for me I’ve always found the amount and explicitness when depicting sexual violence in berserk to be very strange. I’m not saying that media can’t touch on these topics I think some media does an amazing job at navigating these really hard topics and are able to tell very strong powerful stories. when it comes to Beserk I can’t help but feel that some of these scenes feel placed in for shock value. My other issues lies with how explicitly they have chosen to show sexual violence. A lot of other media opt to imply or show very little and it gets the point across of what occurred and these media are still able to tell just as powerful of a story. Sometimes it just feels really unnecessary and again shock value heavy. Also the amount of beserk fans who will Bend over backwards to fight over this sort of thing always spooks me lol. At the end of the day I think it just could’ve been handled better because I do believe you can tell dark stories that involve dark topics there’s just better ways to go about it. :0

For me it's depiction of morality is cartoonish and is an unrealistic and not relatable way of how it works. It's almost as if the mangaka bases an action on how much shock value it can bring to the audience as opposed to how relatable it can be and how much you can connect with it. I tend to like grounded, relatable characters like an Edward or Alphonse Elric from FMAB as an example.

I think that the shock value is good. Its realistic. Berserk shows us what war truly is, what evil truly is, it evolves far past an "edgelord archetype" as it unequivocally condemns all these actions and the narrative is clearly meant to make you feel disgusted. The best examples of this is the berserker armour, the presentation of cascas psyche in the elfhelm arc, and the wyald arc. The chapters that delve into cascas psyche is proof of berserks motives and lessons. It displays the trauma endured by a victim perfectly, and manages to convey it from the viewpoint of someone who has become disabled because of it. The berserker armour shows us that the fighting and the cool moments from guts arent without sacrifice, everytime he does this, his psyche erodes and even guts hesitates. In the chapters showing cascas psyche, it also shows us the extent to which gut's psyche has been damaged due to the situations hes in. Also the 5 arcs that show gut's development from an edgy man to a man who cares for his only loved one and fights to the death to protect her from his horrible world. its not the shows fault if some weirdos take it the wrong way, that will happen no matter where you look and what show.

Miura wasn’t edgy like some misconstrued fans that follow the wrong teachings of the actual story. There are edgy teenagers that read berserk for blood gore and sex and take a very nihilistic take on the story as it is a very pessimistic tale taken at face value but miura and fans like myself view it more nuanced then stuff that is outright shown with the grotesque. Berserk is a story of over coming obstacles and fighting against the futility of your existence portrayed mostly by guts. And guts is a depiction of Nietzsche ubermentsch philosophy save for the final stage known as the child which basically for the ubermentsch is the end goal of being ambitious and ruthless with your goals but also creative,imaginative and kind like a innocent child balancing the ruthlessness of adulthood with the valued traits of a child. Miura was not the type to write a character especially a kid to be SA’d just for the lols or even at all for story purposes. The ending of berserk he said would be a GOOD ending a SA death ending for schierke makes no sense and Miura even said as much in terms for guts and since guts and her are heavily connected you can rest assured she is here to stay she is basically his surrogate child. Now there are characters that are alluded to have SA’d children in berserk like wyald but it’s never went into detail just glossed over to convey that SA and evil can happen to anyone no one is safe in berserk especially early berserk.

I tried reading berserk after seeing it pop up everywhere in the souls fandom and it started pretty strong but it just became clear that there's a lot of 'gratuity' that isn't necessary. It's genuinely such an exhausting story to read when every time a woman or child appears you're dreading what's going to happen next, not because of any feeling for the world or narrative, but simply out of shock value. I thought it was pretty telling that in the Eclipse, despite the demons being a representation of pure evil, they only perform a horrible act on the woman in the band, when really if we're following the logic that this stuff is happening for the narrative, then surely all the men in the story would be suffering horrible ordeals before they get killed. But apparently all the demon's in Miura's world are interested in just women? Seemed inconsistent and wholly telling of the motivation behind a lot of the content of the story. It's just disgusting with little to redeem it.

The difference with game of thrones is a lot of the horrible stuff is done by a few bad people or the sex scenes have to do with consenting adults. Tbh this video is more informative than I thought, I agree on most of the stuff you said like the sexualy explicit scenes and the flaws in the characters but I think those flaws are supposed to be there because they are humans in the end they can't be perfect, also when the writer bring up the argument of having a goal in life he let's the readers question themselves about their own goals in life and try to seek a goal that makes them feel fulfilled about it or do what they do best and live without regrets.... I definitely agree with you, including on the sexual violence and how many of the fans deliberately don't warn new readers and are upset some disapprove of such graphic imagery. The fans insulting people who dislike the story or making jokes toward Casca and Farnese was one of the reasons why I didn't touch Berserk until this year, along with the controversy of what Casca's ethnicity was (as if her being a Black woman is a problem in the first place if she was.) The reputation of the fandom is that toxic. Berserk's story is okay, though definitely not the top greatest as the fans try to say. The sexual imagery toward mostly female characters or Casca's SA from Griffith being 2 chapters long is a huge problem, not to mention she's one of the main characters being assaulted more than any other female in the story including by her love interest Guts. The only saving grace is that I like Casca (who sadly is in a bad story) and I want her and her son to have a good ending.

I personally disagree with guts being boring because without Griffith he has no goal not every character has to have a motif to drive the story forward, in other stories it's the events and what happens that drives the story forward and the main theme you see in the manga is how a man is put in a dark and really fucked up world that shows from the get go that he does not belong in it but yet he still chooses to fight for his life and stay alive. What really makes me like guts is how he changes throughout the manga and feels and behaves human. I will admit that the first arc was over the top I can understand why he'd be bitter but not that edgy. when an artist creates its typically reflecting the realities of the world as they know it. Muira was a private man so I cant say I know his motivation for the darker shit in the story but it could easily be the atrocities he's observed though his life. I think youre simplifying the story saying it just "weird shit" which is cool, its certainly not for everyone. However, IMO it is a piece of art that needs to be respected. Call out the downfalls but acknowledge the heights. Youre poiting out pivotal aspects and simplifying them which I cant agree with. That can't be an author-insert, right? What's that? Another manga that uses rape as drama from a society with a notoriously questionable relationship with sex? Oh boy, here we go again. And the fans somehow conflate 'discomfort' with 'maturity' - thereby proving to literally everyone that they themselves are completely immature and trying far too hard. Using shock-jock material doesn't make your narrative mature. Maturity stems from the way in which one approaches and handles a given subject - uncomfortable or otherwise. But asking Berserk fans to understand is pretty pointless. There is plenty of literary fiction that deals with uncomfortable topics. And deal with them in ways that doesn't make a big spectacle about the fact that they're addressing this stuff. Have all the weird uncomfortable shit in your story as you like, but stop treating it like a bit of attention-grabbing window dressing. I first came in to the vid skeptical but I watched the 90's anime I didn't know it had all that crazy shit in the early manga 😭. Most of the freaky stuff later in the story I just kinda sped past I never messed with it it just felt weird but the philosophy of the story and in-depth psychology of the characters is what made me love the series. And when I first saw the horse scene I made the joke that it would happen and I was crying when it did.😭

YES Berserk IS weird, but that isn't a judge of the writing nor whether something is good or bad which i think you are trying to imply. Like honestly. And i know it was probably a low brow joke, but do you REALLY think Guts and Casca being assaulted or Farnese, who was young, almost being raped by a demon possessed horse and all scenes portraying degeneracy was written for the purpose of turning people on as if the the average person just ENJOYS that and doesn't find it highly disturbing? I would assume you'd say "no" right? It doesn't have to happen to someone of legal age to be inappropriate and readable because it's still immoral either way, all the worse if it happened to children. That's kinda the whole point is that it's there to disturb you and never has it been added without purpose even if there is a lot of it. I argue all the time there is too much rape in Berserk and it can be hard to read for sensitive people, but it serves the purpose of proving how bad the world is and what Griffith and his greed inflicted on the world hidden in the façade that he's making it better, which is why Guts' character is needed and bounces off him so well. If your sensitive to it and it bothers you too much to read, that's fine and perfectly okay, but Berserk isn't worse because it's weird.

I’m a berserk fan. I really like both Guts and Griffith dynamic. But I agree that the black swordsman arc is insufferably edgy and also don’t like at all how Miura handles women in the manga. I think what makes berserk so good is the way it explores the psyches of each character. As you said, at its core berserk has a quite similar dynamic between its main characters than Naruto. However both Guts and Griffith are incredibly fleshed out compared to Naruto. I’m glad that casca is back now because she will finally get the development that she needs so desperately.

The constant nudity and rape, Wyald, the goat almost raping Casca, the posessed horse scene, Casca and Guts' rushed romance with little to no development, and moments where he's biting Casca on the breast and sleeps with an Apostle, but fans believe they need to stay together. It's called dark fantasy for a reason. Berserk's heavy rape and sexual assault is meant to make the story feel gritty and dark and if your so okay with murder being in stories then what makes grape so much different. The grape isn't always meaningless for example Casca almost gets graped when she's mentally broken but she kills all the people trying to grape her showing that she still has some resemblance of her old self.

But every chapter of Berserk I read I just got proven wrong. The characters have so much depth. The dialogue is borderline poetic. The art is stellar. The themes and messages it conveys are both terrifying and hopeful. Berserk is objectively a near perfect and flawless manga. Not everyone will agree that Berserk is the greatest manga of all time, and I don’t care. Because to me and a lot of people it is. One thing I find absurd tho is how you think its a hot take. Berserk has every reason to deserve that title.
