I rank Innuendo at the top spot. It’s simply pure genius. A direct return to queens roots type of kick ass rock’n roll. Every single song on it is great, there’s rockers, some proggish and epic ballads, basically every facet of music style that represents queen is on Innuendo. Also it is without a doubt the best farewell album going out on top by any band. Considering Freddie’s failing health props to him struggling during the 2 years that it took to get the album finished he literally was starring death in the eye and vowed to work till he dropped. Listening to this masterpiece you would never know that he was so seriously ill and close to death he was a sheer professional to the end.

A friend of my mum (a Mr. Harding) lived in the same road as Roger Taylor and his mum. When Queen had recorded 'Queen I' he came to his house to tell Mr. Harding that he was in a new band and they were releasing their first album. Everybody has their blind spots, bands or artist that one should like but cannot connect to for reasons unknown. I heard Killer Queen back in 1974 and went out to buy Sheer Heart Attack. I played it for a while but soon forgot about it. Then came Bohemian Rhapsody and of course I loved it and some other songs on the album were good as well. All the other records I listened to but never cared much about. The hits that came on the radio, they never meant anything to me. It is not that I hate them or never tried to find out why they are so great, I did many times. The magic spark never hit me. Tragic, but since there is so many other good music around I survived to this day. My list is short. 1. A Night at the Opera (the only Queen album I still listen to from time to time) 2. Sheer Heart Attack 3. Queen (First) PS - Paul Rodgers is one of my favourite singers since the days of Free in the early 70s. Great list. I can understand the problem with first ranks. My list would be: 1. Sheer Heart Attack A total work of art. Tenement Funster, Flick of the wrist and lily of the valley with the seamless transitions would be sufficient for first rank. Not a single bad track on the album. 2. A Night at the Opera Close second. 39 and Prophet's song are genius, but I hate sweet lady and You're my best friend is kind of boring. So 2nd. 3. Queen II White queen, Ogre Battle, The March of the black queen. Need I say more? 4. Jazz The last really great album until Innuendo. Mustapha is so much fun. 5. Innuendo I'm going slightly mad, These are the days of our lives, The show must go on and the corresponding videos are just heartbreaking. 6. Made in Heaven Yes, it is slower and not as extrovert as the others. But Freddie knew, he was slowly diyng and still recorded great songs like Mother love or Made in Heaven. Maybe musically not up there with the others, but a very decent goodbye and Freddies voice still gives me chills. „I long for peace before I die“

Fantastic job, Pete. This IS just like talking to friends about our favorite bands. Queen provided the soundtrack of my teen years, and I have had the pleasure of seeing them live supporting the Night at the Opera album. They are a true original.

I had the privilege of seeing Queen at the Glasgow Apollo, Scotland in 1979 and Mercury's voice was beyond comprehension. A 3,000 seater and when I tell people here in Bulgaria, younger people, I have often been asked if they can touch me! Best album? Queen II within a hearbeat.

I have always been a huge Prog lover but I never been a big fan of Queen. They just never clicked for me. I dig their diversity and the musicianship, and Mercury's range but except for the second album and 'News' I have never really give them much thought. That said 'Innuendo' is a brilliant album. What a Swan Song by Mercury, saying his farewells knowing he wasn't long for the world. I love this album... excellent Prog.

Queen isn't prog and were never considered prog back in the day...must be a 21st century "genre mish-mash".
@awickedtribe4 жыл бұрын
@@EastmanD Eastman D I beg to differ, they are very Prog and you are wrong that they were never considered to be a Progressive Rock band. This isn't 'genre mish-mash' unless you don't understand what Progressive Music is in which case I can understand the error. They incorporated Classical, Jazz, Gospel and Opera to a Rock sensibility which is exactly the variations that make them Prog. You don't think 'Bohemian Rhapsody' isn't Prog? Just Like Eric Burdon's War on 'Declares War' and War's 'World is a Ghetto'. Eric Burdon created the band as a vehicle to combine rock, funk, classical, jazz and country into a musical form...which I exactly what Progressive music is. I could even cite Marshall Tucker Band to be Prog, combining Country, Western (yes there is a difference) Rock, and Jazz. But then I have only been listening to Prog since the late 60's so maybe I am mistaken.
@EastmanD4 жыл бұрын
@@awickedtribe Yes you're mistaken. You confusing the terms. My use of mish-mash was spot on, considering your mish-mash of an answer. If you want to believe that most of the music you listen to, is progressive (note the small "P") that's fine. Many bands can be considered "progressive" by blending different styles of music. But the use of the term "a Prog Rock band" was not used for bands like Queen, Led Zeppelin, the Who and on and on. War ? Marshall Tucker ?? Man, please.... go to your browser and type... Is Queen Prog a prog rock band ? Queen definitely had many characteristics of progressive rock and certainly sounded the part in some of their songs. However, their themes were pop-oriented with influences of gospel, blues, and symphonic rock also forming a part of their style. ... Ultimately they were a hard rock and pop band. That by the way is from Quora.com...take it up with them...

Man, they were a helluva band. Great job Pete. As usual ! I do like some of the songs they did in the 80's. Innuendo was special. I agree 100% that it was a great album for Freddie to go out on. Inspiring and essential in my book.

I saw Thin Lizzy open for Queen at Winterland. We got there early and watched 4 limos pull up. Heard a taste of sound check. Gary Moore was filling in for Brian Robertson. Before T.H. comes on, a spot lights up stage right behind a pair of Marshall stacks. This blistering eruption of blues runs fills the arena. 30 seconds later T.H. take the stage. That was my introduction to Gary Moore. Live at Winterland. Queen; Brian May, what can you say? This was the Night at the Opera tour. Freddy made due with a voice that had reached exhaustion. Great show.

Hi Pete, I'm addicted to your show. I just discovered it about 2 weeks ago and it's all I watch. A music junkie myself I'm glad I found it. I've watched dozens of your videos and I agree with so many of your top ten lists it's uncanny. However, I feel you're missing a lot of bands that deserve some mention. I would love if you did a show on Stratovarius, Masterplan, At Vance, Heavenly, Angra, Derdian, Sonata Arctica, Excalion, Blind Guardian, Twilightning and Royal Hunt. These bands sound like Iron Maiden, Yngwie Malmsteen, Queen, Uriah Heep and Black Sabbath all rolled into one. If you haven't listened to them check them out and in the meantime I'll still be watching your channel and enjoying every minute. Peace! RJ

My top five 1.Sheer Heart Attack 2. A Night At The Opera 3.Queen 2 4. Jazz 5.Queen I think i've mentioned before i do covers albums with other friends.I think my fav cover ever, and easily the longest and hardest to put together was our version of Queen's The Prophet Song. It took the best part of three days to do, our main singer and i did all the music. Most are just a matter of hours, and we've covered stacks of seventies tunes. My computer was over heating, i think we had over twenty five layers of vocals. I nearly gave up on the idea as i couldn't work the guitar part out until i suddenly found it was in drop D. Great fun, glad we made the attempt.

A pretty spot on ranking to mine as well. Queen is one of those rare bands where any one of 10 albums can be ranked as #1 depending on one's own personal music tastes. Their sound and style changed greatly over a 15-year period, yet somehow all of it remains rather unique and has never been successfully re-attempted by other bands.

My first concert was Queen on the "News Of The World" tour in Dec '77 in Dallas. A friend of the family had some connections and got me and my girlfriend 6th row tickets (which we didn't fully understand how great that was until we got there!). I can't tell you what a thrill it was for a 14 year old kid to see Queen up that close in their prime - I was mesmerized for most of the show. I had taken up guitar a couple of years before and Brian May became such an inspiration to me - he is SO brilliant! The highlight of the show was an acoustic version of "Love Of My Life" that Brian did on a 12-string Ovation with Freddie wearing his 70s trademark black/white squares leotard. I got to see Queen again in '82 and they were just as great - what a band! I thought your ranking was spot on!
