Oh wow. I'm so glad you did this. I LOVE Threshold! You are absolutely right, a lot of them are interchangeable because they are all THAT good. I would probably switch 1 and 2 every second I think about it. My top five would basically all be containders for top dog... I enjoyed what you guys had to say. I certainly hope your video turns some people to that wonderful music catalog. Mine: 11 - Wounded Land 10 - Clone 9 - Extinct Instinct 8 - Critical Mass 7 - March of Progress 6 - For the Journey 5 - Subsurface 4 - Psychadelicatessen 3 - Hypotetical 2 - Dead Reckoning 1 - Legends of the Shire

The posts from Sea of Tranquility have really brought some smiles to me during this pandemic and before. First it was Savatage, then Magnum, and now Threshold. I just finished listening to Critical Mass and Legend of the Shires on you tube. Outstanding band. Will be blowing some cash on Itunes tomorrow buying as many of their catalog as I can.

Great to hear some Threshold chat on here, and I've often wondered if you were a fan. I've travelled up to London three times over the years to see them live and they're always worth the effort. I agree that they have never done a bad album, and they seem to get better and better really. It is interesting that you highlight the Groom/West writing partnership, as they are certainly the dominant force, but others have written over the years too. In fact one of my favourite tracks Siren Sky was written by Pete Morten who sadly is no longer in the band, and Glynn Morgan wrote a couple for Psychedelicatessen too so it will be interesting to see if he contributes to their next one (I believe Legends of the Shires was already partially recorded with Damian Wilson before he left). Ironically too, March of Progress is my favourite album of theirs and it probably has the most diverse collection of songwriting credits in their catalogue. My ranking would be: 1) March of Progress 2) For the Journey 3) Legends of the Shires 4) Dead Reckoning 5) Subsurface 6) Clone 7) Hypothetical 8) Critical Mass 9) Psychedelicatessen 10) Extinct Instinct 11) Wounded Land
@ericwalker60684 жыл бұрын
I’ve only been into them in the past 5 or 6 years. I’ve managed to pick up all of their albums and still digesting them, but I will say Legends Of The Shires was my favorite album of 2017.

Great review gents. So stoked you did Threshold. A very special band with their own unique sound. BTW - I saw them in Atlanta ProgPower USA in 2019. They sounded epic playing a ton of their tunes and great ones from The Shire. Phenomenal !
@musicnerd89694 жыл бұрын
Though the top five are all almost interchangeable, my favorites at the moment, from most to least, are: 1. Legends of the Shire 2. Hypothetical 3. Subsurface 4. Dead Reckoning 5. Critical Mass 6. March of Progress 7. For the Journey 8. Extinct Instinct 9. Psychodelicatessen 10. Clone 11. Wounded Land Oddly enough, I thought Damian Wilson was a better fit for Landmarq's earlier music than here in Threshold. The band was never bad with his voice, but the mixture always sounded shrill. It's probably the tinnitus. The combination of his vocal range, his frequency and the guitars wreck havoc with my brain as it tries to break apart the various sounds from that latent white noise that's always constant in the background. Having said this I seemed to have fewer problems with the more recent material than the first two with him.

As we say in Scotland, there must be something in the water. Before I watched this I rated the Threshold albums as I see them and, as a fellow Scotman, I was amazed to find that I had 5 of the 11 albums in exactly the same place as Steven and really close on all the others.....I do beat him though as I have seen them live twice. My order: 1. Subsurface 2. Critical Mass (my first Threshold album) 3. Hypothetical 4. For the Journey 5. Dead Reckoning 6. Legends of the Shires (due to extenuating circumstances I haven't really got round to giving this album the time it deserves , so may be higher) 7. Clone 8. March of Progress 9. Psychedelicatessen 10. Extinct Instinct 12. Wounded Land I would also highly recommend the "Critcal Energy" live DVD....absolutely marvellous; Mac at his best. R.I.P.

Hey Gaza, it was Fused Festival in 2011, which was organised and by the same people and (I believe) in the same venue as Summer's End, so you're pretty much spot on. I totally agree that picking a favorite is almost impossible. And in the end it comes down to the circumstances in which I bought the albums. So my favorites are Hypothetical because that's the first one I ever heard, Dead Reckoning because that's the first one I got as a new release and March Of Progress because that's the first time I saw 'em live. The rest is equally good, but these are just a bit more special!

One of my top 10 favourite bands, love all their albums, with reference to the mention of progpower, it was 2002 and can e found on the critical energy DVD, a good introduction to the band is the Ravages of Time best of cd, plus if you can get it the wireless acoustic set. Another band of like to see a ranking of us Arena, very consistent catalogue and funnily enough also had several singers but hasn't hindered the quality of the song writing.

Threshold has always been a consistently good band with 2 amazing vocalists and is both melodic and has that bottom end heaviness. Critical Mass up to Dead Reckoning is their peak in proginess. The earlier albums are good to great and the last three albums have been good with a couple of epic tracks on them. I agree that Clone album is the closest Threshold went towards a mainstream sound and catchier tunes but is still a good album regardless. Threshold Opeth Overkill are bands that have put consistently good to great albums throughout their careers with not one stinker in the pile. Englands true hidden gem of a band that everyone can enjoy.

All different but none better than the others: - Subsurface: great tracks, very consistent mood across all of the album. - Hypothetical: catchy, great melodies, best Threshold epic, greatest cover I know - March of progress: great songs, not as accessible as other lps Features the amazing Damian Wilson, the best in the business - Legends of the shires: As a fan of Damian Wilson and Threshold, I wanted to NOT like this album after Damian left. I couldn't because it's way too good. Great songs, great concept, its epic Lost In Translation is as good as Narcissus. Glynn delivers. Didn't expect this after I didn't like Glynn on Psychedelicatessen.

I'm aghast lol off topic from the video (which is great, BTW) ... but I've been an IM fan since before Bruce Dickinson joined the band ... the first 5 albums with Bruce are imprinted on my DNA.... but I still can admit that all of those albums are not filler-free.... and the final 2 albums prior to his tmporary departure are basically all filler other than the FotD title track .... But following his return... their albums have been phenomenal .... not a single filler track on any of them ... all strong listens from start to finish. I didn't think they could surpass DoD and AMoLaD ...ever ..... but here we are... Senjutsu is the only album from 2021 aside from Mastodon's Hushed & Grim that I can apply the word "masterpiece" to. Back on Threshold ... great band ... respect all your opinions and comments for each album. Of all the SoT Ranking the X Studio albums videos .... the ones cohosted with Steven Reid are FAR and away the best videos. HINT .... partner with Steven as often as you can :) .....
