Maybe this is why you’re not the CEO of a company with a solid history of profitable growth. Their job is to make enough people just happy enough to make more money than the previous year. Nothing more. Literally nothing else. This is what their investors demand. Any company that ignores their investors and panders to its “fans” will go out of business UNLESS enough of the fans stop being customers. ONLY then. The best companies find a good balance. GW is not one of those 😂

They do. That's what the code at the back of the book is for. I think it would be better if they replaced the datasheets and a lot of the in-game info etc with details or stories about individual unit types though. Reading about aquillons or kasrkin or bullgryn or all the other units would be great.

Here's an idea for GW: Don't change your base rules every 3 years! If GW keeps the pattern going 11th Edition of 40K is due out June 2026, and there is a 50/50 chance that all armies will be Indexed again! The last army codex will likely be out less than 6 months, and whatever galaxy shattering event story they play out over several campaign books will also be invalidated. As a longtime player, with that kind of churn rate, I'm surprised anyone plays the game anymore.

Simply selling your IP to Amazon is not sustainable. GW needs to go to a five year rotation and get it right. Hire a proper game designer to get the rules right the first time. Use proper play testing and release nothing without proper editing.

The crazy thing is, to this day people LOVE the old Imperial Armor books which were basically just books of art and lore with narrative-only unit and campaign rules. So the collector-focused coffee table art book full of lore and artwork hasn't just been done before, it's actually still one of the most popular series of rulebooks they ever put out. It introduced readers to never before seen units like the Baneblade, multiple Leman Russ alternative variants, factions and regiments such as the Death Korps of Krieg, and more. Focusing on this sector of the market with high-value collectible books aimed at artists and hobbyists would be a much better use of resources, satisfying the deep pockets of the collector market while free online rules pull players cheaply and efficiently into the core tabletop game. It would also reduce the constant buyer fatigue of players needing to justify multiple rulebook purchases every year just to attend gaming events - a problem that has directly lead to increased piracy and low sales of rulebooks and codex equivalents not only for 40k itself but several other game systems.

@@DaRedWunzGoFasta It's worth noting also that those IA books aren't valuable because of any rules, all of which are outdated by several editions now. It's the art, lore and campaign inspirations that many Warhammer enthusiasts still seek out. When's the last time you intentionally opened a rulebook or codex for a previous edition for any reason other than winning an online argument? bu8t any time I see Imperial Armor on a shelf, I crack it open and gaze longingly at models I've never seen on a real tabletop, wondering how they'd look in my collection.

Got the CSM codex and cards. Excited to see what was in it. Everything useful that wasn't on the cards like the army and detachments rules, enhancements and stratagems, could have been printed on a dozen cards and saved me the cost of the book. The points values in the book were invalid before I even opened the book. I'd love to get a love letter-type book that expands on the crusade rules, adding in old units for casual play, ideas for painting and building your army. General fluffy goodness. Army rules that are fluffy would be nice, too.

I've been playing Wh40k since end 2nd edition, on and off... After 7th edition, that's 8th and onward, I've noticed that most of the general rules and the codeci suck. 1. Point vaulue wrong or invalid in a week or even on launch. 2. Rules get erata-ed on launch. 3. Forget special rules par unit. 4. The codex is underwhelming at launch. Since they droped 'destroyer weapons' for 'mission objectives' balancing went out of the window. There is also the hero power creep that forces folk if they want to play competetive to play with as many big names as possible. This is also pushed for lore lovers.

I've been saying for months , because GW always has statements floating around that their Warhammer+ doesn't do as well as they hoped. They should be offering up the Codex's as a digital purchase through that for a reduced cost. This would solve an issue of not being able to have it available , and for some who just need the data sheets updated in the app. I'd rather pay 20-25 bucks for just getting the army unlocked instantly because as it stands now which is F'n stupid when new codex drops your army LOCKS OUT from data sheets even tho you ALREADY purchased the last codex. It's a real slimy way of doing business and Im shocked no one has called them out on that bullshit. Like how do you FORCE my app to lock the army I paid for , plus the codex I already paid for just because I didn't get the new book day 1, but not offer up a digital purchase to unlock the army in the app?..

GW’s business model is the buy in from new people getting into the hobby. Not veterans who buy in dribs and drabs. Yeah I’d rather Gw gave me a bunch of free stuff, they obviously won’t if they can make money. They dominate the market. The upside of them dominating the market is I will always have people to play, events to go to, and the game will never die. Good luck with the two or so guys at your local club who play Trench Crusade, who won’t be playing it in a years time. 😂 Then guess what you have to move city, and now you don’t have anyone to play against as nobody plays it at the new place. 😂😂😂😂

It is crazy times. Haven't played a game in over a decade. Started out with 2nd or 3rd edition as a kid. Started collecting models again over the last 1.5 years. Couldn't even get rid of my old space marines since the primaris changes. Still have old usable guard and now a lot of newer Astra Militarum blended in (mind you I got rid of my Catachans for the sake of cohesion). I used to buy many codices for imperial forces. I had every space marine codex. I would buy all the Imperial Guard/Catachan/Ordo Malleus etc. codex. They were cool. They had rules and stats but they also had the lore and painting etc. They were cheap and appreciated. The fact they can't produce a clean copy to push out on day 1 is a real sad testament to where the company is these days. For too long now, GW appears to be geared towards extracting maximum profits from all interactions. They no longer make a cool product and let its coolness get new people involved. Now they're heavily invested in TV/movies/games etc. to keep bringing in new crowds to the models. Milking every existing customer for everything you can get doesn't lead to long-term growth. Rules should be something online that is available to everyone for your game (paid subscription, sure) out of fairness and to ensure things are kept balanced and updated. I still buy GW products because I loved the kits. I still buy GW books because I love the lore. I'll probably teach my kids about the game as they get older. I have no interest in having to re-buy my army every few years or re-buy all the reading materials every two years. I don't see myself playing any games in the near future aside from maybe Necromunda/Kill Team etc. at the small end. The primaris BS really left a sour taste in my mouth. I've started to purchase 3D printed models as I have not interest in playing at a GW event in the future. I may even just get a 3D printer in the future and complete my "dream" army that way. They can kill my love for the game but they can't kill my love for the universe they created. Enjoyed the video and wasn't my first time seeing you pop up on the channel. All the best in the future.

How the codex works today is fundamentally flawed. The game of 40k is right now a living game where the rules gets updated regularly several times a year. The codexes are written months in advance due to them needing to be sent to the printer. That means when the codex are released the rules have probably changed in such a way that the codex are incompatible with the updated rules. Add to that a varying quality of how well the codexes seems to be written and a lack of QA and the codexes clearly doesn't have the quality needed for such a premium pricepoint.

Faq on day one is ridiculous. I feel your idea about all rules online and make codexes for the other things you said. That way if they go nuts with pictures you arent looking at rules on a page then have to skip 3 pages to keep reading.

Better to have constant updated then waiting a year to fix broken armies... and no I don't want them to spend more time per codex because I don't want to wait a decade for a new one if mine just came out. The rules are easy to find online for free and if you go to a GW event you have to buy in... that's the cost. (Btw feel free to complain I know you're just complaining about a game you love and the company making money by taking advantage of that love...just being the devil's advocate)

If you’re looking for a similar game that you can use your existing models, look at Mantic Firefight. There’s one book with everything.

The ability to continually update digitally has become widespread in our societies. Release it in 'Beta' is the norm. With quarterly updates and players using online tools, GW has a lot less incentive to 'get it right' before release. As long as people keep buying the codices, this will continue, and I suspect if codex sales decreased, we might see the codex go away. As to 'lore only' books, I doubt those would sell well at all. Just look at how many times lore and art books for various media end up in the discount bin at regular book stores.

This is why i completely quit 40k. Gw absolutely does not respect their customers anymore and sadly people will continue to fall for the same bs gw pulls. Kill team is a far better game. I'm just playing 3rd edition for 40k.

I could go into much more detail, and I’m sure this won’t be the most popular take, but here’s how I think it should work. No had copy books at all. No print on demand, no printing available as that’s going to make it so that GW will never do this. But, make everything digital and inside the Warhammer App for both 40K and AoS. You pay $15 per month, and you get access to every single set of rules out there for every faction plus the big rule book and all lore that would usually be found in the codex. Directly update those rules with all errata, FAQs, points, etc. And that’ll just be an add on to what is already available through Warhammer+. As far as a third edition book being worth more than a ninth edition book… that could honestly be value based on rarity for those niche collectors out there that want all of the codices for a given army. It honestly may have nothing to do with the rules in the book. I’m not saying that it’s not the rules that brought the value down, but it may not be.

If they ever figure out to build a strong and balanced core game with decent rules that don’t have to change for a decade. Then you would be able to add flavour to every army with their own army rules. Like a game of chess, you have basic rules on how to play. And to add variety you can buy different pawns with their own rules to play differently. That way the base game stays decent and you can balance within the army rules. Plus, and this might be a very unpopular opinion, they need to cull a whole number of armies. Less armies means easier balancing. But why would a money making machine decided to produce less. So here’s to wishful thinking and I’m glad I’ve decided to skip at least 2025 from buying GW products.
