Just yesterday I rediscovered Magnum after many, many years. I was flying a 6 hour flight back from Bali, Indonesia to Melbourne Australia, and I ripped through about 5-6 of their earlier albums. What a band!! Amazing discography, and a great video, guys.

A bitter sweet watch, after the sad news yesterday of the great Tony Clarkin's passing yesterday. Been listening to a lot of Magnum and came across this. Possibly my favorite ranking videos you have done on SoT, Pete as always is fantastic, but I loved Steven Reid's contribution, great to see a fellow Brit (I'm Welsh though not Scottish) . The enthusiasm, knowledge and love for a great, and ridiculously underrated band. Looking forward to the new album, but it will be with a heavy heart, as with Tony gone, that will undoubtedly be the end of Magnum.

Love the show Pete and the longer format. Great to see how we fans connect to bands! My top 3: 1. On a Storyteller’s Night (absolute classic and killer production) 2. Vigilante (has grown on me over time) 3. Wings of Heaven (sadly the song C’est La Vie doesn’t appear on the latest CD reissues but an outstanding song) Admire all the Rodney Matthew album covers - they are stores are within stories. But oddly enough my favourite cover is Goodnight L.A. done by the mighty Hugh Syme of Rush fame and I think it’s a subtle play on words. Although recorded at Keith Olsen’s Goodnight L.A studio, it’s the band turning their backs on America and figuratively giving the finger to their record company at the time Polydor Records.

Great episode! Pete is right about MAGNUM being having such a low profile in the U.S. The first time I ever heard of them is when White Wolf covered "Just Like An Arrow" on their 1986 album "Endangered Species". I finally got to hear the band in the late 90's. Now thanks to KZbin and other platforms I've been able to explore their catalog of music. Criminally underrated band!

Great stuff guys. Steven, I am from Edinburgh and you like a wee story, so here goes. In 86, was playing football during summer holidays, 16 years old, and a buddy turned up wearing a Storytellers tour t shirt. The night before he'd been at the Playhouse to see them. This T shirt was brand new. I was taken in by the artwork. And now a big fan. Saw them Vigilante tour but that is all, but do listen a lot.

A terribly underrated band that i got into solely on a blind buy of On a Storytellers Night (still have my original vinyl) in the 1985. A hard band to pigeonhole genre-wise, melodic hard rock is probably the best way to descibe them, just exceptionally solid tunes that are consistently great. I dont own Magnum II nor either of the last 2 releases. Like Steven's list, there are 5/6 top teir albums, a bunch of very solid to great albums in the middle, and 2/3 that I'm pretty indifferent about. Should also mention there is a 5 disc compilation book/box set called The Gathering that has a bunch of B sides and unreleased material that is well worth owning but its OOP and sorta pricey these days... great having steven in on this one Pete !! 1 On a Storyteller's Night 2 Chase the Dragon 3 Kingdom of Madness 4 The 11th Hour 5 Princess Alice... 6 Wings of Heaven 7 Vigilante 8 On the 13th Day 9 Sleepwalking 10 Brand New Morning 11 Escape from the Shadow Garden 12. Into the Valley... 13 The Visitation 14 Goodnight LA 15 Evolution 16 Sacred Blood Divine Lies 17 Rock Art 18 Breath of Life ** Keeping the Night Light Burning Need to grab the 3 i dont have yet to complete the collection ... Great band that YOU SHOYLD KNOW !

Kingdom of Madness, that's my favourite. I owned a couple of singles off the album too. I go to see them live in the mid 80's in a very small theatre in the UK. Their career coughed and spluttered as they struggled a bit to get some traction in the 80's but they were persistent

Hi, Mr. Reid. I've been reading your work on the Sea of Tranquility site since the beginning. Great job. It's a pleasure to see you for the first time. I would like for both of you to know that of all the artists we have reviewed thus far, there are two bands who consistently make my top ten albums per year. Many times my favorite bands will drop on an off. There are two bands that consistently remain on that list regardless of the year--Kansas and Magnum. Gents, you are right. I cannot rank these, but the ones during their "middle period" aren't good where they are in their catalog, but when you compare them against everything else that year, they are as good as anything else in the prog community. Magnum is the most consistent band in history--even when they were inconsistent amongst themselves. IMHO.

Sleepwalking I lost them after this a bit. Friends told me they are back on track. 'Reborn' and 'Changes' are my favourite songs. 'Midnight' has one of the most beautiful videos (Love the saxophone in it) 'Le Morts Dansant' should be the perfect soundtrack for 'Paths of Glory'

I've said this on the 1982 favourite album show, Chase the Dragon is my winner. Every track is stunning - The Spirit, Soldier of the Line, Sacred Hour!! This is my favorite band of all time and as you guys say "there is no bad album in their catalogue". There is a clear top five: On a story tellers night Chase the dragon Vigilante Wings of Heaven Kingdom of madness After theese I can put all the rest in any order they are equaly good. Bob's solo albums are almost just as good, not a bad album there either and I also like the Hard Rain albums a lot.

I've been following Sea of Tranquillity for a while now, and enjoyed every post. This post about Magnum tops the list. A remarkable band. I saw them in the early 80's, and I saw them at Wembley, they played everywhere. They seemed to be the support band for everyone. The bands catalogue is astonishing. Some really interesting points made. The fact they didn't tour the US? Only an opinion, but better than Styx. I enjoy them as much as Kansas. The fact that anybody can rate anything by the band more highly than Chase the Dragon, just goes to show how good this band is. Thanks guys..a brilliant post

The best Magnum albums 1, Magnum II, 2. KINGDOM OF MADNESS, 3, CHASE THE DRAGON, 4 STORYTELLERS NIGHT, 5. ELEVENTH HOUR. Their last good albums were Vigilante and Wings of heaven. Since they split and reformed, the only album i play is Princess Alice. The last few have been ok but nothing special. This is from a huge Magnum fan. They were the first band i ever saw and i used to go to other parts of the UK to see them. They are by far, the band I've seen most times. Their first few albums were amazing and the songwriting was brilliant. Yes, they were definitely an album band. RIP Tony.

1 Lost on the Road to Eternity 2 On a Storytellers Night 3 The Serpent Rings 4 Kingdom of Madness 5 Vigilante 6 Wings Of Heaven. Been waiting for this and it was well worth the wait, seen Magnum play live a couple of Times, they are awesome! so a Magnum tribute band a Butlins Rock Festival, a few years ago too, though don’t remember they’re name, they were good too.

Kingdom of Madness played Butlins but they're no cover band, its the band of former Magnum keyboard players Mark Stanway and Richard Bailey with drummer Micky Barker. Anyone who is into classic Magnum will love them as they concentrate on their period with Magnum from Kingdom of Madness to Rock Art.

Love this video, shame it’s taken me such a long time to listen to it, but I have all the albums plus the live ones, and I agree not a bad one In there. Love the band. Eleventh Hour is their best album by far for me. The Great Disaster, Vicious Companions and So Far Away are three of the greatest songs ever recorded anywhere! I love the variety on this album. It's got everything from balls out galloping metal, prog rock, folk and jazz in One Night of Passion. I had to check it was still the band playing when I heard that coz it's so different to anything they've done! Outside albums are Sleepwalking, Vigilant and Wings of Heaven. But anything really. Bob Catley's voice is so strong and distinctive. He could sing the phone to you and make it sound like Shakespeare. Tony Clarkin is one of the greatest songwriters and guitarist extraordinaire and of course Mark Stanway one of the greats on keyboards. RIP Tony.

They are so versatile, so consistent and if you love them, you *really* love them! I was supposed to have seen them live again at the end of March, but that tour got postponed for obvious reasons. I can’t face having one album at the bottom, so I’ve picked a Top 12: •On a Storyteller’s Night •Vigilante •Wings of Heaven •Kingdom of Madness •Chase the Dragon •Princess Alice and the Broken Arrow •Lost on the Road to Eternity •Serpent Rings •On the Thirteenth Day •Escape From the Shadow Garden •Goodnight L.A. •Magnum II

3:46 - Magnum was actually touring the US in support of their Chase The Dragon album in 1982,they were signed to Ozzy's label (Jet Records) and they were opening for Ozzy. However they were thrown out of the tour after a few shows and they had to go back to the UK. At the time the official explanation was that Ozzy's audience didn't like Magnum( imho thats bullshit, its not unusual for opening acts to receive a less than welcoming response, thats not really a reason to dump an opening act. The actual reason might be smthg different. Maybe they wanted an opening act who can sell tickets rather than an unknown British band)

The most underrated band in the world. I used to joke with my friend in Sweden that Magnum was world famous in the UK. He’d never heard of them until I introduced him to them. He owes me big time. 😂

You guys are insane, buying the entire catalog of this band! Many one hit wonder of today's band won't even get 5% close to the quality of music of this band!!! 20 albums and I never hear of them???? Shame on me and my muscial research....love your channel...you killed it with the Marillion review!

Came to this band at the very start with Kingdom of Madness and totally agree that the albums you have an affinity for are the first ones. That said ‘On a Storytellers Night’ is a masterpiece and is also my number one. It’s interesting how much these lists vary and shows how good Magnum’s material is. Great show guys.

Chase The Dragon for me. The songs, production and artwork plus my first Magnum discovery back in 83. Great great live band. Storyteller's looked to be their final breakthrough but it never happened.

Been a Magnum fan since 1986. Enjoyed this video - thanks! Almost completed a run through of all their albums then I will try ranking them. But I think I’ll have the same problem. I pretty much my bottom 2 and top 3 set in stone, after that it’s impossible!
