The moaning vocal style on Into the Pandemonium is a personal tribute to Ross Williams of Christian Death. A masterpiece of an album in my eyes. I also love post-punk and goth and Christan Death, so great. The real problem for me with Cold Lake is: 1. The weak and thin/poor production 2. Toms voice style 3. Image and song titles. But the essence is Celtic Frost as far as riff style and compositions.

6. Cold Lake 5. Vanity/Nemesis 4. Into The Pandemonium Distinguished them from everything els at the time. Daring and original. I believe this album was a huge influence so many Goth Metal/Symphonic Black Metal bands. Love it. Interchangeable with number 3. 3. Monotheist 2. Morbid Tales 1. To Mega Therion. On a side note - The Emperor's Return version of Circle Of The Tyrants is my all time favorite Celtic Frost track ever!

Monotheist (As an old Frost fan I haven't given this one the listening to I really should have - but I vow I will) 5. Vanity/Nemesis 6. Cold lake Also "Parched with thirst am I and dying" has some great original tracks you can't find elsewhere. And Hellhammer's "Apocalyptic Raids" really should be considered for this list as both mainstays of CF were on this precursor to Morbid Tales.

When i was 14/15 i first heard Morbid Tales, and i had that album in my CD player for months, it was that awesome. It is still one of my favorite Black Metal albums ever. I guess I'm in the minority but I love Into the Pandemonium and I rank it high on my list. I'm guessing people do not hold it in such high regards because it is too Avant-garde sounding, and it being such a departure from To Mega Therion. I dig the album now than I did then, perhaps because I am into 80s goth rock as well. It is an album where you either love it or hate it.

Lisa's husband, Andy here. I have to disagree with some of what is said here. Back in the eighties Into the Pandemonium and Voivod's Dimension Hatross totally stand out as the best 'extreme' metal of its time. I agree when I first heard this album I said what the 'f'' is this? Genius, different and ahead of its time, that's what it was. I miss the eighties and these guys were considered as thrash metal then but with the two albums I have mentioned, you can't go wrong if you want to test the boundaries in every sense. All the best from the U.K. 👍

Cold Lake didn't kill them. They were never that popular to begin with. They were a underground cult fav but they never sold much. So that album may have disappointed the older fans but they really didn't have much to lose. Tom only looks bad on it because it didn't work. But at the time he said we wasn't selling albums so we said fuck it and did Cold Lake. We had bills to pay and were desperate. Gotta respect the honesty. Sadly the comeback album sold worst than all of them. Just wasn't meant to happen for this band.

Celtic Frost are such a rewarding, yet frustrating band. From really strange misguided creative changes to constant lineup changes. The first two albums (MT, TMT) are incredible records. I really like ITP though and was really excited to see where their new sound might go next. But then we got Cold Lake. Oof. Then they kinda went out with a somewhat return to form with V/N. I was really excited when they released Monotheist and at first I loved that album. But it just did not hold my interest for very long and I find the Drop A, or whatever tuning that is, to be rather annoying after awhile. But all in all it was a pretty strong release. Once again I was looking forward to see where they would go next...THE END. I kind of think of Triptykon as the continued legacy of CF, much they way CF was for Hellhammer. But for CF proper, my rankings are 6) Cold Lake, 5) Vanity/Nemesis, 4) Monotheist, 3) Into the Pandemonium, 2) Morbid Tales, 1) To Mega Therion. Cheers!

Gotta give some kudos for Pandemonium - I hated stuff like "One In Their Pride" or "Tristesses De La Lune" at first back then, but as I was too lazy to skip 'em, they grew on me. In hindsight, those tracks may even helped to pave ky way into Electronic/Hip-Hop, who knows. Anyway, for me, it's always been Sssseltic, not Keltic.

Morbid Tales was Heavy, but To Megatherion even won the critics over . I always have considered them a Death Metal band . Lyrically and musically they're closer to Obituary and Morbid Angel than Marduk . They had songs about Absu, Tiamat and Azagthoth which became prevalent in Death Metal. Tom didn't have a raspy Donald Duck Vocal, nor did they sing much about Christian Satanism, or play a lot of fast tremolo picking type of riffs. Other than some bad production quality there was little to relate their music to second wave Norwegian Black Metal. Even the production standards when measured by Black Metal standards, Celtic Frost albums were state of the art .

Agree with this, although I wouldn't say there a death metal exactly. They sound like a primordial stew of extreme metal. I hear elements of death, doom, black, thrash and sludge but I wouldn't call them any of those. Such a unique and great band.

Hellhammer made the Black metal Sound on Satanic Rites.

@@bluewinter6660 I have the Satanic Rites demo. To me it sounds like Traditional NWOBHM early Saxon type Metal performed with a very limited amount of musical skills, and recorded on a cheap cassette player boombox ghetto blaster portable stereo with dirty heads. Sometimes music is labeled Punk, or Black Metal just because the sound quality is horrible. This was amateur Traditional Metal played by guys with primitive musical skills and recorded poorly. The only reason it was associated with Black Metal is by accident, they were struggling to sound like Angel Witch and wound up sounding like a very poor amateur type of Garage Punk Rock band. If you only like Black Metal performances by novice level musicians that are recorded extremely bad, I guess that this is as Kvlt as Fvck . Personally I only own the Satanic Rites demo for the novelty of liking Morbid Tales and To Megatherion when they sounded like a Real band. I find all of Hellhammer difficult to listen to, other than the pure unique style of the Apocalyptic Raids rendition of the song Triumph of Death I find that they were an awful band. Celtic Frost is Heavier, more atmospheric, produced better, and just more interesting than the Hellhammer project. As far as badly produced Necro Black Metal performed with out of tune guitars I prefer Dark Evil bands that don't sound like absolute cheap garbage. Bands like Demonic Christ, and Acheron are just as Evil without sounding like low fi trash. Albums are expensive, I don't know any good reason to spend $20 on something that probably cost $1 to record. If I just want to waste money and listen to noise, I will just sit down by a construction site and make a bonfire out of $100 bills. That makes about as much sense as buying a bunch of tinny sounding low fi Necro Black Metal Albums. At least I can actually hear the sounds of the jackhammers are making. Probably clearer than the drums on a lot of Black Metal Albums

Should you ever decide to do a "Albums that Killed A Band " or "Albums A Band Couldn't Recover From" Cold Fake. .I mean Lake .. would definitely be there. They were destined for greater things and suddenly they decide to be Motley Frost? Wtf?

It's a whole different beast. Honestly more of a Traditional Metal record. Kinda sounds like a mashup of early Crue and late 80s Priest. I dig it a lot and it's probably my favorite record in their discography.
