There's a few things I've learned over my time in this hobby and business: 1) Water is not the same everywhere so not everything works everywhere. 2) What works for some doesn't mean it will work for everyone. 3) Social media fish groups are not the same as having a reliable Mom & Pop shop for advice for their area. And the most important one, #4) Opinions are like Butt holes. Everybody has one. ;) There is no one way to keeping fish. The sooner people realize this, the less stressful #4 becomes. It's just THEIR opinion. 👍

Totally!! I realized this when I moved into my new home about 2 years ago. The water I'm on now is well water and it varies in oxygen level and calcium hardness at any time, so I can't change more than 10-20% without seriously taking risks and potentially losing fish. My old home just 20 miles away, the water out the tap was always consistent and I could do a 60% water change with no big issues. People give advice like it's the gospel, with no experience of different water and sometimes with very little experience of too many different species of fish either.

Agree 100% with you Mike. I had a disagreement with another aquarist about how much a day to feed my fish. I feed 3x a day and one guy said I was killing my fish. I explained to him they were small meals and none of the food ever lasted more than a few minutes. I rarely lose fish so I must be doing something right.

I don't think michael has lost the difference. i think blanket statements are a culprit to disinformation. I wish people would listen more instead of just boasting opinions as facts. people who know the facts, don't have to display outrage, because they know what they did. people who try to "find alternatives" to the facts, are the people that need a reality check. But i do agree, what works for me, might not work for you, might not work for him. But at the point at which you're inflecting your "opinion" as fact they become the problem, and it really boils down to laziness, be it not using the product properly or just not bothering to do research.

You go Michael. I've been in the hobby for so long I just do me. My breeding rear out tanks are bare bottom and almost sterile except for a little algae on the side and back glass. It's worked for my for decades and I certainly won't fault anyone for keeping there's different. I've been using Tetra flakes since the 60's BUT I don't feed that exclusively. I also feed baby brine shrimp and my long go to home made food kind of similar to Repashy. It's based on the original Jack Wattley discus food and Marc Weiss recipe with my own twist. My display tanks are kept with either a sand, gravel or UGF substrate setup. I won't knock anyone who prefers Aqua Soils, dirted or deep substrates. Hey float your own boat. No reason for people to blow up and trash anyone for doing it their way.

What most people don't realize when they're gauging which foods a guppy prefers, is that guppies have an interesting evolved instinct that deals with food preference. If you feed 90% of Food A and 10% Food B, they will focus more on eating Food A. And it's not just because they happen to swim by Food A more often. They realize that Food B is limited, so they adapt their diet to focus more on Food A. In other words, whatever you feed the most of, is going to be their favorite food. Doesn't mean it's the most healthy for them in any way.

Well that sucks, people in this day and age are very arrogant, I feed my fish every 3 days, I have 3 tanks I haven’t done a water change in a year, I had a guy ream me out that I was killing my fish, didn’t care what the test strips said, and how my parameters were perfect, sometimes people suck, Thank God for the good ones.

I was told to seek you out. I have watched your videos before. However, I recently had a run in with "Cookie" where he banned me from a group because several group members were excited about my idea and set up and he banned me for "selling" a product. The OP asked for plant suggestions and when I said my guppies like anacharis grass floating in the tank, attached to suction cups with plastic hooks attached, which keeps it out of the filter. He removed all the other group members asking for pics of my ste up and banned me.

I have some of the same problem at my work. It's like ppl say it is wrong to use your left hand, because the majority is righthanded. I am in the lucky place, that I can use both hand even good to some work, so I place stuff differently on the workplace, and I have been working in multiple labs around my contry, so I have seen there more than one way to do things and still get the same a right result for the klient's sample. Embrass that I think is the best way. But oh no, We have in this place rules, making sure that non-specilised trained labtechnisens (like I actuelly are) can get read the instructions and do the work, and thoose who have writen the rules have only worked this one lab, and they can't embrasse ppl having different skills. 😢.

It took me months to get my store bought cichlids to take live foods. I would never just say a food sucks because fish didn't eat it. I had to deprive them of dry food and start with frozen foods or already dead bugs.

If you look where many of these fish come from water conditions are different to our tanks. Ph, water colour, organic matter, food source even the plants we use. Like most animals if they are not happy the fish will tell you. I preferably feed different types of food so they can get different nutrients from different sources. Many ways to skin a cat if your fish breed generally they are happy.

Hi Mike, I'm going to be setting up a 37 gallon guppy tank with my kiddo and have been watching most of your video backlog to try to brush up on guppy care. It's been almost 12 years since my last fish tank so I'm a little rusty. Lol. I'm planning on feeding the various Repashy foods along with baby brine shrimp I'm planning on hatching every day or so. Trying to convince my husband that I'll need a whole fish room but that'll be a while. Lol. You really know your guppies and I basically want to spoil these fish rotten. Hoping to be able to offload my surplus fish on the LFS 2 hours from my house but even if not, it'll just be a very heavily planted tank with a lot of derpy little guppies. Do you think a group of 1-2 males for 6 females (going to be mutts) would be ok or should I get more females so they're not getting so harassed?

I have no idea what is going on as I have gone in and out of the hobby over the past 25 years and am thinking about getting back into it again, but aquarium hobbyists in general are weird. There is more than 5 ways to do things in this hobby and depending upon the environment, fish, parameters, ... there is not a wrong way. I got sucked into it before. I had huge success when I first started with under gravel filters, then I came back to the hobby again and everyone on message boards said under gravel filters are terrible so I threw my old pennplax filters away. This time around I might go back to under gravel with a power head because I had more success with them before than I did with power filters. HOB, spongs, cannister, and box filters are great, but so is under gravel and at the end of the day they achieve the same purpose, and just pick what works best for you and your fish. Many hobbyists try to achieve consistent perfection 100% of the time but that isn't how these fish survive in nature, because their natural habitats are naturally imperfect and their conditions change daily and sometime hourly. Most fish evolved over 1000s of years to be able to tolerate this. Stemming from from my other interest in radios and deep analytical thought I came to an interesting outlook on life that we made ourselves into digital beings and trying to fit into an analog world that will never be digitalized. We will always be surrounded by different frequencies with different wavelengths and modulations. Ofcouse this doesn't only apply to fish keeping.

I agree, what works for me may not work for someone else. There's one person in my life who tells me I'm absolutely WRONG about everything i say (not just to do with fish). Their opinion is the right one, no one else's is. And they wonder whyI avoid them most of the time? From observation, this person does this sh*t to everyone, not just me. Yep some people choose to be toxic and nasty and others choose acceptance. I've come to the point when this person starts their crap, I just leave. What else can we do? Best wishes to you!! Not worth the aggravation . Fish keeping is too zen of a hobby for some jackboot to rain on my 10 gallon parade. On pay day, if I have a few shekels left after paying bills, and I want to buy a new box filter just because it’s a cool looking one….I figure it’s my business. For me, the hobby is all about trying new and different things when the mood strikes me. I enjoy Michael’s Fish Room because of the awesome advice, fresh ideas and inspiration …all delivered with a fun and light-hearted tone. The “my way or the highway” mentality is best left to twitter. Me? I’ll just zone out the noise while my betta swims back and forth for me.

Different ways / schedules / amounts like water at changes and food and lighting, I agree totally. However there are some fundamental necessities, that need to be followed for health and welfare of the fish being kept. For instance; just because a person uses windex to clean their glass and top frame ( inside and out ) doesnt fall under different ways. Its wrong. Your point is understood only by people who can understand it. I hear you loud and clear. I know there are many ways to skin a cat, so to speak. I also bet that some peoples fishkeeping programs make you very sad, for the fish being kept.. So glad to hear you are well after heart attack. ps I sub'd ! so there lol

I get a kick outta the wanna be gurus that parrot some of the age old myths presuming they must be correct because they 'heard' it from an 'experienced fishkeeper'. But you're absolutely right Michael, there are many paths to successful fishkeeping and what works well 'here' might not work as well 'there'. There are so many variables that nearly no two fish tanks are exactly alike, even tanks side by side. You just gotta take it all with a grain of salt (although I don't use salt in my aquariums! - lol) So take a deep breath and get in yer yoga position and relax...but sorry you lost a 'friend' (although I guess he really wasn't a real friend to begin with)...but life goes on!
