Great to find a review of Cream as one of my all time favourite bands. When I was about 14 years old I heard Live Cream Vol 2 and it changed everything!! The live versions of 'Tales of brave Ulysees' and 'Deserted Cities' still blow me away and are arguably the spark and influence for a whole heap of hard rock bands that followed on just after they disbanded.

1. Disraeli Gears 2. Wheels of Fire 3. Fresh Cream 4. Goodbye - love those studio tracks, but only 3 of them. Badge of course featured cowriter George Harrison on guitar. Notice the similarity with the riff in the bridge to Here comes the sun. Anyone who hasn't seen it should check out the Documentary Beware Mr. Baker. Quite revelatory. I always though Jack Bruce was the A hole in Cream. I can understand why Ginger had a hard time finding people to play with him later in his career. Thanks for a cool ranking video Pete. Cheers.

Man, I wish Cream stuck around for longer! They are one of the greatest live bands of all time and their studio material is fabulous too, more brutish than just about anyone else at the time, and even today. Here’s my ranking: 1. Wheels Of Fire (1968) - as musically interesting as Disraeli is, this is even more so. Even without the magnificent live disc, this would still be my number one, and it would easily make my top 10 albums of all time. 2. Disraeli Gears (a landmark album in psychedelic rock and in the creation of hard rock and heavy metal! Still kicks ass!. 3. Fresh Cream (1966) - a very notable debut, but I feel like many of the songs reach their true potential when performed live. 4. Goodbye (1969) - not a bad album by any means, and I feel that ‘Doing That Scrapyard Thing’ and ‘What A Bringdown’ are fun and vastly under appreciated songs. Here’s my top 10 Cream songs also, including some of their terrific blues covers: 1. Spoonful (Wheels Of Fire) 2. N.S.U. (Live Cream, Volume I) 3. Outside Woman Blues 4. Strange Brew 5. Born Under A Bad Sign 6. Sitting In The Top Of The World 7. Those Were The Days 8. I’m So Glad (Goodbye) 9. SWLABR 10. Passing The Time

Cream are my 1st ever favourite band! Great post. My list: 1) Wheels Of Fire 2) Fresh Cream 3) Disraeli Gears 4) Goodbye
@dt19784 жыл бұрын
This one is almost impossible. All four, especially the first three, were absolutely brilliant; depending on my mood, they could change at anytime. Geez. Here's my ranking (for now): #4. Goodbye - obviously, this was going to rank at the bottom. Badge is clearly the best on here. Here it gets REAL difficult. #3. Disraeli Gears - The first Cream album I ever bought. Features many bona fide classics. #2. Fresh Cream - Fiery, passionate, tasteful and soulful. Not a single weak tune on here. I'm ranking this second, as I listen to this one a little more than DG. #1. Wheels of Fire - This ranks at the top spot specifically for the studio album disc. I never cared much for the live disc, to be honest. I always thought Cream were better to WATCH live, as opposed to just merely hearing them live, if that makes any sense. Nos. 2 and 3, especially, could easily switch places.
@PhilBaird14 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that Pete. Had they stayed together a few more years and put out a few more albums they could have been spoken of as the greatest rock band ever; but perhaps all that ability just couldn't be contained. Three fantastic musicians but Jack Bruce was the real genius. His bass playing controlled the direction and tempo and held the whole thing together on stage; his voice had a wonderful range and power; and an inspired and unique songwriter with the poetry of Pete Brown's lyrics. Jack went on to create the most interesting solo work of the three; developing the music that he'd started with Cream. His first few albums in particular are works of real beauty. If Eric and Ginger had given Jack the reins, then artistically and creatively Cream had a real future, but it wasn't to be. One of the greatest live bands ever, just on their playing ability alone, without stage tricks or effects.

@sdgakatbk4 жыл бұрын
No wrong answer on this but here's my guess: 1. Disraeli Gears 2. Wheels of Fire 3. Goodbye 4. Fresh Cream Sometimes with a group like Cream, looking back, people often aren't aware of how great this band really was. Either they weren't alive or there have been so many bands that came after them that they influenced that it gets lost. I remember hearing them for the first time. It got your attention because NOBODY sounded like them! Kind of like a kid in the 50's hearing Chuck Berry's Maybellene on the am radio for the first time. I definitely agree about early Clapton as I like the rock stuff better. I had Disraeli Gears back in the day and I remember getting kicked out of an empty classroom when I was playing the album while exams were going on. As to Clapton's playing, I like his work with Cream the best, though I haven't listened to John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. I like some of his work with the Yardbirds too. As to albums with Clapton on them, my fave has to be the Layla album with Derek and the Dominoes with Duane Allman. I didn't realize Jack Bruce played with Robin Trower. Why Dontcha by West, Bruce, and Laing was a good album, Jack playing with Leslie West and Corky Laing, both from Mountain. One of my favorite tunes that Bruce played on is Apostrophe with Frank Zappa. It was a jam session that Jack got in because he knew Jim Gordon who was playing with Zappa at the time.

Disraeli Gears Fresh Cream Wheels of Fire Goodbye I think Pete got this one exactly right. People always talk about how influential Cream was and in the next breath mention Clapton or Baker. If you're asking me, I think Bruce was the most important one when you think of the Cream sound. Whenever I hear a song that reminds me of Cream, the reason it reminds me of them relates to the bass and to a lesser extent how the bass and drums worked together.

chazblitz - No Spirit ranking I’m afraid as I don’t own all of their discography. However, I do own all of the Jo Jo Gunne releases and four members of that group were also one time members of Spirit - Jay Ferguson, Mark and Matt Andes and Al Staehely. Not a particularly successful or enduring band but Jo Jo Gunne released four decent albums in the 1970s - though ‘Big Chain’ (2005) was disappointing. Posted a playlist over a year ago on SoT which may be of interest. :D Run Run Run kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYDMYXysaq9na8U Where Is The Show kzbin.info/www/bejne/noq8oXidr5Z3Y6M At The Spa kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4nZpmqGitxkatU To The Island kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4PZqX54qJeam6M Rock Around The Symbol kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2G7lJKGoqyld9U Getaway kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJK8nXamoJ6jgck I’m Your Shoe kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoPbg6B6mcpngqc High School Drool kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5_Pq2uLoLKHsLM Broken Down Man kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmaokqiIZ66prNU Couldn’t Love You Better kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z53GfZqKjb17qNE Shake That Fat kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmW3Zpesg6aqrZY Single Man kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXm2iKWar956aqc Take It Easy kzbin.info/www/bejne/bX7VcnqIj5ykgas Wait A Lifetime kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGTRm6eGrqZro9E Flying Home kzbin.info/www/bejne/mH6rYmygZ8llpck Barstow Blue Eyes kzbin.info/www/bejne/poPHg2WDa8eKbqM Academy Award kzbin.info/www/bejne/gouxl3aCZbuZf6M Big Busted Bombshell From Bermuda kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYOmi5aMqb2LnJY Making The Sparks Fly kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZ-9pKWelpKkns0 Perfect Everything kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHTFfZKteKmLiZY

Of course it really sucks knowing that both Baker and Bruce are gone. I would probably have to go back and listen to them all again to make my ratings but I will say, I agree that they all are really good collections are tunes.

Can't wait for the Jimi Hendrix video, any chance of a Stevie Ray Vaughan video at some point?

It's hard to argue with you on Clapton on "safer" stuff. He was my 1st concert in 1983. 1. Disraeli 2. Fresh (including Wrapping Paper and Stepping Out) 3. Wheels 4. Goodbye I liked Live 2 better than Live. Sweet Wine was a little too long when I 1st heard it.

1. Disraeli Gears 2. Fresh Cream 3. Wheels of Fire 4. Goodbye. Some people think the inspiration for Animal of the Muppets was Keith Moon. It was obviously Ginger Baker.

Hey Pete - How could you omit the 2005 Royal Albert Hall cd/dvd. The best version ever of "We're Going Wrong".

The few instances I got the Best Of because of Singles content that's not on the album Anyone For Tennis and Wrapping Paper. It's all soo awesome!!! Wheels Of Fire is my fav. But the only reason for that is because it's longer. Live love Love the jamming. They are all equally great in their own way I think!!!! Also Gingers Stratovarius is probably my fav. Of his stuff.
