14:44 fun fact: Lemurs in the Attica Zoo Park are not in captivity exactly. They have in the zoo a wooden fence that is easy to enter and you can get in and interact with them! (as long as you don't feed them cause they can sometimes get violent with each other) I remember when I was a little that a lemur was in my arm and it was awesome!!!

As an Australian, im so glad that you didnt fall for the koala propaganda. Everyones like "aww they're so cute". No, they are gross. The babys will eat their mums diarrhoea, they make these unsettling growling noises, they spend most of they day sleeping because eucalyptus leaves dont provide much energy and they are just gross animals. Now, wombats are cute. Not friendly, they do growl and will try to fuck you up if you ever find one. But they're cute as hell and interesting. Their poop is cube shaped, they use their butts to protect from and sometimes even kill predators, and the way they walk around on those stubby little legs, with their cute little faces, makes my heart happy. But no one ever knows about wombats, the clearly superior animal, because of koala propaganda.

The zoo I volunteer at has two lions (it's a small zoo), a very old male, and a very young female (the male's partner died from old age and lions get sad when they're alone so they got a new one). The lioness is so active and loves to run around and play with her ball, and the male is so tired and done with her. I've seen the lioness sneak up on the male and bite him to get him to chase her so many times. She's just harassing this old man and it's hilarious. So I'd say our lions are pretty entertaining.

Yeah but you work there so you get to see this due to time spent there. Tugg is speaking from visitor perspective where you’re most likely at an exhibit for no more than 10min. @kinoprojektproduktionen2553 I work on the opposite side of the zoo from the lions, so I rarely ever see them actually. I usually just see them when I go to the zoo for fun instead of work. Fun fact: there is 1 area in south west Sydney where Koalas are chlamydia free! The reason for this is believed to be due to a highway, infected Koalas are run over before they reach the non-infected side and therefore prevented from spreading disease.

@MissyRoseLord15 күн бұрын
@@chango.-. Sorry could you elaborate? I might be able to explain it further, so basically the disease was spreading through the whole koala population via sexual reproduction, shared bodily fluids such as a female feeding her bub and airborne particles. There is this colony in South and south west Sydney that didn't get it and we kind of boxed them in with roads, suburbs, cities and highways before they could get infected, creating a barrier that killed any Koalas that may spread the disease. So now there's an area of national park that is secured and protected. These Koalas are super important to the scientific community so the local councils do almost everything they can to prevent the spread of disease between them. Hope that cleared it up!

I like to believe they started to recognize me after a while and that we were friends. It's been over two years since I've gotten to visit them, and I miss them. The baby has probably grown up a bit by now, and I doubt they'd still remember me, but sometimes I think about going to the zoo again just to see them.

My brother sits down on the bench and leans against the glass, and immediately, a cougar that had been dozing sits up, and starts prowling towards him. We give my brother some warnings, telling him he's "being stalked" but he's too exhausted to care. Suddenly, the cougar bursts into a sprint and leaps against the glass, mouth open and pressed against the glass riggt behind my brother. He jumps 6 feet into the air and screams. Best zoo visit.

Watching their social dynamics and interactive behaviors is very cool. They also "dance" to draw up food into the water column which is very fun to see. +vocalizations 10/10. They have a level of intelligence where they have some level of observable smartness but not so smart that it's difficult to keep them content in captivity. Peacock tails ARE (kind of) impractical in nature! There's some debate but the general consensus is that their tails (called "trains". Talk about dumptruck) and their impressive size + iridescent colors are useful to attract females (sexual selection) and show "fitness"- since their tails are likely to complicate an individual's survival (too shiny, it makes them more visible to predators, and their length hinders escape from danger), it technically shows that only the fittest males could survive the handicap of a large butt. That's why the trait has prevailed. Also I think it's really funny that we call males peacocks, females peahens and babies peachicks. Hell yeah ornithology naming conventions

The NC zoo is unusual, because it's specifically dedicated to replicating the natural habitat as closely as possible. It is, according to wikipedia, "the world's largest natural habitat zoo," and "one of two state-supported zoos in the US, the other being the Minnesota Zoo." The elephant enclosure is 47 acres. The giraffe habitat (not a common zoo animal, at all) is something like two square miles. The giraffe/ostritch enclosure is 4.7 acres, and you're allowed to feed them sometimes (it's up to them if they want to be fed by hand, and they do have food available inside). It's also one of the only Association of Zoos and Aquariums zoos in the US to have a breeding pair of polar bears (and the enclosure is quite large and cooled, they're doing very well). The coolest animals to see there, though, are the puffins! They're some of the only flighted birds that can swim with extreme proficiency, and then come out of the water and fly almost immediately afterward. They dive off of rocks and into the water and it is SO COOL. The whole thing is 500 acres, and the animals are very well taken care of, unlike so many of the private zoos. It's very cool.

Because no one has asked I'd love to know how they don't have stomachs! They eat n stuff, but where does it go? Also, don't they glow?

Fun fact: the only zoo in North America that has a platypus is the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. It is in a nocturnal habitat. They’re in big tanks with some logs and land to climb up on. They mainly stay in the water tho!

6:14 in the city of Arcadia in California, the peacocks roam the streets like no one’s business. Also, they only show their cool tails during mating season during Spring and Summer.
@Zachsquatch53117 күн бұрын
They’re so freaking loud though. Where I lived north of Tampa, FL had them roaming free around my neighborhood and the noise they make is terrible.
@danielschmaderer17 күн бұрын
@ this is true. They get extremely loud during mating season. Fall and winter is when they quiet down a lot.

I live in that area! They are so dope but they do be sitting in the middle of the road a little too often. They live at the Arboretum, no?

The "water buffalo" is actually a black wildebeest. However, both are very cool animals! and the "caribou" is a moose

Had one of the lions roar while I was at the zoo as a kid. Even though I was halfway across the zoo when it happened, I could feel the roar in my chest. Those cats are super loud.

I went to a zoo in southern Georgia and they had peacocks loose, roaming the whole zoo area. They would CONSTANTLY attack cars when they saw their reflection. Kind of scary, very mean. They are pretty from a distance.

There's actually a peacock that lives in my neighborhood. It was someone's patch that escaped at some point and now it's just been living in my neighborhood for a couple years.

One of the coolest experiences I had in the past few years was with a lion at the zoo. For some reason, he’d decided to chill right up against the glass. I could’ve touched him if the glass hadn’t been there (not that I would have because I like having fingers). I could see each individual hair on his mane- I could even see his eyelashes. And then he just turned and looked at me and I just felt like I was meeting Mufasa or something and it was just sick af. They truly have such a majesty to them that’s awe-inspiring if you’re lucky like I was.

I was at the zoo when I was five. I'm from South Africa BTW. I was looking at the gorilla enclosure and it came up to the window, pressed its ass on the window and peed right infront of me😂😂😂

Im a seasonal worker at the zoo in my area. We have this one ostrich that would come right up to the fence all the time and just...stare at people. I don't work directly with any "dangerous" animals, but that ostrich was the only one that could strike a primal fear in me, even behind a fence. (And yes, she will nip given the opportunity) Edit: just found the video I took of her one time, and I completely forgot that she went up to the fence IN THE RAIN. None of the other animals were willing to get soaked like that. Yeah, Idk about other ostriches, but she was definitely a character.

There was, in fact, a polar bear at the SF zoo. The poor thing had some form of OCD, all he could do was swim back and forth in his tank, hop out, tap his paw, hop back in , lather rinse repeat. It was really sad. He passed away a few years back. RIP

There's platypuses at the Safari Park in SD. They're kept in a room thats pretty dimly lit and the enclosure itself is made to resemble a stream and has pretty fast moving water.

6:28 I grew up in Atlanta. Only times I've seen peacocks irl were when I visited the Yellow River Game Ranch. Many of the animals would walk around freely, and they had several peacocks. They were beautiful, and the ranch was where I learned peacocks can fly (albeit a very limited range of flight). The place was located off of HWY-78 in Snellville, just outside of the metropolitan area. It's unfortunately closed now, but I LOVED going there as a kid. I veered off on a bit of a tangent, but my overall point is that I agree with your ranking of peacocks and your recognition of their awesomeness.
