On April 6, 2024, from the hills on the outskirts of Kalamata, Greece, Dimitri Lascaris ranted about the arrogance of corporate 'journalists'.

Dear Dimitri, I have been an investigative journalist in years past, I have produced, directed, and written documentaries, and films with high caliber artists, musicians, movie stars. I too rejected legacy media matrix in favor of Truth. I have watched your youtube stream for about 1 year, and I am particularly grateful for your work and the selfless manner in which you approach each adventure, subject matter, and especially the manner in which you uncover, and reveal the essence of Truth in the Mid-East. In fact, I'm surprised youtube hasn't censored your Zionist expose', and the very good work you have done reporting atrocities of the innocent Palestinian citizenry, and the genocidal bloodshed the IDF/Israeli/zionists are committed to on a daily basis. Please continue to do what you do, you are highly valued.

The brand of journalism utilized by MSM outfits, from CBC on the supposedly left of the spectrum to the National Post on the right, by using too much of officially defined, politically prescribed and partisan "fairness, balance and objectivity" have managed to render themselves irrelevant and obsolete for the majority of the population. Mr. Journalist can take that to the bank!

I so appreciated the interview of the senior figure of the Hezbollah. It was so informative. Giving a voice to these people can only help. Months ago I had seen an interview of the political figure of the Houtis and I had been amazed by what I heard, certainly not what we are told in the mainstream media.
@sorcesscores53662 ай бұрын
Absolutely. I saw that interview with the Houthi leader too. So much more well spoken (without cue cards and teleprompters) than what I see in the states, from media to politicians. Everyone here just reads PR scripts.

It's the gatekeeper mentality. Journalism is only of quality when it informs with propor context, thats it. Just like you pointed out, most of the journalists we're seeing today are not doing that at all.
@Bcrawlspace2 ай бұрын
I went to college for journalism but you don't need to get any formal training to be a journalist. Can a person be a writer without going to writing school?
@LuciThomasHardylover-qx6ts2 ай бұрын
That's what I was thinking. I know people who started their careers by getting a job on a local newspaper or just submitting their writing to a national paper. With absolutely no qualifications whatsoever. It's total rubbish to pretend that being a journalist means anything different than just someone who is doing the job. FFS, it's not like being a doctor or a gas engineer. If people want to read or hear what you are reporting,then you can call yourself a journalist. Getting a press pass is just up to the discretion of the issuing authority and whatever criteria they use to judge the credibility of your application. Sometimes just asking is enough! I absolutely agree with what Dimitri says about having the legal training being a good and relevant training, absolutely! But ultimately what makes a good journalist is being a decent human being. Someone who is paying attention to what is going on,who can think for themselves and give a voice to the people the rest of us want to hear from. And being a person of good heart and integrity so that people trust you and are prepared to open up. And that is a reputation that can be built on, rather than the tabloid journalists who schmooze people into telling their stories and then turning on them in the next breath. These are the people who have given journalism such a bad name,who have caused people to turn away from the mainstream media with no trust in what they're saying. And you, Dimitri, are filling the gap very nicely. So keep on keeping on! You're a much bigger man than your critics, and the world is a big place. ❤️
@saadishsnake2 ай бұрын
I understand what you're getting at, but aren't there journalistic standards that need to be followed to produce accurate journalism? Now you don't necessarily need to go to school to learn this, but you still have to learn it. In regards to writing, you still need to learn writing rules such as grammar, building a structure, etc to be a reliable writer.

As for Mr. Journalist, as far as I recall, there is no licensing requirement for reporting news,, conducting investigations, interviews or express opinions. Mr. Journalist here...since you called. I actually agree with a great deal of what you say. The mainstream media has indeed lost its way but only partially for the reasons you stated. It started to go down hill when its constituent members in both management and reporting staff abandoned the basic tenets of journalism and allowed their political and personal biases to infest their work. While you could, and have, argued that being upfront about bias and objectivity solves this, it does not and that applies to advancing corporate interests or any other interest that is not subject to context. What we end up with is a rag tag collection of activists pushing narratives and THAT is what has eroded public trust. If you look more closely at what the news consumer wants, they want to be presented with a set of facts and be granted the opportunity to form their own opinions rather than have someone else's opinions pushed on them. Citizen journalists do have an increasing role however most have zero interest in providing a range of opinions in their work and, if this proliferates, we end up with a literal Tower of Babel which, combined with social media incoherence pollutes public discourse to the point of oblivion. I watched your interview with the Hezbollah official and I will provide you with one observation about how different that might have turned out if conducted by a seasoned journalist. You asked a very astute question about if Hezbollah is committed to the destruction of Israel. He answered by saying Israel will self destruct. That immediately called for a follow up question such as "what if it doesn't...what will you do then?" Considering Hezbollah has repeatedly publicly stated that is its goal, you allowed him to get off that hook with only a nod and a wink. Given the current state of affairs, isn't THAT the most critical and I would certainly have attempted to present an opposing opinion. Your dedication to doing this is admirable but, at some point, you are going to find you are preaching to the choir and no one else and it's very difficult to affect change if you are only leading a parade with one legged band members.

Slightly off topic but still relevant: The ones willing to see merking of people (and animals for that matter) will always squeal in your face when you stand up and push back. I got abused by a supervisor at work for wearing a keffiyah and when asked about it I said "I don't like what's going on in Palestine." The vicious reply was "I don't either. K(i)ll 'em all." IT took me a couple of days to get this to stop bothering me. I thought about all the trapped people who face this and the ultimate abuse (death) and cannot escape it. And did more research as to who supports and who doesn't support peace and justice.

The so-called 'objectivity' in journalism has become quite boring lately considering the scale of things going on. I used to be understanding of that state of affairs (objectivity) but I despise it now and prefer to hear different viewpoints that give me some meat to chew on instead of the bland and false objectivity. I used to listen to Radio Tirana in the 70s or any other shortwave radios operated mainly by States. Boy! Those were propaganda machines which messages criss-crossed the airwaves 24/7. It was fun though to try to decipher what everyone was saying about everyone.

I would argue that "a journalist is what a journalist does". Which makes you much more of a journalist than all those wimps regurgitating only the prompts handed to them by large news corporations (such as AP or AFP), without even checking their accuracy, or caring about the implications of their diffusion. The only two things that journalism school teaches people that have any relevance for the job are: spelling and grammar. And if I may add, many people come out not even being capable of doing those two right.
