I've only heard their first 6 but those are all amazing. Super hard to rank! 1. A Tab in the Ocean 2. Remember the Future 3. Journey to the Center of the Eye 4. ...Sounds Like This 5. Recycled 6. Down to Earth I think it's really cool that each of these albums sound very different from each other but are still recognizably Nektar

Very enjoyable listen. Recycled would be my #1 favorite. I’ve always thought it was a precursor to industrial and industrial metal. Like you said, very different for the band. I remember buying it as a kid, so it had huge nostalgia value to me as well. I tend to like the US mix best but again nostalgia plays a big part in that. Most fans tend to like the Europe mix/pressing best.

Nektar were my first concert back in 1973 at the indoor sports venue in Differdange ( Luxemburg ). I was 13 at the time and seeing Roye all dressed in white with a white Les Paul playing this wonderful music and the amazing liquid light show was life changing. Got a cool poster at the merch stand after the gig that decorated my teen room for years. Started on the guitar very shortly after that revealing experience and never stopped since. Peace And Love

A friend and I had tickets to see them at the Fox Theater in Atlanta in probably 1976 or 1977. The seats were right down in front of the stage a few rows back. Couldn't believe how lucky we were to get such great seats... A few weeks later they announced on the radio that the Nektar concert had been canceled due to lack of tickets sales. lol

Recycled is one of the best prog rock albums of all time. It is the last one they did with the original lineup. But it also includes Larry Fast on synthesizers and he really makes his mark on this record . It came out in 1975 and it is a more aggressive and electronic sounding album than their previous ones were. The earlier ones were more laid back and dreamy while Recycled was moving more towards a harder edge. Kind of like Yes did with Relayer the year before. Their best album by far IMO.

Circa 1974 they were scheduled to perform a concert in Jacksonville, FL but it was cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. Living in the SE it was difficult, to say the least, to have any opportunity to see any of my favorite bands (all prog at that time) live in concert. As a pacifier to those of us that bought tickets, our local planetarium featured the music of Nektar for one of their "Cosmic Concerts", which my friends and I frequented [more often than not, in a state of perceptual augmentation]. The show was fantastic; but what made it very special was, during a passage from within "Remember The Future", much to our surprise, the band members entered the room amid pulsating strobe lights, and made a single pass around the circular seating area. I'm fairly certain there remains a stain on my seat cushion to this day. Sadly, when the show ended, the band had not remained in the hallway to meet and sign autographs. So I never got the chance to see them perform live, but for this (then) 17 year old, I had an exciting and memorable experience.

A friend and I had tickets to see Nektar at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. Probably 1976 or 77. Great seats down in front. A few weeks before the show they said on the radio it had been cancelled. Later we learned it was due to lack of ticket sales. Our planetarium didn't give us a Nektar show. They did a Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds show. It was pretty bad. They edited out all the parts that had loud electric guitars. We got a refund for the Nektar concert. I'd have rather seen Nektar than go to the planetarium.

@@frankmarsh1159 That was the main reason I hated living in the SE. Most, if not all the bands I love the most would never tour near enough, and back then none of us had the cash to travel and get meals and a hotel just to attend a concert. When asking our parents, they thought I'd lost my mind. Now years have passed and I can almost go anywhere I want to see a show, but sadly most of the bands I would want to see are no longer together.

Nice show, Pete ! Nektar is an absolutely brilliant band, yet sadly under the radar of many (prog fans surely know them well). Right until the end, with Roye Albrighton, their live performances were absolutely stunning ! I’ve been a huge fan since the 80’s and I regret not having seen them live ... Your ranking is very much on the same page as mine would have been, with the exception that my number one has always been ...Sounds Like This : that live-in-The-studio feel and those songs (especially Good Day and Wings) are unsurpassable! Tab In The Ocean comes at number 2 and Remember The Future follows for me. One should also mention the truly magnificent EP Unidentified Flying Abstract, also recorded live in the studio at Chipping Norton, with some tracks first released on the first edition of Sunday Night At The London Roundhouse and later the whole session released separately. Once again, thanks for this show and keep up the good work !

Yes, Nektar was big in St. Louis in 1973-74, especially. After Recycled, the band lost a lot of its momentum, and Roye's leaving the band really hurt. Nektar was never quite the same, although the band in the 2000s did have several flashes of the old brilliance. Obviously, the talent was still there with perhaps the luck, marketing and wherewithal missing. To me, Albrighton was the driving force and his absence is just too great to overcome.

I'm glad to see this band get the recognition they deserve, here. I was a big fan in High School, and my fandom continued back in the UK, where I was lucky enough to see their reunion gig at the Astoria Theatre, complete with Larry Fast. That was a very special night. Albrighton was a criminally underrated guitarist, able to make his guitar absolutely sing like an angel and roar like a demon, while Moore, with his fluid, resonant bass lines, was one of the best bassists around, right up there with Chris Squire, IMO. It was a rare band that, apart from Albrighton, didn't give itself over to solos - even Ron Howden, the drummer, only got one brief solo on the "Sounds Like This" album, and Taff Freeman's keyboards mostly supplied funky texture (his playing on "Nellie the Elephant" is a delight) without the virtuoso flashiness that most prog bands brought. This might have something to do with the fact that their songs came from prolonged jams (this, if I remember correctly, they mention in the liner notes to Sounds Like This, which was created from four days of jamming together). Personally, I thought that "The Prodigal Son" was a far better return than it had any right to be, and would put Remember the Future at the top, closely followed by Down to Earth and Recycled. I liked A Tab in the Ocean (and had to do with the Larry Fast-produced US version for about 20 years, until the excellent CD re-release) but it does feel embryonic and very, very much of its time - a bit flakey, a bit spacey with a tinge of hard rock. It's all good, but I feel they got better as they matured. I even managed to see the David Nelson version play Chicago in 1977 (a triple bill with Lake and City Boy!) and he was good but...he was no Albrighton.

"A Tab in the Ocean" was my favorite Nektar album until I discovered "Remember the Future." The latter's nostalgic guitar riffs strike a unique chord with me (sorry). There's something about the way certain songs evoke a sense of nostalgia that is hard to articulate, but "Remember the Future" exemplifies this phenomenon perfectly.

Nektar the British band that most people think are German but are liked by almost everyone. One of my favorites! Pete wearing a very nice shirt without a band name for a pleasant change of scenery.

It's sad that not a lot of people are commenting on this. "Remember the Future" was big with my crowd in High School '74. I followed them until Roye left, although I did like "Magic is a Child". I have bought a couple of their albums after the reunion in the early oughts, but they didn't seem to have that Nektar mystique anymore, maybe I'll look into a couple of albums you have mentioned here. Thanks Pete for doing this. R.I.P. Roye Albrighton.

@@urbangustafsson8067 Yeah, "Magic is a Child" is good, but with Roye gone, it's got kind of a different vibe to it, doesn't have his signature guitar sound...that upbeat strumming that let's you know that "Roye is in the house!"

Agree with the rankings. "A Tab In the Ocean" is my favorite. I too thought they were a German band for many years. Watch out for early CD pressings of "Remember the Future". A different mix with guitar work missing. Proper mix released many years later.

Hi Dave Tab is just epic, especially Desolation Valley my fave track of all. I have the early Bellaphon CD of Remember with the missing parts. I was into them early on so bought Down to earth when it came out then saw the tour. I had purchased Journey and Sounds second hand..

Hello Dave and Keith! If you or any other Nektar fans are interested, the " definitive " versions of the early Nektar material, on CD at least, can be found on Eclectic Discs/Dream Nebula Recordings. I actually researched this and found out that the band were finally able to access their own first generation master tapes and do proper releases. All other versions including the Bellaphon

versions used poor quality copies of the master tapes and added extra reverb to some of the albums which the band had nothing to do with. I hope this helps and, stay safe and enjoy!

Great band and often overlooked, even if it comes to 70's Prog! My favorites are "Recycled", "A Tab In The Ocean", "Remember The Future" and "Journey To The Center Of The Eye". I think "Sounds Like This" could have been great, if it was shorter. There are some fillers on it in my opinion. I'd put it behind "Magic Is A Child" and "Down To Earth".

Hey Pete! This is a great rundown of Nektar's albums. Love your videos in general! I've been meaning to ask you if you're familiar with these other prog bands. I've been digging into their music lately: Lethe (1981, Dutch) Cathedral "Stained Glass Stories (1978, New York) Far East Family Band (Japan). Check these guys out if you're not already familiar! Cheers. -John

I always enjoy your reviews Pete but it seems to me you could have mentioned a little more about Moes' contributions to the band. His basslines were musical and powerful and a huge part of the bands sound, especially on the releases Remember The Future, Tab In The Ocean & Down To Earth. Just an observation, great work as usual!

First ever concert I went to; Nektar, Man and Zoppo Trump in the Westfalenhalle, Dortmund. Must have been 1972. We somehow managed to get backstage and Roy Albrighton gave me his plectrum, but wouldn't let me play on his Les Paul. A year or so later they played there again and this time he let me play his white semi-accoustic... great guy and my hero at that time.

Also, I should have said that 'recycling' was not a big thing in 1975 ... in fact the drive to systematic recycling of waste in the UK didn't take off until the 1990s at the earliest - probably a twenty-first century phenomenon. This makes their album prescient and the band deserves credit for that, I think.

Like a lot of people, the #1 album for me is Remember the Future. #2 is Tab in the Ocean. If you are new to Nektar and you want to buy your first album of theirs and don't know which to buy, first know what you like. Do you like the guitar driven rock of the 80's? If you do then go with Tab, if your taste has more of the pop sensibilities then go with Remember the Future. Both are amazing albums, it's just that Remember has more pop written into it while Tab has more in your face rock woven into it. Either way, you will like Nektar.

Sorry pete i totally disagree with summation of "man in the moon" after your comments on the album i was totally shocked how good it really was, it probably suffers because of the pure prog classics of back catalogue. Take them out of equation then this is an excellent album. Just my opinion, like yours pete, as ypu often say, 'no right or wrong' keep up the good work! 😀

Found the first 2 used pretty quickly but 'Sounds Like This' took years to run down. Got the new issues as they came out. Probably my favorite prog group from the 70's.
