unit.

@@SharurFoF Kay I'll try to answer those points, although I'll admit my experience of Lunatic mode mostly boiled down to facepalming at nearly every earlygame unit and forcing my way through with Robin + a couple of other units. Stahl just has pretty bad bases, Sully for example joins a chapter earlier with -1 Str & Def and -2 HP, but because she has 8 Spd and proficiency in lances, she technically has better survivability for not getting doubled as often and equivalent to better DPS at base. The problem of using growths is assuming he'll get out of his bad bases, enemies don't necessarily get speedier in the next few chapters (until around Chapter 6 or 7), but they do get tougher and more numerous, so feeding him kills until he levels up is really a miserable experience similar to Fiona. You could also say that Donnel has superb payoff just based on his growths cause he has like 65% and above in everywhere that matters, but his bases are so trash that he deals like 0-4 damage, crappy accuracy that'd make him part of the FE6 axe users family, and his survivability starts worse than base Lissa. Otherwise, Stahl's growths in absolutes aren't "bad" I'd say, but Sully still has the edge on that I believe. 50% Speed on a unit that gets doubled almost always can be pretty prone to further RNG screwage. The payoff I can only speculate, it has to be similar to Fiona, where you have a pretty bad time in the early & part of midgame, but if you baby the hell out, you have a great unit for the Endgame, cause yeah, Fiona with a Wishblade, Earth affinity, her innate skills, and 34 Spd in the tower I think makes her probably the best Paladin in the Endgame, but is it worth it? Heck no. But is it more miserable to use Stahl than other characters? Frankly on average... I think so. I didn't use Sully long term, but I did try to use Miriel, Sumia, Vaike and Kellam (the latter two as pair ups especially), and while it was pretty hard, it was nowhere near as bad. Miriel has magic and although her damage is subpar at best it's a safe accurate ranged option that targets Res (pretty handy against Wyvern Riders), Sumia can fly and has an Iron Lance & uses it at base when it's not even available yet in shops, Vaike's Spd is as bad as Stahl's but he's buff & meaty as heck and gives tons of Str as a pair up, and Kellam can tank and gives tons of Def. Stahl as a pair up gives a bit of several stats, but I never felt it made a difference, like a jack of all trades but master of bugger all. Afterwards it does get a bit better for new recruits, Lon'qu, Maribelle, Cordelia, and Libra I felt were "comparatively" okayish to good additions in the team (Tharja who? I DON'T HEAR ANYTHING). That said, Virion and Donnell are pretty fucking trash, so Stahl isn't the absolute bottom of the barrel, but he's still pretty low priority for deployment. Movement in earlygame mostly only matters if you wanna run away from enemies (unless you can fly), and if you do there's a reason for that: your unit can't compete. Running into a flock of enemies in Lunatic in the hopes to clear the map quickly is a death wish unless you have like Frederick or Robin (with good defense) paired up with Kellam. And to answer your third question... it's Awakening. Robin solo with water trick in the prologue and his pair ups + some Frederick usage makes the game way WAY easier than trying to level up the rest of your army. Stahl can die in Chapter 2 and you won't really feel any difference, and although that goes for a lot of units earlygame, I'd still miss a couple of them on small occasions like Sumia/Cordelia ferrying, Chrom's Spd boost as a pair up, Miriel/Ricken accurate magic against Wyvern Riders, etc.

I know this is for Christmas/Holidays but I’d honestly like to see you do some of the other archetypes at some point. I think the early game male mages (Merrics? Idk) and the Navarres/Swordmasters could make for fun lists, it’s interesting to rank units that fill similar roles but in different games, where sometimes said role differs in its value. On the subject of this list, I think you sold FE10 Kieran a bit short. While he gets screwed over from being part of the CRK he’s arguably the most salvageable of the CRK that join up in 3-10. He has some fantastic numbers and while he won’t be much use in the tower due to awful Paladin caps, he can definitely contribute decently in the remainder of Part 3 & whatever army he’s deployed in during part 4. There’s also the fact that besides Geoffrey, he’s gonna be your best unit for the CRK maps, even when the letges in the Part 3 map force him into a certain route. While you can certainly solo these maps with Geoffrey, Kieran alongside Marcia can speed things up and ensure you save all of the houses in Part 3. Oscar is still definitely better, despite being pretty meh the entire time he’s around because being part of the Greil Mercs is just that good. I don’t think the gap between them is an entire tier apart, I’d probably put Kieran in between FE12 Cain & Kyle personally, though RD units are so hard to value due to how crazy RD is with its availability and resources, so I’m really just being nitpicky. I pretty much agree with every other placement, even though I love my red cavs and I don’t like seeing how much green cavs dominate them in tier list form.

Pitfall with Alan and Lance: since they're both good units, just use them both. The unpromoted one still has a mount and good stats to hold his own for 7 more chapters. The advantages that the unpromoted one brings to your army are still far greater than the advantages most other units bring imo.

Like, Cecil from FE 3/12? She's the third cavalier there, but since I never finished those games I'm not entirely sure of how good she is (or Luke and Rody, really). Lowen is also the third cavalier, but he's more of an aloof and quite dreamy character that wants to be like Marcus. He doesn't have low self confidence, it's more of a "I want to be good, but I tend to daydream in the battlefield sometimes"

Sully is definitely a fair bit better than Stahl, to the point where I'd even put a tier between them. Sully starts doubling a lot sooner than Stahl does, and she has access to wyvern via second seal (including the ridiculous Deliverer from Griffon) while Stahl has Defense I guess. (also if you ask me the difficulty to base tierlists on for Awakening oughta be Hard bc Lunatic (or god forbid Lunatic+ which is a whole other beast entirely) is such a stat inflation infested mess that the tierlist is basically Robin in S tier, Frederick in A tier and everyone else in 'I guess you could train them but why bother when you could just make Robin snowball some more instead' tier)

Freddy falls off pretty quick in lunatic+ due to being a pre promoted unit. His stats are pretty low for a great knight and leveling him will be slow as he will gain exp as if he was a lv 21 unit. that exp is better off spent getting everyone else leveled up. Around chapter 4 freedy should begin transitioning into a back row unit and either pair up with chrom/robin/wife/kid to provide duel guards. Stahl actually gets better growths as a great knight than Freddy and has access to myrmidon for vantage, sword fair, astra, and lethality. sully also gets myrmidon but also wyvern rider which is just really good. not saying freedy is bad but making him good is going to be difficult as early game he can't get the exp he needs and late game he will struggle to kill appropriately leveled enemies.

@SiriusBusiness IIRC Frederick can actually take a few hits and in return nearly oneshots most enemies with the Silver Lance since higher difficulties don't actually give them all that much more bulk (you know that thing where a unit kills everything on enemy phase, frees up space, gets attacked by even more enemies as a result, and ends up dying? Yeah, that's why Lunatic doesn't boost enemy bulk.) Lunatic is all about taking full advantage of Frederick while also giving +Def Robin as much EXP as humanly possible so they can level ASAP and take pressure off Frederick, get even more of the available EXP and snowball from there. By Ch2 Robin should be close to on par with Frederick, bulk-wise. There's a turn by turn guide for the early chapters of Lunatic+ (which yes, even when you know what you're doing, is actually like 80% luck especially on Ch2) on YT, those same strategies naturally work for regular Lunatic too, just a lot more RNG-proof since you don't have to account for lolrandomskills

In Three Houses, the closest things we have to Christmas Cavaliers are Sylvain and Ingrid. Sylvain is red while Ingrid is green. And they behave like a Cain and Abel duo. And both have boons in riding and lances.

So, I completed awakening on luna + (no dlc, no skirmishes, no paralogues) and have to say that Sully is mediocre, but still WAY better than Stahl simply because she can actually take a hit (sometimes). Stahl joins like one chapter later with 2 less base speed and just gets doubled, and therefore one-rounded, by actually every enemy on the map.

I soloed the early game with Frederick and then gave every single experience point to sumia to get her to lvl 15 promoted for galeforce. This means that Lucina inherits galeforce. The Sumia/Lucina pair up was good enough to carry the rest of the campaign.

@John Adams agreed. Lyn mode being mandatory really helps both of them out. On a Hard mode playthrough, you can give one of em the Knight's crest that Wallace has which is a really great boon.

"These [Stahl & Sully] are not great on Lunatic [...] but they're not unusable here." Oh... if only they were just "not great" on Lunatic. Stahl gets doubled by nearly all the enemies on his starting map (ORKOed at that), and he deals like 5-7 damage on his own. Pair up can only do so much to fix that, he still dies in two hits and hits like a wet noodle. Sully is not much better offensively (although she does survive a lot better cause of 8 Spd vs 6). Add to that Awakening's terrible difficulty design, and it becomes a serious headache to try even keeping them alive. If you just do the campaign with no DLCs, it's a nightmare to use them. I'm not joking when I'm saying that FE10 Fiona is easier to use, at least she has easy access to forges from the start.

I rate Abel and Cain among the best units in FE1. Abel can double the plentiful 0AS enemies with Iron lances and javelins from base, and Cain, while not doing that, does still have combat stats close to your greats, with cav movement and lance access. They have great growths too. They are not Caeda or Minerva, but I'd rate them above Ogma even.

Eh, I might put Stahl an entire tier below Sully. He's noticeably slower even if the difference is like 3 base and 15 percent growth or something because the requirement to double is larger in Awakening. Stahl's speed issues are exacerbated on Lunatic where he's doubled by a number of early game enemies while Sully can pretty reliably take a hit. He gets a poor start and just doesn't grow as well.

Stahl is actually pretty good by midgame due to him having better growths as a gk than freddy. he also gets myrmidon which has a lot of good skills like vantage, sword fair, and astra and will help fix his speed. Sully is just really good as she gets both myrmidon and wyvern rider which are both really good classes with lots of good skills.

In my experience playing fe awakening, Sully and Stahl are both good but Sully usually turns out better because she's faster. Stahl is slower and has better defense. This is in hard mode, idk about lunatic because I only played it once and it's hard to use most characters in that difficulty :P

Stahl gets 1 round KOed by everything at base in Lunatic. Sully can actually contribute by doing small chip 'cause she can live a counter (Not to all enemies, but more than Stahl 'cause she can at least live like the mercenaries, which are very common).

Have you done a Lord tier list? If not, can you do one? They have to be the actual lord class so Corrin and Robin don't besides Chrom is the lord for FE13. I would like to see how you rate foot units, people on foot that use swords or axes, People from classes like Merc, Hero, Warrior and Fighter in different videos, You dont talk much about these type of units in general. As you like mounted units a lot, they are good don't get me wrong but I'd like to see how you feel about other units from other types.

I would have made sure Kein was a tier above Alba. E in lances when you're a lance knight is pretty unforgivable in Thracia. Kein doesn't really compete with Finn or Carion for a slot, but he's at least deployable sometimes, and will remain competent if you train him, but starting off without javelins is a way to get a thumbs down from me. Also, Sully is kind of great, while Stahl starts off kind of average/meh

I unironically think you rated Forde too high out of fear of bias. I think Forde belonged with bad Keiran and bad Abel. Kyle isn't great either, but I really think he's a tier above Forde. But it was fun, pre-promoted Paladin tier-list next, salty runbacks for bad Abel, and whichever of the Radiant Dawn characters count lol

Both Kyle and Forde are lackluster in FE8. He totally rated them too high because of mounted bias. Their really isn’t a so much of difference as to put them in different tiers though. They should be C tier at best. Probably D tier.

Forde and Kyle are still much better then those tiered below them. fe8 while having a nerf to Paladins is still a game that appreciates mounts immensely. Moving fast is super important on several maps and Kyle and Forde while a bit inferior statwise to some other characters still have good growths and okay bases. If Franz didn't exist Kyle and Forde would be rated higher.

He's not Kein and Alba bad, but his stats are not good, and you have better options for rescuers. Sylvain and Ingrid should be added. It was definitely in the developer's minds. Red and green motif after the timeskip. Classic Christmas Cavaliers dynamic with Sylvain as the cad and Ingrid is the embodiment of the chivalrous knight. The two are as much of a matched pair as any other two characters in the whole game. And, before anyone protests, Ingrid has a unique battle model as a cavalier to go along with a talent for riding and lances. That's not an accident.

Really, I think the only way to make it interesting would be to judge how well the unit fulfills the job of being a Jagen. That is to say, they have to dwarf your party early on, then be outstripped to the point that they don't perform in endgame without a lot of favoritism. Under that qualifier, you could sort out both the broken Jagens like Seth and Titania, and the crap ones like Gunter and FE3 Arran.

This was a fun video! My only complaints were Sully and Stahl’s placements relative to each other. Sully joins a chapter earlier with a better speed stat and a leaning towards lances (almost at D rank). Stahl faces a major problem early on because his speed is so bad that he gets doubled by certain enemies early on (especially on Lunatic, where that’s pretty much a death sentence). The difference of weapon ranks for these 2 isn’t major thanks to Discipline, but Sully definitely has a noticeable lead. There’s also the argument to be made about her mama powers, but that shouldn’t be important for ranking these 2 against each other. However, it could be pointed out that a lot of important early game units are/can be male, meaning that S supports with these important characters could be taken into account as something in her favor. But yeah, great vid! Enjoy the holidays for all they’re worth!

Stahl's job is to replace freddy when he starts to fall off in the midgame. Sully's job is to reclass into her secondary classes and then reclass late game into paladin once she's picked up all the skills from her secondary classes.

Having played quite a bit of awakening Stahl needs to be bumped down a tier. He's so incredibly slow that he can often struggle to reliably double on NORMAL, let alone higher difficulties. He keeps ending up benched because he can't kill things.

I can't say I can speak from the experience of maniac mode, but I feel like there's a crazy big gulf in power between Oscar and Keiran in FE9. not only do you get Oscar SO much earlier, not only does he tend to hit more reliably, but there's also the matter of triangle attack to discuss, but I realize that requires dumping resources into Rolfe, who ain't nearly as good as Astrid and that probably makes that a lot less of a conversation. I dunno, man, it feels like when I've tried to use Keiran in my playthroughs, he just cannot hit, even when he has triangle advantage, he whiffs spectacularly and gets me into trouble whenever I have to try and rely on him.

I feel like Sain and Kent should be above Lance and Allen. I mean, Lance and Allen are good, but they never really dominate their game, and they suffer a lot on Hard; their stats just aren't high enough to one-round enemies most of the time without effective weapons. Sain and Kent are going up against much weaker enemies, even on Hard Mode, so they one-round really early and snowball really fast. Plus, you have an earlier second Knight Crest and the Lyn Mode Knight Crest, which means there's less of an opportunity cost. Also, Cain and Abel in the original NES Shadow Dragon are considered some of the best units, for the record. They have bases barely behind Jagen, their growths are so fast that they catch up to him around level 5, and FE1 enemies are pretty garbage. The only units that come close in terms of viability throughout the game are Marth, Hardin, Wendell, and Caeda.

You shouldn’t judge them based on the quirks of their game. You should judge them by how they stand out within the confines of their own game. Lysithea is a great unit in Three Houses, but she wouldn’t shine nearly as bright if you dropped her into FE4, where the mere fact that she isn’t mounted confines her to being a mid-tier unit at best.

How would you rank Luke and Roderick from Mystery of the Emblem? I usually count them as Christmas cavs despite their color scheme not really matching. Same goes for Kaze and Saizo despite them not being cavaliers. Also have a merry Christmas!

Cavs in Awakening get Outdoor Fighter at lvl 10 and it grants +15 Hit/Avoid which is pretty solid since most Awakening maps tend to be outdoors. And both Stahl and Sully have access to the myrmidon class that gives them +10 Avoid skill, in conjunction to Outdoor fighter, giving them +25 avoid and +15 hit, without factoring support bonuses and avoid tiles. They essentially become dodge tanks at that point, which I found very valuable in my Lunatic run. So in a game where forest tiles are scattered all over the map, I find them to be pretty solid. I do have a bias towards Stahl since he tends to hit harder, and Swordmaster tends to fix his speed problem, but you cant really go wrong with either one. For the game they're in, I'm fine with their placements on the tier list, albeit I would put them a tier higher because lol Awakening. Anyways, solid tier list. I agree with it overall. P.S. Thing about Sully and Stahl is that they are made pretty irrelevant by Robin and the royal family long-term in Awakening. Sully *does* join one whole map earlier and is definitely useful there and in the infamous Ch.2 map, which certainly gives her an entire leg up over Stahl, but then immediately after that you get Sumia and forget about the both of them almost as hard as Kellam.

sully gets both wyvern rider and myrmidon which are both really good classes with really good skills. She's also really fast for a cavalier. Stahl actually gets better strength and defense growths as a GK then freddy and also gets myrmidon. so with his higher strength and swordfaire he's actually going to do more damage than freddy.

Sully and Stahl are both solid Units, but I would definitely say Sully is better--she joins one chapter earlier, gets D Lances much earlier which means early Javelin access, and she can Reclass into Wyvern Rider for Strength +2 and some time to work on her Axe rank (Wyvern Rider can then promote to Griffon Rider for Deliverer at Lvl 05 which is great). Stahl meanwhile is just kinda stuck in Cavalier and I'd say he's best promoted into a Paladin thanks to higher Movement and Defender. His Reclass options are pretty subpar, being Archer and Myrmidon. He also takes more time getting to D Lances, being slightly more proficient in Swords which is ho-hum. If I had to rank them, I'd give Sully a mid/high B-Tier and Stahl a low B-Tier.
