This was the crucial World Cup match between holders Brazil and Hungary at Goodison Park Everton in the 1966 World Cup finals. Brazil had beaten Bulgaria earlier 2-0 with goals from Pele and Garrincha and must beat the Hungarians to confirm their quarter final ticket. But Pele had to sit out for this clash as he had been injured against Bulgaria.Tostao the nineteen year old took his place. It was twelve years back that Hungary had beaten Brazil 4-2 in the quarter final infamous for being recalled as the "Battle of Berne". Gilmar,Bellini,Garrincha and Djalma Santos played what would be their last World Cup match as Hungary with Florian Albert in top form won 3-1.It was Brazil's first World Cup defeat in as many years since being humbled by the same opponents in 1954. Yes that setback against Hungary signalled the beginning of the end for Brazil.Their hopes of a World Cup hattrick evaporated with this defeat.

Great match. Hungary's second goal was such a beauty. It's interesting to compare this match with "modern" ones . . . notice that the referee doesn't act like people came to watch HIM! Soccer / football / futbol is great . . . . FIFA smells!

What a pity the Hungarians could not have got past USSR in the last 8 at Middlesboro. It would have made for a fascinating semi final with Germany back here at Everton, and a chance for them to avenge Berne 12 years earlier. For Puskas and Hidegkuti read Albert and Bene. The success of this side coming on the back of the win in the fairs cup by Ferencvaros of Hungary the years before. They are certainly second only to the team of 54 that so cruelly lost the final.

The Brazilians were twice World Cup champions in 1958 and in 1962 and were looking to achieve an historic World Cup hattrick in the 1966 World Cup finals in London. Brazil under manager Vicente Feola were optimistic because that had Pele at 25 the greatest ever footballer.A World Cup victory in London would mean that Brazil would keep permanent possession of the Jules Rimet trophy. But despite the optimism,Brazil were unimpressive in warm up matches and could only manage a 1-1 draw with Scotland at Hampden Park. If that was not enough the squad that travelled to London had several veterans who had featured in Brazil"s World Cup success in Sweden and in Chile.Men like Bellini,Gilmar,Orlando,Djalma Santos,Garrincha and Zito were key men in those two successful World Cup campaigns but in 1966 they had aged.But Pele was still young at 25 but even he was a veteran. Brazil started off well beating Bulgaria 2-0 with goals from Pele and Garrincha. But in the next match with Hungary at Goodison Park it was a match Brazil must win.Brazil had not been beaten in a World Cup match since they lost to Hungary 4-2 in the quarter finals of the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland.The same opponents Brazil would face at Goodison Park. Talisman Pele was out as Tostao replaced him.But Hungary with Florian Albert in top form carved out a 3-1 win.And Brazil as Cup holders would lose by the same margin to Portugal in the next match.Pele played against the Portuguese.It was a match Pele was hacked down by Jaimie Graca.Pele was virtually a passenger for the rest of the match. Yes Brazil were dethroned by Portugal but they would make amends four years later in Mexico.

I was an 11-year-old Hungarian boy in Budapest, and I didn't even understand what the adults around me were happy about. I'm going to point out that the announcer said at the end: the referee didn't award the fourth Hungarian goal because he didn't believe that the Brazilians could score four goals. And now I can finally see this match again, and it's amazing how much the game has changed since 57 years have passed.

Essa Seleção Brasileira, apesar de contar com grandes jogadores, alguns deles viriam a ser tri campeões mundiais em 70, era muito desorganizada. Foram convocados um grande número de jogadores e não se conseguiu armar uma grande equipe. O que se viu foi um time muito bagunçado e facilmente batido por Portugal e Hungria. Não passamos da primeira fase.

This is so much better than today's game! Both teams attack, play fast, actually shoot on goal. What difference between that and today's slow, boring "possession footbal" where they just pass the ball around ad nauseam without moving forward and no one ever shoots on goal, outside of set pieces.

And in this match with Hungary Garrincha,Djalma Santos,Gilmar and Bellini took to the field but Pele was absent.Tostao took over Pele's place and the latter scored a beautiful goal off a freekick. That defeat to Hungary was Brazil's first in the World Cup since losing to the same opponents in the quarterfinal stage of the 1954 World Cup.
