I played Persona 5 Strikers, and it was very pleasantly surprising. Let's talk about it, but in an incredibly subjective and arbitrarily sequential fashion.

Man, you are really cold when it comes to Haru. Like Ann and Yusuke on their previous arks, Haru needed a connection for the jail to matter enough and shine through. Ann and Alice had their respective fashion experience in common and Yusuke with Natsume their own form of art. Haru took over her father's business when he was killed by Aketchi. Mariko had to deal with the death of a little girl happenning on her watch because her crew and colleagues were corrupted. Haru has been involved in more death storylines than any of the phantom thieves. She may appear reserved and sweet, but, in reality, like her weapon, Haru is really tough. Also, have you noticed her sharp comebacks and remarks when they first meet Zenkichi? She slays him with grace. The fountain moment was a powerful one when we first see glimpses of her mourning her father and realising she doesn' t want the story repeated with someone so close to her like Mariko. Also, when she takes over the wheel and she becomes this maniac driver shows another aspect of her personality. A wierd, but funny one. And thinking about the heartache she has gone through, she is entitled to be a little bit odd and inappropiate at times. She didn t have a chance to shine enough, but, after playing the game twice, if you observe enough you can see she is a fun and fully understood character you can invest into. Battlewise now, the spinning wheel she does on 1 more is fast enough to get away from certain attacks and she can be utilized as an ailment caster as well getting all sorts of technical hits on foes. She may not be as fun or easy to play as other characters, but she is a decent tool destined to excel on certain situations. I get that up to the point you reach Sapporo jail, things tend to a little repetitive, but I don t think this is too bad. You come across different enemies and new personas you can add to your collection. And the music is like it came out of a fairytale. Mariko's shadow being fat and greedy, while herself isn't, may be stereotypical, but at least a chubby character is included. Also, she is an ice queen, which is far superior than the representation greed had in Persona 5 that was the disgusting fly monster Kaneshiro.

I understand where you're coming from, but to me it feels like you're kind of just re-stating everything I already said but putting it in a positive light instead. Believe me, I understand all the points you're making, but it just... didn't grab me in this game as much as the other characters did. I *like* Haru, okay? I promise I do, but for whatever reason that I can't really pinpoint, she just doesn't work for me as much in this game. I am, however, very happy that everyone else seems so pleased about her, I just wish I could share the sentiment.

I agree with the Tree of Knowledge and the Abyss jails being slightly disappointing. They're too short for final dungeons for me. I guess that's just how they are since they don't have cores and stuff to find before moving on to the final areas, but after Osaka, I was looking forward to larger dungeons. Oh well. I beat the game and loved it regardless. It was well-executed and kept that distinct Persona 5 flavor.

Alice’s whole story wasn’t that she was just bullied, what cause her to truly break was that the bully came back to try and ruin her career as it was just starting. The internet can be very unforgiving with rumors, even if they turn out to be false, so of course she would want to retaliate. I do agree that Natsume is better, but give credit where it’s due with Alice.

I am a HUGE sucker for the icons for some reason, they really convey the feeling of each ruler/monarch perfectly, whether it be as threatening as Kamoshida with the pose he strikes, or as melancholic as Futaba's or Maruki's, or hell, even the way Shido looks in his icon, perfectly capsulate his character as an oppressor, to show that he IS pulling the strings (Though...Yaldabaoth exists lol). Personally, I would've done something similar to Mementos Depths' Palace icon, but instead of like, a huge blob of people trampling over each other, I would've done a line of people staring down at their phones with the EMMA icon on screen. But I do like the fact you made EMMA the icon too.

The only things I disliked about this game was 1. Mariko's monster transformation immediately made me think of Shark Tale and I couldn't shake the thought at all. 2. The switch version didn't have any trophies so when the game ended, it was just... over. I desperaty wanted to play more but playing more felt like a waste of time since it seemed like it wouldn't amount to anything. My favorite part honestly was the final calling card! Ok, loved the review. I agree with more of the arguments than I expected. Why the heck did the outro sound so sad to me though, like you weren't doing another video, despite saying you were doing another video? I have no clue why that hit me like that. Either way, can I just mention the fact that Akira Konoe, one has one of the two canon names that Joker has which I see you picked unlike me and two that he basically pulls a more epic Vader scene than I ever expected. Just, lightsaber... I love it though. The suit even reminds me of Vader and I am not the big fan of star wars this makes me sound like. Also I am a bit surprised that you never mentioned the funny bit after defeated Natsume in the cutscene right after. I still find that scene funny. And who else picks the cheesy lines every time in his dungeon just because you can?

I like the idea of Akira Konoe more than the execution, mainly because it feels like missed potential. He suffers from the debilitating condition of "not-even-endgame-boss in a breezy summer adventure spinoff game". He's Akechi in Vanilla, a roadblock to endgame that you just kind of hop over and never think about again -- except he's not even taken as sympathetically when he has the more coherently written motivation and backstory! Of course setting him up to be any more serious, dangerous, or morally challenging is perhaps tonally inappropriate for a what they were going for, but it means that the talking points get absolutely dominated by ... you guessed it, the better written villains of P5(R). (As an aside: We don't need more Yaldabaoth, Izanami, or Demiurge. It's getting lazy now. Maruki already feels like the peak of the 'choice verus safety' moral argument so any more rehashing is going to feel like a downgrade. Strikers gets a pass since it was developed concurrently with Royal, but future Persona games should probably pick something substatially different for their final boss or message.)
@hasturcomeforth1433
@hasturcomeforth1433 2 жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely right. I probably should have made it more clear that I very much think the villains from the previous game are better, but while I may like Konoe a *little* less almost a year later, I still think he’s pretty raw, I appreciate how much badass energy he brings to the table in his boss fight, at the very least. Maruki is just the peak of Persona villains in general, but your point still stands. It’s not *bad* in this game either, but I am definitely with you on wanting to see something totally different. Strikers in general just does more of the same where Royal tried something new, which is why I make no mistake that I still vastly prefer P5R.

@@hasturcomeforth1433 well it’s hard for me to play the base game without thinking of how characters like Haru are given more screentime in a sequel, so I can’t say that Strikers deserves to live in the shadow of the base game. In my persona opinion (lol, puns) here's how I'd rank them from worst to best: Onikawa: Easily the most tedious platforming parts among the dungeons make this my least favorite to at least play. People who played this game know that I'm talking about those hooks in the warehouse rooms that move so slowly. The fact that you need to get through it multiple times to get all the optional challenges done makes it all the more wonderful. By wonderful, I mean I wonder why this was the best they could do for one of the most lore-relevant dungeons in the game, especially considering what's to follow. If there's one positive to be had aside from the awesome plot significance, (like, seriously, talking down what is arguably Sophia's Shadow levels of awesome) it's the fact that there are no searchlights to dismantle. It's really short and doesn't overstay its welcome too much, as little of it as there is. Jail of the Abyss: Speaking of short jails, what disappointed me about this one is that this is supposed to fulfill the role of Mementos. That's sad because it gives us hardly any time to enjoy it. The level design is simplistic compared to previous dungeons, and there's definitely a point to be made when it doesn't do the unsettling atmosphere and the awesomeness of Sophie getting her actual Persona justice. I put it above Onikawa, though, because there's no waiting game; Onikawa is the only one with moving platforms. Thank Igor for that. Sappiro: I hate the cold. Winter levels rarely appeal to me unless it's from a Soulsbourne game for some reason. (And even then, they can sometimes screw it up) The atmosphere here is a bit too bland for something like Persona 5, I don't like the part where my vision was obscured by fog - which by the way is why I don't like certain winter levels - and while I only died to the upgraded version of Mariko once, it was pretty frustrating when she ate me. It's actually gluttony that she represents, but a unique form of gluttony. She represents a hunger for power, instead of money like the first Persona 5's interpretation of Gluttony. I did personally feel for her considering how traumatic it was to have killed a child by complete accident. That's just me, but aside from that, there is a bit of fun to be had; the snowboarding part was honestly kinda entertaining, especially when you knock against a Shadow with it. Aside from that, I'd give this one the cold shoulder. Shibuya: I have to admit, Alice is someone I knew right from the start would be a Shadow boss. She was quite out of left field, but I didn't expect her to be actually kinda sympathetic. It's a little confusing how it ended up making her into this... Lady Gaga type figure with over-the-top fashion sense, but high school bullies are the worst. Though to be fair, so is dying against the first boss fight so close to beating it, but I digress. As for the level design itself, it doesn't have a lot of staying power, but it does its role of a first level well enough. It eases you into its mechanics, the atmosphere is what you'd expect for a Persona game and even a bit surprisingly surreal, and it introduces you to some new concepts for the worldbuilding. I love that awesome "Joker vs Many Shadows" moment prior to the palace infiltration and totally wish there were more parts like that. Just as well, the return of the mass-broadcast calling card was badass. But starting off the game with a sewer level wasn't the best choice. Sewer levels seem to be sub-par compared to most other settings. Maybe it's the claustrophobia or how gross it is down there. Guess you could say it's "bunny" how life works sometimes... No, I don't know what that means. Tree of Knowledge: As this is the endgame dungeon, I suppose there's only so much you can do to wrap up a plot centered around media desensitization. But if you're gonna do so with a signal tower, that's fine. I just wish you committed to it more. It's only 4 floors long, and I'm not gonna lie, I kinda wish there were more floors, like twice that size. It's a shame there isn't more to it because I find the whole "tree roots infesting a giant building" motif somehow pretty neat. As for the final boss, I do think it could have been a great opportunity to bring back Satanael; I'm glad that they used an All-Out Attack to finish it, but Persona 5 without Satanael wold be like Bayonetta without a giant demon finishing a god. My three teams went as such; Team 1: The Founders - Ryuji, Anna and Morganna; Team 2: The Rooks - Yusuke, Makoto and Haru. Team 3: Future - Joker, Zenkichi and Sophie. Sendai: What is it with most cities in this having an S in its name? Anyway, this is easily my favorite First Act jail for one particular reason; it's where Yusuke is the most useful! You and I can agree that Haru is a low-tier Phantom Thief in terms of musou gameplay, but Yusuke is one of my mains when I'm not grinding levels for the others. He's literally just Vergil with a Stand, and if you can time his counters correctly, he can be OP. Despite Natsume being the more shallow of the three sub-monarchs, its his personality that makes him memorable in my opinion. He's such a wannabe that it's just silly. He even drops character along with his armor during the boss fight. And aside from making good use of Yusuke, my favorite part is the Palace. It may seem like a typical castle, but for some reason I like the feel there. Guess you can't beat the classics; too bad Natsume took that too far. Kyoto: Strange how the shorter ones were criticized for their shortness only to put Kyoto this high up, huh? But it ranks so high up because of what it does with the small amount of time it has. 1: Capture the Phantom Thieves so that Zenkichi can have his time of glory. And to confront his distressed daughter. On a side note, Valjean is one of the most awesome looking initial Personas in the whole series. 2: Have you solve some teleportation puzzles that you become more efficient in once you understand the pattern. That's just plain satisfying there. 3: Have the boss fight against yourself. I love the mirror match trope, and if your copy had his own Persona too, he'd be easily the best boss in the game. But it's still pretty awesome to see knives clashing regardless. If the point was to get you to the finale quickly, it did so in a surprisingly awesome way. Osaka: The only major problem with this dungeon was that it wasn't the true endgame dungeon. The subsequent dungeons didn't even stand a chance to beat it. Shadow Konoe is just Evil Iron Man. The technology within the cognitive city, the power armor, the chad beard. And like Stark, his ego is the size of his huge tower. And surrounding that tower is some of the best aesthetics in the game, some cool looking crab robots, complex obstacles to circumvent and possibly the best means of farming for money and Bonds. Speaking of Iron Man, I'm sure Tony Stark's dad cared for him deep down inside, but there is no denying Mr. Konoe is as evil as they come. Granted, so is taking away free will, but Akira had it really bad as a kid. And at least such motives made for by far the best boss fight in the game where you get the satisfaction of zapping a giant mech with a laser cannon and then fight the knight, preferably with the Norse hero Thor. Like I said if you gotta grind for money, at least you have a fun playground to do it in.

Great video firstly. Well here's what I have to say about Haru, I found her quite fun to play cause like you said she's a punish character who specializes in CC that basically gives her super armor. Boss fights aren't really her thing but in the lock keeper fights and Kuon's boss battle and huge horde battles she's pretty much invaluable. What separates her from Ryuji and Zenkichi is that once she starts her attack she can't be interrupted unless she straight up dies. Ryuji has to do his special first before he gets the super armor effect. In short she's the berserker, just give her some health and En and she'll be good to go. Just ripping though and not worrying about stagger is the fun part about her As for her personality I think you missed the point for this game she's not dense, she's a closet sadist. She just enjoyed watching them squirm and that's what they focused on I feel, especially after seeing her interactions with Zenkichi. As for Mariko her fight can go really south, really fast on the + versions and Merciless(Well this can be applied to all of the first 3 bosses) mainly cause she likes to span dinnertime which your A.I team members can easily get caught in and once you run out of chandeliers the only way to free them is to knock her down, but by that point they're usually at 1 hp. Then her Mabufudyne is stupid fast and might as well be an OHKO. But I agree with everything else about the dungeon though.

I did mention Haru's super armor, but it just annoys me that you have to spend time unlocking it as a Master Art when it really should have been a core part of her kit. That said, I don't think you're necessarily wrong in any part of that breakdown, I just... I'd rather play other characters ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And I am fully aware Haru has a sadistic streak, that's part of what makes her fun, but I dunno, that just wasn't really what I was getting from a lot of her scenes in this game. She just felt... off, like I said. It's hard to describe. I still like her though.

@@hasturcomeforth1433 I agree, I actually think a lot of the characters have the same issues as Haru, as something that should be a part of the base kit. For example Joker's special eats up bullets, so early on he can become virtually useless in long battles. Ryuji moves way to slow so he's virtually unwieldy until he gets his speed up, Ann doesn't get Tarunda of all things until her 4th and I believe Yusuke can't even spam until his second master art. I personally think the master art system should have been unlocking purely more character specific move combos, maybe some that involved interweaving L1 and the gun into them to make the character even more different.

It's really good at teaching you what to do, it's fairly complex layout-wise so you get a grip how to navigate this game, it does stellar job at what it aims to do and I can't overstate how important that is to "capture" the player. I have mixed feelings about both plot, pacing and sometimes voice acting in this game, but Alice had hands down best performance in the game, even if pacing is kinda off (but I liked it being "off", I liked the very sudden spin with the trauma n shit) she sells it incredibly fucking well. And theme is absolute bop, I'm biased and I don't care. Also playing on hard and not having proper party with me and refusing to use ones that abuse her weakness (because i liked playing haru and makoto more than skull and Morgana lmao) was really humbling experience, Alice proceeded to kick my teeth in for so long game offered me easier mode. Fuck you game, don't tell me what to do. Suffice to say getting bodied like this was breath of fresh air I haven't experienced in awhile (rabid soulslike fan, got gud, souls 2ez4me) and since it's real time combat you can git gud, it's not just grinding stats and optimizing fight to the max, you can dodge and hit. Alice is late enough in the game for you to know a bit so you can both enjoy the fight and understand why are you getting mauled. It's just mechanically so fucking good, so well balanced, so cleverly crafted. I think you unfairly write it off as simple, there is way more to this level, it's excellent teacher, one of better I've ever seen. Wish half games out there were half this good at organically teaching you how to play them.

Yeah, it's really cool. Alice's Jail is by no means bad, just not as memorable as the other ones for me. Definitely great from a gameplay perspective for the reasons you stated, though.

10:06 actually, both Purple Fly Mafia Man and Mariko represent gluttony and not greed. However, that's why I dislike Shadow Mariko the most out of all the monarchs: it feels forced. I feel like her being fat is just because "haha third dungeon go food", and "I'll eat all the votes" doesn't make any sense.

Exactly. Kaneshiro represents the actual definition of gluttony: hoarding everything for yourself, even taking away from others, even though you have no possible need for everything you're taking. Mariko on the other hand just uses lazy shorthand for her "symbolism" and plays into the cliched definition of gluttony. You're right though, I did say greed in my script, that was my mistake.

Well it's hoarding votes, her eat or be eaten mindset with her subordinates and thinking they will betray her no matter if they are good or bad, and I guess her wanting all the power and control of Sapporo even if "she" thinks she can do the best for the city and not anyone else having power. I will say despite liking the Sapporo arc, not a big fan of the Gluttony theming.

Here’s my review with details in it 8:jail of the abyss: everything’s bad about it it’s like persona 5s final jail the music is the weakest and its just not as interesting 7: Sapporo jail: while the music is good it’s honestly not too interesting also the boss scares me😨 6: shibuya jail: it does good with music and is an okay first jail but it’s not as fun as the other jails. 5:tree of knowledge: it’s not the best ending but the palace theme is so good and brings in a good final boss. 4: Okinawa jail: a good and unexpected jail has good music and has a good story ark in it. 3: Sendai jail: has probably some of the best jail music is this and is downright in my opinion the most creative jail taking the book prince of nightmares and bringing it to life with natsumes family and natsume boss is amazing however the enemies you experience in this is *ugh* 2: Osaka jail: has honestly another great music track in the jail a great boss at the end of the jail first boss to use the song counterstrike and the amazing textures put into the jail is just so 🔥 1: Kyoto jail: has the best jail music I ever heard in the game great character development between zenkichi and akane a amazing story ark and more amazing ness!

Also I would argue that while yes Konoe is better than Akechi, I highly think he is not as good as Maruki. Maruki isn't some hero who wants to save the world, he is a traumatized man who does not want to see others go through pain, plus I really love the philosophical dilemma presented in the third semester which is something Konoe would never really bring to the table, yes he IS challenging the Phantom Thieves' on a moral sense, Maruki however challenges us, the player if what we were doing the entire game was truly just, and if Maruki, might be right.

Oh he absolutely isn't as good as Maruki lol. I tried to make that clear in this video, but I didn't make a huge deal about it, which was why I clarified it in my next video. I definitely think Maruki is a cut above Konoe, and I could really go on about him for hours. I talk about Maruki a lot at the end of that video, so you should really go watch that (wink wink) if you want to hear more, but trust me, I am nowhere *near* done with Maruki or Persona 5 Royal as a whole. Thanks for the comment!

Oh my god, I am so glad I found someone who appreciates Maruki as much as I, he is hands down the most realistic, the most well developed, and the most tragic character I have ever seen. Have you ever considered making a discord, by any chance? If so I would love to be an active part of your community.
