Ranks are WORTHLESS! - TEKKEN 8

I wrote an essay about this topic on X not long ago. I also gave some solutions to the problem. We are on exactly the same page when it comes to prowess matchmaking, but I want to copy-paste that post here, in case you find some new ideas and views on this problem: "I want to discuss a significant problem in the T8 ranked matchmaking system. Every rank division has secret subdivisions where the prowess is the main priority for matchmaking, regardless of the rank division we are fighting in. This ranking system renders ranks completely irrelevant, and different rules apply to players in the same rank divisions but with different prowess. A few days ago, while ranking up a new side character (Jack), I was only fighting opponents with 230k-350k prowess (in Battle Ruler and Fujin), and after a tedious session, I achieved Raijin. Battle Ruler felt like fighting in Gold ranks. This system traps high-prowess players in lower ranks when they start playing a new character. The same issue arises when dropping from Gold back to Blue ranks or other lower divisions. Even when your current highest rank drops, your prowess does not. So, once you drop back to Blue ranks, you are fighting in a completely different Blue division, facing only top-tier Blue players with 240k prowess and above. Once in a blue moon (no pun intended), you are matched with 170k-190k prowess players. A player that drops down from Tekken King to Fujin is matched with stronger opponent's in Fujin than when he was in Bushin for the first time. This matchmaking system also affects players who have ranked up multiple characters, but never achieved a Gold rank. These players have high prowess and are matched with other high-prowess players who could be in Gold ranks with their mains. Having multiple characters in Fujin (for example) doesn't mean you are in the same league as players in Gold ranks. SOLUTIONS TO THIS PROBLEM: - Simply remove prowess-based matchmaking completely and apply the same matchmaking rules for all players in the same rank divisions. If not possible read bellow: - Prowess should align with the current highest rank, not the all-time highest. Dropping to lower ranks should decrease the prowess accordingly, just like in Tekken 7. Then prowess matchmaking would be a fair experience for all players. - Implement separate prowess ratings for each character used for matchmaking purposes, while maintaining a total prowess score across all characters (not used in matchmaking). RESULTS AFTER IMPLEMENTED SOLUTIONS: - Equal and fair matchmaking rules for all players in the same rank divisions. - More enjoyable experience when learning and playing new characters - Ranks will be become more relevant, and the difference in difficulty across rank divisions will be more noticeable and universal for all players, as the Battle Ruler rank shouldn't feel almost like fighting in Tekken King (due to prowess-based matchmaking) for one group of players (highed prowess), and feel like fighting in Ruler ranks for other group of players (lower prowess). - Skilled players will progress out of lower ranks quicker, and smurfing will diminish over time. - Players using multiple characters will not face consequences of higher prowess."

@@TheGianGame 1. About blind matchmaking. It's a double-edged sword. I think that you will learn in hard way that you are playing against a high-ranked player. Maybe you will go for some risky set-ups, cheap knowledge checks, or go for throws that probably are not working. I like to know if the player on other side is good, and play from the start with better concertation, deceiving mind-games, and switch obvious timings into less obvious etc. I'm adapted from the start. But you said there, not everybody feels the same about it. 2. This point is completely valid. I don't know too much about how point system works, but I know and hear all the time how it is bad and not fair. 3. Mandatory Ft2 would be amazing. If they force Ft2 as in tournament format, then tournament rules should be applied. You cannot leave Ft2 after the first match or when it's 1-1, you will be DQ-ed in tournaments. If we are forced to play tournament format, at least give us proper tournament format. Your video "The unsolved PROBLEM of T8" triggered me thinking about prowess matchmaking, and when I started playing a new character I exactly noticed what you said in that video. I hope they do something. We are doing what we can, pointing out problems and proposing solutions. What they will do about it, we can't know :). Stay safe, bro!

@@Leather_Warlord I absolutely agree with this. I hope devs are gonna do something about ranked because it's really stressful. I achieved Bushin and in one day I dropped to Kinshin and Raijin sometimes and took me a few weeks and a lot of effort to get back my Bushin. It was a lot harder to play against these ranks than first time I was achieving them. I just want to reach Tekken King and forget about word ''ranked''. I believe it is my limit at the moment.

It's not that Ranks are useless. Having ranked based matchmaking and skill based matchmaking at the same time is the main issue with Tekken right now.

Unfortunately prowess based matchmaking is NOT skill based. As unreliable as rank may be at tracking absolute skill, prowess arbitrarily and stealthily adjusts the difficulty of achieving any particular rank.

Rank is a better indicator of skill than prowess even though its not perfect. This is because you can lose your rank if you play poorly.

@@tek87 Yes and that would be totally fine. But, if Harada wanted to have a Prowess based matchmaking it would have been a little bit more clever to have ranks like - for example - LoL. You can get Tekken God, but only for the Season.

The prowess problem can be compared to taking a university exam that is graded on a curve - and because you got high marks on a previous test, you are given a more difficult exam BUT graded on the SAME CURVE as the other students. You must work harder to achieve the same outcome. The issue IS NOT that you didnt get an A or that the test is difficult. Rather, the issue is that the testing metric is nonsensically unfair to achieve the same result. And the other students have no idea theyre on easy mode.

I got to tekken king the a few weeks back, and then got demoted as far as Fujin, after catching a few lose streaks. Gaming in 230k Fujin games was hands down the worst experience I had with the game so far - I got people with 340-350k prowess, or got forced into playing very niche matchups that I knew nothing about, and lots of Yoshis as well (if you look at my match history right now - you'd think that Yoshi, Raven, Zafina and Asuka are the most popular characters in the game). I'm back at Kishin as of yesterday, almost through to Bushin. One thing I'd recommend - play on the day, when you had a decent sleep, and feel energetic, getting out of this crap requires only consistency with stuff that you've learned before, usually.

Its a weird things isnt it? That rank is even intimidating. I got to Fujin and got so excited that I was getting decent at the game. Once in Fujin I literally lost so much I got sent back down close to eliminator. Im back to battle ruler and sometimes I can even beat kishin's, and sometimes lose to mighty rulers. I think there should be more ranks inbetween or something

The main issue is having two different rank systems, being a tekken god but using a side character that’s Fugin, is the same thing as a guy that’s a black belt in karate putting on a yellow belt to be able to fight someone with less experience then them, of course they’re gonna win, the fix is to just have a player rank imo, it also doesn’t help that you get punished for going on a losing streak, even when the person that beat you can be 3 ranks higher

As someone who isn't really affected playing in Gold rank Queue (255k+, highest rank achieved Tekken God so far) its quite strange seeing how it affects people who just get shunted into that bracket after achieving king or emp, my friends were talking about it and at first I was like... just get good? til they convinced me to make library share another account to Emperor and my word prowess SBMM is a thing, I got to emp with a near 80% winrate on a side character. My honest feelings is that, I personally do prefer just fighting in GoD queue as when I'm learning a new character I do want to spend most of my time fighting good level players to rapidly improve that character and I don't want to particularly ruin someones day just running them over because they don't know high level of play concepts. If you're in that gold rank matching without having the baseline "ability" I genuinely believe with time and focus, youll become a product of that environment and rise to that level if you take it seriously enough. If you don't want to take the game that seriously, you should just consider Tekken King as your God of Destruction because after that all you're going to fight are people who play in tournament or just sweats the game out, and if you're not willing to put in the same effort you're just going to ruin the game for yourself. Just my opinion as someone who's in this queue who doesn't struggle to get characters to gold ranks.

@Ashrahan I agree on everything really, I think only that they should find a way to split those high and blue ranks without having them double layered on each other. When you are grinding for those ranks and suddenly you realise they did not have the value you thought, it might be very demoralizing (especially for newer players), as you might feel like the game system tricked you in making you feeling stronger of what you really are! As a veteran my anger is rather towards the system itself, especially after having launched my channel my target as a Tekken player is very high and at the same time having a lot of understanding of the game I can understand what is happening and understand my level and my flaws easily (working on them is different ahah). A new player on the other end would find himself potentially lost, as I think the combination of the aggressive gameplay and this kind of matchmaking could bring you to easily reach Tekken king to then nose dive into battle ruler in 10 matches! What do you think about it?

@TheGianGame It's weird because even in Tekken 7, you'd have a decent time cruising to Orange, even Red after the system change to ranked and instead of hitting a queue wall, you just had a ranked wall where you couldn't just push into mighty ruler as that's where TGP Alts and better players were coasting around so it was alot more clear that, yeah, you're not good enough for purple ranks so for someone newer it was alot more obvious to measure yourself. I must do x and y to be able to fight these people. Tekken 8 is alot more draconic with this, instead of, you cannot pass this wall, it becomes you cannot climb back up the wall to where you were, and you're just stuck in a literal purgatory where you cannot avoid playing against people who take the game seriously, it's alot like the SBMM systems in fps games where they sort of protect the newer players but you can literally see your matchmaking elo above your health bar so you know what's up. I don't necessarily want the system removed, but they should do a better job of explaining it and giving a warning once they hit King, they're going to be put into that kind of environment matchmaking wise or quite literally just disable it on every character who has not achieved Tekken King so it can be allevaited if you do dabble in an alt, but the characters who is tekken king is just cooked, forever in that purgatory. Maybe even just prevent the character who reached tekken King unable to demote back into blue so you can call yourself hardstuck Tekken King

I reached raijin by utilizing punishes and foot control. I got demoted hard a few weeks back to battle ruler when I was a fujin and it’s bcuz I was getting mashed on constantly. But once I got to raijin which is my current rank I don’t run into the people you mentioned who mash it’s mainly ppl who have tekken god or higher and playing there subs. I definitely want to continue utilizing punishes and expanding my fundamentals but I hope the game fixes its system later on but you definitely earned a new sub and I’m glad you spoke about this since not a lot of KZbinrs talk about it

This has been my experience too. I made it up to Fujin once but had a bad losing streak and got knocked back down to Mighty Ruler. Now I absolutely cannot break past Flame Ruler, even though I've improved significantly since then. Really weird system.

I really hope they're listening to the fans on the topic of rant I got 3 problems 1. prowess based and ranked based at the same time is stupid. I don't mind running into Tekken Gods and GoD on my Tekken King Jin, I'm comfortable with that. It's when I'm trying to go on my lower characters that I haven't labbed as much and they got boosted cuz of Jin I have a problem. The whole point I'm in quick play on my purples is to learn more about the character so I can rank them up. I ain't learning shit against a god of destruction lmao. Also prowess should be 1 character if that's the case because if I rank up multiple characters, it's gonna give me a much higher prowess than I would've had only doing the one, they're literally encouraging smurfs. 2. ranked points. It's stupid that I lose more points against someone higher than me, and I got less points than I lost for beating them. 3. Plugging, people still do it, they need to do something about it. Only thing they did was ban Lowtiergod, a fucking nobody.

1. Absolutely agree! Play with subs is not enjoyable in this game, especially in quick matches! 2. I am neutral on losing more point than gaining on high ranks, it balances the buffered demotion. I dislike the loss of full points against +4 / +5 ranks opponents. Very unfair at any level!!! 3. I don't meet many of them one or two a week. You should get the victory though!

Since you mentioned the points, I'll do a quick response to that, then I'll talk about prowess. I actually like this point system, and honestly I think it should apply to all ranks, not just from Fujin and up. Losing more points than you win can be frustrating, sure, but it also makes the ranks feel earned, which isn't something I can say is true for the lower ranks where you gain more points than you lose. You can grind up to Fujin because even if you're bad, if you play enough matches, by winning more points than you lose, you'll get the rank, but the same can't be said about higher ranks because just grinding isn't enough, you actually have to earn it. Now, regarding prowess. There's no defending that system, and to me, it's sad that many times when people complain about it, a common response is "you just wanna beat up weaker players". Like, what if, those "weaker players" are actually the players on my level? I'm in the same boat as you, got to TK once, got massive prowess boost, and got demoted almost to Ruler straight away, managed to not get demoted, but eh, it's clear that I'm playing above my paygrade, and just getting back to Bushin was a chore. Yesterday, I met the same guy with like 300k+ 3 times, 2 times in a row and then played a couple opponents and ran into him again, and my last opponent for the session was almost at 400k prowess, and those players are really common. I can't keep up, those opponents aren't on my level, they're far above it.

On the point system I am not referring to the fact of losing more point than you win; but rather losing full point against someone that is 5 ranks above you (which translates into "Raijin vs Tekken God", that is the part of the point system I don't agree with

Honestly, I think more people would be more ok with it if they'd remove the "no demotion till Yellow" and apply this point system from the get go, not just from Fujin. To me, the points system just makes the higher ranks feel more earned so that's why I have no issues with it.

I think that rank isn't pointless, but that people make a big deal about their rank way too much, rather than using what it is; a tool. When I was on my early days of getting into Tekken online, I thought it was end all be all being a high rank, but then realized it wasn't a big deal, and it was important to study the game than having some ego trip for having a fancy nameplate by your name. Then later down the line of my online Tekken experience, I bump players higher rank that were good as me or worse. It shattered the illusion that rank isn't the end goal. That some people care more for winning and their rank rather than learning the game. I rarely play rank at the end T7 and played/learn way more from player matches. I haven't played T8 yet, but see a huge issue of it not being mandatory to do a set of 2 out of 3, not emulating competitive offline play rules, and people just win/lose quiting are only doing it for a nameplate and a ego boost.

I think that there are a bunch of players that only play to get a higher ranks as you describe in the last lines of your comments, at the same time I believe ranked is a very important part of the game, being the most played as well by the community. It is a good metric to give you an idea about where you are in your TK journey, the important is living it the right way (which it is easier said than done).

There are way too many blue ranks that are absolute garbage, and would essily get kicked all the way back to purple or red in tekken 7, but since they're shielded from the true blue ranks and tekken gods, tekken gods cannot gate keep blue.

First tekken. Reached fujin with 188k prowess. Got slapped silly back to mighty ruler, worked hard for a week and got fujin back. Now its just me fluctuating between fujin, ive been 1 win from promo 5 times but cant seal the deal. Been demoted and promoted back prolly 50 times ngl. I spent MONTHS at Bushin before finally hitting Tekken King, which sent my prowess from 200k → 240k. I went all the way down to Might Ruler and it has been total sweat to get back Fujin. My ranked matches are like 99% one character. Totally different selection of players now.. It's rare to fight

Not necessarily on average levels: lot of people ranks several characters to purple with 1 or 2 mains to Fujin and they achieve almost TK prowess and they are possibly in a even worse position. You could make that argument if the influence of the "skills" you get would be higher and getting s+ on those more difficult.

Just play quick play. I have a strategy to ranking up were i would play quick play until i can confidently beat players 2 ranks higher than me. Then i go back on ranked and literally go on a 8 winstreak to rank up. The prowess matchmaking is the same for quick play so you still get matched up with tekken kings and gods. I just got to tekken king the other day and I've started my quick play grind. Trust me, the stat works, in quick play people are just as eager to win, the only difference is that you sometimes run into lower prowess players.

I have somewhat of a different experience. I am Bushin, never went any higher, so prowess is around 190k. Since the change to matchmaking (I was Tenryu back then) all my opponents are of a higher prowess than me, and since I got to Fujin, they're all above 270k, with some around 370k (multiple character G.O.D). Also, since that change, I find that the sweeping majority of players either one and done or plug, which sours the experience even further, especially since ranked is littered with characters that have a full set of cheese tools at their disposal (King, Alisa, Xiaoyu, Hwoarang etc.), playing ranked is rarely fun because of that, and it's a big problem in the long run, as player retention is purely dependent on how fun ranked is.

Watch me getting to TK for the first time only having 210k and then skyrocketing to 240k just for reaching that rank. Getting instantly matched with 250k+ prowess players that have 1 or more character in tekken god supreme or god. Demoted back to fujin in a 10 loss streak. I still have 230k prowess but im matching 280k battle rulers that are WAY stronger than 95% of ppl I was facing at bushin before getting Tekken King. I cant get out of Fujin now cause all the matches are an insane sweatfest(which I dont mind, its fun). Im basically playing at Tekken King level but in Fujin ranks which make 0 sense.

I versed a tekken God when I was shinryu I got one set off of him which I'm proud of. The reason why I was so low in rank was becoz better players were picking up new characters.

Im a 191000 fujin kazuya and i always play against bushin kishin and tekken kings. I rarely get my rank, even if i get demoted to battleruler i still play against kishins and bushins

Another huge problem is that since playing alt characters inflates prowess, ranking up many alts means the game can start pretending you've hit a rank that you never did. Every character you have ever ranked up increases your prowess. It does not matter if you got demoted since prowess ignores deranks. So the prowess system basically punishes you if you rank up too many characters. This is one of the reasons so many people are simply making new accounts for their alt characters.

@@KarlKognitiv No, you're completely wrong. It ignores deranks. Notice that when you hit Tekken King, for example, you get a 30k prowess boost. But when you get deranked, it does not decrease by 30k. Same thing for other ranks; if you get Fujin, you boost from about 150k to 180k. But deranking from Fujin will not reverse that. What's confusing you is the fact that account letter grades affect prowess slightly (throw breaks, combo damage, "ambition", "respect", etc.). This is why prowess will sometimes go up/down by a few hundred points. But these are temporary and are almost always reversed if you keep playing.

It has nothing to do with staying deranked. Did you even watch the video? The guy deranked from Tekken King down to low blue, AND HE STILL HAS 240K PROWESS. That completely disproves your point. Tons of people in the comments section are saying the same happened to them. You have no idea what you're talking about. As I explained, the prowess decreases only come from letter grade decreases that have NOTHING to do with your rank, and they can be reversed just by playing even if you don't rank up. The 30k prowess increases that comes from reaching Ruler/Fujin/Tekken King cannot be undone. I wish people would stop making claims about a system they don't understand.

I always look at the Tekken Prowess if they have 200k higher than the usual rank then I know I’m gonna have a tough time 😂. I wish the Tekken Prowess was only towards to 1 character because I love playing my sub characters and that raised my Prowess pretty high facing super try hards 😂 which I don’t mind makes the game fun.

You're absolute right. They matchup you with 240-400 prowess players only after you hit Tekken King. And the big problem is before you hit this mark you play actually against trash players without fundamentals. I got deranked to Rajin from TK. It is absolute ridiculous. And they made it on purpose. New people should be encouraged to play since they can achieve Tekken King. And people who achieved this rank should play longer and longer to achieve it again. I deleted this game. :D The fuck with it. To be honest..its only worth playing it much, when youre quite young and want to become GoD and go tournaments etc. Else it makes not sense to play this game for 15 hours/week. And for fun there are plenty other better games to play than such a stressful fighting game.

I installed the game again. Now Im bushin again. I play now ranked for 2.5 hours max to keep my concentration high. Every match is difficult. But Im improving. Next goal: tekken King afterwards tekken god.

I have this problem as well I had one character at mighty ruler and 16 at garyu and above and now I've just hit fujin for the first time and am at 226k prowess and the people that I am fighting against are just far better players than me that have been in ranks ill never reach and it has got me to a point where it will nearly be impossible to rank up as I'm now fighting people who have the fundamentals of tekken kings and higher while I've got the fundamentals of at max a raijin. its just in general a flawed system that does not take into account the exceptions that play a lot of characters.

You gotta create a new account and start fresh with 1 character only that way your prowess matches your skill level

@@manniepas1769 I did think of that but the worst people to fight aren't the ones that are far better than you it's the ones that are far worse and spending all that time to get back to fujin would be miserable but thanks for the advice I still might in the future if it becomes miserable to play on my account

I hit tekken king with Panda, and then i deranked all the way down to fujin. I'm learning yoshi right now so I can rank him up, but it's gonna be harder now that I'm forced to play others with my prowess. Running into never ending 240k

How does one get all the way to Tekken king and then somehow derank all the way to fujin. Did u just have a really good run on the way up and have a bad day afterwards or something?

Ranks have no meaning purple ranks still play like red and blue play like purple with a bit knowledge but the fact I beat them at a red rank kinda confuse me. Fundamentals in this game left the room people on playing on pluse frame and aggression and characters that are cheese abuse and exploite on you

Try to do not use the same ranks metric there were for Tekken 7, fundamentals players are there, you just have to find them!😉

I am paul main in tekken king and my second main leo in raijin and i have been matched with 250 to 350 thousend prowes and it was very hard for me to play leo aginst someone higher than me or using his first main they should atleast match you with your rank based on character and your prowes but not with someone is higher than me with 400+ prowes

Its a common true you didn't found the weel we all aware of this thing but i think its fair i am tekken king if i choose to play with any sub character its better for me to play against the best an not the the weakest just to take my rank back if you cant win everyone you just doesn't deserve the rank even if you had it one time doesn't mean anything if you cant be consistent i dont get bother if i lose to someone better than..me If he has more prowess or whatever i get frustrated only if i cant understand how i lose ...i search on net i practice a lot and then the rank it comes it shelf so for me an advise stop making excuses be better if not just.. Accept the fact that out there there are people monsters of reflexes and speed and focus mind... And they deserve that rare rank that why its raree its not supposed to be for every one

I play ranked only with one character and my Prowess is quite low for my ranks. I don't see any issues on rankeds.

Exactly, i only play jack 8 basically and im at Bushin/Tekken King with 190k prowess or something and dont have a problem with matchmaking so far

A guy with lets say with 180 000 points and vanquisher rank (probably because its not his main) is already a pro guy. And me, a 116 000 player with shinryu/ganryu/tenryu rank beats a player that is better than me but I only get 100 points because his rank is lower than mine (vanquisher). It even throws 220 000 ganryus against me as if it's a fair match. I even fight against Bushin and Kishin. How stupid is that?

When you play with something at stake adds an extra layer of difficulty, it is kind of comparable to play in a tournament

Don't let this system influence you. (I know is didfficult!!) Play as many characters as you want and eventually you'll set into your ranks. Do NOT get demotivated if you lose any: A LOST RANK CAN ALWAYS BE TAKEN BACK!! Anyway prowess jumps from Bushin to TK before is quite linear

@TheGianGame there’s no way to set in your ranks when you play many characters. Someone with 5 mains will be stuck at fujin as someone with one main at emporer or Tk Who is the same skill. I’m about to just make a new account this shit is so stupid. I’m gonna start smurfing so hard that it’ll discourage new players and maybe force Bamco to take a look at this system. No offence guys, regardless of what your rank is, if you’re stuck there and can’t get out, even if technically you’re playing people who are better because of a secondary skill matching. You’re still stuck because the opponent played better than you in those matches. This isn’t CoD or Fortnite with clearly bs EOMM which means trash players can become high ranks and stay high ranks even if they’re not that good. Eventually these players will be knocked down if they’re losing more than winning. Tekken doesn’t adjust your gameplay like those games do or inputs on purpose. It just groups you with players that will give you a challenge based on how well you’re playing. Don’t let it discourage you, it’s part of the journey of improvement!

The point I am trying to make is very simple: If I have 180k prowess, I can EASILY keep my rank steady on Bushin and have a decent win rate If I have240k prowess, Blue ranks step up in the level and becomes a completely different category. The criticism is not into the rank loss itself but in the lack of value of them as those relate to your prowess.

Many blue ranks need to get humbled hard and demoted back to ruler. Its increidbly frustrating to have to deal with people that mash when theyre -9 in a rank that high, its just so dumb. I got demoted from tekken king 4 times and it was miserable to get back because of this busted ranked system.
