I had pretty much exactly this in my first run (10 mov not 12 but still insane), but I remember a moment where Ronan missed 3 out of 4 99% attacks and I had to take a moment to realize what I just saw.

would love to see a version of this for TRS once you finish it. kaga's post-FE games are when he gets by far the most unhinged with the goofy mechanics and i love it. the army split, narron's promotion, shigen's immortality sword, traitor units, mid-map fight scenes between your own characters, healers who can turn into dragons, movement growths, maerhen being able to steal people's entire inventories. the games get so experimental and it makes for such a fun experience imo

You really need to play yourself some Vestaria Saga. He doesn't get crazy (at least in the first one) with the mechanics like he does with TRS or BS. It feels more like a total conversion romhack of GBA-era Fire Emblem almost, like Vision Quest.

@@maltheopia I mean, Vestaria I, yeah, but Vestaria II has some pretty hilarious jank. Spoilers Ahead for Vestaria Gaiden btw: Sujata literally becomes invincible with her first prf once you remove the skill that berserks herself when she hits 1 HP, because she doesn't counter with it, and unlike Shigen's Dulluhan, it doesn't consume a use when preventing her from dying (Since I believe Dulluhan just uses the effect of Azor, hence why it consumes a use when it revives him). There's also a character whose prf literally makes the target invincible (The only use for this is the occasional enemy that you have to capture to get certain events), and you get so many dancing units to the point the endgame is built around chaining dances (You literally get a manual for the skill in Chapter 14) and the buyable Impetus staves from Chapter 17. There's some ridiculous stuff you can do in Vestaria Gaiden and the jank is so, so fun.

the funniest interaction between vantage and wrath is when you use a unit with vantage to EP an enemy with wrath and they just get crit in the face

-wexp should be considered an fe5 mechanic since it introduced it. -I think the relevance of fog of war in fe5 compared to other fog of war is extremely overrated, it really only matters in maps where you can't see the end and where you don't have torches, and that's an entire 1 of them, since you can still see where you can walk anyway. In other maps you're pretty much guaranteed to have a torch so it's only your own fault if you're not using torches in a fog of war map (and torch vision in fe5 is bigger than in other games). -on the 100 staff hit thing, it has been a huge misinformation thing for forever that staff hit caps at 99, when it doesn't. I attempted changing the org wiki to reflect this, then a mod left a note on my edit asking for a source, so I literally found a clip from lapogne's TAS where Saias uses a staff and you can clearly see it not advancing the rng, meaning that it has no miss chance. Ok idk if this is pedantic but 1 FCM does make a difference on the second hit, because first attack crit is always capped at 25, meaning if your FCM is 1 and you have 40 crit, the first attack will have 25 crit and the second will have 40

I like fatigue. In every other games you just cannot play everyone you like in a run. There are 12 slots so if you like 18 characters 6 have to hit the bench. Fatigue makes so you use the whole 18 and more. It need the right game to be in, because missing levelups is crippling in some games, but for the games that can afford it it is a great excuse to rotate between favourites instead of having to ditch some.

The only thing that I don't like about fatigue is that I felt like i had to look up whether indoor/outdoor maps were coming up and where I would need staff users to plan around fatigue/deployment.

I don't know how canon the manga is generally considered to be, but the blizzard sleep thing makes a little sense with how somewhere in the FE4, Lachesis mentions that the sleep staff basically paralyzes a victim's limbs rather than putting them to sleep. So I guess by that line, blizzard tomes just turn you into a sad block of ice? Just a thought.

It could also be the bodily response to cold in real life. Stay in one place to try and warm up, in the case of the Blizzard Tome, at least.

Man, I'm actually on Chapter 4 of Thracia 776. My first playthrough too! So far it's actually pretty fun. One of my most favorite FE's for sure.

I do think capturing should be S tier. The main detracting point is more a way to teach players how to properly capture and why you should be capturing. It increases replayability and really does a great job of adding to the skill cieling of thracia. I definitely over-captured in thracia but that taught me next time how little I actually needed on my next run.

the symbol representing "forced dismount indoors" is the icon for the indoor fighter ability in awakening. it's a weird choice, but i guess there aren't a lot of things in fire emblem that mean "indoors" but it'd be underwhelming if it was just a square of text.

The Lil'Manster Translation for Chapter 4 states that if Leif "Retreats" before everyone else, Fergus says, That everyone else will get captured. Leif then says he'll only "Retreat" once everyone else has "Retreated". This is actually very faithful to the original Japanese Text which also uses highlights on the word for Withdraw and has Fergus say that if leif leaves first everyone else will get captured. The only Text in 776 that forshadows some game mechanic or chapter event that isn't as clear in the Japanese text is chapter 11 with Kempf, It's actually very vague in Japanese what will happen in that chapter.

Great video, Thracia mechanics make the game so fun once you learn them. One you left out is warp tiles. They're not well-liked, but at least you can negate them by taking an action other than Wait when ending your turn on them. Another is enemy factions, I forget if it's just Chapter 13 but there's probably at least one other map where if you kill the boss of one enemy faction its troops will retreat from the map or stop doing anything. Unfortunately I don't think this is ever clearly stated to the player, but it makes a huge difference if you know about it.

A mechanic that I'm a little sad you didn't discuss but I think is really cool from Thracia when it uses it is minimum / "random" deployment. While ch19 is the most obvious example of it being used in the game, and it's probably a little too anti-user for every map, the idea of having maps where you may be forced to deploy weaker units in unfavourable positions and strategize around it reactively helps make some more chaotic maps feel more immersive, and force the player to adapt to a disadvantageous situation.

Saw this recently when scrolling through tier lists so I've had it on the mind. I like that a lot of Thracia's mechanics helps to make units unique like Authority Stars, FCM, the abundance of personal weapons, etc. I definitely wouldn't have bothered with Tina if it weren't for the thief staff, and wouldn't have bothered with Linoan if it weren't for her 5 FCM(and also in my playthrough she grew movement twice in only 4 level ups but that's besides the point). Same goes, honestly, for growing movement, I really wouldn't have used Ronan or Macha otherwise. The only thing that keeps Thracia from being my favorite is that I'm not very good at FE games, when I'm already having trouble with FE8 Hard I'm surprised I finished FE5 at all. I'll play it again eventually but those open chapters especially are exhausting. That being said, Blizzard causing sleep sucks.

Fatigue is a great mechanic for FE in theory, but punishment mechanics like that are so hard to make work. The fact that you can streamroll so many FE games with just a couple of characters is so antithetical to the design and theming of the series so it's nice they at least tried to prevent that. You have this huge cast of colourful (often literally) characters and these thematic elements of building an army, but in reality most of the games end up being mostly three of four gigachads slaughtering people who can barely hurt them by the dozen. The series has moved further and further away from restrictive mechanics so we'll probably never see a good version of a fatigue mechanic, and that's kinda sad.

there's probably a way to balance fatigue better but I really like it theoretically. in practice if you know ahead of time to stock up on S drinks it doesn't do much and can somewhat punishing if blind. creates some value to having so many staff users, redundancy for when some are fatigued. also there's an interesting element of some characters being more easily fatigued. also works with the fact that there are multiple map types where different unit types excel or struggle so there's naturally some cycling there too (but can actually be an issue blind, and maybe that's just a better way to cycle than fatigue specifically) probably could be improved and imperfect as is but I appreciate the thought, but mostly because I knew I had a stock of S drinks in case. the games (newer ones especially) really need more aggressive anti-lowmanning/juggernauting mechanics imo.

One negative about movement levels is that enemies can autolevel extra mov, which is annoying at best but can really mess up a map at worst

hey mekkah, your negative growths run from last year has inspired me to play thracia blind (for the most part). i only watched through chapter 6 of your play through because i wanted to avoid spoilers for the rest of the game. i just finished chapter 11 and from what i heard in this video chapter 12 is a real challenge. love these kinds of videos 💪

Double heal don't deplects staff twice. If your staff is 5/5 and the unit doubles it, it's still 4/5 in the next turn.

im surprised you put fatigue and forever ailments so low tbh. The game gives you ways to deal with status ailments and its the only FE games that really makes use of every item in the game. fatigue is also cool as it makes sense from a story standpoint and makes you not run through the game with OP units.

i once hade a blesssed/cursed lara who managed to have 20con as a dancer (i did the infinit xp trick so i could promote her as fast as possible in hope of getting somone with enough stat as i messed up a bit and got a few caracter dead and forgot dagdar, also it's just funny to me), funiest thing ever i could just send her to steal every weapon and i had a lot of fun with her, she even killed glazus, best unit, best game, 776/10

Ambush spawns/reinforcements can work as an additional threat on an unlocked max difficulty but should never be in general play. There are potentail exemptions - ambush physic only staff bots, ambush units spawned such that they may not act, only move (too far away , treated as using an item as first action canto freely after) on the arrival turn. Edit: now that I think about it I actually like the move only idea even for general use - reinforcements that are positioned in reaction to your units seem better than those that are statically placed upon triggering (move variety for repeat runs etc.)

Over the years i have come to appreciate Thracia and it's importance over Fire Emblem so much that i consider it to be way ahead of it's time and it has become one of my most replayed, even today we see new games using mechanics that were born in Thracia. Its a shame that despite all the homages to eralier games ISIS never thanks Kaga for his work.

Movement level ups are all fun and games until it's the enemy who gets them and breaks formation, forcing the player to frantically check stats and attack ranges. Though the two don't have to coexist, enemy stats being randomized is the actual problem imo.

@@dmas7749 Definitely wouldn't agree. Doubling thresholds in particular are completely up to chance early on and it makes certain units' growth less consistent. 2RKOs and 1HKOs are also unpredictable. Outside of gameplay, this means Thracia is harder to discuss. You can't say for sure how non-top tier characters will perform numerically for the most part, we kinda just all wing it. It doesn't matter most of the time though, that much is true.

- Fucktons of Ballistae: C-Tier Not an awful idea, FE11 shows us how this can work IMO, but FE5 in particular has some other oddities that couple with this to make it more aggravating. - 1% Acc Floor, 99% Acc Cap: A-Tier I really like this, because it pretty much automatically avoids the issue of one Unit always, without question, being your safest answer to something when it comes to combat. Combine this with generally low stats and you make the total roster that much more balanced, I find. - Leadership Stars: S-Tier Excellent edition, really wish FE would bring them back. - Accost: C-Tier I REALLY don't like how FE5 in particular handles it, but TearRing Saga and Berwick Saga IMO should how this can work really well by just making it a command you can use under certain conditions. So the underlying concept's at least fine. - Adept: B-Tier It's Adept as we've always known it. Is a good effect. That's all I've got to say on that. - Ambush Spawns: C-Tier I'd much rather have Ambush Spawns than Fog of War or halved EXP on higher difficulties, but they're still just a cheap surprise that exists to make things more annoying than difficult. Which can work if the story allows for that which FE5's definitely does, but otherwise am not really a fan. - Capturing: B-Tier I wish Capturing wasn't so freeform in FE5 because it can either leave the player feeling incredibly deprived, or slow the game to a crawl and break it in half, but I think a good way to immediately fix that is by just making it an exclusive ability for certain Units, like how Fates does it. - Con Growths: D-Tier I don't like Con at all, 'cuz it feels like a fix to a problem with a much simpler solution, and by proxy I REALLY don't like Con Growths because I'd much rather Con just be a fixed constant if you're gonna have it at all. - Dancing: A-Tier Really good ability for an SRPG like Fire Emblem. ...That's about all I have to say on that. - Capture-Baiting: C-Tier Capturing IMO just doesn't need to be on the enemy side at all, especially in this game since you're fighting a well-equipped army, not a poor ragtag group of idiots like yourself, but using it as a strategic play runs into the same issues Capturing in general does where it either breaks the game in half or just robs you of a good Unit or some good stuff if you misuse it, which is quite easy to do I've found. - Leif abandoning people if he Escapes before anyone else: D-Tier I despise this mechanic. If you want to encourage us to have every Unit Escape on an Escape map, literally just make the objective "Everyone Escapes". There's no good incentive to leaving people behind and I also just don't like locking an extra map behind purposefully having someone Captured Fatigue: A-Tier This makes you use and deploy Units with a bit more thought and greatly encourages you to make use of everyone that you can, which I adore. The one thing I don't like about it is how you can just buy S-Drinks in bulk to render the entire mechanic pointless. I like S-Drinks existing because they can make for a really cool high-value reward, but being able to infinitely purchase them is just too much IMO (sure they're expensive, but what else are you spending money on in FE5?). Fog of War: D-Tier It's a *little* more manageable in other games where you can actually, y'know, SEE the terrain of the map, but Fog of War is still just generally not fun IMO, especially in this game. Forced Dismounting: S-Tier ESPECIALLY with how this game handles it. It plays further into Fatigue by making you either stop playing favorites and trying to make good use of everyone, or to try and get creative with said favorites if you're hell-bent on doing so even in an Indoor Map. Permanent Ailments: C-Tier This games makes it awful, but if you had a Restore Staff or some status-removing Items, IMO it wouldn't be so bad. Infinite Trading: S-Tier One of the few things FE5 invented that's actually stuck around, and boy am I glad it has. Heal-Doubling: B-Tier Am indifferent. Heal-Missing: B-Tier See above. Lethal Poison: D-Tier Especially with permanent ailments, this just plain sucks IMO. No Res: B-Tier Again, am indifferent. Mov Growths; C-Tier I'm more accepting of this than Con Growths (mostly because it exists on a stat that doesn't feel like a pointless edition), but I still prefer when Mov is just a fixed constant. Movement Stars: B-Tier I love the concept, but I don't like how FE5 handles it. If there was some way you could influence your chances of proccing, or if they just took the chance out of it altogether and based it on HP percentages or something, I'd like it much more, because then it'd be a mechanic you could play around and feel smart doing so. As it stands now, I feel like I just got lucky with a dice roll, which does nothing for me. Follow-Up Crit Modifier: S-Tier I wish they'd bring this back, because this is so much fun to mess around with and it's an excellent way to make combat Units even better at their intended job without just doing the boring thing and giving them through-the-roof stats. Crusader Scrolls: C-Tier I don't like Growth boosters that just sit in your Inventory and clutter up space, but if they retooled them into how they retooled FE12's Star Shards, I'd like them a lot more. Blizzard(?): C-Tier Don't like a long-range Sleep attack when said Sleep is also permanent. Infinite-Range Staves: D-Tier Infinite-range Warp and the like just makes map design as a whole royally pointless IMO, and some of these maps are quite fun when you play them straight. Steal: A-Tier Gives Thieves a really good niche outside of just opening Doors, and I wouldn't miss Capturing at all if they still kept Stealing, because making this something only a Thief can do gives them purpose, even on Maps where they otherwise wouldn't have any. Universal Stat Caps: S-Tier Especially if said stat caps are low, because that automatically makes you not care so much about stat growth and instead makes you actually how to use the Unit in a way that doesn't boil down to just "get their stats as high as possible". Vantage: B-Tier I like perma-Vantage. Aside from that, it's just Vantage. Wrath: B-Tier See above, just replaces "Vantage" with "Wrath". Xavier's Recruitment: S-Tier I adore huge recruitment puzzles like these because it's a really good way to make a map interesting to both play and design, and it makes said Unit feel all the more earned, especially if said Unit's pretty good like Xavier.

On the note of Xavier. I know this is not at all efficient, but it makes xavier recruitment MUCH easier. Use the sleep staff you get from salem and put all the armors to sleep with portraits. When you open the doors, none of them will move, and the npcs will go for them anyways. I think you need to bait xavier out first so he doesn't kill the slept armors, but it's not a big deal. Sleep and restore the sleep staff. It's quite reliable

That is a lot of Sleep uses though: 3 sleep, and then a Hammerne use to repair it all. Those are the most limited staves in the game, more limited than Warp. It works for sure but I think the Sleep Sword method is better for resources. If Xavier kills an NPC armor knight that's fine btw, once they turn green their survival is irrelevant for Xavier's recruitment.

I think Dance was added because in FE4, the dancers could refresh 4 surrounding units. It was brought back down to 1 for Thracia (which I guess doesn't make it different than usual).

I've always hated con/build in games that have it with the exception of Thracia (and engage I guess) because I often want to use a unit and then I look at their con and I see that they functionally have a lower speed cap, so no matter how lucky I get, they're gonna be slower in the end with some characters, and I end up just giving them iron weapons/fire the entire game. I don't think what they did for fe 9 and 10 was the best solution, but I prefer everyone (except fe9 Soren) ignoring weight by mid game over everyone who's small being handicapped, if I were to try to "fix" it I'd just 1/2 strength = con but you'd also need to rebalance the weight... or, you know, have con growth lol

Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn use the "strength = con" system. In Path of Radiance, this meant that weight almost never mattered, except on Boyd in the early game and some heavy weapons like armorslayers. The same goes for radiant dawn, with Nephenee being weight down by her weapon in her join chapter, which makes that chapter pretty RNG heavy on hard mode.

I personally like fixed con as I feels it makes units more distinct and makes you think about which weapons to use. I find the systems where weight negation can grow too often end up with weight not mattering past the midgame.

On my first thracia playthrough my leif got, like, 4 move level ups. I always had a soft spot for thracia and leif since then

It's debatable whether Xavier recruitment is harder than FE12 Wolfguard, but it's definitely much more worth it (because FE12 Wolfguard stinks).

The only reason I would not put escape in S tier is that mashing through the escape dialog for every unit every time is a slog. If they ever make a Thracia remake I hope they make something like every unit that can move and has enough movement to reach the escape point when Leif escapes also escapes.

I just started this game yesterday. I must have terrible luck because Eyvel keeps missing the axe brigands with 99 hit. I'm only on the second map and she's missed with 99 probably 10 times.

Honestly I find it really dumb that dismounting forces you to swap weapons (but only for some characters... why do Bow Knights still get to use bows when dismounted?) IMO it should just reduce your stats but you still keep your weapons. Maybe have dismounting reduce your weapon rank, or perhaps being mounted automatically increases your build by a temporary buff so you can wield higher weight weapons without issue, but being dismounted drops your build a bit. That would make more sense than suddenly swapping to a weapon the character doesn't have as much experience with using...

As one of the haters of Thracia i cannot understate how much i wish some it's mechanics were utilized more often. Fatigue to encourage using wider variety of units. Fatigued units could just have reduced stats instead of being underployable so there's still incentive to not deploy them without forcing it on the player. Capturing wasn't done again untill Fates where grand total of 2 units can capture and major characters aren't capturable anyway which is yet another missed opportunity in it's narrative. And most notably lord-having-to-escape-last. The only times i recall this being a thing were some chapters in Telius games where you get bonus exp for it and that's it. It is so underutilized that it makes me think IS hates Thracia more than i do.

I find the capturing “negative” to be really dumb. If you’re compelled to capture units it’s because it gives you pleasure, so you wouldn’t care about it slowing the game down because you’re enjoying the process

Honestly the last optional chapter made anything related to staffs drop to F tier. You can get softlocked so easily there with no warning on your first playthrough and ANYTHING that leads to easy sodtlocks should just not be in a game, end of discussion.

The defenses of some of these mechanics comes down to either "it is funny" or some other way to ignore it. Neither of which actually address the mechanic in question. They are also not arguments for a mechanic to be good either.

I said at the start it's a combination of how funny they are, how good they are design wise, and how they feel for a player both experienced and blind. It's not supposed to be an objective game design ranking.
